Re: Review: King of Seas - Naval Combat Gets Grindy After A Promising Start

Pirate1

I enjoyed the first half of the demo (getting into things). It turned grindy really fast for me. Sail here, pick up this. Sail there, drop it off. Come back to base. I know that’s the gameplay loop for a lot of games, but the only thing that happens in between those parts here is that you may come across another ship to fight or treasure sitting in the wide open. I was really hopeful for this game, too.

Re: Talking Point: When Was The Last Time A Game Cracked Your Top Five?

In no particular order

  • Janes Longbow 2
  • MS Flight Sim
  • BoTW
  • Age of Empires II
  • grim Fandango
  • although Mario odyssey (along with BOTW) did get me back into gaming after a 15 year hiatus)

Notable mentions:

  • Immortals Fenyx Rising
  • Skyrim (still working on, haven’t finished yet)
  • Homeworld
  • The Room games
  • Myst (once I figured out how the heck to play it)
  • Masters of Orion

Re: SnowRunner For Nintendo Switch Might Include Mod Support

@scottishwildcat it sounds like you may be surprised to find how professional a lot of mods are. I’ve been downloading them since MS flight simulator 95 (individual planes were available back then, good ones were a couple bucks a piece!). There is some ridiculous talent out there coming from people that just enjoy this stuff for fun.

Re: King Of Seas Demo Arrives Today On Nintendo Switch eShop

Very happy to see they’re providing a demo. I really like a lot of the Team17 stuff and this seems interesting. I don’t think I would have really considered purchasing until it had a really good sale (which I still might do), but this at least gives me the opportunity to see if it’s a day one (or soon thereafter).

Re: Talking Point: Is "Cheesing" A Legitimate Strategy?

Pirate1

I wouldn’t consider myself a cheese whiz-ard, but I think it can be fun to figure out tricks in solo play (especially any time a particularly difficult level has you feeling bleu).

Edit: I enjoyed cheesing in Fenyx rising quite a bit. And that is one of my favorite subtitles ever

Re: Ubisoft Is Making A Film About A Female Video Game Reviewer Who's "Unlucky In Love"

Let me guess, she falls in love with the silent type, gets sent on a crazy impossible suicide mission (by some damn princess) to save the world, fails but comes back as a ghost only to find out that the same princess is now the only person who shows up in the love of her life’s dreams and constantly is begging to be saved and theirs nothing the protagonist can do about it at this point because she can’t control the laser-shooting elephant any more.

@Grandiajet I’m with you. My wife loves this game, so we play it (thankfully 3D world has taken over recently). But what you mentioned and random fires starting are more frustrating than fun to me. I do think some of the levels are enjoyable, but I’d prefer if it was a timed game with some movement/puzzle mechanics, not the other random stuff. I believe I’m in a very tiny minority for this view, tho.

Digital Foundry has a good video comparing the game between PS5 and Switch. It’s not a good video because of the comparison (I don’t have a PS5) but to see how it performs (with lots of examples and details) both docked and handheld. If you’re considering getting the game and have more questions about performance on switch, check it out! TLDR seems to be it runs well for what it is with downgrades (pretty steady 30fps, too).
