@mousieone Apologies, but let's agree to disagree. You wouldn't say a Brazilian Wax can only be done in Brazil, by a Brazilian person, would you? The same happens with JRPGs. It's a genre and educated people will understand what kind of game it refers to (and what kind of game it doesn't). I'm sure some people think a Brazilian Wax or a Thai Massage have to be done by native people, but sometimes those people just need to be better educated.
@mousieone I personally call every RPG an RPG, but if someone tells me a certain game is a JRPG, I fully understand what they mean.
Genres are "rabbit holes" anyway. You look at "The Flying Deuces" and "The Hangover" and you know both films belong to the Comedy genre, but what similarities do they have, actually?
EDIT: Btw, you forgot this bit that I said: "...and that share common tropes, clearly influenced by the genre defining games of Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy".
@mousieone "western" is an outdated concept and is based on the Euro-centric World map, where everything left of Asia is the West. Australia is, for some non-geographical reason, included as Western, lol. I suppose because the British colonized it.
It's just a silly and outdated term, overall.
I normally take JRPG to take RPGs that are turn-based and that share common tropes, clearly influenced by the genre defining games of Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. CrisTales is one of those games.
Anything that deviates from that, like Zelda, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy XII, etc, I just call an RPG (or Action RPG). It wouldn't be a lie to call them all RPGs though, and I understand and accept both options.
@mousieone I understand JRPG was used as an origin term, but then again you've also got to ask yourself why there aren't other origin terms like A(merican)RPG or UKRPG. It was a bit silly in the first place, because when you want to know the genre of a game, rather than knowing where it was made, you want to know what its gameplay is like. For example, Shadowrun for the SNES was made in Australia, but no one calls it an Australian-RPG. Because that would be silly.
@Abeedo I've only played Chain of Memories on the GBA, so I can't really tell what the gameplay system of the main series is like.
One thing to notice is that J-RPG isn't really a thing in Japan. It's a genre/label that is only used outside of Japan, and is used mostly to distinguish it from western RPG games like Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Diablo, etc, whose gameplay differs from the typical Japanese RPG.
In Japan, they don't really use the "J", there's just RPG, no matter if the gameplay system is more western or native. They do, however, have the Action-RPG genre, which Kingdom Hearts falls to, according to most sources I checked.
@Krull JRPG comes to identify a style of gameplay, rather than the origin of the game. It's a Japanese-style Role-Playing Game, rather than a Role-Playing Game from Japan.
@bluesun that's awesome! It's great to be able to play the Japanese versions without having to buy the Japanese copy (and not receive Gold Points on my EU eShop account). Thank you for the info.
This menu is clearly rushed, awfully so, but I don't care so much as long as the ports play flawlessly. Super Mario All-Stars had a pretty mediocre menu too if you think about it, apart from the gorgeous "splash screen".
The trailer got me hyped, love the music and the editing. Beautiful stuff.
But then you see the gameplay videos on YouTube and it looks like a BotW clone, much more than Genshin Impact. I'll probably skip or buy it off the bargain bin.
I will buy it but don't think it's fair for late time buyers. Not everyone can buy a game at launch, but that doesn't mean they won't want to buy it in the future.
@mateq except that actually there isn't yet any (updated) trailer or promotional material that show us what the game looks like and there's less than 4 months to go for the holiday season. Games tend to release late November early December, to be available for gift buyers. Normally. So that's less than 4 months. Not sure any games are released between Christmas and New Year, but who knows.
@Donutman the Nintendo Switch was first announced in March 17, 2015 and officially unveiled in October 20, 2016 and released in March 3, 2017. That's 4 months and a few weeks between the first trailer came out and the console was released.
@mateq Origami King was announced on May 14 and released July 17. That's 2 months. Sure, it was unexpected, not sure why Nintendo kept quiet about it for so long.
But we're talking about an old IP, not a new one like Gods and Monsters. We really know nothing about the game, even tho it has been hyped as hell by the internet just because of really small fragments of (what could be called) concept art. A new entry on a Mario spin-off doesn't really need a ton of marketing, because people sort of already know what to expect.
I suppose Ubisoft wants to ride on that self-generated hype, but that's not normally how things are done. Let's remember how long we've had to wait for recent releases like Last of Us 2, FF7 Remake, Death Stranding or Cyberpunk 2077 (this one not even released yet) and we definitely had a ton of game play released quite a long time prior.
@sanderev the "trailer" was a actually a teaser and didn't show any gameplay. And Nintendo isn't releasing any new games within 4 months. Pikmin 3 Deluxe is releasing soon, but that's a port. Not sure what you're talking about.
So there's 4 months until the end of the year and you expect me to believe that in 4 months they'll go from no promotional material (trailer, gameplay footage, screenshots, etc) to a full functioning release. Yeah ok.

@mousieone It is indeed a thing! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thai_massage
I've never tried it myself though (or the Brazilian wax xD) lol

@mousieone What's Western RPG? Anything not developed in Japan? Is Australia Western? lol
Re: Where To Pre-Order Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity On Nintendo Switch
@chardir that's not necessarily true, some other online shops provide referral links. But I do understand your point.

@Rambler then why do we not see articles about retro Sony or Microsoft games?
Re: Sega Surprises Everyone By Releasing A Canned Golden Axe Sequel, Including The Original Devs
Wait what does this have to do with Nintendo?
Re: Where To Pre-Order Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity On Nintendo Switch
Why, rather than just linking to the Nintendo UK shop and Amazon UK, don't you link for online shops where the game is cheaper?

IIRC it's not the first delay either. I've had it pre-ordered for ages now.
