SNL is clever satire comedy. There's a lot of reading between the lines and keeping up with current events.
I mean the comments section here essentially illustrates what i mean, so many people have no idea who Elon Musk is, the fact that he's the richest person on the planet and the work he's done in the field of renewable energy has made him an important figure in the annuals of humanity.
But we have people like "i don't really know this guy"... - lol mother, why did you leave here? These people have mostly lost their minds.
Unfortunately i read the comments section here, my head hurts, i try to close my eyes and not think about it.
The problem with Apple and Epic is a simple case of jealousy.
Epic are jealous that Apple has what they dont.
Epic out here trying to grab a monopoly for themselves in the PC gaming sphere while moaning and complaining about a monopoly that Apple has for mobile gaming.
I doubt Nintendo could purchase Game Freak outright, i mean they have the money but it'll probably cost them a hell of a lot more than they would want to pay.
I mean a total buy out of Game Freak would likely cost in the region of 5b i mean sure Nintendo could do that but would they want too? I doubt it.
A good idea for Nintendo would be to buy out multiple indie developers and make a ton of exclusive Indie games.
And it's honestly amazing to me that people still don't understand the difference between a console with portable features (Wii U) and a Portable console with TV out features ( The Switch).
@Damo just because it displays better when used on TV doesn't mean that it isn't still primarily a portable.
And honestly, many games look better in portable so your point is a scaling factor, its easier to scale the resolution to look better on TV than it does on portable but that doesn't mean anything.
The SNES GB add on made the GB games look better when they were on TV too, are you going to tell me that was a hybrid too?
Think about it another way.
i can play the portable console just fine without the dock, but i can't play the dock without portable console.
Therefore the portable is the defining factor here.
@Damo because there is a subtle difference between a console that has the ability to be played portable and a portable with TV out capabilities.
The former requires much of the meat of the console to be attached to the console itself, but the console has the ability to be played portable - this is EXACTLY what the Wii U was, a console that had portable features.
The Switch is a portable first with the ability to be played on TV, but the main sticking point here is portability, the fact that you don't need a dock to play the console is further proof of this.
So yes it is a hybrid, but when making this thing, Nintendo's main focus was clearly it's ability to be played portable, the gimmick here is actually it's ability to connect to the TV.
@Mountain_Man not sure how you're doing your math but the 150m budget is everything.
It's the cost for production, distribution, wages and marketing. So when all is said and done, to bring the movie to theaters and pay everybody, 150m was the total budget.
All sources im reading all mention that Detective Pikachu made profit, more than double It's budget in fact, but for whatever ridiculous reason, that still doesn't warrant a sequel.
If you can show me sources that claim more than the 150m budget was spent, then I'll believe what you say.
But until then, it seems me like the studio and those involved with making this, would prefer to put effort into even more profitable ventures, which leaves ventures such as this one, which are perfectly fine, in the dust.
@GalacticBreakdown no it means that studios who spend a 100 million to create a movie, normally expect 1b back from the box office.
It's totally unreasonable and it takes creativity away from Hollywood but for whatever reason, that seems to be what the studios are aiming for before green lighting a sequel.
Now if a movie gets close, like 700 or 800m, thats still good enough but the line is 1b, if you look at the top 25 highest grossing movies of all time, all of them have grossed in over a bill and 90% of them have been made in the last 25 years.
Yeah im not surprised, it was a good enough movie and it even made some money but these days, if you spend 100m you expect back a bill in the box office.
Many movies have made bank but won't be getting more content because a bill seems to be the make or break.
Star Trek is a great example of this, all the movies made money, all over 350m on budgets less than half that, but even if they made profit, they didn't make a bill so no 4th instalment.
Unfortunately it seems to be the case with Hollywood these days, WB in particular are looking to emulate what Disney have done with Marvel but they haven't been able to do it.
This film made a respectable 450m on 150m budget but for a behemoth as hungry as WB right now, that isn't enough.
From a business perspective, it really makes sense for Microsoft & Nintendo to do something like Game Pass on the Switch, that would have to mean Xcloud will also have to be available on the Switch, under certain Nintendo authorised parameters.
Nintendo would benefit greatly from something like that, it would bring a huge amount of people to their NSO service.
Microsoft would get a huge presence in Japan and both parties would rake in cash.
But this is Nintendo we're talking about here, they don’t always make sound decisions.
I think what happened, and im only guessing. But i think Nintendo intended to put a lot of those games on the NSO, but then Nintendo saw how badly received NSO has been and has probably halted additional consoles until they figure something out.
I think Nintendo were hoping that if they throw enough free SNES games at it, people would start to see the benefit but that didn't happen.
So in short they abandoned the classic consoles to not take away anything from NSO but NSO turned out to be a bit unpopular so knowing Nintendo, they've probably gone back to the drawing board and gonna try something else.
Not realising that actually putting on the N64/GC games will actually make NSO a lot more popular, but Nintendo won't see it that way.
@BizarreJelly28980 at this stage I'm convinced that something happened between Rockstar and Nintendo that we haven't been made aware of that essentially played a huge role in stopping Rockstar from supporting the Switch.
I can't think what it is but I'm fairly convinced something has gone down behind the scenes that's caused this.
From a business perspective, there's no logic in Rockstar holding off support anymore.
Even more so when you look at how Sony are leaving Japan and the only way to effectively access that market now is through Nintendo.
Oh won't you look at that didn't expect to see GTA 5 here... 🙄
Shame Rise has fallen off the top 10 so quickly, i know it's sold well so far but I'd have like to see it reach 15+m lifetime on the Switch, it still can but that's probably a long shot if it's already fallen off the top 10.
@SalvorHardin Xbone might have been a joke but Microsoft was worth 500 billion in 2012 and in 2021 they are worth 1.3 trillion.
In 2012 Sony were worth 45 billion and and now in 2021 they are worth 78 billion.
Nintendo in 2012 were worth 30 billion, in 2021 they are sitting at around 55 billion.
Who do you think is really winning? Forget about games and consoles. Companies like Microsoft and Apple can outright buy the entire industry.
Microsoft could literally buy Nintendo and change ABSOLUTELY nothing, they could leave Nintendo exactly how it is and if Nintendo and Microsoft wanted, you will never know about it.
I don't really care, I'd like them to do it but i don't expect Nintendo to do clever things lol, I get enough gaming enjoyment outside of Nintendo too, so I'm really not bothered what Nintendo does. Or doesn't do.
Don't put GamePass/Xcloud on the Switch? No worries i have GamePass & Xcloud on other devices so its not my loss.
No VC? that's fine because roms and emulators still exist and Nintendo can never really do anything about it.
No voice chat? Discord exists.
Terrible multiplayer games? No worries because there's better options elsewhere.
Adding additional benefits to their hardware should be something they want to do, i have access to that stuff elsewhere so i honestly don't care either way.
@Dant3Sama Nintendo's OS has been cracked wide open by hackers.
Microsoft has a solid OS that they can implement hacking detection tools and ban accounts accordingly.
For whatever reason Nintendo doesn't have the ability to do that, i actually remember reading about it in 2018 when there were tons of articles about how easy it is to hack a Switch.
At the beginning Nintendo tried to ban the hackers but it kept spiralling out of control, they couldn't really detect them very well.
So eventually they took it one step further, went after the websites that promoted it and legally started attacking the hacking community.
Ultimately Nintendo made a weak operating system that they couldn't protect so instead of implementing security measures on their OS (Which they tried to do but kept failing), they legally attacked the hackers.
The lack of a market for pc gaming means there's never been a big market for huge multiplayer mmo games, games like WoW or League never picked up in Japan for a reason, its indicative of the fact that they prefer smaller either local multiplayer or couch co-op.
Why do you think Street Pass was popular over there? Look i don't care what you believe, i go by what i see.
I don't see a big online presence when it comes to Japanese gamers. It's just how it's always been.
@shazbot lol no their not, you can try and pretend they are all you want but it just doesn't amount to a real MMO experience like you get with many western games.
It's quite clear that Sony have ditched Japan, they've moved their head office to Cali, and if you actually bother to go online and do some research, you'll find that many Sony studios in Japan are closing and the developers are leaving.
Nintendo isn't exactly known for providing and online gaming experience and Japan has never been into PC gaming - there's tons of articles online exploring why PC gaming has never been popular in Japan but to cut a long story short, it's because PC's take up too much space.
Anyway that basically leaves Nintendo, Microsoft isn't successful over there.
So... with Sony out of the picture, Microsoft never in the picture and Nintendo's online service being a laughing stock. I don't see the situation changing.
Japan hasn't taken to any business that has a strong online presence, if you're going to sit there and try to tell me there is nothing wrong with Nintendo's online offering and it provides all the multiplayer gaming the Japanese could ever want.
@wanghosom i mean games like Fortnite, Pubg, CoD and other games of the sort. Those type of big multiplayer games don't do well in Japan outside of a few MMOs on mobile, they don’t like PC gaming either, its just not popular over there.
Monster hunter limits the amount of people who can play and has no pvp element, it can be played in a team but quite frankly its less of a multiplayer game than even Dauntless.
Honestly though you can't exactly point at games like Monster Hunter or even Splatoon and try to claim that Japan likes real online multiplayer gaming.
Big MMOs like League Of Legends and WoW are totally dead over there, further proving my point.
Sony moved their focus away from Japan because quite frankly, thats to be expected.
Japan's market seems to be more geared towards portability, especially since the rise of smartphones, they actually have companies that make good mobile games.
Also Japan isn't really a great market for multiplayer games, Sony wanted to focus more on the market that made them more money during the PS4's life.
PS4 sold over 100m units OUTSIDE of Japan, under 15% of their sales came from Japan and even the PS3 had a very lop sided sales figures in that regard.
When you see that Nintendo gets around 30-40% of their total sales from Japan, Sony have obviously decided to move away from that market.
And when you look at the way the market is moving, which isn't and never was in the same direction that Sony was and is moving, its not really a surprise.
@Kilamanjaro yeah Gamepass is where the future of gaming really is. The value for money, ability to stream games on any device and the ever growing library.
How much truth is in that, im not 100% certain but with Netflix seemingly willing to put their services on anything with a screen (including older Nintendo hardware). I'm guessing its true.
So it's actually Nintendo who are not allowing it.
@HeadPirate you need to realise that the service offers NOTHING that the majority of people have been ASKING FOR.
It gives great value for money for parents, it has the family plan, kids get like 80 games and they get to play online, parents get all that for less than a cost of a video game every year.
But it isn't parents and their kids who go online to give their opinion about these types of services.
It's gamers who do that, you want to know what gamers didn't get?
We got no dedicated servers
We got no newer games
We got no voice chat feature
We got no party lobbying feature
We got no multimedia features (Netflix, Prime ect)
I own a Switch, i pay for the online (or rather, i paid for it, once), i did NOT getting the service i wanted.
I would seriously need help if i didn't give my opinion about that and didn't dislike it based on what i want from the service, considered it has given me next to no value other than playing some games online.
@Burning_Spear you and many like you seem to be missing the point.
As a parent i can see what you mean, it gives great value for money, some 80 or so games for £18 a year is ridiculous value for money, the ability to play online should be free but the free games they have provided, one would need to be a fool to pass that up.
But you are totally missing the point because this service literally caters to parents so they buy the online for their kids, its why the family plan exists.
This service DOES NOT cater to the gaming community, it doesn't even come close, the gaming community isn't interested in how much rubbish software you throw into the library, old games are old games. Their not biting and they didn't bite when the service was announced, it literally gives NOTHING that gamers have been asking for.
No new games
No dedicated servers
No voice chat
No lobbying feature to play with friends
No direct messaging feature
Now guess who goes online to throw their opinions about whats good and what isn't when it comes to video games?
I'll give you a clue.
It's not the people who Nintendo are targeting with this service.
@Clyde_Radcliffe that's what i mean, they begrudgingly know they NEED the gaming community for their products to be successful.
Because if gamers say their hardware sucks then the magazines write about it and parents won't buy it for their kids.
Which is basically what happened with the Wii U, the casual market didn't come to it because the gaming market laughed at it.
Outside of that dynamic, they literally hate gamers with a passion because they actually send lawyers all over the world to go after any gamer that uses Nintendo's IPs in any way Nintendo doesn't like.
Not many companies go that far out of their way to do that, Nintendo, especially in the last 3 years, have shown a mind blowing level of contempt for hardcore gamers who purchase their products.
This situation will only further that contempt. Which i find hilarious personally, because soon Nintendo will be back on their knees again. I feel it coming.

@rjejr I've been saying the same thing, i mean it should be obvious to anyone.
The console works just fine without a dock but the dock doesn't work without the console.
This means Nintendo's main focus when making the Switch, was it's ability to be portable, because that part works alone.
The home console part doesn't work on its own.
This is the very definition of portability with TV out.

Japan has a strange taste in video games.
Re: Japanese Charts: Monster Hunter Rise Leads In Another Dominant Week For Nintendo

Re: Talking Point: Is The New Switch Lite Blue, Or Purple?
@Jslade well i mean, you already chose the most boring Switch Lite colour thats available. Even if you don't include this. 🤣
Re: Japanese Charts: Monster Hunter Rise Stays Top In A Nintendo-Dominated Top Ten
@Kilamanjaro yeah Gamepass is where the future of gaming really is. The value for money, ability to stream games on any device and the ever growing library.
Gamepass is becoming unavoidable for any gamer.
Re: Random: Nintendo Has Uploaded Its Switch Online Trailer (Again), And It's Still Getting Disliked
@Zacattack99 Netflix have stated numerous times that they would be happy to put their service on the Switch but Nintendo hasn't allowed it.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2017/09/rumour_netflix_app_ready_for_switch_all_it_needs_is_nintendos_go-ahead
How much truth is in that, im not 100% certain but with Netflix seemingly willing to put their services on anything with a screen (including older Nintendo hardware). I'm guessing its true.
So it's actually Nintendo who are not allowing it.
Re: Random: Nintendo Has Uploaded Its Switch Online Trailer (Again), And It's Still Getting Disliked
Re: Random: Nintendo Has Uploaded Its Switch Online Trailer (Again), And It's Still Getting Disliked
@Burning_Spear read EVERYTHING i wrote.
Re: Random: Nintendo Has Uploaded Its Switch Online Trailer (Again), And It's Still Getting Disliked
Re: Random: Nintendo Has Uploaded Its Switch Online Trailer (Again), And It's Still Getting Disliked
