Headup has announced that the "comically creepy" 3D platformer Pumpkin Jack will be getting spooky on a Switch near you from 23rd October.
The game, developed by Nicolas Meyssonnier, has you jumping, dodging and carving your way through enemies and puzzles in a battle of evil against good. You'll come up against a variety of dangerous situations, rollercoaster-like minecarts, and more, and you can even use your trusty owl companion to unleash long-distance attacks. Here's an official description:
Pumpkin Jack is a spooky scary 3D platformer in which you embody Jack, the Mythical Pumpkin Lord. Dive into an epic adventure through otherworldly landscapes and help the Evil annihilate the Good!
Follow the will of the Devil himself and slay your nemesis in an epic quest that will take you on a journey in the Boredom Kingdom, a mythical realm shattered by the curse. You will meet friends along the way, from a haughty owl to a snarky crow!
Discover stunning atmospheres in a colorful yet spooky scary Kingdom. Travel through epic and dramatic settings, with each level having its own eerie atmosphere. Using a vibrant palette and high-quality lighting effects, Pumpkin Jack invents its own unique cartoon universe inspired by the classic PS2 graphic style, made with Unreal Engine 4.
The game is said to offer tight platforming sections, riddles to solve, and "a hair-raising array of gameplay mechanics" that total a playtime of 5-8 hours for one run. If you're keen on giving it a go, make sure to keep an eye on the eShop later this month.

I'm amazed they can use that name and likeness without copyright infringement!
In any case, this looks promising.
Aw man I forgot about this game! I might check it out as long as it isn't a Pumpkin Jack Zip Lash!
I'm interested
Cool being waiting for this all year
Looks great 😊
That looks pretty good. Might get this one.
It does seem like a fun game! Will wait for some reviews after its release
@sketchturner likely because it's not copyrighted. And likely it won't be for its too close to the origins of Jack I laterns
Looks like Jack pumpkin head from the movie Return to OZ.
I like the look of it.
@sketchturner Pretty sure the Oz stories are in the public domain at this point.
What other games has the dev done?
When you said inspired by ps2 graphics I thought it was going to look cheap, but it honestly looks and sound awesome. I’ll check it out.
Reminds me a little bit of MediEvil, which is a good thing.
PS2 era!?
Er excuse me, I think you mean gamecube era
I'm just joking by the way
It looks like a lot of fun! let's see how it turns out
This game is like Maximo with a mix of MedEvil into it.
Shades of Medieval and the Jak series. I’m hopeful here.
@LaytonPuzzle27 I’d completely forgotten Maximo!
We still haven't seen any footage from the Switch version... so maybe I'll get PS4 instead...
MediEvil rip off works for me. Loved that game and this looks very fun. A good review and a decent price and I’m there.
That subheading reads like such shade.
This looks really promising, hope it reviews well.
Looks like it could be a fun little release for the month Halloween. I’ll give this a go if priced right.
Hope this one turns out good! Looks interesting.
Looks appropriately atmospheric as heck. Will consider getting it for sure.
This looks great, super curious about it!
I'd say more of a PS2 era game then PS2 graphics, but it looks amazing. I will definitely keep an eye on this.
Almost forgot about this.
MORE PLATFORMS FOR THE PLATFORMER GOD!
I like the style.
@sketchturner Yeah I also think this is public domain, and can't be copyrighted by anyone.
But anyway, it seems enjoyable. The obvious inspirations aside, it also reminds me of Overlord in a way.
@MEGAMAN_D I’m not joking that is the phrase that should have been used.
@MEGAMAN_D I mean it's kind of true that it looks more like GameCube, Xbox or maybe Dreamcast... PS2 games had more jaggies! The Jaggies are what come to mind when I think of PS2 graphics.
I do have to wonder how many of these developers "inspired by" different generations don't just have a low budget, but are passing it off as an artistic choice.
It looks very colorful and fun! I am VERY interested in this one!
I always look for a game to play around Halloween. That looks like decent art direction/style. So, I'm interested.
Now to go look at what other stuff the developer has made. edit: looks like a first entry for developer "Nicolas Meyssonnier".
@Shambo @BionicDodo @Jeremazing
Isn't Jack the Pumpkin King from Nightmare Before Christmas? Or did that movie copy something else I'm not aware of?
I'm interested. Lots of heads on fire in games recently. If the main guys head is on fire, I'm in.
Looks fun! I’ll probably not be able to play it around Halloween but once I get the money I’ll consider buying it
@sketchturner Jack from Nightmare Before Christmas doesn't really look that much like this Jack. Google Jack Pumpkinhead and you will see that the character from the Wizard of Oz series is a much closer resemblance. The Oz books are in the public domain now. The name Jack obviously comes from Jack O Lantern which is an extremely old expression.
Yay - another good looking 3D Platformer. I guess this is a modernised Medievil?
Looks cool. Since its Unreal Engine, I'll be avoiding the Switch version if it reviews well.
@MEGAMAN_D There were barely any platformers on the GC.
Looks great but what does the price tag say?
Looks like my kind of game.
Honestly thought "PS2 era" was gonna mean "it'll look like garbage"
but then again, some PS2 games aged well due to good art direction and this looks similarly great.
@99x Does the Unreal engine not work well on the Switch or is it better suited for other platforms?
@technotreegrass Its okay if the Switch is the main platform (see Yoshi), but all the ports have been pretty disappointing, IMO.
@99x True. I own a PS4 and I play all my third party AAA games on it since my Switch rarely leaves my house. Samurai Jack Battle Through Time is a "PS2 era" game and that looks and plays okay on the Switch so hopefully I won't lose out on too much if I can't wait for Pumpkin Jack to be released on the PS4.
@technotreegrass If it reviews well and the price isn't crazy, I'm gonna grab it on GOG. Hopefully the Switch port is optimized as well as it can be for people wanting to play ot there.
Whoa!! Why is nobody talking about the 5 - 8 hour in one run part of the article? Is it a short game or one with replay value? I can always get ghostbusters on Switch for under 7 bucks right now.
