Nintendo's all-star brawler Super Smash Bros. Ultimate might not have taken out GOTY at this year's Game Awards, but it's at least picked up the best fighting game award.
Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America's president, took to the stage to receive this award on behalf of Nintendo and thanked Masahiro Sakurai and his team for their hard work and dedication:
To win this award, Smash Bros. Ultimate had to beat Dead or Alive 6, Jump Force, Mortal Kombat 11 and Samurai Shodown. Certainly not the easiest of opponents, and all of them with a rich fighting history.
This was the last we heard of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the night, with Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice taking out the GOTY award and Luigi's Mansion 3 beating Smash in the best family game category.

This one’s a no-brainer. One of the very best games ever made IMO.
That's fair, it's the most fun fighting game of all time.
It was Iwata's last request from Sakurai, and you can tell Sakurai poured his all into making it. Iwata pushed Sakurai to make Smash Brothers against the will of Miyamoto who disapproved of it, but sadly he could not live to see this entry finished
Congrats to Smash Bros. As much as I liked Samurai Shodown and Dead or Alive 6 despite its flaws, Smash Bros was a no brainer.
How does a fighting game from 2018 win an award in 2019?
Not slamming Smash Ultimate, but this pretty much ignores all the great fighting games that released this year.
It should have only been between fighters that released in 2019.
@Caryslan The Game Awards last year happened a few days before the game was even released.
@Caryslan
Think it has to do with the fact that games that release in december of the current year can't be nominated for that year. Same with any games that were released this december as none of them are nominated for the 2019 awards
@Obito_Sigma actually the day before, which was hilarious!
Anybody know what happened to the Live stream on the front page? I got out and I can't find it again. 😢
Good, now no one can't say Super Smash Bros. isn't a fighting game series.
Well Deserved!!! It’s an excellent game!
I wonder where the “Smash is not a fighting game” critics are.
Was there any doubt? I mean... Jump Force?
@patbacknitro18 Miyamoto didn't want Ultimate made?
@Severian best comment ever... I wonder the same thing!
@LUIGITORNADO I guess not. I wonder if the same goes for Pikmin 4...sorry, just a bit upset we've had no info on the 4th installment of Pikmin....
@Caryslan The reason is simple; Smash Bros Ultimate came out AFTER the Game Awards of last year.
It would be very unfair to not let it in just because it happened to be released in that particular time frame.
@LUIGITORNADO @Joe-b
No, what he's referring to is the original Smash Bros. Sakurai and Iwata worked on the game together but when they initially presented it to Miyamoto, he shot it down.
However, Iwata and Sakurai didn't give up and once the prototype was finished, they presented it to Miyamoto and he finally approved it.
@Caryslan no that is not the argument here, if anything the argument is why was Jump Force considered when many other(not that many but there were others) came out this year and just because they weren't front page news doesn't mean Jump Force gets to "Jump" in line.
@Caryslan also you and other people who keep saying that mess please give it up it literally came out the DAY after the game awards 2018#Give it Up
@retro_player_22
Smash bros is a platformer, change my mind.
Well to me the best stages are the musics.
This really isn't that surprising, given the competition it was up against. I honestly would have been shocked, if any other fighting game won this award.
