There have been a lot of key figures moving about in the Japanese video game industry in recent times, and the latest individual now making headlines is the art director of Jet Set Radio, Ryuta Ueda.
After spending nearly a decade at Yahoo! Japan, Ueda announced in a Facebook post how he returned to Sega in May this year.
“I have decided to resign from Yahoo Japan and return to my old company, Sega... I am very grateful for the many people I met and the many lessons I learned through various projects at Yahoo!
“From now on, I will focus on making games again. Not only do I feel the excitement of making things, but I am also smiling a little at the thought of seeing old friends and meeting new people. I would like to fully demonstrate what I have cultivated through experience.”
This follows on from the recent news about Yakuza and Super Monkey Ball creator Toshihiro Nagoshi leaving Sega to go to the Chinese company NetEase. Interestingly Ueda was the director of the first two Yakuza games back in the day.
While Sega's embraced revivals of older series such as Super Monkey Ball, it seems like there's more of a chance of Ryuta Ueda joining the Yakuza team. With any luck though, we see some retro series make a return as well.
Have you played any of the games Ueda worked on? Would you like to see Jet Set Radio make a return? Tell us down below.

A JSR remaster being on Switch would be excellent. A new JSR game altogether would be fantastic. A new, exciting game / IP from Sega would be even better. Fingers crossed.
Sounds to me like Ryuta didn't get along with Nagoshi, and immediately seized the opportunity to return as soon as his nemesis left the house of Yakuza.
@noobish_hat ???
Jet Set Stereo confirmed for switch
JET SET RADIOOOOOOOOOOOOO
damn i love those games. jsrf was so amazing on the original xbox
Yakuza has changed a lot since the first two PS2 games. He'll definitely need to study up if he rejoins that team. If he does return to Yakuza I hope it's not a step back and that he does understand the current state of the series and the scope and style the games have adopted.
@noobish_hat Do I dare ask what on earth you're talking about on an article talking about an old employee returning??
Good, so i guess Sega and Yakuza won't go down the drain.
Also, it would be nice if Jet Set Radio Future would get a port/remaster.
Can't imagine a better person to be at SEGA for a new entry in Jet Set Radio or (dare I even dream) Panzer Dragoon!
Jet Set Radio & Future HD on Switch.
Sega are sitting on such a goldmine of IP it's criminal that we aren't getting more output from them.
Sonic
Streets of Rage
Golden Axe
Sega Rally
Dayona USA
Hang On
Outrun
Virtua Fighter
Fighting Vipers
Shining Force
Phantasy Star
Skies of Arcadia
Wonderboy
Afterburner
Crazy Taxi
Virtual On
Panzer Dragoon
Gunstar Heroes
Nights
Jet Set Radio
Space Harrier
House of the Dead
Virtua Cop
Some have been dormant longer than others and I know we've had release from external developers for a few of these franchises but Sega has poorly managed most of them.
Streets of Rage is pretty much the rare exception to the rule. I'd love to see them return to the heady days of the 90's where they ruled the home 'arcade' experience and they had some fantastic RPGs, such a shame.
I absolutely adored JSR back in the day. Still one of my most favourite art styles in any game to this day. It was a bitterly frustrating game as well, but it felt so special, I couldn't help but persevere. The music was a huge part of it, too.
@tatchy In case it's slipped by you, look forward to Bomb Rush Cyberfunk!
@GrailUK @Strife89 It's obviously a stretch. But this move did make wonder if it was in response to Bomb Rush Cyberfunk and maybe Sega is finally going to going to do something with the JSR IP
@UmbreonsPapa Indeed, we don't know what games they have in development but whatever happens, we hopefully see his artistic influence in their future releases (obviously not the immediate ones lol!)
Jet Set Radio graphics, cell shading!?
