Re: Soapbox: Why I Still Love the Wii U

Mario_Fart

Since I didn't own a Wii, I'll always fondly remember trawling the eShop and VC on Wii U for old gems I missed (looking at you, Eathbound, you scamp!). Plus, it brought me and my nieced closer together each xmas with Mario Kart 8. Frustrating account system really needs shaking up and My Nintendo doesnt fill me with hope that Nintendo will nake it easy.

Re: Analyst Firm Notes Hype For Switch, But Worries Nintendo Is "Not Prepared" To Take Advantage

Mario_Fart

I still haven't heard of one game that makes me want to buy a Switch (I already own a Wii U and 3DS) and this thing's coming out in March?

I don't love it when Sony hypes games 4 or 5 years ahead of release but they sold a bunch of systems because people knew games were coming for it eventually. Unless Nintendo have lots of surprises up their sleeves, this is feeling like non-business as usual. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Switch Release Date and Key Games Outlined

Mario_Fart

Man, that list looks TIRED. The same old franchises... ports from other systems... reboots... Just Dance... UGH.

Here's hoping the unannounced games are genuinely exciting and not just stripped down versions of PS4/Xbox games which are 6 months late to the table.

Am definitely getting a PS4 next. Between that and my Wii U and 3DS backlogs, Switch can wait until at least 2018.

Re: Here Are Your New My Nintendo Rewards

Mario_Fart

@Wolfgabe I think part of the problem is that they call it a 'rewards' program but actually it's just discounts (much like a digital storefront would offer) and they're generally terrible. Calling them rewards (which sound like a thank you for being a good customer) just set people up for disappointment... hence the irritation. Also, the whole system is so convoluted and confusing that most casual consumers have no idea how to use it or what the whole point is (other than try and drive Miitomo use). They're shooting themselves in the foot every time they announce new 'rewards'.

Sure, they don't technically owe us anything but thanking loyal customers with rewards isn't a new concept and they need to compete for our spending money in the face of stiff competition. Wii U only proves they need to try harder, not less.

Re: Reaction: Our Early Thoughts on the Nintendo Switch

Mario_Fart

On the fence. Switch isn't enough to stop me getting a PS4 next and the graphics don't seem incredibly different to my Wii U (yet) where I can still play Mario Kart etc. And I love the 3D of the 3DS so I might still upgrade to a New 3DS. Think I can easily wait a year or so and see how Switch does on the software and account system fronts first.

Re: Talking Point: The Problems With My Nintendo So Far, and Why All's Not Lost

Mario_Fart

These articles always make me want to go check out the PSN shop and see what discounts they have. I know I'm going to get more choice and the odd genuine bargain. It's like Nintendo keep driving me to spend money on their competition. It's also crazy that my PS3 must be 5 years old but I still have ample space to save games to and I don't think about it. Meanwhile, my Wii U has enough for half a Pikmin 3 game left and my AAA titles are all on disc.

Re: My Nintendo Adds More Rewards for Discounts in Europe

Mario_Fart

Every time I open one of these articles about My Nintendo my finger pauses and I think, "Why put yourself through this?" I must be a masochist. These announcements only dampen any enthusiasm I should have for NX. Sure, I might love the hardware and the odd title but Nintendo will still be a frustrating grinch on everything else.

Re: Talking Point: Unique and Affordable - Nintendo's NX Needs to Avoid Direct Competition With PlayStation and Xbox

Mario_Fart

@GizmoGadgets You raise an interesting point: fresh IPs. For all the genius they can often bring to new Mario or Zelda games, it feels like the well they draw from has become too narrow, no matter how willing they are to experiment with those franchises.

Wii U has been an interesting generation for Nintendo in that Miyamoto seemed to lose touch with Star Fox while the company's new blood hit a home run with Splatoon. I hope that encourages them to take more chances on new IPs. They need to stop preaching to the converted quite so much.

Re: Talking Point: Unique and Affordable - Nintendo's NX Needs to Avoid Direct Competition With PlayStation and Xbox

Mario_Fart

Does anyone get the sense that the old Xbox vs PS4 graphics war has calmed down recently? Xbox was getting gleefully destroyed by fanboys with every multi-plat comparison and maybe now Pro and Scorpio will start making that conversation a bit more redundant (I'm starting to see comments like "my OG PS4 is plenty good enough"). Have we peaked? Generational leaps are getting less and less perceptible and we're looking to VR and display technology for new ways of seeing. And some of the best gaming experiences these days are remasters or indies. Maybe we are finally ready for something 'good enough' in a way we weren't even 6 months ago. Or not.

Re: Talking Point: Unique and Affordable - Nintendo's NX Needs to Avoid Direct Competition With PlayStation and Xbox

Mario_Fart

@Dakt Agreed, up to a point. Except they've purposefully restructured so they don't find have to support 2 different systems at the same time with NX. Throw in some Japanese developers and a large enough indie base and - fingers crossed - they'll survive without those Western ports which get destroyed in the media for not having enough pixels.

I wonder if Western AAA developers even have the means any more to create bespoke games for a 3rd machine, game budgets being what they are now. If NX goes huge then maybe. But they know they can't rely on that anymore.

Re: Talking Point: Unique and Affordable - Nintendo's NX Needs to Avoid Direct Competition With PlayStation and Xbox

Mario_Fart

Do they really need to compete on graphics to carve out a big enough audience? Or can they produce enough compelling software now they've combined their portable and home console divisions? The gamers who are obsessed with comparing PS4 and XB1 graphics have surely bought in to those machines already. To lure that crowd (fanboys or the types that comment on Digital Foundry articles even though they can't really tell the difference themselves anymore) they'd need to match Scorpio... cost less than £250... with amazing battery life. Ain't possible.

Nintendo's audience will be all about the games. That launch lineup better be stellar. Great reviews on gaming sites is their only way to survive the graphics comparisons which will happen anyway.

Re: Talking Point: What Approach Should Nintendo Take With Its NX Reveal?

Mario_Fart

Ultimately, it may not matter (to me) how they announce the damn thing if the rumours turn out to be true. A phablet with detachable wii-like controllers? I dunno. I actually want a New 3DS more than anything rumoured so far so I'll just be relieved if it's something I actually want. I'd love for them to surprise everyone with a truly desirable device. Let's hope they've got that at least.

Re: My Nintendo Extends Validity Period for Gold Points

Mario_Fart

This made me curious to log in to My Nintendo and see what I've been missing since I stopped even bothering to look. Short answer: nothing. I've just spent 5 minutes staring at the screen thinking, "I must be missing something." Just awful!

Am I being rewarded here or punished for something? Feels like the latter, every time.

Agree with @JaxonH - just let me use my stupid coins on any eShop purchase.

Re: Feature: Ten Ideal Launch Year Nintendo NX Games

Mario_Fart

All very nice but talk about deja vu! Hopefully an indie developer can come to the rescue with something that grabs the wider gaming community's interest the way No Man's Sky has done. Relying on increasingly hoary old Nintendo franchises will only preach to the converted.
