Later this year, Forever Entertainment is reviving Sega's classic light gun zombie-shooter, The House of the Dead.
If you're curious to know how this remake of the 1996/97 arcade hit holds up on the Switch before its arrival, it's now reportedly been revealed in a recent Fragments of Silicon interview (via The Wiki of the Dead Twitter account).
In terms of frame rate, the game will run at 60fps docked and 30fps in handheld mode, and across both modes, it'll be displayed in 720p. The Wiki of the Dead also went on to provide some additional information:
-Coming first to Switch, currently testing on 4 different platforms. Likely a Steam release.
-UI has been redesigned.
-Classic Mode (original game with updated graphics).
-Horde Mode (fast-paced, 15 times the number of enemies. Unlockable characters and other things).
-Several control options offered, including JoyCon sticks and gyro controls.
-Remade voice acting, purposely "bad".
-Music "extremely inspired" by the original, no option to listen to original's OST.
-The engine is Unity, like Panzer Dragoon: Remake.
-HD Rumble for gun shooting effects.
-For research, the team played the original game via original hardware and emulation.
-No option to play the original HOTD; sources lost and it's "impossible" to rip assets.
-"Nostalgic Mode" with lower-poly graphics considered if there is enough demand.
-A demo of the remake may be considered if enough people request it on Discord and Twitter.
-The remake team has worked with Sega, but have not really talked to staff at Sega AM1, HOTD's original developer.
-COVID has not affected production; the team is used to working remotely.
-It was always planned for HOTD 1 + 2 remakes to be released separate.
-The ragdoll physics when killing enemies will not be changed; it is a "critical" feature for some weapons. Boss death animations will be unchanged.
-Crosshairs are different colors for each player.
-Blood color can be changed.
-Unlikely that the game will be at E3.
-Price point may be in $15-20 range.
-The controls were "tricky" to implement, but the remake team is not concerned over any possible backlash.
-The HOTD remake improves daily, and is claimed to be in a better state today than when Panzer Dragoon: Remake was launched.

No IR sensor? I'd rather play 2,3 and overkill on Wii.
@Moistnado
It does say "-The controls were "tricky" to implement, but the remake team is not concerned over any possible backlash." So I think it's worth waiting it out until it's actually released.
Or maybe the devs are just speaking without thinking or in stupendous delusion. Who knows.
Oh, 720p 60fps docked. Interesting. Not a complaint. I'd prefer the 60fps anyway.
60 in docked but 30 in handheld? Not bad but switch lite users will probably be complaining
gyro controls? nice! I can't wait! I hope there's a physical version like Panzer Dragoon.
@WoomyNNYes in docked mode. Handheld mode, it is 30 fps
15 to 20 dollar price tag? That is pretty cheap
I can't wait for this. Great price range too. 🙂
@The_New_Butler 720p is fine and all. It’s just weird that it’s 30 FPS in handheld mode but 60 in docked.
Kinda like Bowsers Fury
Ok, now this is a must
Will buy at launch
@caiozf not to mention a great price range as well. But handheld is interesting but it’s fine
@The_New_Butler no
It is 30 FPS in handheld mode. 720p is fine imo. But they are still deciding what they are doing
I used to be one of those guys at the arcade that would pew pew with both the guns, solo. Fun times, there will never be another arcade experience quite like House of the Dead. Great for resting in between DDR sets!
I really miss arcades!!!!
Interested in hearing reviews about the gyro controls. I love playing Overkill on the Wii U. Hopefully the remakes come close to the light gun experience.
@BloodNinja I did the same thing for this one and Part 2. Nothing like dual wielding the light guns.
@ecco6t9 People at the arcades would find it entertaining, for some reason! I just did it to cheese the bosses LOL
@Slowdive None of my friends and I could agree on how to say Quarl!!! 😀
The controls were "tricky" to implement, but the remake team is not concerned over any possible backlash
This sentence alone implies that no effort to utilise a light gun style mechanic has been applied.
Yeah, but I don't get to "Suffer like G did," in the first house of the dead.
Still, I'm all in.
@Moistnado oh man if Sega would bring Overkill! That would be first day buy.
That game was awesome!
@NeonPizza and yet RE Village on PS4 is at like 900p
@anoyonmus Ok, I've been reading through this comment section and you seem to be replying to a lot of comments and seem to know a lot about what's going on with this game. Are you one of the guys working on this game?
@MEGAMAN_D hahahahahahah no. I am not
i think this will be fun. cannot wait for it.
All the sudden gone from a must-buy to a wait and see. Don't like the sounds of it from the control stand point. Wish Sega would've not been lazy, put up the $ to get the Overkill team on this (or a sequel to Overkill) and implemented a control scheme similar to the Wii remote which wasn't perfect but close enough to light-gun experience. It is possible to get close to Wii remote controls on the Switch but it sounds like that, disappointingly, wasn't done here.
So I can play the original House of The Dead on my PC but they have no way of doing the same here 🤔
I hope the gyro controls are good as that's definitely the way to play these games and I'm looking forward to it, 60fps docked is great as it's not something I'll play portable
@BloodNinja I've got the arcade game running on my PC and a modern light gun on order to recreate those great times on my 4K TV
@NeonPizza I'm sure they could have done something but there will be no excuse for the second game. The biggest issue is the lack of a light gun substitute, though there is one which hopefully will take off
My friend and I played this so much back in the day, I can’t wait to relive the experience again.
@carlos82 I didn’t know there are modern light guns!! Hmmmm!!!!
@BloodNinja sinden lightgun, its only for PC at the moment but has a camera to see exactly where you're pointing at the screen to control the mouse cursor. From the player perspective its exactly the same as using an old lightgun and if successful could be adapted for modern consoles too https://youtu.be/hfo004_4xwU
Can't wait for this. I hope we get the virtua cop games at some point too.
@Lord
Yep...
If there’s not such a way to play, there will be backslash no matter sharp gyro aim is.
Purposely bad voice acting?! Count me in! I'm a bad voice acting connoisseur! From "Nooo this isn't happening! There's no reason to go on, what.. WHAT AM I FIGHTING FOOOOOOR?!" to "Ooh, forgotten gods of ancient times!"
Does Panzer Dragoon remake also run at 60 fps docked or does it run at 30fps in both docked and handheld? I thought it was the latter. So that's good that they managed to remedy that for HotD which uses the same engine.
EDIT: I just saw they released an update to PD that bumped it up to 60.
@carlos82 That looks pretty awesome! Might try to acquire one! Thanks man
I'll have to buy it because the Wii house of the dead came with 2, 3 and a new game over kill. I expect the controls to not be as good as the wii but I'm hoping they are decent. Not playing with a stick, it needs to feel like a gun in your hand.
Any fans of this game notice the overuse of the phrase "don't come"? It's like the devs only recorded 2 words for dialogue and tried to plaster it all over the game.
Not my kind of game, but I like that they prioritized the frame rate. Still a pity that it has to be 720p though. Bring on the new Switch.
@BloodNinja - "Great for resting in between DDR sets!"
Ahh, a fellow DDRtist. You played both sides of HOTD, I always played both sides of the DDR pad 😄 Doubles. Although these days I'm lucky to get through 3 double songs on Heavy without my legs giving out 😅 If I happen to come across a machine, that is.
@Prizm I did double play, too! I LOVED playing doubles, so much fun! Some of those heavy charts felt like flying! I competed a little bit here and there, and played for 15 years. I used to be able to do Maxx Unlimited on expert with my back to the screen from start to finish. Oh, those were the days! This was my favorite step, towards the end of my playing "career" if you could call it that!

Not interested unless there's a Typing mode.
@accc It targets 60fps in performance mode, but doesn't hit it very consistently the last time I played it. However, I've clocked 4 or 5 hours into my Switch cartridge of Panzer Dragoon and loved it. For me it looks smooth enough. Of course a locked 60fps would be very, very welcome.
Pikmin looks great at 720p, and so do the Bayonettas. I wish Pikmin could run at 60, but it looks nice on TV. This should be fun at 720p 60fps while docked, as long as the controls are good.
@NeonPizza You don't play Splatoon w/gyro, do you? Sure it's the best possible example of gyro aiming, and made by Nintendo, but you can cover a large area of screen and 'snap' to various targets easily as long as the developers can implement it well enough. It's really the best pointer option Switch owners have since we're 4 years into the lifespan and no one has come up with a on rail-shooting game that works with the IR. IR by itself is too slow, the sensor bar is what made it fast.
I think games like these were best on the Wii with the remotes infrared pointer function. The newer tech just doesn't work as well. Even the PS3 Move controls were awful for House of the Dead and anyone who argues otherwise is free to settle this in the ring. Even so, I'd like to be proven wrong about shooting games with Switch motion controls. Still, the fact that the Switch doesn't even have motion controls for Zombie Panic in Wonderland while the Wii version did doesn't look promising.
Aren't Polymega making a gun that works on non CRT screens? That's what I want. So many amazing games could be remade and sequelled if that became the standard.
@60frames-please the 720p looks good enough or great comments are really subjective. Perhaps there are people that believe that but there are others like myself which have tried and given up on anything less than 900p.
Just isn't the same without the light gun gameplay.
Hopefully the PS4 iteration has Move support. Then I can enjoy all four of the mainline entries on my modern displays (Already own II and III via the Wii collection and IV on my PS3).
They could release a light gun peripheral, or try something with the IR sensor. I'd put a reflective sticker under my TV. Gyro only isnt good enough for me.
I know I'm hung up on the lack of IR controls but it is the reason the HOTD games on Wii were so much better than their more powerful counterparts on ps3 and Xbox 360. If the Switch can't do proper pointer controls, Ps4 (and ps5 I think) has psmove which would make this the best option to play this game.
@sixrings Yeah, and it probably depends on your TV. I've just got a 1080 set. I assume that with a 4K TV 720p looks quite a bit more blurry. But to me, Bayonetta 1 and 2 look pretty awesome on my medium old TV.
I played HotD 2 on Dreamcast (with the regular controller!) and Overkill on Wii, but never the 1st one. Nostalgia will get me to buy #2, but I'll skip this one.
I'm not concerned, despite what people say about panzer dragoon remake I thought it was pretty decent and I should know I was a Saturn kid and still play the saturn to this day so........ we're in good hands and clearly these guys have a passion for these old school 32 bit sega games.
As for the controls, once again I think we're all good, they wouldn't even bother making it if they wasn't confident they could recreate the feel of a light gun.
But here are MY concerns:
720p? Docked? really guys? C'mon now
Physical copy? I need it and this needs to happen or I won't be happy
I suppose that this game will be released on Series S/X (probably 4K on Series X) like Panzer Dragoon Remake was released on Xbox One. I wonder what happened to Panzer Dragoon 2 Remake and if they'll remake other House of the Dead games. 2 seems likely.
@60frames-please I understand that as it looks decent on my 1080 set. However I think there has to be quite a few of us that like to play our consoles on our best TVs in the house. Not on the about to be put to the curb TVs.
That said I bought a 1080p Samsung QLED 32 inch frame this week so at least I can have e best 1080p experience possible even if it’s damn small.
I'm not a huge specs guy, but 720p docked is bizarrely low. ESPECIALLY for rail shooter style games like House of the Dead, where the graphics have historically been very good for their respective era and platforms (Virtua Cop in mid-90's arcades, Sin & Punishment on the N64, Resident Evil Chronicles on the Wii, etc). If they can't meet the usual standards in a remake of a 1996 game, I'm skeptical that the rest of the package will hold up.
They REALLY need to support the IR camera on the right Joycon, IR controls can pretty much perfectly simulate a lightgun while gyro controls are simply not good enough.
I remember this team made some mistakes with the original release of their Panzer Dragoon Remake, and then greatly improved the game based on fan feedback , so i think using social media and Email to tell the developers about the superiority of IR aiming and the possibility to use it with the right Joycon makes sense.
I'm worried as hell about this release
Was really looking forward to this if the light gun controls could somewhat be mimicked. Doesn’t sound like that will be an option, but we’ll see. A peripheral with similar capabilities would be awesome.
15€? If done properly I'd be glad to spend my money on this remake and even on a Virtua Cop Remake if someday they'll decide do make one.
I wish Bandai Namco could apply the same threatment to the first Time Crisis and to Deadstorm Pirates. They used to be a joy to play in the arcades back in the days...
@BloodNinja said "I competed a little bit here and there, and played for 15 years"
haha nice. Paranoia Respect was actually about the only Paranoia I liked playing (maybe a little Rebirth). I did a fair number of doubles songs on Expert/Heavy, but for Respect I did it on Difficult. Expert was just ridiculous 😅 Did you actually do it Expert without the bar?
I know most people used the bar, but I always thought it looked lame, so I only played songs that I could do without it. Some I enjoyed on doubles were AA (great for gliding around the pads), Can't Stop Fallin Speed Mix (those repeat notes are a killer when you're tired though), No 13, original Healing Vision, Jana Jana was a nice warm up and looked good. Always liked Still in My Heart Momo and Sakura on Challenge.
@Prizm Same! And I never had problems scoring high without the bar. The newer steps Konami craps out seem to require the bar, so I'm not into those. I did Respect expert without the bar, but I could never score higher than an A! That song gave me a whooping! LOL Sakura is a classic! Such a fun song. Ah, memories. I miss those days!
@BloodNinja said "I did Respect expert without the bar"
goddamn 👌😄
