A match-fixing scandal has reportedly rocked the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate competitive scene in North America. Zack Lauth, a player who goes by the name "CaptainZack" in the professional fighting scene, revealed on Twitter he has been barred from entering the upcoming Super Smash Con tournament, which begins in Virginia in a few days time.
This ban was placed on Lauth after he released a statement via Twitlonger, where he said he had grown frustrated with his poor performance at competitive events and decided to blackmail a now-former pro player by the name of Elliott "Ally" Carroza-Oyarce. He instructed the player to lose against various high-profile opponents in a number of big competitions. Carroza-Oyarce also happened to be in a relationship with Lauth (who was underage at the time) and retired from the Smash scene after he received a lifetime ban.
In his statement on Twitlonger, Lauth said:
I vow to never try to manipulate a match result again
A Smash Con representative further explained the situation to Polygon:
Based on information provided by Zack on Twitter, the tournament staff at Super Smash Con felt it was inappropriate to allow Zack to compete in our event. Attempting to fix the outcome of a match is strictly forbidden in our rulebook and those were grounds used to make this decision.
Since publishing these tweets, Lauth has been dropped by his sponsor Polar Ace Esports for "blackmail, match fixing, and irresponsible behavior" and has come under fire from the wider Smash Bros. community for compromising the integrity of large-scale competitions.

I never could watch video game competitions for much more than few minutes before becoming bored. Watching them reminds me of my 6 year old niece who will watch hours upon hours of others playing video games and playing with toys on youtube if allowed.
Something-something smash bros players...
2GG also permanently banned Zack from all of their events.
There's always someone who tries to cheat. The bigger the competition, the harder they try.
It's that selfish mentality of "I don't care who I screw over, I just want what I want". People like this disgrace not only the Smash community, but gamers in general.
@PBandSmelly What about sonic?
You should never admit it until you retire.
@PBandSmelly what's wrong with SonicFox?
Wow. There were so many wrong things he was doing on so many levels.
With the wider recognition eSports gets, the more problems like this will crop up. Every other sport has problems so why not Smash? Next we’ll have pro gamers with jacked up biceps and a literal trigger finger.
This is why it is never a good idea to cheat in video game tournaments. You'd get caught easily and punished just as fast.
Don’t cheat in Esport tournaments folks.
I'm virtually pissed off and e-fighting mad!
@BacklogBlues You’re not alone. I try to watch some, but I can’t get into it much.
And I feel ya on those YouTube vids. My friend’s daughter likes the ones where slime is made out of stuff.
@PBandSmelly what did sonic fox do?
@BacklogBlues cool story bro
Dude, do that in a sport and you get sent to jail! (Assuming the country in question has sporting integrity, of course.)
Does every pro smash player have skeletons in their closet? They're really giving that particular fighting game scene a bad name.
"Underage gay smash player blackmails his overage pedo partner to vent frustrations over frequent tournament losses."
Welp... that's one scandal I didn't think I'd see, that's for sure...
What is this world coming to?😂
Inflate-gate all over again!!! 😂
@Torakaka Yea but he only got caught because he admitted it online.
If only I had a PS4 to destroy.
Why do so many people do dumb things like this and never stop to consider that maybe, just maybe, it might ruin your career?
@DABYX Actually, an anonymous twitter user going by SmashBrosTruth announced they were going to soon break news about Zack by posting a video clip from one of the matches he blackmailed Ally to throw. Soon after this picture was posted, Zack confessed to the matchfixing before the anonymous account could follow up on that threat.
While it's unknown who exactly the anonymous account was owned by (and the account was deleted), evidence suggests it was the blackmail recipient, Ally, posting anonymously to avoid the lack of credibility he now has.
wonder what Zack will do now?
who ever that is.
anyways sometimes it can be hard to control your anger for some ppl.
Ban him for life.
I really don’t care about the competitive scene but that’s a big deal when money is involved .
He should be banned period, not from just one event.
@PBandSmelly so...nothing?
I think everyone involved with Smash Bros competitions should be incarcerated
what a rollercoaster of phrases. UNDERAGE dating too? what a mess
@somebread So... you can't read
Good old competitive Smash, it never fails to amuse
"I vow to never try to manipulate a match result again"
Is that because no one will let you compete again?
Funny seeing people use this topic to state that they can’t get into watching eSports. Yes, and?
If it’s not for you, move on. You just make yourself sound super old, like when your parents referred to your music as ‘just a lot of noise’. We get it, you’ve been around for a bit. It’s really impressive that you’ve lived longer than some other people and don’t understand what they young ‘uns are into these days. Thanks for for telling us. What do you think of skateboards?
Back on topic, there are a number of disturbing details in this report. That the cheat tried to justify it due to ‘frustration’ at his level of performance sounds super hollow and I imagine something more nefarious and/or petty was the real reason.
@somebread Sure, as long as kicking people because you don't agree with them is socially acceptable. People tend to frown at that one you pass being two years old.
Wow, this just keeps getting better and better.
@WrongChops
You are painting with a really broad brush. Any more ageist tropes you want to add?
Some people don't like what I like so that means there's something wrong with them, like they're old! Ah, that's a great insult, yeah, I'll run with that one!
Smh.
@PBandSmelly Source.
@WrongChops wait til the next Fortnite article!
@k8sMum it’s not that they don’t like what I like,it’s that they’re complaining about what “the kids are into” like a grandma complaining about the gosh darn rap music.
@WrongChops don't think age has anything to do with enjoying esports, I'm 38 and still enjoy watching esports. It's more about personal preferences.
@WrongChops
No need to take it personal, I’m not old and I think it’s pretty lame watching someone play a game when you can actually play the game yourself.
You make yourself sound super young and immature.
Oh and I hate skateboards!
@DESTROYA so you don’t watch any sports at all? I can play Smash Bros, Street Fighter etc. but not in the same universe as these guys. I like watching people play at an elite level, on the world stage, in front of thousands. Like any other sport. If it were the same playing yourself, no spectator sports would exist.
For everyone thinking I’m being ageist, I was being extreme to make a point. I’ve been playing games for over 30 years. I don’t understand lots of things ‘the kids’ are into, but I don’t go out of my way to proclaim it when it’s barely relevant to the topic.
@k8sMum way to miss the point. They literally said that their kids watch videos and they don’t understand the appeal. I too would probably be considered an ‘elder statesmen’ in gaming circles. I like eSports. I don’t like a lot of things about modern gaming. Do I go out of my way to tell people that? Nope. That’s the point I was making. There’s always generational resistance to change and it’s as dull as it is predictable.
Apologies if I touched a nerve. It just annoys when people go out of their way just to say something isn’t for them.
@Heavyarms55 Pretty much why I only play games for fun and not for competition. Also pretty much why I play solo and not with other people.
@WrongChops
Thank you for a well-considered response.
I am not a fan of e-sports, or any sports other than hockey. Like you, I don't make a point of posting just to say I don't like an activity. I guess my point is that I've never cared for most sports, not just because I'm now older.
You are right: many are resistant to change. Just like each generation feels they were the first to discover sex, drugs and rock n roll, the previous generation feels threatened by changes they don't 'get'.
It did hit a nerve because I see ageism as yet another way to divide and conquor in a society that is becoming more and more tribalistic.I
Apologies for over reacting.
@rxchrisg
I'm a grandma. I don't like rap. But I have the self awareness to realize I'm not the targeted demographic. But there is a ton of new music that I like and listen to. Openness to new experiences is a good thing, as is introducing older stuff to those younger.
Peace to both of you.
Who Cares? Zack Lauth Guy is nothing but a loser..You cheat you pay the price..Glad he got barred
@PBandSmelly I'm just saying, a bad retweet and being an idiot is not quite on the same tier as match rigging and blackmail.
I’m sorry but I just hope he isn’t banned for life, I think that’s too harsh. Everyone makes mistakes and I truly believe everyone deserves a chance at redemption. He’s just a kid, I know I did some seriously messed up stuff when I was that age. He def needs to be banned for at least a couple years to defer this type of thing from happening again.
@PBandSmelly Wait, SonicFox? What did he do?
@WrongChops
I just think you take comments on the internet/gaming site to seriously and personal, so you don’t like the fact that somebody doesn’t like what you like, no big deal. Move on.
@DESTROYA thanks for reinforcing the point I was initially trying to make. If people don’t like what you like. Move on. If I turn up on another thread just to say that I don’t understand why people enjoy what is being discussed, feel free to call me a hypocrite.
As for me taking this personally and seriously, I was merely pointing out the flaws in your argument. That’s fun for me 😊
Nothing serious about it hombre.
The relationship with a minor is only a foot note in this article. Bribery and blackmail are front and center.
Forget being banned from Smash and losing sponsorship. This person should be arrested. Blackmail is illegal
@WrongChops
It’s all good brother.
I knew the salt was real but damn, fixing matches now because we didn't like previous outcomes? I guess "eSports Entertainment" is next...
