Update [Wed 8th Jun, 2022 14:00 BST] We said keep your eyes open! We've shared our own Mario Strikers: Battle League review and, well, not to spoil anything, but we're big fans.
Original article [Wed 8th Jun, 2022 10:30 BST] We're just two days away from the release of Mario Strikers: Battle League, the first Mario Strikers game in 15 years! And we can't wait to get on the pitch, especially after getting a taste of the game's online this past weekend.
And it looks like we have every reason to be excited! The very first review of the game has just dropped and Japanese publication Famitsu is seemingly very positive about Next Level Games' return to the pitch. Using its typical four-person review system, the outlet has scored Mario Strikers: Battle League 32/40, with each reviewer giving the game an 8.
That's a pretty solid number, which should hopefully mean we're in for a treat this Friday. And given our own early impressions from when we managed to spend a bit of time with the game in May, we feel like this is going to be a good one.
Keep an eye out for our own thoughts on Mario Strikers: Battle League in the near future. In the meantime, share your thoughts on the demo and let us know how excited you are for the game in the comments!

That sounds fair. I was pleasantly surprised by the smoothness of online, and appreciated how the game continues even if a teammate drops off. That was a much needed feature.
2017’s Mario Sports Superstars on 3DS would like a word…
@gaga64 Good point! I think I'd blocked that one out... I've tweaked the wording
Famitsu Mario Golf: Super Rush. Four editors (NSW) - 8/8/8/9 That’s a total of 33 out of 40.
Famitsu Mario Tennis Aces (NSW) – 8/8/9/8
That’s a total of 33 out of 40
So strikers battle league at 32/40 is worse??????!!!!!! Noooooooooooooooo!!!!!
I'm looking forward to the game but that's a pretty bad score by Famitsu standards...
I feel like this game is gonna be absolutely barebones, all the adverstisements focus only on Online Battle Leagues.
Is there gonna be anything to do in this game besides playing online matches? Any single player content?
Mario Tennis Aces is brilliant but Mario Golf Rush was disapointing to me...looking forward to trying this one out even thought he controls were too diffcult for me in the demo (and I didn't like the violence!)
Has Famitsu ever awarded a score below 32?
@Itachi2099 I`m worried too, cause I am not into online that much. Wonder if it has some singleplayer season mode. I know it is a different kind of football game, but I would really want that.
Looking forward to reading more reviews on this game. I am worried the game will need a lot of post release updates before we get the "full package", just like with Mario Golf.
@Itachi2099 yes that's what's holding me back. A league or season or tournaments or something. I won't get it if it's "online or nothing", which I fear is how a lot of games are turning out nowadays.
@Itachi2099 @Milton_Burle I mean, a game like this is predestined for online, unless you regularly have 7 friends over to play a match. Who cares about the singleplayer of Mario Tennis, Golf or Soccer? It's all about multiplayer. And multiplayer is usually online. I wouldn't care if the game didn't have a singleplayer option at all. It's not Zelda. It's a competitive sports game. I don't want to play those against CPU - yawn.
@Alacazoom Because games are catered only to you.
There's still people who enjoy playing single player with these types of games, I've put countless hours into both of the previous entries and I assure you, most of it was single player.
And even then, there's no reason these types of single player things can't have (local or even online) multiplayer options as well. No reason a game can't have the best of both worlds.
Aces and Golf both scored 33 if memory serves me right, so 32 is in line. I think it comes down to your sporting preferences really. I'll wait for a sale in the holidays alongside knowing more about those DLC updates they've confirmed.
Ultimately, it's the fact Tennis and Golf both failed to click that I'm reluctant to risk being stung again.

@AlanaHagues to be fair, that wasn’t a dedicated football game, and didn’t exactly set the world alight with it’s preposterous amiibo card collection…
It’s pretty low for Famitsu’s standards. I think it’s because this game feels like a downgrade from the Wii game. Where are each character’s special moves? Where are the hazards in the stadiums? The demo was great but it felt lackluster and barebones. This is a step backwards in the franchise.
Looks like I’ll wait for a big sale… until then most of the significant updates will have rolled out. This generation’s Nintendo’s sport games feel like a cash grab.
That's the same score that Amiibo festival got lol.
Famitsu seems to have a habit of generously scoring titles. If Strikers only got a 32, that is not making me optimistic.
its leaked on www
As with the first two games, I highly doubt it will have that much to do in single player mode. That being said, this could still be a fun one to take online.
@Alacazoom Okay so having fun by yourself is completely pointless, duly noted. lmfao

@Alacazoom I play with others, locally and online, plenty enough. That doesn't mean I can't also enjoy multiplayer focused games on my own.
Maybe you should be the one to consult someone for your weird need to judge people you know nothing about on how they should be spending their time according to you.

Going skip this one just looks very lackluster and also disappointed in mario golf as well. They have been doing very poorly on the sport games.
@C-Olimar Well... Yeah. Famitsū gave Corpse Party: Blood Drive a score of 29/40. And Famitsū gave Baroque(PS2) a score of 27/40.
@Vyacheslav333
Did you really have to go that far back?
@Vyacheslav333 I was being flippant to be honest. I know they've given lower scores. It just seems very rare.
@C-Olimar O, okay...
@KindofaBigDeal Nope. Corpse Party: Blood Drive is not an old game. And it's available on Switch. Baroque(2007 remake) is an 2007 game for PS2, Wii, and iOS. That game is not old, imo.
Edit: Oh, and yeah - enhanced port of original(1998) Baroque is available on Switch. Only in Japan, and only on Japanese language, though.
Cant wait to play it
@Alacazoom I tend to enjoy online gaming against mates, but less so against randoms. The latter often rage quit, or swear at me, or exploit some game breaking tactic. I know, it's not all the time...but I work full time and play games to relax, I generally don't need all that competitive sh*t. A single player element (yes, even in sports games) allows me to go at my own pace. I guess everyone's different!
Since when did we take Famitsu scores seriously? Have you seen what they considered perfect scores? Lol
