Modus Games has today announced that upcoming JRPG Cris Tales will no longer be launching next month as planned.
Originally destined for Switch and other consoles on 17th November, the title will now arrive on all platforms – both current and next gen – in 2021. Christina Seelye, the company's CEO, says that the decision wasn't an easy one to make.
"The decision to delay was a tough one, but was made to ensure that the developers at Dreams Uncorporated and SYCK have a chance to bring the best version of Cris Tales to fans anxiously awaiting its release."
There is some good news, though, as those who choose to pre-order a copy of the retail version of the game will now receive a bonus poster.
Carlos Rocha Silva, CEO of Dreams Uncorporated and SYCK, the developers of Cris Tales, has shared the following message with fans:
"To every Cris Tales fan, thank you for the interest in our game. We began development in 2014 and we hope it’s more than clear to all of you that this is a labor of love for us. Much of the team here became friends by believing in what we thought might be an impossible dream – the dream to create a video game that is both an homage to the golden age of JRPGs and also a completely innovative experience within the genre. We never believed that Cris Tales would reach an audience so big and diverse, and that people were going to love the dream and game as much as we do.
That is why we want to tell everyone who is eager for the release of Cris Tales that along with Modus Games we have made the difficult decision of postponing the release date of Cris Tales from November 17, 2020 to sometime in early 2021.
We are a very small video game development studio located in the city of Bucaramanga, Colombia. Cris Tales is the biggest project we have ever worked on, and we want to get it right. As you probably know, most areas and people in the game must be created at least three times, if not more to show the different past, present and futures. So, in a way, it’s like developing three different video games at the same time. Three video games that must be impeccable so that we can deliver all the magic we have in our soul to all of you. We want to make sure to earn all the love you’ve all shown in our events, demos, previews and so much more."

Finally, an RPG following the tales of Christopher Biggins.
@nessisonett An obscure reference but one that is greatly appreciated. :L
IIRC it's not the first delay either. I've had it pre-ordered for ages now.
I wish you good luck because 2021 no will have time to play all the games that got pushed back to 2021. Unless you are a little kid.
Pop question: can a game created by a Colombian studio be called a JRPG? Why can’t it just be an RPG? Or ... a CRPG?
I’m quite excited about Cris Tales, but I’d also rather wait for them to get it right. Good luck to them.
I'd rather have them postpone it then have them rush out a version that's barely playable.
I hope it turns out to be good.
I don't usually play RPGs, but I'm looking forward to this one
I heard the previews were slightly negative on this one, maybe whatever the issues were will be ironed out before release.
Pity, but not really surprising.
[Insert Miyamoto quote here]
I'm still looking forward to this, although 2021 is going to be a pretty busy year games-wise, so I'm not sure how long it'll take me to get to it.
@Krull JRPG comes to identify a style of gameplay, rather than the origin of the game. It's a Japanese-style Role-Playing Game, rather than a Role-Playing Game from Japan.
Loved the Demo.
But this was going to get lost in November. Better to move it out of there anyway.
I enjoyed the demo so I was really looking forward to it. But if they need more time, they need more time.
I tried out demo and very much dug it's style and gameplay. I can't wait to check it out when it does eventually release next year
At least that is good for Gamers as another said backlogs is good.
@RazumikhinPG But Kingdom Hearts is identified as a jrpg despite the fact that it's more similar to hack and slash action games.
Wait this games was being released. The switch page made me think it was just a concept
@Abeedo I've only played Chain of Memories on the GBA, so I can't really tell what the gameplay system of the main series is like.
One thing to notice is that J-RPG isn't really a thing in Japan.
It's a genre/label that is only used outside of Japan, and is used mostly to distinguish it from western RPG games like Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Diablo, etc, whose gameplay differs from the typical Japanese RPG.
In Japan, they don't really use the "J", there's just RPG, no matter if the gameplay system is more western or native. They do, however, have the Action-RPG genre, which Kingdom Hearts falls to, according to most sources I checked.
@Krull it's a genre, based on where that style of game originated. It's not the location of the developer.
...In case you were really asking.
@smashandbash there's a demo in the eshop.
@Abeedo JRPGs used to be turn based (in some form or another), but if "Tales of" games are considered JRPG's, i guess Kingdom Hearts can be, too. I Think they are both Action-RPGs personally.
@twztid13 @RazumikhinPG JRPG is a term than somehow, as as late, has changed how it as defined, and confuses those that use it’s historical definition.
Historically it was “origin”’ term and thus to a good chunk of people any Japanese RPG is a JRPG. However, as of late it’s defined by “genre” but yet games like FF XV and “Tales” are still considered JRPGs by most.
I personally think people should stop using it as a “genre” term because it creates confusion with those who have historically used it as an “origin” term.
But it is what it is.
The demo really made me fall in love with this game. While the delay is unfortunate I'd prefer to play the full game at its best.
I can wait for that.
@twztid13 I think it's only labelled an RPG though. RPG is a term for a game that let's you roleplay any way you like. Meanwhile kingdom hearts only has one way to play. So is it really an RPG, or just a game with a lot of numbers?
@mousieone I understand JRPG was used as an origin term, but then again you've also got to ask yourself why there aren't other origin terms like A(merican)RPG or UKRPG. It was a bit silly in the first place, because when you want to know the genre of a game, rather than knowing where it was made, you want to know what its gameplay is like.
For example, Shadowrun for the SNES was made in Australia, but no one calls it an Australian-RPG. Because that would be silly.
@RazumikhinPG We do actually use the term Western RPG as a location term, so that argument is null.
The problem with saying JRPG as a genre is defining that actual gameplay. Is it “Turn-base”? Because there are a ton of games like Xenoblade, Tales, etc that don’t have that characteristic that most people consider JRPGS. If you say it’s “menu heavy“, well the Witcher 3 is menu heavy and FF XV isn’t. If you say it’s anime based; The Last Remanent and Lost Odyssey are not.
To go another route, if one considers Disgaea and Fire Emblem JRPGs based on “genre” characteristics than how does one differentia a game like Gears Tactics? Quite literally a turn based tactical game with character classes and a heavy story.
The term JRPG as genre has no defining characteristic to define that genre. And trying to fit it into a “genre” term is like trying to fit a round peg into a square hole. It temporarily works true but when you actually examine it; the argument fall apart.
However it will always be able to identify with being “Japanese” it’s in the name.
Edit: I had to go back and get my glasses.
@mousieone What's Western RPG? Anything not developed in Japan? Is Australia Western? lol
@RazumikhinPG considering the US is actually more East and than west of Japan. yes it would be a “western” rpg.
BTW I’m not saying this is how Japan sees things; I can’t speak to that.
@mousieone "western" is an outdated concept and is based on the Euro-centric World map, where everything left of Asia is the West. Australia is, for some non-geographical reason, included as Western, lol. I suppose because the British colonized it.
It's just a silly and outdated term, overall.
I normally take JRPG to take RPGs that are turn-based and that share common tropes, clearly influenced by the genre defining games of Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. CrisTales is one of those games.
Anything that deviates from that, like Zelda, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy XII, etc, I just call an RPG (or Action RPG).
It wouldn't be a lie to call them all RPGs though, and I understand and accept both options.
@RazumikhinPG that’s a problem because it’s a personal choice meaning that you personally use but most still use a term you deem as “outdated”. And again, if “turn-base” is your only characteristic that seems a bit vague and also why not just say turned based rpg; why bother with JRPG.
Then you have people who say “old school” JRPG.
It’s a rabbit hole. That would be better if you just didn’t go down at all.
@mousieone I personally call every RPG an RPG, but if someone tells me a certain game is a JRPG, I fully understand what they mean.
Genres are "rabbit holes" anyway. You look at "The Flying Deuces" and "The Hangover" and you know both films belong to the Comedy genre, but what similarities do they have, actually?
EDIT: Btw, you forgot this bit that I said: "...and that share common tropes, clearly influenced by the genre defining games of Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy".
@RazumikhinPG no I asked you to “define” that. Define the commonality between FF and DQ with Tales or Xeno. Having a problem? Figured you might. A game like The Last Remnant isn’t actually close those at all. Or better yet how one of your “defining” doesn’t even qualify anymore.
Gameplay genres are not the “rabbit hole” you are claiming them to be. If I said something was turned based RPG; I’ve instantly given them idea of what the game is. Tactical rpg, platformer etc don’t confuse the gameplay genre, as most games are defined by first, for a category genre which games are generally only secondary defined by if at all.
I assure you if you said oh Cris Tales is JRPG most people would say it’s Japanese. In fact, at the start of this thread you had “explain” to someone oh it’s genre. That’s a Rabbit Hole that only exists because people think they can change terminology to fit their needs when the bulk of people are still going to default to the historically definition.
@mousieone Apologies, but let's agree to disagree. You wouldn't say a Brazilian Wax can only be done in Brazil, by a Brazilian person, would you? The same happens with JRPGs. It's a genre and educated people will understand what kind of game it refers to (and what kind of game it doesn't).
I'm sure some people think a Brazilian Wax or a Thai Massage have to be done by native people, but sometimes those people just need to be better educated.
@RazumikhinPG :/ Sure but just remember games like Gears tactics and Wasteland feature Turn Based Combat and games like KH and FF don’t. Maybe try and come up with some characteristics that actually define your new genre term that someone can’t counter.
And also a Brazilian was isn’t called that because it’s done by Brazilians it was called just because it was popularized by Brazil. Like French Toast was popularized in France.
I have never in my life heard the term “Thai massage” and I’m 41 and frequently go to spas. o.O
@mousieone It is indeed a thing! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thai_massage
I've never tried it myself though (or the Brazilian wax xD) lol
@RazumikhinPG hmm interesting... well apparently where I exist they are referred to as “Yoga Massages” not that I’ve ever tried one either though
