Mario Golf: Super Rush has expanded and improved a fair amount since its launch, now representing a rather decent final product. Part of this renewed appeal is the online ranked play, which is still undeniably simplistic but does offer snappy fun and some rewards. Last month the big prize was Mario's normal clothing, which was both cool and underwhelming at once, but this month's reward is certainly worth a little time on the course.
The January prize is Mario's outfit from NES Open Tournament Golf, a rather iconic piece of attire that is often brought back to light in modern titles - in this generation it's been a costume in Super Mario Odyssey and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Its origins make it the perfect unlock, and some eager players have got it wrapped up already.
The system for earning the reward is definitely generous, so you won't need to spend too long playing to earn it (especially if spread out over a number of days). You only need to hit an A- ranking in one of the categories (normal or speed golf, buttons or motion controls), and with rounds only being three holes you can rattle off a number of points quickly. You don't even have to be a strong performer as such, with participation points enough to help you move up the ranks.
Let us know in the comments, as always, if you're planning to earn this outfit in Mario Golf: Super Rush; we'd argue it's the most tempting ranked reward yet.

Does anyone know if the outfits become available for players who never play ranked matches after some time?
@John_Deacon I was wondering this, is it a get it now or never deal; or can you get it later on? (Don’t own the game yet!)
@John_Deacon and @Grackler you cannot get past outfits right now. But for Mario Tennis they just rotated the unlocks after they were done so you can always get them at a later time, probably do the same with this but not sure.
Hope they keep this up until all the characters have a 2nd outfit. This is a great way to keep people coming back to the game, the start of every month online has so many people playing it because of this.
@Gasarakii That's exactly why I asked: they did that with Mario Tennis and I'm not an online player, so it'd be nice to get the outfits like I got the Mario Tennis ones
This game is so dead and burried !
They released it with so little content that two weeks later everyone was into something else...
Wonder if Luigi will have his outfit?
@Gasarakii And they did the same thing with the Tetris 99 skins that were tied to timed tournaments. I go after the golf outfits every month, but I would imagine they'll be available again at some point. I suspect it's a little bit of gentle FOMO to try to get people buying and playing the game now, rather than dropping it on the Wish List and forgetting about it.
@Tibob I borrowed it from a family member a few months ago. I have been enjoying it. If you like Mario Golf, definitely worth getting used or on sale.
Of all the Nintendo games I bought in recent years, this is the one that I can't bring myself to play. What is so boring about it? I loved Golf Story, so I do have a soft spot for old school golf game mechanics... Anybody else got the same problem?
Edit: There have been others, now that I think about it. Didn't finish Luigi's Mansion because it was merely 'okay', and Mario + Rabbids sadly wasn't for me either.
@NintendoWife Wow I think I'm exactly the same, and agree with Luigi's Mansion as well. Both didn't quite click for me. I even get that with really highly rated games - I didn't get on with Dead Cells for some reason and Hollow Knight bored the hell out of me. Maybe I'm getting impatient as I get older!
@Tibob Uh no plenty of people came back to the game especially with how much they added into the game on a regular basis
@Burning_Spear still waiting for another chance to get that Bowser's Fury skin. It's currently the only one I'm missing and it's bugging me lol.
It's to late for me. I gave up on the game months ago.
Drip feeding us parts of the game I'd already paid for, so that Nintendo could extend its marketing of the game seems to have back fired on them.
Your comment "now representing a rather decent final product" says it all. It should have been that a launch.
