Re: Valve Announces Steam Deck OLED, Says Switch OLED Paved The Way

Parkour_LMan

@blindsquirrel It can't really be 4K on a 720p display, can it? But TOTK might be able to run at 720p 90fps with the new hardware, if it's at least 3x as powerful as the original Switch, because it means drawing the same frames in 1/3 the time. It's certainly possible, though it depends on how fast they'll have the SoC run.

As for 4K, that will be completely impossible, but upscaling via DLSS could get there, or at least close to it. Nvidia has recently boasted about massively improving upscaling from 720p to 4K, so it could apply to the new console.

Re: Valve Announces Steam Deck OLED, Says Switch OLED Paved The Way

Parkour_LMan

@thesilverbrick That is purely false. Eyes don't see "fps"; the more still images exist, the smoother the motion appears. While there is an argument to be made for what the upper bound for diminishing returns is, it's way above 60hz. There's a reason that all commercial displays are now getting higher refresh rates (TVs, smartphones, laptops, etc.) - people can notice it. The difference becomes less the higher the numbers go, but it exists.

Re: Valve Announces Steam Deck OLED, Says Switch OLED Paved The Way

Parkour_LMan

@blindsquirrel Didn't Valve just release a console that does all that for $550? Where did you get the $1000 figure? Nintendo can get a similarly specced console for less than $500. Probably even $400 if they really want to. And considering that the SoC rumoured for the Switch 2 sounds comparable to the Steam Deck's, that's probably a good point of comparison.

Re: Super Mario Party + Red & Blue Joy-Con Bundle Announced

Parkour_LMan

@LavaTwilight The red one is definitely not new, as it has been featured in multiple Mario bundles (starting from Odyssey) and was also available separately, at least on their online store (that's where I got my reds).

The blue one is being released for the first time outside of Japan after being exclusive to custom Switch orders on Nintendo's website, though its pair has existed in the Blue + Neon Yellow bundle from October 2019. I honestly feel sorry for the Joy-Con collectors that probably exist, as they really must have it rough with all of these exclusive bundles...

Re: Random: Following 3DS/Wii U Online Shutdown, Fans Look To Create More Public Servers

Parkour_LMan

@AstroTheGamosian Two reasons: one, reverse engineering has been rather well documented in court to hold up against copyright laws. While having lawyers argue is expensive, the cost is mitigated a lot when you have favourable past cases whose decisions will help to void the opposition's arguments.

Secondly, it is open source. The beauty of it is that, even if everyone on the team "jumped" off of a cliff, the code is available online, and anyone can keep a copy of it and improve upon it. In my opinion, the matter of open vs closed source is essential for any hacking/modding activities, because once you make the project proprietary then there is more of an incentive for the company to go after you. (see: team exeggutor and nintendo)

Re: Rumour: Metroid Prime Remaster Apparently Lined Up For November, Prime 2 And 3 To Follow

Parkour_LMan

@NintendoWife It's not "less polished", more like lower effort put into the re-release. Recent lower effort examples would be stuff like Mario 3D Collection and DKC Tropical Freeze Switch, whereas something like Ocarina 3D and Twilight Princess HD are higher effort, maybe even Skyward Sword. But most notably, Mario Kart 8's DLC is a good example of low and high effort content released by Nintendo. The original Wii U DLC (and original retro tracks) had very high graphical detail, with high resolution textures and a lot of detail added to the courses. The battle mode changes in Deluxe are also had very detailed maps. However, the new DLC just rips levels straight out of Tour without many changes (both the Tour originals and retro tracks). That's low effort content that they sell for a relatively high price because of the sheer volume of it. So I imagine Prime 1 would be like a Mario Kart 8 track, or Ocarina 3D, while 2 and 3 would be similar to Tour levels.

Re: Rumour: Metroid Prime Remaster Apparently Lined Up For November, Prime 2 And 3 To Follow

Parkour_LMan

@Yosher The Zelda collector's edition on Gamecube exists, and they released remastered/remade versions of Ocarina and Majora individually on 3DS and on the Virtual Console. It wouldn't be the first time. DKC Tropical Freeze and Skyward Sword is another example of game pricing increasing on Switch compared to Wii U. Also, early next year the Prime Trilogy will re-enter unobtainium territory once the Wii U eshop drops the option to purchase games altogether. There's not even a need to remove it from storefronts.

Considering that Metroid has a comparatively smaller but quite dedicated fan base, it makes quite a lot of sense to get more money out of them with remasters on switch. I can see that, if what Grubb is true, Prime 1 could sell for full price while 2 and 3 release together as one SKU and are available separately on the eshop, similar to the Bayonetta 1 and 2 or Resident Evil Revelations 1&2 Switch re-releases.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Leaker Shares Details Of A New "Finished" Fire Emblem On Switch

Parkour_LMan

There is some sense in not releasing the new game until now. A new cast would make the new Three Hopes game's setting old and Nintendo might fear that it would hurt the sales of this spin-off. Therefore, they will just sit on the unfinished game until 3H sells enough, and release it then. Maybe development for 3H took too long and delayed their plans, or it started later and they thought to do this.

Re: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Artist Talks About "Frustrating" Zelda Rumours

Parkour_LMan

To use his quote: "To have longevity in this hobby [gaming], you need to be adaptable."

I feel like all those NeoGAF dudes would live far longer if they could enjoy good games of all franchises and genres, because sooner or later they'll cut themselves from edginess and die of dehydration from all the salt.

It's not like DKC was an oversaturated series like, for example, Mario Party during the Gamecube generation. Just let it be.

Re: Fall Guys Is Going Free-To-Play, Comes To Switch This Summer With Cross-Play And A Huge Update

Parkour_LMan

What does the article mean with xbox series s doing 2K? That's not a real output resolution. It (wrongly) substitutes both 1080p (1920x1080) and 1440p (2560x1440) in online discourse. By definition, it is much closer to 1080p, but a lot of people confuse 1440p with 2K.

While 4K is also not really true 4K, it is at least clearly used in marketing for 2160p resolution. Fun fact: 2K (2048x1080) and 4K (4096x2160) are actually resolutions used in cinema video recording, because they're larger on both sides than the full 1920x800 and 3840x1600 resolutions typically used in commercial movies.

Re: New LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga Trailer Highlights The "Greatest Villains"

Parkour_LMan

@Astral-Grain Wasn't it already reported that the founder and other people had left and made a new studio? The new people seemed much better, according to the same report (which wasn't made by NL, but they reported on that news). And yes, the allegations have been ignored and should have been addressed, but at least the report had said that they've done some internal changes. At the very least it's better than Ubisoft, who still haven't done anything and will not acknowledge their issues, instead getting into NFTs, possibly hoping that this controversy will bury the (more serious) workplace ones.

Re: Random: We Need To Talk About That Street Fighter 6 Logo, Capcom

Parkour_LMan

The leaked capcom stuff from a while ago basically showed all games coming out in the next few years, and SF6 is exclusive to PS5 and PC if I recall correctly. So even if Xbox somehow managed to negotiate it onto their platform too (very unlikely at this stage), there's basically no way it also comes out on Switch.

Re: Are Complaints About Pokémon Legends: Arceus' Graphics Fair? Digital Foundry Digs In

Parkour_LMan

I don't get the complaints about the video. The theme is pokemon's graphic quality. They already said all that needed to be said about gameplay. In fact, they didn't need to have talked about it at all, since it has nothing to do with the video. If you wish to see people praise the game or rate it as an overall package, read or watch a review. They expanded upon many points of concern regarding its visual performance, between the unimpressive asset quality and certain issues like asset pop-in, which is a rather jarring aspect that could've been greatly mitigated with something like a fade-in animation. Pokemon Arceus is not the greatest game ever made, there are many shortcomings to Gamefreak's first open-world game. Zelda had a much better overall package in its first open-world entry on the same console. Of course, it is the first time pokemon changed up the formula that had already gotten stale since 15 years ago. However, that doesn't excuse the game from any criticism, especially since this is the greatest media franchise in terms of revenue. This will be many children's first pokemon game, and they really deserve a better experience.

Re: Koei Tecmo Confirms Fatal Frame And Blue Reflection Sales

Parkour_LMan

Does the 340k include wii u sales or just the new multiplatform release? Because if it's the former it's not that great, but if it's the latter then it's pretty good. Also, a bit of a shame that they didn't really make it a definitive edition with all costumes of the wii u version on switch.

Re: Metroid Prime Dev Confirms That Nintendo Blocked The Addition Of Super Metroid To The Game

Parkour_LMan

@Troll_Decimator I wouldn't say that the company having bad press regarding crunch is bad for their sales (most people do not care, as seen in online discussions), however it does impair their ability to employ new staff, which ultimately leads to problems during development. Nobody wishes to work at a place where you won't be able to spend time with your family for weeks. In fairness to Nintendo, they appear to have changed Retro's work environment after Prime 1, and from investor reports it seems they have some of the healthiest work environments regarding work hours. (7-8 hrs per day average, I recall)

Re: Soapbox: Why Apollo Justice Might Be The Best Ace Attorney Game

Parkour_LMan

Apollo was a nice game, but it played it too safe in my opinion. It was too centered around Phoenix, starting off with a case where he's accused of murder while Apollo just appears out of nowhere defending him.

Ace Attorney 1 had many people with personal connections to Phoenix, such as Larry, Edgeworth, Mia and Maya... Whereas the only one connected to Apollo was his mentor, a relationship that wasn't explored at all. He felt disconnected from the world around him, if that makes sense.

Now, my following complaint is mostly about Dual Destinies, but it should've at least acknowledged the jury system introduced at the end of AJ, they just needed to say that while the last case of AJ is valid, the government decided to not use it going forward, especially because of the ugly last case of Phoenix.

Anyways, Kate, go play Investigations 2 right now. It's great. There's a reason why many consider it the greatest in the series. You can find it on ebay for 20-30 pounds (for morality reasons) and then download a rom and patch it with the translation. It plays like the first one, but has a much more connected storyline and features some elements you enjoyed from Apollo Justice.

Re: Hardware Review: Nintendo Switch OLED - The Screen's The Star

Parkour_LMan

Rather disappointed at the lack of mention of OLED's susceptibility to burn-in. Of course, manufacturers deny that it's a problem, but it is, especially for PCs and games where certain parts of the image don't change. It's precisely for this reason that I wouldn't recommend buying an OLED switch unless you either won't play the same game too much (unlikely) or if you're ready to either compromise with images burned into the screen. To minimise burn-in, you should not use full brightness and change games or turn off the screen from time to time.

Re: ESA Attacks World Health Organisation's Decision To Classify Gaming Addition As A Mental Disorder

Parkour_LMan

@GreatApeEscape Still, it shouldn't be made as an addiction of its own. Numerous people could be considered addicted to social media, sports and other forms of entertainment. I would also argue that social media can be the most addicting out of all tech related hobbies. Instead of making gaming out to be an addiction on its own, there should be a more generalised type of addiction to relatively harmless activities, whose only downside is spending too much time doing it (which are the only symptoms the WHO provided). There is nothing special to someone addicted to playing games, and I don't think you can really be addicted to playing games in general, but to one game maybe (especially online games where you rank up, because that process can take a long time and is probably the only way someone would end up playing a game instead of doing what they actually need to do.

Re: Gallery: These Nintendo Switch VR Mock-Ups Are Rather Eye-Catching

Parkour_LMan

@daveh30 If you want a good experience, you need to pay $500+ for an accessory + sensors. VR is not good for the normal buyer with those prices; I, for one, wouldn't pay that much for a headset. It's not such a bad resolution either (not the best, but could be worse) and the hardware power should be more than enough. VR doesn't require any specific power; it's just rendering two images for each eye, similar to the 3D for the 3DS.

Re: Talking Point: Imagining a Future Nintendo Switch Budget Spin-Off - A Non-Switching Microconsole

Parkour_LMan

@capitalism The dock will not be available in the base package, though. Just the Switch and the JoyCons. But if there is a deluxe package, it's probably with the dock and the JoyCon Grip. The Pro Controller, while pretty nice, has always been the kind of secondary controller, and I doubt they would include an unnecessary thing that would increase the cost of the package (because you could just use the JoyCons, and having the Grip makes more sense, as it's undoubtedly cheaper and the same as a Pro Controller, button-wise).

Re: Review: Axiom Verge (Wii U eShop)

Parkour_LMan

@helbertpina I believe the creator said that he won't bring it to the 3DS, but the AxiomVerge twitter account said in a comment that he is glad the NX should have a 720p screen so he would be able to know what he's dealing with (not the exact same words, but something similar). So, I guess it's either PS4+Vita, Steam, XB1, Wii U or NX.

Re: Feature: Pokémon Sun and Moon - Breaking Down The Most Exciting New Features

Parkour_LMan

But will there still be Mega Evolutions? Not necessarily in this game, but in future games. I mean, they won't scrap all that work they put in the designs of every Mega Evolution, right? They could still be present, but in another form (like making a strong bond with your Pokémon could allow you to Mega Evolve it, like Ash's Greninja does). And they could just be banned in online battles/batte chateau, if they want to keep them out of the competitive scene.

Re: Buddy & Me: Dream Edition

Parkour_LMan

@MamaLuigi Actually, Armature is just porting Unreal Engine 4 to Wii U and PS Vita for the game. They aren't involved in the game's gameplay/art/level design. And a previous game they made was a Batman Arkham Metroidvania game for the 3DS and Vita (which didn't have too much colour).

Re: Pokémon GO Now Available In Italy, Spain and Portugal

Parkour_LMan

@VanillaLake @Azooooz You know that it doesn't do that, right? That was just an error that has been fixed now. It was obvious that it shouldn't have been there when it only did that to iOS users. And this game was done in collaboration with Google, why would they need your Gmail when they can basically do anything with it? Please stop claiming that people would tell someone things for no reason.
