You know Animal Crossing sold 25 million copies this year and most likely pulled in a good few billion in profit for Nintendo.
How exactly is that a waste of time or money?
Now personally i think the game is rubbish and i honestly cannot see how it sold 5 million, let alone 25 million. But i have to give credit where credit is due, they really hit that one out of the park.
I believe Nintendo made more profit from their video games this year than any developer in the history of video game development has ever made in a single year.
@MiyamotoHimself Yeah it's tough for companies, you have such a big market in China, nearly 1.4 billion people, that's a huge portion of the worlds population. So the potential is big, but you have the Chinese Communist Party, who are simply not to be trusted.
I wish politics would stay away from video games, it should be a place where people can, regardless of political points of view, get togethers and play togethers, without politics getting in the way.
But surely Miyamoto San, you can help influence Nintendo's decisions in this regard 😛.
@Dman10 the game looked good on the Switch 2 years ago. It doesn't matter how you dress it up and put a ribbon on it, it's still an old game.
It's been looking good on the Switch... for over two years...
It's over with now, time to drop it and move onto other games and other announcements.
Why do we need to make a big deal over a game that 21 million people already own and has been available for 2 years? The game did it's job.
I enjoyed it but it's done now, we've had bare bones for the whole of 2020 and the last chance of news we get is for a 2 year old game.
One new character out of 80+ that i already have isn't going to make me play this game over even a brand new mobile game, let alone other Switch games. I see no value.
If Smash deserves all this hype then why not dedicated servers? The online is a mess, you may get 1 or 2 decent games but you'll always find someone with a dodgy connection and it'll ruin the experience.
Local multiplayer hasn't really been a thing for most of 2020, not like you can get togethers with friends at a house and play Smash for a few hours anymore.
The game has about 60 hours of solo content available.
It came out 2 years ago, in terms of success through revenue and sales, Red Dead Redemption 2 has done better and came out around the same time.
I don’t hear Rockstar making a big hoohaa over a 2 year old game.
So no i have to disagree, i put 120 hours in Smash, I've had 2 years to do it, it hasn't been too difficult. But the game had it's time, it shouldn't be the showpiece of Nintendo's Game Awards.
I honestly don't see the value in this. The game has way passed its sell by date for treating it like news worthy stuff anymore, it doesn't need attention in the Game Awards, in my honest opinion.
It's online is a mess, some matches are fine and some are not, nothing is consistent. The Single player is fine for about 50-60 hours but it doesn't carry a game this far - it came out more than 2 years ago now.
Local multiplayer is really all that is left and right now, with Covid 19, that's not much of an option.
I personally don’t see the value in this, they don’t even need to make a big hoohaa about it.
It's one new character when the game has 80+ in it already. Why does it need to be announced at the game awards like it's some big deal?
I'll pass. It looks great, but while there isn't a physical, I'm not going to bother. Plenty of other games and with the size of my backlog, i can't justify it.
This is somewhat understandable, i don't agree with kowtowing to China but the size of the market makes it really quite a hard choice to make. Especially if you've made such a big project like this.
@StevenG also considering it was actually Bethesda themselves who made the statement that it would be digital only, it just makes tour entire argument all the more fantastical.
But again I've noticed, you seem dead set on pinning EVERYTHING on Nintendo, regardless of if it is their fault or not.
I don't think I'm following you anymore? What catastrophe?
Yeah I really find it very hard to believe that Nintendo, or any company would make it a requirement for a piece of media entertainment published by ANOTHER PUBLISHER, be distributed digital or in physical.
Until you show me actual, factual proof of this nonsense, I'll take it as such.
@StevenG they don't control the way a piece of media entertainment is distributed by another publisher. It's up to the other publisher if they want physical or digital.
The issue is, if the publisher doesn't see value in buying 32 gig cartridges for the game, they have a cost to the publisher that some publishers might not want to swallow, so they opt for a digital only.
This isn't Nintendo's fault.
On the matter of approval, it doesn't differ between physical and digital but the actual content of the piece of media in question, Nintendo obviously approved of the content, if it is to be released digitally.
But Bethesda, obviously doesn't see benefit in investing in physical cartridges for a physical release.
You seem to be seriously misinformation on this matter.
The future of EVERYTHING in this world belongs to the kids.
Why is it seen as a negative to cater to the needs of our future?
"Oh look these are silly kids games"... why because it's a kids game, does it make it silly?
It's something that honestly has to stop, and I'll put my damn hands up too, im guilty of it myself, it really has to stop, because it makes kids feel ashamed of playing games that are:
1) good for them, good for learning ect...
2) aimed at them.
Yeah Nintendo in general are a business aimed at a younger audience. Not everything they do, but as a whole, yes, they are.
What exactly is wrong with that?
Why is that an insult?
Does making games for adults mean success? Because Nintendo's main money maker (software development) is very successful.
Im trying to see the bad in what he said but i can't.
I see lots of kids getting their knickers in a twist because they want to grow up fast and stop being referred to as kids, but they'll get over that as adults.
This statement isn't an insult, it's the truth and it's a very good thing that it is like this.
Here's something to consider.
if Nintendo didn't focus on kids, the future of video games would be limited, it would be bleak and eventually it could even die out.
@WallyWest and you're an idiot if you think this is about one single issue.
This isn't one single issue and you are very narrow minded if you believe it is,this is an amalgamation of various issues. This is just one layer of a cake that Nintendo are currently baking.
You could say their shoddy internet infrastructure is another layer, lack of VC is one too, over priced Wii U ports with little improvement is adding to it, lack of any meaningful games in the entirety of 2020, attacking any fan with a desire to get creative with their IP and of course, attacking local group tournaments like this.
I won't even bother getting into Joy Con drift, but if you think that is a small group of people then you are seriously wrong on so many levels
You see, they are not alienating a single small group, but many many small groups.
Well if this keeps up, Nintendo will be painfully reminded who pays their bills.
Keep antagonising your customer base like this and they'll quickly find themselves in Wii U like dark days again.
I remember they went on TV basically begging people to try their console. If they keep this up maybe in a few years they'll be on TV begging people to buy their games again.
The customer is the hand that feeds you, you'd do well not to keep biting it.
We've had a rubbish year from them and when some fans try to do something interesting with their IPs they start attacking anything that moves, this'll start hurting them sooner than later.
I wanted to comment earlier but my head hurts so much from the stupidity of the reasoning that i just didn't bring myself to replying to this ridiculousness until hours after i meant too.
At this stage i expect, in terms of China and what we are seeing, this is only the beginning.
@RustedHero you have no idea, it's actually gotten out of hand, whats worse is, if i list some of the games in my backlog, I'd never hear the end of it 😅.
I would but the problem is, i have become addicted to buying games.
Not playing them.
Buy them. I'll buy 3-4 games at months end, play 1 or 2, but then sit on the other, i have 11 games still in wrapping and i own 32 physical games now. Not counting my digital collection for all indie games...
I have such a stupidly big back log that even if Nintendo discontinued the Switch today, i would be all set until their next endeavour.

Re: Poll: What's The Best Switch Game Of 2020? It's Time To Rate Your Favourites
@dartmonkey okay thats cool. I'm just going to leave it there...
Re: Feature: Why Open A Video Game Shop During A Global Pandemic?
Some people are bull headed and stubborn, sometimes that can work out but unfortunately that isn't always the case.
Re: Poll: What's The Best Switch Game Of 2020? It's Time To Rate Your Favourites
@dartmonkey yeah but come on man, so you genuinely believe someone is going to ask where Accidental Queens Collection is?
You definitely could have thinned this list out a lot.
I voted for 2 games because i couldn't be bothered to troll through the list to find what i was looking for.
Im sure im not the only one.
Re: Poll: What's The Best Switch Game Of 2020? It's Time To Rate Your Favourites
@JHDK a waste of money?

Re: Poll: What's The Best Switch Game Of 2020? It's Time To Rate Your Favourites
This list is stupid. Why would you put shovelware on here? 80% of these games are terrible.
Hades is Nintendo Goty this year. Which is sad really because as good as it is, it doesn't carry the Switch for 2020.

Re: Developers Of The New Perfect Dark Will Treat It "Very Carefully"
@Damo that is true but its sort of like rubbing salt on a wound that closed a while ago 😅.
Re: Developers Of The New Perfect Dark Will Treat It "Very Carefully"
@Rob3008 I have to agree here.
_____
It has nothing to do with Nintendo and hasn't done for more than 15 years, why is it on here?
Re: Capcom Is Releasing A Demo For Monster Hunter Rise, Will Be Available For A "Limited Time"
@JokerCK because everything Nintendo has been doing of late has been a limited time offer.
The Game & Watch
3D Mario collection
Mario Bros 35 (or whatever its called, I still need to try it).
Their doing a lot of limited time stuff for some reason and the next big thing people expect from Nintendo is a Switch Pro.
So people are just throwing it out there like it's going to happen but nobody really expects them to do that, it would be suicide for their business.
Re: Quantic Dream Is Bringing Sea Of Solitude: The Director's Cut To Switch In March
@gcunit actually no, the situation is even more backwards.
It's an "exclusive" that's already been released on other platforms over a year ago.
And it was pants then and it looks like pants now too.
They've added some bells and whistles (so they can call it an exclusive), but they've wasted their time, it looks as bad as the original.
Re: The Game Awards GOTY Is The Last Of Us Part 2
I didn't mind Last Of Us 2 but I have to admit, it isn't close to being the best game last year and it panders way to much to a political agenda.
Re: The Next Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighter Will Be Revealed During The Game Awards
I can't really get excited for Smash anymore.
It's not really that fun against a CPU all the time and Nintendo hasn't got dedicated servers so the online is junk.
Only good with friends coming over and since Covid 19, that hasn't happened too much.
I hope Nintendo announces something else but they've let me down continuously this year so i won't be holding my breath.
Re: Feature: What Does Nintendo Have Planned For Zelda’s 35th Anniversary?
My bet is on some 3D Zelda package much like the Mario one we got.
Hopefully with Ocarina, Twilight and Wind Waker in one package.
They could also make a big hoohaa around a Skyward Sword release (Hopefully they allow for a normal controller scheme for it too).
Re: Nintendo Switch Sold More Than 1.3 Million Units In China This Year
I'm not sure how to feel about this.
On the one hand im happy for Nintendo, i support them and this can only be good for their bottom line.
On the other hand China are a big problem. I'm not sure them having more influence on Nintendo is a good thing at all.
We could end up with a version of Mario holding a hammer and sickle...

More than welcome to chat 😁.

@GTHOLLAND no worries 👍.

@GTHOLLAND also you clearly read the first line of what i wrote and assumed you knew what i said.
You didn't.
No worries though, I'll let you off 😉.
Re: Monster Hunter Movie Director And Star Apologise To Chinese Viewers For Racist Joke
@GTHOLLAND lol you tell me not to talk nonsense when you obviously didn't understand what i wrote.
It's okay though, i can explain it for you.
I didn't mention the joke, or taking offence to the joke. It's not relevant to what i said, I'm not sure how you thought it was.
I mentioned that this is understandable because of the market size.
What has that got to do with the joke?
Re: Monster Hunter Movie Director And Star Apologise To Chinese Viewers For Racist Joke
Also this movie looks like a giant CGI monster took a dump all over the screen.
So it should do well in China.
Re: Monster Hunter Movie Director And Star Apologise To Chinese Viewers For Racist Joke
This is somewhat understandable, i don't agree with kowtowing to China but the size of the market makes it really quite a hard choice to make. Especially if you've made such a big project like this.
Re: Video: 16 Brutal Minutes Of DOOM Eternal Switch Gameplay
@StevenG No it isn't insane to ask for more.
You are absolutely correct.
What is insane is asking more from people who have NOTHING TO DO WITH IT.
Like we discussed earlier, you're pinning this on Nintendo when you should be asking more from Bethesda on this one.
It's like asking the hotel for a discount on your flight... when you should be asking the airline.
See that's the insane part.
Re: Video: 16 Brutal Minutes Of DOOM Eternal Switch Gameplay
@StevenG you seem to be seriously confused so I'm just not going to bother.
Re: Video: 16 Brutal Minutes Of DOOM Eternal Switch Gameplay
@StevenG They cannot force the other party to accept what they dictate.
Contracts are two way agreements.
Please don't be so foolish, these are public forums that anyone can read.
Re: Video: 16 Brutal Minutes Of DOOM Eternal Switch Gameplay
@StevenG you think Nintendo set the prices of other games not made by them?
LOL.
We are done here.
Re: Video: 16 Brutal Minutes Of DOOM Eternal Switch Gameplay
@StevenG its their walled garden but they cannot force developers and publishers to come into it.
Re: Video: 16 Brutal Minutes Of DOOM Eternal Switch Gameplay
@StevenG oh yeah right that makes perfect sense, and all developers would flock to them if Nintendo tried such arbitrarily stupid practices.
You seem to be confused with what Nintendo COULD DO... and what they wouldn't do.
Yes they could make it a requirement for all games to have Mario in it, but i doubt Bethesda would be making games for Nintendo if that were the case.
Like i said, you seem dead set on pinning this on Nintendo when ALL evidence points to the publisher doing it.
Re: Video: 16 Brutal Minutes Of DOOM Eternal Switch Gameplay
@StevenG also considering it was actually Bethesda themselves who made the statement that it would be digital only, it just makes tour entire argument all the more fantastical.
But again I've noticed, you seem dead set on pinning EVERYTHING on Nintendo, regardless of if it is their fault or not.
Re: Video: 16 Brutal Minutes Of DOOM Eternal Switch Gameplay
@StevenG catastrophe?
Nonsense.

Re: Poll: DOOM Eternal Is Out Today On Switch, Are You Getting It?
@FargusPelagius yeah they missed the boat on it so badly. It really was the perfect time back then.
Re: Video: 16 Brutal Minutes Of DOOM Eternal Switch Gameplay
Personally I'm not interested.
It costs under £20 on other hardware, looks better and comes in physical too.
I am not going to use 18 gigs of storage AND spend £50 when it's cheaper and looks better elsewhere.
Not a good deal imo.
Re: Video: 16 Brutal Minutes Of DOOM Eternal Switch Gameplay
@StevenG it's Bethesda doing it and i don't think Nintendo can get involved with the publishing of these games due to contractual obligations.
It's not as clear cut as you want to believe, you seem dead set on somehow pinning the fault on Nintendo though.

Re: Monster Hunter Movie's Chinese Premiere Reportedly Cancelled Due To Racist Joke
@johnvboy I don't want to talk politics here, I don't feel it's the right place for this.
In short. I personally feel China is taking a more aggressive approach to global relations in an attempt to insert it's global hegemony.
This is all part of that. This is political and it has nothing to do with taking offence to a joke.
The ridiculous part is China using a silly joke (said by an Asian actor no less) to ban this.
This is China laying down it's governance on other organisations in other countries and effectively hurting their business.
