Update (Thurs, 24th Jun, 2021): You can now grab the Raceway Set from Target here. It's currently out of stock, but more units are on the way!
Original Article: Remember the awesome looking Hot Wheels Mario Kart Rainbow Road Raceway Set that appeared a couple of months ago? Well, it looks like it's finally time for it to speed into stores.
Originally expected to launch back in May, the set will now hit retail on 24th June – that's later this week! Its suggested retail price will be $119.99 and we now have confirmation that it'll be available to pick up from Target (it also appeared on Amazon last month by mistake, so expect it to make another appearance there too).
Here's what you can expect for your money:
- Experience the iconic Mario Kart rainbow course in the physical realm with the Hot Wheels Mario Kart Rainbow Road Raceway track set!
- The rainbow-colored course reaches 8 feet long and 24 inches high for maximum thrills and has lights and sounds for a big impression!
- Two different layouts — straight or curved — create different races, controlled with an electronic start and a finish gate that displays the winner.
- The track set features a spinning question block, randomizer with pop-up features, 3D sculpted figures and decorations that add to the thrills.
- Get racing right out of the box with 2 included Mario Kart 1:64 scale die-cast karts, an exclusive King Boo and, of course, Mario! In addition to these exclusive die-casts, fans can also collect and race other Hot Wheels Mario Kart die-casts all together.
As noted above, the main set includes Mario and King Boo karts, but other characters are also available to collect separately.

I wish I was young enough to enjoy these without priority of responsibility before it.
In before someone says "urgh. I wanted it to be 12 feet. Oh well, might as well wait for a deep deep discount..."
@Paraka i wish i was rich enough to enjoy this with priority of responsibility 😂
Tempted to get it for my youngest's birthday. . .though I'd need to save up the cash.
Step 1: Build the playset.
Step 2: Break friendships.
Feels a bit sloppy to me to not have the corners in the same rainbow colours. That blueish colour track accounts for about half the course. Especially disappointing given how eye popping the rainbow pieces actually are, and look great for it.
This has my "40% off after Christmas yellow sticker at Target" name on it.
Reminds me of the Mega Bloks sets my kids had. Good times.
@rjejr Once you start comparing cars (and realize you have ~100) it can go on for hours. Some of the simplest sets were the most fun.
This one has a good first impression. I wonder if Nintendo will one day do the full licensing on RC racing vehicles on the higher end hobby level... probably started that way and landed on Mario Kart Live.
Man, I loved Hot Wheels as a kid, and if this would've launched when I was little I would've lost my mind.
if it looped back on itself this would be a guilty instant buy
but nope
no thanks
@MH4 Same here, good to know the kids of today will have fun with it, if they can fork up the cash!
@aaronsullivan You had 100 tracks or just cars? Besides that box - not my photo but we have that one - and a couple of blocks sets we used along w/ it my kids had a couple of other sets but nothing too crazy. No slot racing or real race tracks. Couple of "shake and go" kits, a big folding racetrack. Tons of those plastic train tracks w/ the airport they never used. Half my basement is a warehouse of boxed old toys. I suppose the idea is my grandkids use them some day, but my guess is by the time they come around they'll just slap a Oculus Quest headset on them at birth and let them live out their lives in the matrix. 😝 In the future the dystopian big brother "Truman Show" will look like the quaint good old days when people lived in the real world. 😂
Can they stop? My kid's room is running out of room with all these Mario Hot Wheels tracks and Mario Legos...
Pretty darn cool, my nephew would definitely dig this. They even have my boy King Boo.
@damien33ad
The color patterns change depending on which version of Mario Kart is being played. Mario Kart DS, for example, has its rainbow patterns arranged like this, with no checker patterns.
I won't be getting one, but wow it looks cool.
Unlimited fun for about 1 second at a time
I personally find this hideous. What's with all the grey plastic? Why no fancy gold railing like in the games? For this price I imagine they could have made it a little less Fisher-Price-esque.
@rjejr (the 100 was the cars that the kids would race and rank)
We have the "warehouse" basement but are looking to offload as much as possible soon.
My wife and I really loved the Takara Tomy train sets that had a rebrand in the US as Trackmaster with Thomas the Train (before they switched to a different system later). We made some elaborate room-filling set ups interwoven with other types of sets like Hot Wheels and LEGO Duplos (and got a bunch of Quatros when LEGO was discontinuing them and offloading them for cheap!). The kids liked it, too.
We kept a bunch of baby stuff for a long time thinking for relatives that might have kids, but none of them really did and baby stuff doesn't age well, with safety requirements, etc. The toys, our youngest had a hard time letting go for awhile. It's time to try again. I don't want to let go of the LEGOs. There is too much value in having MANY of them. And I even got sets that were mostly for me back during the LOTR movies - those sets were really great.
@aaronsullivan My college son's room is filled of built Lego sets, mostly Ninjago. I still have some from when I was a kid back when they were blocks, not sets. M ykids were never into Thomas the Tank so we missed those. And what to do w/ over 100 Skylanders, 50 Disney Infinity toys, nearly every Lego Dimension set and the ever growing amiibo?
This is full now, w/ some sets still unopened in the boxes. I keep saying my wife and I will play them someday when we're empty nesters. Could happen. 🤷♂️
@rjejr We were not into Thomas the Train either, actually. We got a big but generic TOMY train set that seemed to be a special Holiday stocked item at Toys R Us and then, when we noticed that there were compatible sets branded as Thomas the Train we expanded it further and further.
Most of our Disney Infinity toys are in a box, but I still like quite a few of them and they are displayed here and there. The amiibo still have a nice display inside a cabinet (with other gaming things).
I kind of miss Disney Infinity. I feel like they all should have transitioned to a model where the toys were more toy-like and they had optional cards (that could also be used in a traditional card game). They just needed to make sure they continued to feel relevant and useful for longer. Also, the games themselves needed an injection of extra budget which is probably a big part of why they shut it down.
With Disney+ and subscriptions and bringing all their franchises together, Disney Infinity really feels like it would fit in just fine. I don't miss the rarity and their way of stocking as much as possible probably meant a ton of unsold product that could not be moved... but yeah cards could help that etc.
