Well, dry those eyes, as there is a Nintendo Direct coming this week that will focus on portable treats for the 3DS. It's going down on 1st September at 7am Pacific / 10am Eastern / 3pm UK / 4pm CET. Nintendo of Europe has done a nice tweet to accompany Nintendo of America's rather matter-of-fact press release and tweet.
As always we'll be hosting the stream, live blogging and covering the broadcast here on Nintendo Life; as there will be separate streams for Europe and North America we'll cover them separately, too.

Please surprise release of Hyrule Warriors Legends DLC straight after!
I vote for Picross 3D 2, some form of Mario game (asides from Star Rush, though that will feature, for sure), and a surprise to be featured in the direct. We'll probably also see more of Ever Oasis, and get an announcement for Yo-Kai Watch 2 (like a date or time frame for next year, at least in Europe).

Ever since E3 the lack of news almost made me forget about Nintendo Direct, then again it'll likely be updates on upcoming releases and DLC that will be released during Fall and perhaps a brand new game for the Winter season (nothing big, probably just a Mario or Pokemon spin-off).
Fingers crossed for Pokemon Gold/Silver on the Eshop.
Guessing maybe Dragon Quest 8 will be there too.
The EU version will probably feature Federation Force as it comes out a day later.
I assume its just going to be about how all resources are going towards Pokemon Go and everything else has been cancelled.

Yeah the first part of the article summed up my thoughts.
Personally I'm really not that excited about the Direct and I'm not expecting to hear much other than some indies, maybe one or two small eShop games and DLC with a news update on the final one or two retail games coming to the system that aren't Pokemon related.
@Daldra No. No it does not. If you're too cheap to pay for a 3DS at this rate, then that's just sad. It's an incredibly cheap system with a plethora of amazing games. The price they have for it currently is more than acceptable.

No nx then I don't care. I already retired my Wii u earlier this month. Its on the shelf unconnected with the GameCube, ps2 and ps3. I'll be setting up the ps2 soon for my yearly silent hill 1-4 fall runs and then the ps3 for costume quest 1&2. Fall games woo!
There's been talks of AC: New Leaf DLC so it will probably get mentioned. Hopefully one surprise reveal at least?

@Lucina I already have a 3DS. The $200 price has been there since the xl came out. Might as well make the 3DS sell more faster before it becomes irrelevant when the nx is announced. The wii u also seriously needs a price cut.
@Lucina I do agree with you about being worth it, however there are places where the price is still too high, for example here in Mexico. It doesn't need a global price cut though, just a better transition for some countries. I haven't been able to upgrade to a New 3DS because they don't do the price cut they offered to previous 3DS owners by giving their 3DS in exchange and buying a new model costs $4000 to $5000 pesos, which I would compare to paying $300 to 500 dollars for one in the USA.

The usual stuff like announcing new releases and localisations. Granted, Nintendo might stick to their own product line rather than delve into things like Etrian Odyssey 5 or even more Tales game ports from Namdai... what? A nerd can dream, although even getting one's hands on Tales of the Abyss in Europe is a challenge. Speaking of which, how about an eShop release? If games as bulky as Xenogears receive one..
And that in turn reminds me that hearing about more stuff announced for eShop (including Virtual Console) would be welcome as well. Or about some expansions for My Nintendo service. But in reality, I suspect it'll be mostly Pokemon. XD
And perhaps I'm among the few who are honestly curious but not hyped about NX. Most appealing is the rumoured concept that could make it the first home console for me to use without a TV and outside (and thus actually be able to play consistently; yes, I know about PS remote play, but even there it would take a TV/PC screen for preparations and linking the systems). But the starting price tag will likely make it a distant purchase as well, and I have a seemingly endless list of older platforms' titles to catch up with.
I called it exactly. I said it only yesterday morning that it would be on Thursday. It's pretty crappy that it's only 3DS information though.

Regarding the NX, you'd be surprised how many games they could add onto their NX Direct if they did it "two months later". It really all adds up. It will mean the NX Direct will be one hell of a show!
No NX, so I don't really care. No near-future Nintendo games currently hold my interest and I can garantee like 1/3 of the broadcast will be about Federation Force (which doesn't interest me). Sun and Moon is exciting though

As someone who LOVES their 3DS, I am quite excited for this Nintendo Direct. It's become my favourite system of all time thanks to the incredible support its been given thus far. Easily one of the most impressive game librarys for a system since the SNES.

@BensonUii I think this is pretty likely as well. Would be a good way to make some easy money off of their already developed emulator. Just depends on licensing issues, but doubt that is too difficult. Hopefully we get a word about square Vc releases as well. Not expecting much other than this being a marketing platform for their announced releases. Maybe a galaxy port to 3DS since the Galaxy 3Dxl reveal was way to suspicion now that a direct was announced.

The amount of spotlight that 3DS gets compared to the Wii U makes me doubt that the NX is what's described in the EG rumours. Why keep as much support going as there is if you're going to shunt the platform for something new in a matter of months?
I really hope they announce something instead of just talking about Pokemon and Mario Party.

Ace Attorney, Yokai Watch 2, Dragon Quest VII and Pokemon are the biggest things I see getting coverage during the Nintendo Direct, especially YW2, DQ7 and AA since those release in September. Perhaps we'll also see more stuff revolving around Disney Magical World 2, Dragon Quest VIII, and Shin Megami Tensei. But a surpise announcement or two (Monster Hunter Stories, Theatrhythm Dragon Quest, etc) would be nice too.
Maybe Animal Crossing mobile and Fire Emblem mobile will be shown off. I know this is gonna be a mostly 3ds direct but i could sill happen as its close to the release date.

@TheDavyStar Maybe you can play 3DS games on the NX. I'm not sure about this, but I think that every new portable is able to play games from the last one.
Also, it's necessary to focus attention on the 3DS since the Wii U obviously failed. Most of the Nintendo customers own a 3DS so it's their objective to keep them busy while preparing the NX, in my opinion. If they stop delivering just because the 3DS will have a successor soon customers will feel abandoned instead of feeling that their product is constantly supported and could end up getting other consoles from the competition.
Is this a Europe thing only, or does the US get one too? The only thing I'm excited for is Pokemon Sun and Moon, what else is there?

There could really be a ton of things to talk about, but hardly any could be true. A Kid Icarus sequel would be awesome, or Luigi Mansion 3, new amiibo, price cut, New 2DS needs to be made so kids can play with amiibo (why keep making old innards for 2DS when both New 3DS use new parts, it's a waste of manufacturing.) The 2DS is $79, they should kill that stock and make New 2DS $99 for the holidays, bundle ACNL so kids buy those amiibos. Also just in time for AC mobile game. Man, ACNL New 2DS bundle w/ a couple of cards for $99 actually sounds good enough to be real, doesn't it?

The 3DS XL is $174.99 and the smaller New 3DS 3D Land bundle (including game and 2 faceplates) was only $149.99.
That's pretty cheap.
On top of that, this past weekend Target held a sale for 10% off every purchase store wide and online, and another 5% off if you use your REDCard.

I thought New 3DS would have TV out. And after DS could dl demos from Wii I really thought 3DS and Wii U would work much better together. Why can 3DS be used as a controller for SSB but not any other game? And Nintendo has a history of interconnectivity between Gamecube and Game Boy with those cables. So why shouldn't Wii U and 3DS play well together?
I think it's too late now though, whatever may have been done has been moved on to NX. 13mil Wii U apparently wasn't worth the effort for them. Can't even cut the price to move some consoles, don't want to overshoot their 800,000 financial predition. If 3DS output it's great games library to TV via Wii U, then Wii U might sell, and Nintendo won't allow that, I think it's OOS.
Nintendo is really pushing the NX no info thing. They clearly know it is way past due with the disclaimers. Just tell us already.

@JaxonH I've seen New XL for $175 a couple of times, but I think those were mostly weekly sales. Nintendo has never officially announced that price like they did with the $79 2DS. And that very cool New 3DS $149 bundle was store limited. And, just yesterday they announced the New Galaxy New 3DS XL, but they didn't announce a new price, it's $199, no game bundled.
So while you are correct, New 3DS XL could gave been easily had recently for $175, I do velvet it is still officially $199. That could change though for the holidays.
So, what do you think about a New 2DS? No 3D, but 2 thumbsticks and NFC built in. Maybe a New 2DS XL, thought that might be too big and expensive.
I know my chances are limited, but Advance Wars (a new game, old games released playable on the 3DS, or a compilation of the old games as one new one) would make my day amazing. I'm glad that we have so much Fire Emblem recently, but a new Advance Wars would make this system easily my favorite of recent times.
FINALLY! Hopefully we'll get a new pokemon announced for Sun and Moon. I... can't think of anything else we need. But we're definately due more games. The wasteland is barren, guys.

Oh, good news, this makes a good case for an NX Home. If NX is a handheld hybrid with TV out why push 3DS so hard now? Once they get around to announcing NX hybrid, late September I'd wager only a month from now, 3DS would be dead anyway. Well unless XL is $149 and the NX is $349, so even if it's a hybrid it's priced as a Home due to the dock so they kill Wii U, keep 3DS.
But I'll budge, 20% Home and Away, 80% hybrid. "Core" "Tesseract" I should pick one and stick with it.

You have to consider that for us outside the US, there are many factors outside of Nintendo's control. One thing that makes the 3DS more expensive is the dollar - at least in Chile, its growing stronger than the peso and its making imports more expensive, plus all stuff like taxes and those things.

@rjejr - why 3DS and Wii U weren't closer related I will never understand. There should have been a 3DS card slot in the system and a single eshop for both.....but maybe the tech wasn't there or cheap enough yet to make it work.
I haven't got a clue what NX is as of now. So many different rumors with convincing arguments. I think it will be revealed, or the reveal revealed, at the Tokyo Game Show though which means not much longer of a wait.
I'm most interested in finding out about backwards compatibility and with what system. Either I need a back up gamepad or whole Wii U to put away for 15 years from now when kids are gone to college and I get to replay these games.

@Luna_110 Yeah, I'm aware of all of that and that it isn't Nintendo's fault. However, that's why I mention the transition. I'm quite sure it won't happen, but it would be great if Nintendo based the prices depending on the country so that differences in prices between countries aren't as big as they are now, even with taxes. After all, more access to handleds and consoles for more people means more game sales in the long run. Still, the price could never be as good as it is in USA though, but right now as it is, it feels like we are paying double the price they pay or even more.
I'm also aware that it the trade in program was sponsored by the stores, but I mentioned it so that others could understand why it isn't as easy for other countries to get a New 3DS. As you said, we have many factors against us.

That's not always useful, since a lot of the times, the presentations are of totally different games because of Nintendo's awesomely archaic region restrictions...

End of August would have been nice. Wii U price cut ND was end of August. So would have been May ahead of E3, or at E3, or at Gamescon. No, not at Gamesonc, if they were going to skip E3 they might as well skip Gamescon as well.

Oh, both Wii u and 3DS were shown on Sept 13 in 2011, 2012, but Sony is Sept 13 this year ahead of TGS which Nintendo won't be attending.

@rjejr I think a big factor will be Ever Oasis launch date. Nintendo announced 2017 at E3 but if let's say that is January then they could arguably release all their 3DS and Wii U games (except BotW) and then announce the NX at CES like you suggested.

I don't even know what to hope for at this point, so I'll keep my expectations low. I'm sure we'll get stuff about the last maps of Fates DLC and maybe HW Legends DLC, stuff about confirmed upcoming games, and some eshop and VC stuff. We can hope and pray that they'll at least have something like FE15 or proper GBA VC (Mother 3 confirmed? shot) up their sleeve, but I doubt it. Maybe we'll get a New 3DS exclusive finally and then cows will fly. I really just feel like Nintendo should move onto an all new portable at this point; releases are definitely slowing and I bet the hardware is a major part to blame.

If it was super hard to find I'd agree but 3DS has consistently been sold for $174.99 at at least one retailer for the last 6 months.
Even now, go to Target.com and see the $174.99 price for yourself. Even if it's not official, what matters is anyone can now easily obtain one brand new for that price. May not be the fancy smancy LE models but it's still a solid New 3DS.
Oh yeah, I forgot, the Animal Crossing update! We'll definitely hear about that in the direct. May even get some new amiibo.

To be honest, I just thought of Star Rush when I heard about the direct.
I guess there is that new RPG they announced at E3, the name of which escapes me. There's Yo-Kai Watch, Pokémon Sun/Moon, and probably some more SNES VC games. All that gets a pretty big yawn from me. But that's okay, because I have Monster Hunter Generations and a massive backlog to get me through until Nintendo opens up the flood gates again in 2017.

Oh, the speculation. I am pretty excited of the potential of a couple new Nintendo 3DS games. I wonder what franchises they will revisit if they do decide to announce some big reveals. No matter what they announce, more games is always a plus. I'm just surprised they are talking about new 3DS games this late in the system's lifecycle. I fuess it was no different for the DS though!

OK, admittedly I never read that guys post, just your reply, but I do think Nintendo still has the XL MSRP at $199, so there could be an official price drop on Thursday. I was at Target on Sunday looking for that New 3DS (non XL) $149 bundle with my kid. He wasn't 100%, but we looked just to see. I'm thinking of an XL again, got $200 for my birthday, was going to buy FFXV and a PS4 on Sept 30th w/ it, but that ain't gonna happen. PS4 is Christmas now, no matter what happens on the 7th I'll pick 1 one up BF or Cyber Monday and then stick it under the tree. So maybe an XL, my kid bought LM:DM, and MHS does look good. So I'm actually interested in this ND. Not as much as an NX ND, but I'm still interested.
Just give us the date for the NX announcement and I'll be a happy boy Nintendo.

My kid probably wasn't going to buy it, but the 10% off Sunday made it a bit more interesting, and he had a $36 Target GC. If he really wanted it, yes, we would have preo-ordered. It was more of a window shopping thing.

I really think at this point Nintendo's best move is to wait at least until the end of the month before they announce the NX, announcing this week (as many people here seem to want) would be a disaster as it would be overshadowed by both Apple's and Sony's press conferences.

I can think of plenty of stuff they can put in a 3DS ND, amiibo, release dates, price cuts, none of which would really be worth talking about. But maybe a new game would be nice.
My kids and I spent 15 minutes in the pool discussing how Subspace Emissary 2 should have been a no brainer. Though with a better name. Either with or without amiibo. It was such a good story driven game w/ fighting and platforming, no sequel is a shame. Since Wii U isn't getting any games might as well make it on 3DS, push New 3DS sales if it is amiibo based.
Really dont' see a point in having an ND after all this time - E3 dind't even have one - just to promote 3DS games we already know about, youtube and twitter has been working well for them recently. If they didn't have 1 for that $149 New 3DS bundle, why now?

Funny thing, 1 of my many reasons for the hybrid over separate home and handheld consoles is that stupid card slot. Try putting a 3DS cartridge into a 3DS or XL on a table or counter-top. To make it easier flip it over, that's where it would be on a home console anyway. Its' almost impossible to do w/o holding onto the console. I have my old Atari 7800 hooked up to my kids TV and getting those cartridges in and out is such a pain. The new ones would be smaller, with an ejection button, but still, they would have to be DS or 3DS size for the handheld, so that size for the home if they shared the same cartridge, which is how it should work. The home console would be small like Wii or Wii U, not X1 or PS4 b/c no optical drive or HDD. So small, and light. Putting those little cartridges into and out of a small light box under my tv just seems like such a pain. Putting a handheld into and out of a dock to do it would be much simpler.
Now, putting a small cartridge into and out of a small console certainly isn't a reason not to build one, my kids and I would manage, but it would certainly be easier w/ a handheld in a dock.
@rjejr - 2027 the 1st will venture away to school.....by then I'll be broke so my boxed Wii U hidden in the basement will be my only option for gaming......well my SNES will still be around too.....if the boys don't wear it out. They have taken it over too.
Seen direct is 23 mins......I think they may do a Wii U one soon too. Paper Mario, FRN, Steam Collection, indie sizzle reel, maybe some love to skylanders and Lego Dimensions and a Zelda trailer to end it off could be 20 mins worth of direct. Maybe even the Mario Kart DLC or mother 3 rumored releases as a surprise. Gonna be interesting cluster of crap until NX reveal no matter what they do though.
Or nothing and eventually NX will be revealed and Wii U will be banished to gaming lore

@rjejr Oh, and it won't have an "eject button". It will be a spring loaded cartridge slot, just like on the 3DS. No pain at all to remove that from either handheld, home console and/or docking station.
And who says there will be no hard drive or any kind of solid state media inside any of these systems? They would have to have some option to install digital downloads and DLC besides an SD card slot or an external hard drive. They will probably not make that 8GB/32GB mistake again...

At least the $60 NES Mini this year should lead to a SNES Mini next year, you can probably squeeze that into your buget, that's like half a textbook.

Are we still talking about the same Ntineod? The Ntinedo who barely got the 3DS off the ground launching it in March, so they are launching NX in March.
But no, I agree they won't make the same mistake, 8GB was woefully inadequate, and that 1 didn't have a game for $299, 32GB was OK, but at $349 was too expensive and came w/ a game nobody wanted. So consumers had a choice, inadequate or overpriced. They wont' do that again.
But do you really think they'll have a HDD? There has never been a Nintendo console w/ a HDD. Never. Not ever. Why start now? Maybe 32GB in the handheld, 64GB in the home. Could be on board or an SD micro card. If it's a hybrid probably a SD micro card w/ a dock for an external HDD like Wii U. But no HDD.
Same goes for optical. No optical, even if it's Home and Away, same cartridge. And no, a tiny cartridge on a Home in a cabinet under a TV is not "easy", even spring loaded. Consoles are too light, they slide around too much. Tiny cartridge in my dark poorly lit basement, not fun.
Oh, and since we're here - where aren't we? - I do think they will have an option like 8/32GB. Maybe not storage sizes, but something. Maybe there is a Home and Away, that's giving people a choice. Maybe it's a hybrid, I think they'll do a dock bundle and no dock bundle, that's a choice. Whether Reggie was talking about 1 hybrid or 1 platform, I think there will be more than 1 option for consumers to purchase. Maybe only 1 in March, but 2 by next Christmas. I won't say it will be a "mistake" this time though. I think the mistake last time was more about the game/no game than different storage sizes. I think options can be good, but they have to look good. If it is a hybrid, or a Home and Away, they can bundle them each w/ a different game that's more suiting it's purpose, even if it or they play the same cartridges. Something quick and easy w/ minimal graphics for portability, something graphically intensive for home use. If it is a hybrid, if they bundle it both w/ and w/o a dock, they might still want 2 marketing managers, hence the 2 job openings. Maybe instead of Tesseract I should call it Chameleon as the same core could be primarily as a Home or Away.

No, it wasn't. It was in reference to the fact that I put the number of the comment where you mentioned AC in my reaction, just in case you had no idea what I was talking about...
But agreed on the bodily climate issue; got the same, longing for an end to this horrible weather. Luckily, winter is coming...

No, I never said that. I do believe they will have some type of solid state drive/flash memory in it, and in a higher capacity than was in the Wii U. The prices for bare bone modules starting at 64GB are next to nothing nowadays, especially at bulk purchasing prices, so they could at least add that to the insides of either the dock or the handheld or whatever device, besides the probably present SD card slot.
Skipping the optical drive remark, since I never expected that to be in there in the first place, especially since the cartridge rumor gained traction.

Well, I don't know how much force you use when pressing buttons or removing media, but my consoles never move around when I operate them, and I'm a pretty big guy...
So if I can manage to remove or insert an SD card in the Wii with one hand without the console even moving a millimeter, then I can bloody well insert or eject a spring-loaded cartridge, so that one's completely on you, my friend.
Seems to me that you need to be a bit more gentle with your video game consoles...
I'm not going to dwell too much on your basement being dark and poorly lit, since that and kids playing there being an appropriate combo does not compute in my head...
And a game room (or a man cave) needs to be well lit and equipped with a decent audio/video setup anyway, so maybe you
need to pick up a paint brush and/or put up some atmospheric lighting there. Also nicer to display the ol' games collection in...
Oh, and let's not forget the game fridge and microwave: no time to leave the cave for something trivial as bodily sustenance when you're in the middle of a gaming session...
@rjejr Oh, and the same cartridge for home and away was a ThanosReXXX original. I said that from the moment cartridges became a thing. It also makes perfect sense.
They'll probably just upgrade the capacity of 3DS cartridges to a 32GB minimum, and later on, when games get more complicated, they can switch to 64GB cartridges.

@Frosty_09 Oh, definitely a sequel to Dual Strike. See, One of the reasons why I love Advance Wars is its staple "Haribo" colorful visuals. It's really cute and somehow complements the explosive violence in the game quite well. While I've enjoyed what I've played of Days of Ruin, I'm not a big fan of the dark, dritty nature of that game at all. It almost feels non-Advance Wars like, even if the excellent strategy-based gameplay is still present.
Long story short, I'd very much appreciate a return to the cheery, colorful visuals of the first three AW games. Days of Ruin is not bad in the slightest; it's just that I don't like the context of that game.
