Re: Random: Poor Junichi Masuda Can't Even Enjoy His Birthday Without Someone Moaning About Missing Pokémon

NCChris

I'm sorry, I want to feel bad for Masuda and Gamefreak but at this point I couldn't care less.
They have taken the main series Pokemon games and used them as a way to rake in the money while cutting as many corners as possible while shoe-horning in lame gimmicks that people never wanted.
They lied about reusing models and lied about these high quality animations, as someone that has been with the series since gen 3 and supported it with my hard earned cash, it disgusts me that Gamefreak finds it acceptable to treat us this way.
Would I be doing what this guy is doing on Twitter? No because at this point it's been done to death but at the same time, I'd be lying if I said they didn't deserve it.

Re: Sakurai Discusses "Drawing Light, Not Objects" In Final Famitsu Column of 2019

NCChris

@Pod "It's always difficult to tell where he is"
So, if we are on battlefield, a stage that has a full white backdrop complete with a sky, you'd still have trouble telling where he is?
I've played this game since release and I've always been able to tell where Ridley is and what move he is doing, even on 4-player matches.
In addition, if this was a genuine issue, wouldn't Ridley be on the top-tiers in competitive play? Being able to hide what moves you are doing due to your design would actually be a very powerful tool in Smash Bros Competitive. As things stand right now, Ridley is actually deemed as 1 of the low-mid tier characters.
Again, I can respect the opinion that you do not like Ridley's design but these reasons feel very far-fetched.

Re: Sakurai Discusses "Drawing Light, Not Objects" In Final Famitsu Column of 2019

NCChris

@Pod Okay, to be fair, I do agree on the part about Ridley being too bright in certain areas but for everything else, I just think he looks good. I don't have a problem with him being mostly 1 colour as purple is 1 of my favourite colours and as Pat said, he's supposed to be a form of a monstrosity because obviously he's designed to be very menacing.
And yeah, of course he's not going to look identical to his original appearance, the original was just a sprite while this is a full 3D Model made for HD Screens, of course there's going to be changes along the way, doesn't mean Sakurai is lying when he says Ridley was based off of his original appearance.
As for the "Poses hard to read"? I'm gonna be honest here, I have absolutely no idea what this means. If you're referring to how he looks when he does specific animations, I don't see the issue.

As for Bowser; This again falls down to personal preference but I actually think he looks better in this game. In Smash Bros 4 certain characters came off as too cartoony and Bowser was 1 of the biggest victims of this issue. By making him look this way, he looks a lot more menacing and villainous. He's an evil turtle that lives in a lava filled land, the whole cartoon look just didn't work for him.

Re: Sakurai Discusses "Drawing Light, Not Objects" In Final Famitsu Column of 2019

NCChris

@Pod Okay, I can respect you simply not liking the SSBU Design for Ridley but at the same time I fail to see how this is the worst version of him. Ridley in Smash Bros Ultimate is based off of the original design from Metroid 1 on the NES, I think that aspect alone makes him 100% Ridley and Sakurai absolutely nailed how that would look in modern times.
You also got to remember that Ridley had to be modified a lot to even be playable. If you took the giant Ridley from the Metroid games, well I think at this point you know how badly that would go. If you ask me; considering the limitations Sakurai had to work with, I think the development team did a fantastic job making him playable while also making it feel like you was playing as Ridley.

I also do not get your "Designs are worse in SSBU" argument. SSBU literally uses the models from SSB4 that were in that game. I know later on you brought up how "They are presented worse" but designs and how well something is presented are not the same thing.

Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Awarded Best Fighting Game Of 2019

NCChris

@LUIGITORNADO @Joe-b
No, what he's referring to is the original Smash Bros. Sakurai and Iwata worked on the game together but when they initially presented it to Miyamoto, he shot it down.
However, Iwata and Sakurai didn't give up and once the prototype was finished, they presented it to Miyamoto and he finally approved it.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo May Have Caught The Pokémon Sword And Shield Leaker

NCChris

@Razzy I'm not a lawyer so anything I say here could be wrong but I believe Nintendo do have the right to prosecute the leaker for breaking the laws of embargos.
I think it all boils down to how they obtained the game, if the leaker was given a game review, they can absolutely be prosecuted for breaking their agreement but if this was another street date being broken by a retailer, I don't think they can prosecute the leaker but rather the store they got it from.

Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Becomes The Best-Selling Entry In The Series

NCChris

Uhm..this has been a thing for a while now? Event Hubs reported on this way back when it hit 12 million.
And for the record; I think it's unfair to roll Smash Bros 4 into 1 full game. That version had 2 copies and 1 of them was on the very popular Nintendo 3DS and even the Nintendo Wii U actually pulled in a lot of effort there so to roll them into 1 isn't really fair to the games that only had 1 game on 1 console. Heck, Sakurai himself even considers them separate games.

Re: There's "No Way" Future Smash Bros. Games Will Have As Many Fighters As Ultimate, Says Sakurai

NCChris

@Chunkboi79 SSBM is fine for 1 more re-release because unlike Street Fighter 2 and Skyrim, that game has never seen any form of a re-release. Heck, they could re-release SSBM at least twice and people would still be happy with it.
Another thing to consider is SSBU technically had a lucky break, with the exception of Smash Bros 64 to Smash Bros Melee, there has always been a break between developments of a Smash Bros game.
But with SSBU, they literally jumped straight from SSB4 to SSBU, why is this important? Because it meant the models could still be reused and it meant the team could be kept around.
Since the team that worked on SSB4 moved straight to SSBU, they already had 1 hell of a foot in the door as it meant they wouldn't have to worry about pulling a new team together.
As for the models, a lot is reused and that's a really smart move, reusing models drastically cuts down on the work needed. Sure it's still a lot of hard work but it's nowhere close as much as starting from scratch.
But when the next Smash Bros comes, it's likely that not only will the team be different but the models may no longer meet the standard Sakurai or Nintendo wants. Combine that with what I said about renewing the copyrights and it becomes very unlikely that the next Smash Bros will be able to top SSBU.
This is why I believe, unless they follow your idea of always porting SSBU, that Smash Bros should close it's doors. With the peak this game has hit, I think it's ran it's course as best it can and anything they try after will simply not compare.

Re: There's "No Way" Future Smash Bros. Games Will Have As Many Fighters As Ultimate, Says Sakurai

NCChris

@Chunkboi79 While I am down for that, it's not that simple. Unless Nintendo outright buys the 3rd Party content that's in SSBU, those copyright agreements are going to eventually expire and there's no promise Nintendo will be able to renew all of them.
Plus, history has shown that re-releasing the same game over and over again is not a good idea. Nowadays, whenever games like Skyrim or Street Fighter 2 get announced for a newer system, most people's reaction is "Oh my gosh! Another port!? Give it a rest already!".
On top of that, while this wouldn't be an issue right now, eventually SSBU just won't hold up graphically when compared to other titles on a future system and buyers won't see it being worth the purchase, especially since Nintendo loves to charge full price for games that came out years ago.

Re: There's "No Way" Future Smash Bros. Games Will Have As Many Fighters As Ultimate, Says Sakurai

NCChris

This is why I think Smash Bros needs to end. When you run a franchise of this particular fashion for this long, eventually it's legacy starts to work against it because there's always going to be that 1 game that players will deem superior to the newer ones.
Sure, some franchises like Mario, Zelda, and Metroid don't get caught up in this problem because in those games you take the role of only 1 or 2 characters and the world the game is built around is 100% fresh with new ideas.
Take a look at Super Mario Odyssey, that game clearly doesn't have much from past Mario games but that's fine because it was never meant to be.
Smash Bros, on the other hand, is a game built around playing as multiple characters and because of that, rather than the "world" being the focus, the focus is on who you play as and eventually, the roster is going to get so large that it becomes borderline impossible to make anything superior in terms of who you can play as. On top of that, Smash Bros Ultimate doesn't only have a massive roster, it has a dream roster! We got Cloud, Banjo Kazooie, Sonic, Snake, Simon Belmont, and so on.
Not only is the character count ridiculous, so is many of the actual fighters you can select! And we're not even done yet!
Let Smash Bros end on a super high note, that's what I say.

Re: We've Re-Translated That Pokémon Sword and Shield Interview Quote

NCChris

At this point, Gamefreak have caught themselves in a no-win situation. If they are not lying and they are indeed making new models from scratch, they are morons because the 3DS Models can easily be upscaled to HD as proven by Pokemon Let's Go.
If they are reusing models then they are just liars trying to deceive their supporters.

Re: We've Re-Translated That Pokémon Sword and Shield Interview Quote

NCChris

@nintendoknife I'm sorry but that's simply not true. I have the models from the 3DS Pokemon games on my PC and while there is a noticeable rise in quality, they are not on the same level as on the Nintendo Switch. Even the models in Pokemon Let's Go had to have their textures improved because doing nothing with them would have made the Pokemon look terrible in comparison to everything else.

Re: Game Freak Isn't Reusing 3DS Models In Pokémon Sword and Shield

NCChris

That....makes absolutely no sense. Pokemon Let's Go straight up reuses the 3DS models and they look and play fine! If Pokemon Sword and Shield was going into a new genre like say Action-RPG or full on Action-Adventure then yeah, a need for new models would make sense but Pokemon S+S is still turn-based RPG! There is absolutely no reason to use new models when it's evident that the 3DS models are more than enough when paired with better textures!
Oh, I can't wait for these games to come out and then people rip the models, then we will know for sure if they are lying or not.

Re: Is Game Freak "Recycling" 3DS Animations In Pokémon Sword And Shield On Switch?

NCChris

@westman98 Creatures Inc isn't to blame here because Masuda has straight up said that it was him that decided on "Quality" instead of "Quantity" so whatever Masuda has decided on creatures Inc have to follow with.
And yes, I know why Gamefreak makes side projects, but given the fact that you have 1 of the most anticipated titles of 2019, not to mention is a new console Pokemon game that we have not had in forever, you would think Gamefreak would be giving their all into this instead of focusing on stuff that's far less important.
Personally, I disagree on the lazy argument, Gamefreak aren't being lazy, they are just diverting their efforts in the wrong directions.

Re: Is Game Freak "Recycling" 3DS Animations In Pokémon Sword And Shield On Switch?

NCChris

@westman98 I admit I made a mistake with the money combined comment, no idea why I thought that, but even with that, Gamefreak is still expendable and is no longer mandatory from Nintendo's perspective.
Yes, Gamefreak has worked on side projects in the past, but the difference between now and then is now they are deliberately trying to create an IP that they can fall back on. Beforehand it was just something they did on the side because they knew Pokemon would remain their strong safety net.
There's even evidence to support this; In the past 5 years, Gamefreak have worked on 5 projects that are nothing to do with Pokemon and as a rather nice co-incidence, this started around the time Pokemon X and Y came out which just happened to be a point where fans started criticizing Gamefreak for drop in quality in Pokemon games.
There was even an interview where a Gamefreak employee straight up admitted that their primary team is NOT working on Pokemon and instead is focusing on non-Pokemon projects.
With the increase of new projects as well as their primary team not being focused on Pokemon, it's obvious they've become aware how expendable they've become.
Gamefreak isn't needed for Pokemon, Nintendo could replace them in a heartbeat and considering the way things are headed, they may not be around for much longer.

Re: Is Game Freak "Recycling" 3DS Animations In Pokémon Sword And Shield On Switch?

NCChris

@companyoflosers Unfortunately, that's far from the truth. Gamefreak at this point is expendable, Pokemon Go alone generated more money than the entire main series games combined and when combined with the money Nintendo gets from spin-offs, merchandising, and the anime, they could very easily replace Gamefreak with someone new.
This is why Gamefreak is working on "Town", they are aware how expendable they are becoming and want to create something new that they can fall back on should it happen. Ironically, Town could end up being their undoing because it's obvious them splitting their teams apart has caused Pokemon Sword and Shield to suffer and as a result, people will likely point fingers to "Town" and deliberately not buy it out of principle.

Re: Is Game Freak "Recycling" 3DS Animations In Pokémon Sword And Shield On Switch?

NCChris

@Bluerangervegeta I can't say for sure if that's the case but as someone that has the models for the Pokemon games on Nintendo 3DS, I can say they do look better in their organic form before the system downgrades them but would I say it's HD? Nah, compared to the likes of Pokken Tournament and even Smash Bros Ultimate, they're nothing special.
As for whether or not those "HD Textures" really exist, I can't really say but if they do, Gamefreak are even dumber than I thought but I don't see why they would make those textures at that point in time, especially since they already would have their hands full working on what was new for Pokemon X and Y.

Re: Is Game Freak "Recycling" 3DS Animations In Pokémon Sword And Shield On Switch?

NCChris

See, this is what really ticks me off about them cutting Pokemon. If they were re-designing all models from the ground up to make them more visually appealing along with brand new animations, I would be a lot more forgiving on them removing Pokemon but they are very clearly re-using models and the animations.
The only work that is needed is the textures would need improving as using the 3DS Textures on a HD Console would really hurt the games presentation.
Yeah I get it, there's a lot of Pokemon especially when counting all the forms as well, but surely a 90 Billion Dollar Franchise could afford to hire a team to fix them right up.

Re: You Cannot Have A Complete National Pokédex In Pokémon Sword And Shield

NCChris

@CosmoXY Yeah see, that's the difference between us, I play Pokemon solely for the metagame. The story and regional is all just secondary to me. If it wasn't for the online, anytime I finish a Pokemon game, I would likely just shelve it and wait for the next game, it's what I did before gen 4 after all.
When it comes to Pokemon, the battling is what I am there for, if I wanted a game with an in-depth story and a decently sized world, I'd go play something like Final Fantasy or Zelda.
There's no way I am paying £49.99 for a game that literally strips down what made it good for me in the first place and all that is left is what I never cared much for to begin with.

Re: You Cannot Have A Complete National Pokédex In Pokémon Sword And Shield

NCChris

@CosmoXY It's so easy to just say "simply because the full Pokédex won’t be included" and make it look so insignificant.
Let me explain something; I play Pokemon for the competitive metagame and 1 of the main reasons I play it is because of the massive roster is known for. It's so much fun playing in different tier levels because you get to see so many different takes on what players do to build their teams.
Is the roster unbalanced? Hell yeah, I ain't gonna pretend it isn't but we never expected Pokemon to be properly balanced, that's the con of having a massive roster, you're always going to have that but we were willing to accept that so long as we had the full roster.
With this, combined with the fact that Mega Evolution and Z-Moves are gone, the metagame is gonna take a massive hit and will likely only be a shell of what it used to be.
This is why I'm sticking with Pokemon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, while I admit they were lacking in new content, at least there I can still use all the Pokemon, something I cannot say for Gen 8.

Gamefreak has no excuse here, they have the models, they definitely have the funds, and they have the workers.

Re: Pokémon's Junichi Masuda Explains The Decision To Limit Sword And Shield's Pokédex

NCChris

Honestly, the division caused by this is bigger than I imagined. On the 1 hand I can understand people still being excited for this game but on the other, this feels like such a kick to the teeth.
I just wish people would stop hurling insults and slander to the other side, if people still want to buy these games then let them, it's up to them whether or not they buy the game and they shouldn't be belittled for it.
The same goes for the people not buying the game, that's their decision.

Re: You Cannot Have A Complete National Pokédex In Pokémon Sword And Shield

NCChris

Yep, the minute I heard about this along with the fact Z-Moves and Mega Evolutions are completely cut, I knew I was no longer buying these games.
What makes this worse is Gamefreak literally has no excuse for this, the models they are using have been the same since Pokemon X and Y which already have all their animations made! All that would be needed is improving the textures like they did with Pokemon Lets Go.
On top of that, there's no way in hell they can claim they don't have the money for extended development, Pokemon makes more money than any other form of entertainment, they absolutely definitely can afford more time for development, especially since they are still doing the "2 versions of 1 game" practise.
I'm done with Pokemon, it was bad enough Pokemon Ultra Filler was lacking in content and the entirety of Pokemon Let's Go that I frankly didn't want but this is the end for me, thank God Nintendo has tons of other stuff for me to sink my teeth into.
