Publisher Ubisoft has announced that it has shut down online multiplayer functionality for a bunch of its older games, many of which can be found on the Wii and Wii U. You can view Ubisoft's full announcement here.
Naturally, this means that you'll no longer be able to play online, however the move also extends to disable unlockable content, player statistics, and functionality with Ubisoft Connect. If you've previously redeemed unlockable content on console, it will continue to be accessible unless you reset your game entirely. PC players will get the short end of the stick, however, as unlockable content will be completely inaccessible, even if you've redeemed it previously.
The company has also clarified that if a game did not transfer over from Uplay to Ubisoft Connect in 2020, then all rewards associated with the service will be unlocked automatically.
While the announcement itself is seemingly out of the blue, many of the games mentioned have already effectively been "sunset" years ago. In fact, we reported back in 2018 Ubisoft's intention to shutdown online functionality for several Just Dance titles. Although the list includes some previously unannounced titles, the post itself seems more of a public service announcement to clarify that Ubisoft's plans have now been fulfilled - at least for the Just Dance series.
Here's a list of all games effected by the announcement; we've highlighted those found on Wii and Wii U in bold:

One of the oldest games listed by Ubisoft was 2005's Rainbow Six Lockdown, however its inclusion will be in relation to the Xbox and PlayStation 2 versions, as it did not support online multiplayer on GameCube.
Have you been affected by the announcement in any way? Be sure to let us know in the usual place.

Oh so this isn’t some routine thing, that’s a lot of games
None of these are recent games and I doubt they have a large player base. So it makes sense.
Me : Not at all.
I played my games OFFLINE so I will not miss a thing.
Also, I played these Ubisoft games:
Rabbids games on Wii
Imagine games on Wii, NDS and 3DS
Petz games on NDS and 3DS
Dog Island Wii
Motion sports Adrenaline PS3
Wheel of Fortune + Jeopardy Switch
What? The multiplayer servers of the ultimate Halo-Killer "Haze" survived long enough to see the release of Halo Infinite on the successor of the successor of the 360? Ubi is really really awful, but you have to give them credit for keeping all these servers online for a handful of players of these last-last-gen games.
"One of the oldest games listed by Ubisoft was 2005's Rainbow Six Lockdown..."
That's 17 years ago, folks. Many of the users on this site likely weren't even born yet.
Boy, do I feel like an old fart right about now...
It would be nice to know what "online functionality" covers in this case.
That's not necessarily online multiplayer, it could be things like the ability to purchase and redownload add-on content (like Just Dance music tracks), or just leaderboard functionality.
This is a huge list of games losing online functionality though.
A big list but a real yeah these are very old to the point I'm shocked at some where still going til now
Must be part of that “getting books ready for sale” measure by cutting expenses on very old games
Genuinely still play the Rainbow Six Vegas games, but admittedly almost entirely on local co op.
RIP Splinter Cell Blacklist on Wii U. I haven’t played it in ages, but I loved it. Please bring it to Switch, I’ll play it again.
@RupeeClock : I imagine it would be all encompassing of any online connectivity.
Mindscape released a number of U-Sing games, and their DLC shops went offline long before the Wii Shop Channel closed down (trying to open the in-game shop would cause the software to crash). Any pre-downloaded material will survive a system transfer, but as far as I know, the content cannot be recovered otherwise, and I imagine similar would occur in the case of the Just Dance games (and similar).
@Silly_G Lol I was born in 1977 when Computers had green text on a black screen.
I never played online that much or at all with most of these so it doesn't really bother me at all.
@Silly_G
That much is obvious, but what I mean is it would be nice to know what each game on a per-title basis loses as a result of the online services being shuttered.
I suppose they had to make the difficult choice between paying for the electricity for old servers or for NFT minting, with all the rising energy costs. Poor Ubisoft must be struggling financially after giving the players power over their video game assets.
Note: sarcasm
Rainbow six for GameCube had online?!?!
The only sad one is Just Dance 2018 which released only 4 years ago. But I doubt many are playing that on the Wii anyways
@RubyCarbuncle : You're a little ahead of me chronologically, but my first computer was a 286 with only MS-DOS on it. It was quite outdated even for its time too (circa 1993), but even at the age of four(ish), I was able to find my way around its text-only interface.
I remember the first shareware floppy disk we bought had five games on it, including Billy the Kid Returns (which I found mildly distressing), Star Goose, Fairy Godmother, Llamatron, and a Mario Bros. clone. Commander Keen 5 followed a short time later (which was erroneously sold as shareware), and it remains my favourite game in the series, and one of my favourite games of all time nearly three decades on.
Watch Dogs Companion app has been gone for some time now
anyway they need to port Watch Dogs 1 to Switch and have everything that the Wii U version was missing in it
I’m surprised that Raven Shield still had online play since the older Rainbox Six titles relied on Gamespy.
@Silly_G Sheesh reading your response makes me miss those times yet at the same time I can appreciate just how far things have come.
@RubyCarbuncle : I feel like only technology has improved while virtually everything else (mostly intangible in nature) has been a downgrade. Things were hardly perfect then, sure, but by God we were happier.
I’ve been meaning to get into Blacklist on Wii U. But I’ve been holding it off for a year. I did recently get the Your Shape 2013 ULC though, so rest assured, I got something here to salvage
Might & Magic Duel of Champions
This game has been off for over 5 years I think. I love this game, I played it a lot on Steam. I have no idea why they suddenly disappeared with the game.
Wow, really glad they are not shutting down Splinter Cell: Blacklist multiplayer on 360. The spies vs. mercs gameplay is so much fun. I hope it make a comeback someday!
@HefHughner This makes no sense. Haze had been disabled a few years ago (2014). I tried to connect to the multiplayer sometime in 2016,but it didn't work.
The closure is mentioned in 2014 here: https://forum.psnprofiles.com/topic/18348-ubisoft-server-shutdowns-coming-august-8/
This article is more about how impressive it is they kept these servers going.
I got a couple of these games on PS3.
Ubisoft kept a 17-year old game server that long?! That's some dedication right there!
I was afraid Watch_Dogs 1 would be on this list. I know it's not over 10 years old but still. Never know what these companies are thinking these days.
Weird seeing them discontinue online support for OnLive games, especially since the service hasn't been operational since 2015.
Wait, Settlers 3? That was released in 1998? I used to play it online (badly) as a kid. The servers are still online 24 years later? Amazing
@Silly_G Definitely agree there. You went outside more and all sorts, whereas today we spend a lot of our time in Cyber Space.
Now that these games have gone offline only, I literally have nothing to live for.
It’s a shame this happens and really makes me think about the longevity of games that focus so much on the online aspect. It’s sad to think certain content and functionality is lost forever like this.
Marvel Avengers: Battle for Earth - Wow i think i owned this game at one point. I remember the cover well, but not at all the gameplay... perhaps i have blocked it from memory? It looks ok when i youtube it though
