@Xenocity I'm going to find it hard to upgrade (I've had Wii U for 2 years) with upgrades. The new IP is going to need to be REALLY enticing. Fingers crossed!
Personally, I'd love it if it launched with a new Mass Effect or some other 3rd party game on there - simultaneous to the XBO and PS4 versions - and the Nintendo one was by far the best. If only to see the comments on Eurogamer and Polygon etc. Maybe I'm just being a petty fanboy though!
@Xenocity So do you think the launch line-up can just be a few Nintendo staples in HD, with possible portable cross-play or something? I'm curious as to what they need to launch with to make a dent this time.
@Xenocity I know what you mean about the hardcore being a vocal minority. It just seems like, in today's environment, the hardcore needs to be catered to as well or they quickly label it a dud and the wider market smells failure. Maybe I'm wrong.
Still, a launch line-up that includes new Metroid, F Zero and whatever other clickbait classics they can muster would get them attention in the gaming press at least. "Here, you wanted these titles, we listened, and here they are in 1080 HD 60fps etc etc! Oh, and here's something new from Notch and something new from [insert fan-favourite developer here]."
Maybe system-sellers at launch aren't even such a big deal now? PS4 beat XBO out of the gate but it was less to do with the games and more to do with Microsoft at E3, right? It seemed like it had more to do with value for money and PR this gen, to me at least. I'd love to know how Nintendo think they can find space for themselves mid-cycle. It's a depressing thought but @Xenocity has a point about the hardcore - it was really strange watching the hive mind largely declare Sony the winners at E3 based on games that mostly won't come out until 2017. I wonder who NX is aimed at then if the hardcore's money is already off the table. I guess Nintendo would say 'everyone' but NX would need to be a powerhouse to make that happen, surely?
@Xenocity I hear you about new experiences. The NX will need something really fresh in its launch line-up somewhere - especially after the year we just had in gaming. And then you look at the interesting indies coming to XBO and PS4 in 2016... tough battle.
@Cyberbotv2 And you're right about VC. As someone who skipped Gamecube and the first Wii I've had some of the best fun on Wii U just collecting indies and Nintendo classics via eShop and VC. There's a huge pool of gaming history there which joe public probably has no idea about. Here's hoping they nail the marketing this time!
@Cyberbotv2 Yeah, I'm not sure either. Didn't Nintendo once say Metroid wasn't a big seller? The gaming press would love it, as they would a Rare exclusive, but the general public?
I don't know what a Nintendo system-selling launch title would look like these days. I'm also not sure Nintendo's biggest hitters can do it on their own - especially mid-cycle - which leaves, what, 3rd party exclusives? Or industry-leading tech which leaves PS4 and XBO in the dust? This IS Nintendo we're talking about here. Either way, I hope they leave enough time to develop a killer line-up.
Here's a fun question for everyone... Q: What would be the ideal NX launch games? What could possibly convince Sony / MS customers to take a hard look at the system? Metroid? A 3rd party exclusive? What will it take to make this a must-have device across the board?
@fed0ra7 My interest in Code Name STEAM was piqued this week thanks to fans saying it was a 2015 favourite. So I checked it out on the Aussie eShop: $59! Curiosity had to end there for me. Meanwhile, Steamworld Heist is $24.99. Shame, I wanted to see Abe Lincoln do his thing.
Surprised to see Woolly World in there. I don't remember seeing much love for it at the time... outside of the graphics. Would pick it up for cheap if they ever put it on sale but won't hold my breath.
@OorWullie Thanks for that. I went out and bought Splatoon today... and Mario Maker (though I wish I'd bought Treasure Tracker now - I plain old forgot about the little fella in my shopping frenzy). Loading up Splatoon now!
Been interesting reading everyone's favourite Wii U games so far. This is far from scientific but Splatoon seems more popular than Mario Maker. I was trying to decide between the two earlier today but I'm leaning towards Splatoon now - thanks everyone! Mind you, Toad's Treasure Tracker is still calling me...
@Xaessya I don't know why but I always use the Gamepad while my Pro Controller only gets dragged out for multiplayer. Perhaps it's laziness on my part but I like the heft of the big beast.
@Moshugan Well said that man. Also, these demands of "no gimmicks, just a regular controller!" seem pretty unimaginative. How many near-identical consoles do we really need out there doing the same thing? Nintendo might swing for the fences and fail sometimes but the industry needs crazy innovators or where would we end up?
@DESS-M-8 Making an expensive console isn't going to help Nintendo in developing markets like China and India. Anyone who wants to play a multi-plat AAA game probably already owns an XB1 or PS4 by now.
FF looks quite fun but maybe people are so bitter because the Wii U will disappear without that HD Metroid they've been requesting since the console was first announced.
I'd be happy with Super Metroid 3D on my lil handheld but I've given up "putting it out there" and the Australian shop would probably never get it anyway (I'm looking at you, Outrun 3D, you!)
@LilC They've already said they're aiming for affordability so I wouldn't get your hopes up for PS4/Xbox parity as far as graphics are concerned.
Having said that, I'd love to see Digital Foundry or someone investigate whether the price on graphics chips has fallen enough for that to happen... hint hint
@Shadowkiller97 Same here. Bought a PS3 two years ago and have been buying loads of big games for cheap. Means you can take some risks on those 7/10 games you weren't sure about too. Loved buying a platform when it's been out for years. Since I missed 360 the backwards compatibility is real tempting to get an Xbox One if it means I can go out and buy lots of cheap AAA games.
@sdcazares1980 I don't know. Seems to be a few here who want a powerful NX that can compete with PS4/Xbone but... Nintendo.
Miyamoto on NX: "unique and affordable"
I bought my Wii U knowing it'll probably end up taking pride of place in a box next to my Dreamcast - a noble failure - but like a few others here I can't imagine being swayed by NX straight off the bat. I just can't see them delivering a great launch line-up or luring enough 3rd parties. Would love to be proved wrong but... Nintendo.
Ugh... every time I read a description of the controls I glaze over and give up. Without a demo I'll probably sit this one out and wait for a return to Crimson Skies.
Indies on eShop have made Wii U and 3DS my favourite Nintendo generation. But they need to address:
1. Memory 2. Content locked to consoles 3. Marketing
I'm not sure how many downloaded games I'm going to put on my Wii U now that I think they're replacing it and haven't said what's happening with Club Nintendo.
p.s. Mr Baker, could you find out what's happening with 3D OutRun on the Australian shop? Bless you.
@Toadthefox I wanted to a post something about how I don't really care if 2008 was worse because I'm living in 2015 and my Wii U was just given last rites but... you kinda covered everything.
On a brighter note: I went looking for Super Metroid 3D on my 3DS today because all this talk about Metroid and guess what... doesn't exist. SALT MEET WOUND!!

Re: Nintendo Download: 31st December (Europe)
Imagine you just got a Wii U for xmas and this is the first Nintendo sale you saw. Not exactly a hearty welcome to the fold, is it?

Nintendo should really be thanking anyone who's using their eShop this Xmas with some savings on their own library.
Re: Nintendo Download: 17th December (Europe)
Is this the moment I try a Shantae game? And which platform?
Re: Nintendo Download: 17th December (Europe)
@wazlon I had fun with Fractured Soul too for a few hours. Keep meaning to go back to it.
Re: NX Won't Be The Next Version Of Wii Or Wii U, Says Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima
If primary and mobile consoles are integrated, does that mean the end of 3D? I really hope not.
Re: Feature: Reflecting On Three Years With The Wii U - Part One
@OorWullie Thanks mate - I'm gonna get my Splatoon on. Just googled how to find the single player so I'll train up and see you on the battlefield!

Sega Rally + Skies of Arcadia please!
Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's Challenge With Super Mario's 2D Future

Re: Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Will Be Bigger Than Your Average Castlevania-esque Romp
I hope the NX isn't out by the time this hits Wii U.
Re: Feature: The Biggest 3DS Retail Games of 2015 - Summer Edition
None of the above. Hopefully the indies have something for me.
Re: Sega Sorry That It "Betrayed" Fans, Hopes To Win You Back With A New Game Announcement This September
@opeter YES! Another Vanquish! Though Platinum Games sound quite busy at the mo.

As long as it has Sega blue skies and isn't Sonic.

I didn't buy a Wii U to play DS games. Can't we move onto Gamecube or something already?

Thanks for the update. What will I complain about now though?
Re: Nintendo Download: 2nd July (North America)
I've lost my Dreamcast copy of Skies of Arcadia. Nintendo, I know you're mostly deaf so what if I shout real loud for the GC version?
SKIES OF ARCADIA!!!

Thank you.

Re: Talking Point: The Mystery of Devil's Third and Its Drift Away from the Spotlight
@brutalpanda But none of those games are system sellers.
Re: Talking Point: The Mystery of Devil's Third and Its Drift Away from the Spotlight
@brutalpanda Nobody's picking up a Wii U after that E3, unless they radically drop the price to clear stock.
