I'll be grabbing this, it looks brilliant. After, of course, I get my fill of UFO 50, which will be taking up most of my precious gaming time for the foreseeable.
MONSTER TRAIN 2! Absolutely amazing game released this month, totally ignored by this site like the first game. I'd strongly encourage folk to check it out, particularly if you enjoyed Slay the Spire.
@Bondi_Surfer It's really disappointing - I was hoping for the same. I like that they're not fleecing everyone for roster updates but there's no proper manager mode with signings and stats, instead it looks very mobile gamey with cards and upgrades.
I really wanted a traditional manager mode where you sign players and it tracks stats (like goals). Instead we get this silly modern loot-boxy random card thing. Puts me right off, unfortunately.
@Wisps I get very bored by narrative in games. Light stuff (like Cobalt Core!) is fine but if I'm clicking A constantly to get through dialogue I switch off.
I see there's a Steam demo of Dungeon Drafters so I'll check it out!
Great article. The game has such personality and is so cleverly balanced. I've just completed it (got the final story segment) and I've loved every minute of it.
@Wisps I've tried 1) and 2) but have never heard of Dungeon Drafters. Is it worth a look for someone that is impatient with story/RPG elements?
I've been playing Cobalt Core non-stop since its release this month. It's had no attention from this site but lots of YouTubers have picked it up. It's a unique roguelike deckbuilder with real character.
@ButterCashier Using "we" is a common journalistic device to convey a team effort, or to express the viewpoint of a publication, or to maintain journalistic objectivity (so that a journalist can avoid inserting themselves into an article).
All that effort and they spelled "isle" wrong (assuming they meant an island or peninsula, and not a passage between rows of seats in a building such as a church or theatre, an aircraft, or train).
@Neckcrane @BenAV agree re: WildFrost, and shocking lack of coverage on this site. The game has been a real breath of fresh air, and the initial "it's too hard" reviews were harsh - once the mechanics click it's up there with Spire and Train for sure.
Been following this game for some time and I can't wait. The Steam demo was excellent - some really interesting mechanics and combos, lovely art and music and theme, and a tonne of depth. There's a lot of excitement in the game's Discord for the release; I think this game is going to be a lot of fun.
I played a demo of Wildfrost on Steam (coming soon to Switch) and it gave just the right amount of content to leave me longing for more. Best Switch demo I played was Invisigun Reloaded. Introduced the gameplay mechanics, gave a taste of a few modes and levels and showed plenty of tantalising locked away stuff. I had to immediately go and download the full game.
That text looks way too small for me. Happens a lot on these kinds of games, especially those ported from PC. I wanted to grab Roguebook but same problem - it's no fun if I'm squinting the whole time.
Some of the comments on here are so sweet. This isn't to do with "morals" and "integrity" it's to do with MONEY. Nintendo are my favourite company but they're still the same as any other big firm - decisions like this are driven by fear. They know full well the kind of hyper-sensitive, hysterical headlines a little game with "war" in the title could provoke. Then they have to dedicate precious resources and bandwidth to containing any reputational damage. It's cold-hearted risk management, nothing more.
@Alacazoom I tend to enjoy online gaming against mates, but less so against randoms. The latter often rage quit, or swear at me, or exploit some game breaking tactic. I know, it's not all the time...but I work full time and play games to relax, I generally don't need all that competitive sh*t. A single player element (yes, even in sports games) allows me to go at my own pace. I guess everyone's different!
@Itachi2099 yes that's what's holding me back. A league or season or tournaments or something. I won't get it if it's "online or nothing", which I fear is how a lot of games are turning out nowadays.
@CANOEberry this and Breach are my favourite games for similar reasons. You make decisions based on (near-) perfect information and you get to feel smart when it all comes together. Also (for me) they give you time to think - sometimes life gets a bit hectic and it's nice to pause and focus on some strategy for a while. Slay the Spire has been refined over the years and is very balanced; tough but fair.
@KateGray the Reddit group is brilliant for tips but the general one is: don't lean into an archetype too early (exhaust build, all block, poison). Choose cards based on what's coming up next- if you're lacking big attacks, get one. If you've got no AoE, think about that.
I adore this game. I've beaten A20 with the first three characters and I'm on A17 with Watcher. It's tough but you're in control of your destiny, a lot like my other favourite game, Into The Breach.
I went for space-themed deck builder "For The Warp". Hasn't had much attention but thought I'd take a punt. Fairly decent but a bit derivative, got bored pretty quickly. So got Dungeontop for £1.50 in the latest eShop sale and that's way better, really scratches that strategic itch.
I picked up Windjammers 2 and absolutely love it. Wish there was a bit more single player content though - even if it just saved your high scores in arcade mode!!
I tried the game last year and can see that it's expertly crafted and plays great, I just can't get very far into it. Maybe I just suck at games, but all this DLC for me isn't worth it as I'll still be starting in that same first area. Perhaps there are some accessibility options somewhere to allow me to progress further into the game.
@NintendoWife Wow I think I'm exactly the same, and agree with Luigi's Mansion as well. Both didn't quite click for me. I even get that with really highly rated games - I didn't get on with Dead Cells for some reason and Hollow Knight bored the hell out of me. Maybe I'm getting impatient as I get older!
@Gs69 Certainly seems logical to me. I love the base game - I even owned the Wii U one - but I'm greedy and it does seem like a no-brainer for Nintendo. An established user base (in the millions), a huge percentage of whom would likely pay the extra fiver (or whatever) for new tracks made in an existing game engine. I'm guessing it's not straightforward to "just" chuck in some new tracks, but a man can wish.
Never played Exotica but had World and USA and they were big dumb fun. Been playing Blast with my son - he's only 3 but brilliantly there's an "auto-accelerate" mode so he can feel like he's racing along!
@Warioware Monster Train is a strategy deck building game. That makes it sound very boring but it's a lot of fun particularly for gamers like me who are impatient. Worth a look; it didn't get much coverage on Nintendolife for some reason.
@Poodlestargenerica Monster Train plays like Slay the Spire if you've ever tried that. If you like that kind of thing it's fantastic value, worth a Google. No touchscreen controls as far as I'm aware tho
@Warioware sadly I agree entirely with you. I was really looking forward to the latest Warioware and played until I had unlocked everything and haven't felt compelled to go back. Core game is great but it is lacking...something.
I'm just going to be that guy and moan about a game missing from the list - Monster Train, which was released in August, is an unbelievably good game that I've spent a tonne of hours playing. Deffo top Switch release of 2021 for me.

Re: Soapbox: As A 'Slay The Spire' Addict, I Can't Believe I Almost Missed This 2023 Gem
@umbreon_sylveon I loved Wildfrost but I'd say Cobalt Core is closer mechanically to Spire.

Re: Mini Review: Potion Craft: Alchemist Simulator (Switch) - A Potent Brew, But An Unrefined Port
Performance issues, small text...no thanks. Big shame, I was interested. But these ports should really be refined for the target platform.
