I think the whole Amiibo thing is gross, and I've always thought so. I've also grown out of figures and stuff, so eventhough they're nice collectibles they don't appeal to me anyway.
I don't have an issue with people making a stink about something like this. Sure this is exactly what Amiibo are, but people have every right to have a renewed hatred of it, no matter the perk attached.
Looks nice, but I'm curious how they approach a "narrative adventure" without any traditional characters. I loved Golf Story, I basically bought a Switch to play it, so I'm down for non-traditional golf games. I'm interested, especially since it's radio silence on the Sports Story front.
@carlos82 Absolutely, I agree we still have crap games. There will always be bad games! My point was mostly that there are great games being made now that would never have been possible previously. And that for every dope 90s game there's like 5 to 6 mediocre to awful rip-offs of it!
I actually agree, and I'd say we've been in a Golden Age for a while now. Yes there are a lot of business practices in play now that are gross and shady, but at no other time in history has their been the breadth of experiences and at different price points than we have now.
And the thing is, shady business practices aren't new to gaming in this gen or the last. They've just evolved along with technology.
And lastly, to say the 90s was the pinnacle of gaming is to willfully forgot the legion of terrible, derivative games that make up 60-75% of every console library. Do I dare bring up the "licensed" game?
I'd like them to make another 3D action game in the vein of Lords of Shadow 1. That game had some pacing issues and some jank, but it succeeded at delivering a game that really felt like a sweeping epic. It's definitely one of my favorite games of the PS3 generation.
LoS2 was trash, and MoF was mediocre at best. I also didn't like Samus Returns, I found it exceedingly boring.
I'm mostly interested in this due to the portability. I've mucked around with Game Maker Studio, but it's a bit of a hurdle to sit down at my PC. Being able to drop in on my Switch Lite in bed for 15 minutes seems like a more realistic path toward programming.
@Homerman76 I'll agree on the ego problem, but disagree on the pricing one. Quick example: Mario Odyssey still has an MSRP of $60 and was a launch game. God of War on PS4, which came out a year later and sold pretty well too, has an MSRP of $20. I think admittedly it's difficult to compare one company to another, but Nintendo is stingy as hell because Mario Kart 8 sold another 10 million copies last year.
@Zebetite I mean I stated that Epic is not being altruistic in their actions, they obviously have very clear financial motivations, but that doesn't mean what they're doing isn't potentially beneficial to players and devs.
I'm not sure how Nintendo is slightly less greedy? This is a company that refuses to drop prices on their own products and routinely crushes fan projects to protect their IP - both make perfect business sense. I'd also assume Nintendo takes the customary 30% off of all eShop sales as well, which has quietly not come up among all this.
I think Nintendo often has superior PR and fans will follow them off the cliff, but they aren't particularly different or generous either.
I'm sorry, why is Epic crazy? They are courting anyone who will listen to get their games on Epic Game Store and willing to pay to do it. This is a good thing for gamers and developers!! I'm not naive, it's not totally altruistic, obviously more games means more EGS patrons and more $$$, but it also is forcing other companies like Valve and Microsoft to potentially rethink their revenue splits - Microsoft recently agreed to take 12% instead of 30% cuts on their PC game store.
And with Sony there is now precedent, since they've softened a lot on PC. Horizon is on PC, Days Gone is either out or coming, Death Stranding, though not first party, got ported. Epic has money to burn and wants to stick it to Valve wherever they can. I'm all for it.
Lastly, sure, I would love official Nintendo ports on PC!!!!! It will never happen, as long as Nintendo makes successful hardware, but I would love to have access to ALL THE GAMES on one piece of hardware. That is the dream, isn't it!?
I've never bought MK8 because I have a Switch Lite and MK on the go just isn't that appealing. With that said, I just don't see myself shelling out $60 for an upgraded WiiU game that is what, 6 or 7 years old now? Maybe if they put out a new game I would feel a little differently, but probably not. Having a Switch Lite is kind of weird because you have a handheld but are buying games largely designed to be played on a TV.
I was bummed that Red Box dropped game rentals last year. I rarely used it but it was nice to try a few games out. They also had decent sales once in a while.
Agree with Shiva guesses. The hair in the silhouette is luscious, like his. A little bummed all the characters are reappropriated bosses. I'm still excited overall, love SoR4, but a bit underwhelmed with what we know about the DLC.
@jcboyer515 I don't recall the boob softened fall specifically, but that is definitely the kind of stuff that drives me away from anime games.
In general I've kind of been turned off most anime-inspired RPGs since Valkyria Chronicles. I loved the gameplay in that game but the writing and characters are so saccharine and trite. Those characters worked for me when I was 20 years younger.
Only ones I have enjoyed in that time are Ni no Kuni (all hail Mr. Drippy) and Persona, which does subvert tropes and has excellent writing, while keeping fan service to a minimum.
I played maybe 15 hours of Cold Steel 1 on PS3 and found the game a bit generic. I didn't thibk it was bad but I wasn't hooked and the game has a pretty plodding pace. It didn't help that it has the pseudo-Persona vibes with the school setting, which it does not compare with favorably.
I wish Trails in the Sky would get ported to Switch. The little bit I played of those were simple old school JRPG fun that I could see myself getting into. Seems like a better Switch fit than Cold Steel.
I watched this on HBO Max and I dug it. It's not great, but it hits a lot of the notes that I think it needed to. It had some cool fights and fatalities, some funny one liners. On the flip side, there is some lazy dialogue and limp acting, and it must be insanely difficult to sell MK as a believable fiction with live actors. There are some real issues with plot holes and logic, but what are you going to do?
I'm not a huge MK fan by any stretch. So depending on your familiarity and fervor for the brand you may find the movie wanting.
@popey1980 SNK can't afford to do that. Smash has sold 22m copies, nearly all at full MSRP. I'd be surprised if Sam Sho has sold 500k, many deeply discounted - I got mine for $10 new.
Keep in mind people, Capcom vs SNK 1 and 2 are both Capcom productions, so the ball is mostly in Capcom's court on those. Capcom hasn't shown a whole lot of love to their non-Street Fighter catalogue titles over the past generation - we got SF30th Anniversary and that's it. In contrast, during the previous gen there was SF3 Online Edition, the MvC2 port, Darkstalkers Resurrection.
Capcom has a plethora of great titles I'd love to see on modern hardware with good net code, CvS2 chief among them. As far as SNK, I would assume we'll get Cardfighters Clash. I wouldn't count on SvC Chaos, as that game was widely ignored.
I'm a PS4 and Switch owner. Game Pass is becoming increasingly tempting, as Microsoft bought a large number of studios I like: Bethesda, Obsidian, inXile, Ninja Theory, and Double Fine, if I remember correctly. However, with a bunch of physical PS4 games and the fact I still enjoy several Sony series, I can't imagine getting an Xbox over a PS5. I may seriously consider Game Pass for PC, but the real question will be whether I have the time to make it worthwhile. Maybe I will just end up buying PC games again, assuming my machine can run 'em.
@Cheez Fair. I will probably give it another shot at some point. I guess with the art it's not that I didn't like it, I actually love claymation. I guess I just I had certain expectations from the original and the sequel's graphics didn't hit the right note for me.
I love Q but I haven't been attracted to much of their output this entire generation. I skipped Nom Nom Galaxy, Tomorrow Children, don't have Stadia for PJ Raiders and PJ Monsters 2 was a huge disappointment IMO. I haven't tried Eden 2. I liked the first one a lot, but I bever finished it and didn't really need a second one.
On PS3 though, PJ was my go to. Monsters, Shooter 1, 2, Sidescroller, I ate them all up. I miss their simpler games frankly. Perhaps none of them were the commercial hits tgey were hoping for, but I feel like with Switch those games might have a much larger player base now.
@russell-marlow I'm not a SoR2 purist, but giving every character a dash or a run would fundamentally change the game. They'd have to rebalance every stage, otherwise it'd trivialize the score and ranking system they have in place. Enemy placement would need to be tweaked. Besides, Cherry has a run and Adam has a dash, so there are options for players who prefer a faster pace, plus all of the SoR3 retro characters.
I don't necessarily have an issue with the dash, it's just totally not an easy add. Jumping from SoR2 to SoR3 recently is like night and day. They play wildly differently.
I recognize they've improved this game a lot since initial reveal but it still looks pretty ugly compared to either the Dragon's Trap remake or Cursed Kingdom.
I have a physical copy of this too, in addition to a digital PS4 one, but it seems kind of silly to be upset about not having a complete copy on physical. Nobody involved in the production of this game expected it to be quite the success it was, and thus they weren't planning on DLC. Should they have waited a year and a half after the game's release to go physical?
With the Limited Run release it's also kind of a different beast. They release a lot of indie games that have already been out a while, but they also do these open pre-orders for unreleased games, like Streets of Rage. It's no different than buying any other physical game by any other publisher at release - there's a chance they will add more stuff after the fact.
I hope there are some new stages, but I'm happy they listened to fans and made Estel the star of the announcement. The second portrait silhouette at the end definitely looks like Max. He's a logical addition since his sprite already exists too. I would guess character 3 might be an all new character.
This is kind of a perfect storm: Bad game, terrible reviews, meager marketing, full MSRP. I think the character designs hurt too. Balan isn't immediately iconic like Sonic or Mario. What is Balan!? The average person won't know. The name too isn't catchy. Is Balan a character, a place?
I never finished this game and because of that I skipped Spirit Tracks entirely. I remember I got tired of the stylus antics and just stopped playing. I would be curious to give it another shot as an adult but there's no way I'm tracking down a used copy of it for whatever it goes for these days. I'm not even 100% sure I have a DS anymore....
I will say I'm not entirely against stylus controls. One of my favorite DS games was Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword, and Severed on 3DS was likely my favorite game on the console, period. Nintendo put a lot of thought into their stylus controls, I think it was just difficult to separate my expectations for Zelda from the game I was playing.
There are some ideas and there are some bad ideas. I always think having different sized (or shape!) face buttons is the worst - also looking at you GameCube.
Even Nintendo seems to have realized that some features should be standardized at this point. Both the WiiU and Switch have had very conventional control layouts.
With that said the Z-trigger was a great feature, but something that only works due to the unique grip.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi This is a Team Ninja and Tecmo issue, not Microsoft.
There isn't really a comparison here, Microsoft is doing a significantly better job retaining a connection with their legacy titles currently. Of course they are just taking this opportunity to dunk on Nintendo and Sony, as they have been dunked on in the past.
I really do wish there was a virtual console on Switch. I don't have Switch Online. I know it's cheap bit I don't play online. But I would buy a few old games here and there if offered. I'm still peeved I didn't get SNES games on vanilla 3DS.
I didn't bother with the demo and the trailers made this game look pretty poor and inexplicable. All of the comments about delays seem to ignore that the issues with the game largely aren't technical shortcomings that can be addressed in a timely manner, but more mechanical and design wise. The issues that need to be resolved would likely result in a completely different game.
I'm a longtime Sega fan, but if I am being totally honest, it has been a loooooooooong time since Yuji Naka's name being associated with a game gave me any sort of confidence.

This is really hard because I have a fluid top 5, top 10. Only thing that is definite is my top 2: Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike and Deus Ex.
Hyper Light Drifter is the game that comes to mind for a recent game that might crack my all timers. Cosmic Star Heroine is up there too.
