There have been a lot of brawlers 'inspired' by Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and the latest one to arrive on the scene is the Warner Bros. title MultiVersus - featuring iconic heroes and cartoon characters like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Bugs Bunny and Tom & Jerry.
The tech experts over at Digital Foundry couldn't resist and have decided to do a video comparison to see how this new game holds up against Masahiro Sakurai's masterpiece. It's already got a tremendous uphill battle on its hands considering how much Smash Bros. has been fine-tuned over the years, but can it actually compete?
Digital Foundry notes how the combat naturally borrows a lot of ideas from the Smash Bros. moveset, but the mechanics and flow of combat aren't "quite as tight" as Smash Bros. It's also apparently missing the on-screen visual cues and sounds that have been perhaps overlooked. Across the board - the game runs at 60 fps matching Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's performance.
There are plenty more comparisons throughout - with DF getting into a more detailed breakdown around the 10 minute mark, so feel free to take a look if you have been wondering how this Smash Bros. contender holds up. You can learn more over on our sister site Push Square:
And if you're wondering, this free-to-play title is seemingly skipping a Switch release. There are plenty of alternatives to Super Smash Bros. on the Switch though like Brawlhalla and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl.
What do you think of this latest Smash rival? Have you tried it out? Are you still playing Smash Bros. on Switch? Leave your thoughts down below.

Dont matter, cause game been delayed indefinitely. Maybe the merger is causing issues.
Thought DF was above this kind of clickbait.
One is a fully fledge game, the other is a mobile game promoted for consoles as Free to Pay- Sorry... I meant Pay to Win- oops. I did it again, I meant to say Free to Pay- Darn it!
One has Wario, the other doesn't. Enough said.
@illmatic20xx They said it wasn’t because of the merger.
I don’t really think you can compare this to smash, I think the better comparison is brawlhalla, as that seems to be the game it’s competing with anyway.
Smash will of course be the better game, it made platform fighters. But I think is all up to preference, because I think both does one thing better then The other, and you may like that better then the other, but personally, I love both. Been playing multiversus all week (Tom and harry/bugs main)
Not even close. Smash bros destroys this game. Rivals aether is the best alternative to smash I think. I’d take nick allstars over wbs effort.
@HotGoomba Swhich one has Wario?
Yeah lets compare a gaming icon with some cartoon ripoff
@Rika_Yoshitake No, no, no, it's Fee to pay!
Oof, this comment section is rough. but it’s a smash bros “rip off”, and free to play so it automatically sucks.
Question : What do you think of this latest Smash rival? Have you tried it out? Are you still playing Smash Bros. on Switch?
Me : I never like Smash Bros games and the clones.
I tried out Multiversus and really didn't care for it. It just feels awkward, the mechanics just don't quite feel right. Combine with how aggressively from the instant you turn it on the game is trying to wring every last cent out of you and yeah, not for me.
I think this game works a lot better for team battles than smash. Smash feels a bit more competitive and the controls are tighter making better for 1v1s in my opinion, but don't get me wrong smash is still great for multiplayer it just feels more natural in this game I guess is what I'm trying to say.
@Snatcher
Platformer Fighters have been a genre for a while now. Smash invented it, but that doesn't make this a ripoff.
@PBandSmelly Oh no I agree with you, I was joking about people that call it a rip off in that comment, I think this game is far from a rip off,.
As mentioned earlier, you don’t need DF for a comparison. One game charges a sizeable entry fee the other does not (yet) and if it does will join many other similar games in the void of forgotten. One contains multiple characters pulled from the gaming universe. The other is what someone has the rights to.
@Lizuka the second I found out you had to unlock the characters either through coins got from dailies or extremely drip-feed coins from toasts was when I clocked out
@Royalblues I feel like if this game was on switch it would have been a totally different reaction.
If they have Waluigi, I‘m on board.
in the face of all the platform fighters competing against smash i think this has the most ambition behind it. its almost impressive how much work is being put into the game with the cosmetics and voice actors alone.
free to play models can easily go wrong but as a casual who rarely feeds into season passes, this is just a new game for me to pop in and out. and the game has just been fun for me
moreso than the extremely floaty combat with next to no feedback, it's the 30 second loops of middling orchestral covers that hold this game back
playing on the steven universe stage for longer than 2 minutes is like going to get lobotmized
@Royalblues I mean I get it if you can’t afford the console, so it sucks if you can’t play it. But hating on a game just because it’s ftp, and it’s “copy cat” “rip off” is just kinda messed up, not saying there aren’t valid complaints, but those are just the main ones I have seen.
And this game has a budget behind it, I mean look at it, full 3d models, well animated, emotes skins, va (at launch), plus the gameplay is just fun, but not for everyone. And it’s in beta for crying out loud!
Somehow all the Smash clones don't interest me at all. They just don't have really interesting characters for me. So I'll pass on this one.

I know this is a Nintendo fan site, so fanboys will fanboy, but this game is actually pretty great and quite different from smash. You can play locally with other players and every character is immediately unlocked as well.
@NinjaWaddleDee as far as i can tell the characters are locked until you pay coin/whatever the v-bucks equivalent is called to unlock them, unless you have the founders pack stuff (source: most of my playing was grinding so i could play jake the dog)
Yeah, I'll stick with the one that's not free to play, thanks.
This one feels like a Team Sonic Racing version of Smash Bros. Whereas Team Sonic Racing is like Mario Kart but with team-up mechanics, this is just like Smash Bros. but with team-up mechanics.
The awful cursor driven menus and F2P BS is bad enough but the game openly using MMO/hero shooter archetypes for the characters just feels soulless for the lack of a better word, when I’m playing Smash I don’t think of nonsense like that and I doubt the devs did too as the bulk of the cast are jack of all trades in terms of utility.
JESUS SO MANY CRYBABIES
this game is amazing , so its not on the switch deal with this you whiny fanboys.
calling it a mobile game is a joke.
also you do remember the switch is also a mobile console yes?
in my opinion this game is hella fun, and the sheer potential of all the charcters to come, surly blows smash out of the water...
i would take taz and bugs any day over king k rule and another sword fighter...
i mean comon... this of the options...
alf
gremlins
all of dc
all of loonytunes
any tv show wb owns ( the hound is the nex got to come i belive)
guys its crazy promising.
if you have a pc just play it on there its a shame youll miss on all the fun.
,i opened 8 characters for free in one week of play, like 2 hours a day.
not that much of a grind if you ask me...
Since the roster makes or breaks these games, personally I would do something silly for a Disney version. Especially if they weren’t afraid to use the princesses. Mulan would wreck everyone but I would pay good money to see Pocahontas punch Cinderella in the face. Tiana drop kick Sleeping Beauty or Elisa Maza shoot Belle? Bring it. And I know I am not the only female that feels that way.
WB doesn’t have a roster I care about personally which means even if this were better than smash it is a no go for me.
@NinjaWaddleDee God I just legit don't like the aesthetics or characters. I'm more into a game about video games. A celebration of the actual medium. Not Bugs Bunny or Superman. I'm just not interested in the offering or how it looks. Sure call it Nintendo bias 🙄
@spidey123 I don't want to play as any of those characters. No thanks.
@Kirby_Girl ok? Idk why your acting like these comments were personally aimed at you.
@Royalblues Some delusional Nintendo fans still believe Switch is powerful. What can we expect with ancient processor, only 4 GB RAM and eMMC storage speed (or microSD, which is slower) and yet some people still make fun of Steam Deck. I believe they have no idea about hardware, or ignorant (probably still in school).
@Kirby_Girl well personally as an animator this game is like heaven to me.
and the gameplay is rock solid too
it's simple
you a Nintendo player? Smash wins
you a other console player? WB wins
you play all consoles? Smash still wins
@somebread that's actually not true. Only if you want to play online are the characters locked. If you play locally against someone you get every character. I did this last night.
@NinjaWaddleDee its a shame that still applies to private online lobbies then (or at least it did last sat when i started playing)
,) what a bizarre choice--i want to futz about with my friends on steam without having to go to their house!
i guess there's remote play together, but even on ethernet its a huge crapshoot
@spidey123 I rather watch my animation then see them reduced to a standard style across the board like this, personally but if you are satisfied then it good for one of us.
@Snatcher Just wanted to put it out there that some folks might just not be interested, because they legit aren't interested in the offering. As a possible explanation for some of the comments. Contrary to what some defenders might generalize.
@Kirby_Girl It’s a fact that some people aren’t interested, I still don’t think that means people can’t disagree with there specific reasoning.
I forgot MultiVersus was a thing, having said that, I'll download it and give it a shot on my PS4. I plan on going into it, with an open mind, I'll judge the game based off of it's own merits.
@Rika_Yoshitake There's nothing Pay To Win at all about it.
@TheMelodiusRose
I love the switch as much as the next person but specs are something that can be actively measured.
iirc the switch uses a version of the tegra X1 (the tegra series being a series of chips designed for mobile devices) which was released in 2015, there was a faster version known as the X1+ released in 2019 which i imagine was responsible for a lot of "switch pro" rumours but im not sure if it was used in any switch models. (someone more knowledgeable than me could probably fill in the details on that regard)
There have been skilled Devs who have managed to get a lot out of the hardware but there are still limitations which is why im definitely hoping that with the improvements in mobile chipsets over the past few years that nintendo still keep the "hybrid" concept for their next system. the specs done even need to be above the competition or even match it, just closing the gap a little would help with multiplatform games.
either way im hoping that we will see a more powerful switch model when the chip shortage isnt as bad.
@TheMelodiusRose A few years it wasn't that weak but now that the new gen consoles are out then yeah a console that isn't even as strong as the base X1 is weak. I love my Switch and i'm currently playing XB3 as i type this but the console is pretty dated and weak nowadays.
@Royalblues
To be fair the switch does seem to be maintaining its momentum more than previous systems.
it feels like the systems "gimmick" has the most mass appeal due to its emphasis on choosing how you play (with very few games having mandatory touch or motion controls).
Not into fighting games but looks wacky enough
Removed - trolling
@Snatcher Oh that wierd.i wonder what eould be the reason then? Game was seemingly doing really well, so delaying new content for it indefinitely would hurt it.
@HotGoomba Minecraft Steve
@illmatic20xx I know, specially right before evo. I think that they just need more time to balance characters and fix hitboxes and such, many Marty needs more time, I’m not sure.
@TheMelodiusRose
Compared to ps4 and xbox one which were released a few years prior to it the specs were definitely lacking but again its to be expected considering it was running on a tegra chipset and was designed with the ability to play handheld it was definitely a fair tradeoff.
nowadays its more the difficulty of getting games to run on systems with vastly different specs, considering we have "cross gen" games like Tales of arise where the "last gen" version is on ps4 and xbox one.
Again the reason people say the system is using a "mobile chipset" is because the tegra line are largely considered mobile chipsets, when the tegra x1 was announced articles even reffered to it as a "mobile superchip".
I for one do love Super Smash Bros. However I want something fresh as well. Multiversus isn't perfect but the roster is going to be. So much more potential to be had. Give it a chance and it'll impress. I mean, it's free and people are complaining. Smash was $60 minus dlc and with this Multiversus is certainly worth a few hours of your life being free.
For the people still saying they ripped off Smash Bros., it's called a genre, you can't own a genre, it's just like all those FPS games, all of them took from Wolfenstein 3D and Doom.
Imagine if id Software patented FPS games after releasing Doom in 1993? We wouldn't have Duke Nukem 3D, GoldenEye, Half-Life, Unreal, Halo, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Bioshock...
Imagine if Chuck Berry patented Rock and Roll? We wouldn't have Elvis, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Queen, Deep Purple...
Game's great, it's already way better than Smash because the barrier of entry is so low. Free to play and on every platform, that means I can play with all my friends, why would I spend 60 dollars on smash just to fight the AI?
Multiverse is actually pretty fun. I main Harley Quinn, well, at least I’m trying to. I honestly wish this game was on Switch though. What’s the hold up on that WB games?
Smash is so boring.
@TheMelodiusRose
In terms of specs its definitely behind the previous generation (that being the ps4 and xbox one which are almost 10 years old)
but then again if you enjoy the system then it shouldn't be a problem, in the same way that people talking about the systems limitations doesn't mean they hate the system.
one of the reasons which things like digital foundry's technical reviews exist is so people can get a good idea of what they are in for with a game or port, since technical aspects like frame-drops and resolution can be measured but whether or not said things would bother someone can depend on the person.
after all things like specs are the cold hard numbers but whether or not something is visually pleasing is in the eye of the beholder (its also why some games have performance and visual modes)
It's not limited by the switches hardware & poor online so performance wise it's obviously better 🤷♂️
@Royalblues I agree with your comments but I noticed you said "predecessor" instead of "successor" and how the Xbox One came out "3 and a half year later" than the Switch instead of "earlier". It's like a weird case of time perception dyslexia.
Ah yes let’s call every single platform fighting game a “smash Bros ripoff” because clearly inspired is not the correct word for it. Ugh. Also the game isn’t pay to win. The only thing that will cost money are cosmetics.
@Rika_Yoshitake you can get all the characters for free by playing the game might be a grind but it's still possible where as with smash Bros you have to buy the game at £50 then buy both fighter passes at £20 each to get all the characters
@Rika_Yoshitake & every game that releases on switch is technically a mobile game because the console uses a mobile processor lol
For me MULTIVERSUS is as good as Smash Bros. It´s a draw.
Multiversus is better here:
(ONLINE)
(AGGRESSIVENESS)
MULTIVERSUS is more agressive than Smash Bros. You cannot block (you can dodge, air dash, etc..), so you go to war. And one feature I don't like about Smash Bros is the defense command. For me, it breaks the action a lot. In theory it's cool, because when someone blocks you can grab it...but in practice, especially when playing online, we see that this is a pretty boring part of Smash Bros. gameplay.
(PRICE)
MULTIVERSUS is free...it´s not pay to win. I play it free and i have 80% wins. If you can pay for all characters, it´s cheaper than Smash Bros. You can buy characters just playing!
(TEAM PLAY)
MULTIVERSUS is the best team play game i´ve played. You can save your partner the other side the screen...and now the people are discovering you can use this power to make more combos during a jump, etc...so fun!
(DUB)
The voices here are better than Smash Bros.
(FUN FACTOR)
Today I have more FUN playing MULTIVERSUS because the online quality. I don't have friends who come to my house often. And when they come, they don't like to play Smash Bros...they prefer Tekken 7.
Smash bros is better here:
(STAGES) 100+ GREATTTTTT stages!!!
(NUMBER OF CHARACTERS) so much bigger!!!
(MUSIC) Too much great musics!!!
(OFFLINE GAMEPLAY) In the RARE situations you can grab 3 friends and play it offline, it´s incredible. Rare, but incredible.
Conclusion:
I´m playing 10 hours / week of MULTIVERSUS and... zero hours Smash Bros.
ONLINE is the BIGGEST difference...and not close.
I really hope that Multiversus comes to Switch at some point. It genuinely seems like people are having a ton of fun with it, and the focus on tag-team mechanics seems like a very welcome twist to the platform fighter genre!
If your only gaming option is a Switch and you want a non-Smash plat fighter, play Rivals of Aether. It's an excellent, excellent game.
@Rika_Yoshitake As far as I know, you can only use real money for cosmetic stuff. Nothing pay-to-win here.
Edit: Actually, I think its for unlocking characters faster. But the other customization options (perks) you need to unlock by playing.
@Royalblues Not trying to be annoying but you were talking about the future. "When the Switch's predecessor releases, whatever cellphone that comes out that year will be like 2.5 times as capable". So it's "when the Switch's successor releases".
@KoopaTheGamer Yes you can buy just playing...My character is Finn in pajamas LOL (Level 19). When you play you gain points (season points i guess). And much more points more you can buy in the game. Other people can give you the game money after matches. And they give a lot, cause there is achievements for giving game-money prize to other people after matches.
@Royalblues Your assessment of the Switch's hardware is not even close to being true. In 2017 when the X1 came out, it was clearly better than any other mobile chipset on the market, particularly the GPU. The CPU side is nothing to shout about to be fair, it's very GPU heavy, but the GPU was ahead of its time for mobile. It wasn't until a year or two later that flagship Apple and Samsung devices could match its GPU performance.
So when the Switch came out, it was excellent hardware, at least judged as a handheld.
I don't think I'll ever get the appeal of this game?
Smash Bros - iconic video game characters duking it out. Answers the age old playground question of "who would win in a battle of Sonic Vs Mario" etc. Built on a clear love an passion for video games and all they entail.
Multiverse - whatever WB own yet again smashed together (Ready Player One, The Lego Movie + 2 + Lego Batman, Space Jam 2). Answers the never asked question of who "would win in a battle of Aria Stark Vs Tom & Jerry or Gandalf Vs Jake the Dog". A celebration of...WB owning things?
I mean it looks well made and has some fun mechanics. But the premise it's built on just feels like it takes away from the IP rather than celebrating them. It feels like a hollow cash in on the whole multiverse concept.
If someone in Westeros opened an inter dimensional portal they could end up in Ooo? Just because WB owns the rights to both of them? No thanks.
Of course nintedo fan boys who can't accept games of the same genre hate on multiversus. Imo multiversus is way better than smash ultimate, the online is actually fun, diverse cast of characters who literally every single person on the planet will know over half of them, it's not pay to win the only things you can buy are cosmetics and battle passes. It's a super fun game, but nintendo fanboys gotta be nintendo fan boys
@thinkhector @Ryan_Again Neither of you are funny.
@Royalblues X1 came out in 2014. Oh and I agree about some of the fans here praising Nintendo mobile games, but dissing this game. It is an awesome game.
@Royalblues I know it wasn't your main point, but I addressed it because I just find it weird whenever I hear people talk about the Switch's tech being "old and outdated" when it came out, as it simply isn't true, or even close to being true in the realm of mobile hardware.
You're right that the X1 came out in 2015, but then it was mainly used in the Nvidia Shield, which is not a mobile device. Plus the GPU is based on desktop hardware, which is why it was ahead of its time in 2017, and still has a solid featureset even today - supporting modern shaders, Vulkan etc.
It is pretty good, gave it a try yesterday.
@Snatcher I agree. Comparing it to Smash is not fair. Smash has had time to develop since the late 90's. Also, it has been dutifully developed by the ever committed Sakurai. Smash is just a polished project that keeps on getting polished. I love the idea of WB characters having their own Smash though. Truthfully, I would like a DC heroes game in the same vein as Capcom's X-Men and Marvel fighters.
They tried their best to make multiversus look good but the truth is that compared to smash is a gigantic pile of isht. Takes 2 seconds to know.
@spidey123 the grind is almost non existent if you ask me, and people could always get a founders pack if they want to skip f2p all together. So much pessimism in this comment section.
@TheMelodiusRose Multiple people have broken down the chips and hardware used in the switch.
It is weaker than the Xbox 1 and PS4.
yes the switch is powerful but by modern standards it is evidently quite weak compared to even last gen consoles.
The switch's main draw will be it's portability and first party offerings which make use of the limtied tech.
The switch IS limited compared to other consoles this is a fact.
It uses tegra chipsets which ARE mobile chipsets.
None of these are a problem. It doesn't make the switch not fun. The switch is fun. But they are still facts.
@VexingInsanity
100% agree, i absolutely love the system, its become one of my favourite systems of all time but the hardware is definitely showing its age.
am definitely hoping the successor keeps the hybrid concept since it would be great to see what they could do with some of the more modern chipsets (when the shortage isnt as bad)
@Lizuka
I don't feel you've actually played the game because I was shocked for a free 2 play by how little it tries to rob you of your money. It even allows you to unlock the characters instead of forcing you to buy them which again is unusual for a free 2 play game.
@Mgalens
Even though it makes all the sense in the World to keep the hybrid design for their next console, as Nintendo has proven a million times in the past, they are not known for doing what makes sense. So I am hedging my bets on either a new console to come out to extend the Switch life cycle called (The New Nintendo Switch) and it will be powerful enough to do 1440p and have a handful of games exclusive to it. Or they will move on to another system that will be a complete left turn.
(On the topic of MultiVersus Smash Bros.)
I haven't played it, mostly because it's not appealing to me. It feels a bit like Space Jam 2, an excuse to throw every Warner Bros. IP together and disguise the fact it's an ad for HBO Max, this time with Cartoon Network thrown in for good measure.
(On the off-topic of the Switch hardware)
As someone who couldn't care less about specs,
hardware, graphics and whatnot, I have a lot to say about it (some of which I've expressed in the past). But for the sake of not starting a pointless argument/flame wars, I'm gonna keep it to myself.
All I'm gonna say is this: I understand compromises have to be made, especially now that the focus is on a hybrid system, but maybe the "old" hardware was a good idea in the short run, not so much in the long run.
@TheMelodiusRose mate, the Xbox 1 and Ps4 are LAST GEN consoles with more power than the switch.
Like I said, this doesn't make the switch not fun. The switch is very fun.
It is however, a fact. You keep saying it's more powerful than last gen. It isn't. It's weaker.
It's more on par with an xbox 360 or Ps3. Still impressive to have in a hand held (hybrid home console since you just keep going on about it like it disproves how weak the switch is relatively) but still weaker than Ps4 and Xbox 1 WHICH btw are last gen just to repeat it for emphasis.
Even though the switch is good. It's main draw is always gonna be the first party offerings and portability because the Xbox and Playstation are just better home consoles. They however, are not portable, which is what makes the switch special. Again this DOESNT mean that the switch doesnt have good 3rd party games. But it still means its worse off as a home console than the other consoles that are made to be that.
@TheMelodiusRose If the Switch isnt the main console for a game, devs put it on the side. Porting a game from PS5 down to PS4 can take a week to a month, porting down again to the Switch can take up to half a year. Time is money, so devs simply ignores it.
@VexingInsanity @TheMelodiusRose
I think it's worth noting that Switch released after PS4/Xbox One but before PS5/Series S/X. Is it current-gen or last-gen? Little bit of both, I think.
However, I don't think there should be any confusion about it, Switch is way less powerful in terms of computing/graphics computing power than PS4 or Xbox One. But unlike PS4 or Xbox, it is a very power efficient system (which is important for a portable system).
In the end it doesn't matter to me. It's powerful enough to run games nicely. And that's enough.
Comments are right, online is definitely overlooked, and multiversus doesn’t even allow you to block, off stage is vary dangerous in this game.
@TheMelodiusRose Oh, sure, it's more powerful than PS3 or Xbox 360. But then again, so was Wii U. However, I don't think those are interesting comparison points since Switch released 10 years after those. Although it is impressive to have this nice of an experience in handheld format.
Are people really arguing whether the Switch can run Multiversus?
If I didn't know about it already, I would have been convinced that Multiversus was a late-gen PS3/360 game built to compete against Super Smash Bros Brawl. That doesn't make the game bad, but it clearly isn't pushing any technological boundaries whatsoever.
@TheMelodiusRose I like your optimism but I think it's important to acknowledge the limitations of the system. It's not a fair comparison to compare Switch to current-gen consoles that are huge and consume a lot of power.
But I also don't think it's true that Switch is 10 times as powerful as 7th gen consoles. In terms of memory and system architecture, Switch is definitely the clear winner, but in terms of raw performance, it's not that huge of a difference (although this is partly because Nintendo runs the Tegra chip with lower clocks to save power).
Aaaanyway, Multiversus looks fine. I don't really have any interest in it, as I already have Smash if I want to play some platform fighting games.
Its honestly fun game the mulitversus especially can play locally as well I love smash bros they are good games in each way lets just agree to disagree there both good games.
@westman98 6 years in and people are still questioning whether every other announced game can run on Switch....like seriously?
And to anybody thinking this is a low effort try to throw warner ips together, please look at the movesets for each character. You can clearly tell the team at player first games took their time to show the source material for each character, like how all of tom and Jerry's animations and attacks are trying to hit each other.
@Greatluigi I feel like people don’t even know what that word means. People just use it to describe being able to spend real money on characters, you don’t have too.
@Slinkoy1 Ikr? You don’t need any more proof then Tom and Jerry’s move set. It’s so creative!
A lot of elitist fanboys in the comment section bashing Multiversus for existing in the same timeline as Smash lol.
They are very different and can easily coexist, there are a ton of things Multiversus does better than Smash and vice versa.
The only reason it's better than smash brothers, is that multiversus is free. Everything else smash brothers just stumps in comparison. That's my review!😈😉
Lol. It’s really more close to which Smash Clone can get 2nd place at this point.
Lot of people offended here because Multiverse, Nick game, or whatever clone wasn’t the “Smash Killer” they envisioned
Some akward controls and moments but during play with my friends we found it very fun and creative. I can definitely enjoy this without paying but I’d honestly just pay full price for a game and have the base instead of just grinding
@victordamazio there’s actually a lot of historical backlash against almost every band/artists you mentioned for co-opting black musical styles without financial remuneration - like to the point it almost reads as sarcasm
I don't get why people argue over personal taste. If you like one more than the other, than play that one.
Also, all the kids on here calling people "fanboys" because they disagree with your opinion is something people do in primary school. Preferring one over the other doesn't make them a "fanboy".
I like Smash and always will, but it would be a lie to say MultiVersus hasn't overtaken it for me shockingly. I think it plays great personally. The most obvious improvement is WAY better online but there are others.
I like the idea of each character having skills specifically meant for 2V2 as it makes that style of match much more exciting to see the different strategies people come up with. It also doesn't take away from 1V1 with useless moves for the most part except for Raindog's tether move.
At least for now there are no clone characters in the roster. If they can keep up the uniqueness with dlc characters this is a huge win.
The stage hazards are also actually fun and not an annoyance unlike most of Smashes stage hazards. It's very satisfying to hit the trap floor switches on the Scooby-Doo stage to sneak in a quick KO on an unsuspecting bystander!
And to top it off the thing I was most worried about going in, the free to play aspect, feels fine if not excellent honestly. If you only want to play as one character online you can do that for only a fraction of a full priced game or if you want the whole roster unlocked the founder pack essentially simulates a normal full game purchase. I don't feel like they are trying to rip me off like most free to play titles. Only thing is the costume prices are a little hit and miss but overall I think they got a good balance.
Smash may have the bigger roster and budget but MultiVersus has it where it counts and thats enough for me.
@Korgon 100% agree!
@Rika_Yoshitake I mean from watching people play online via Steam on Twitch, the game looks pretty good. People are having fun with it, what's the issue, here?
@Miu
Way I look at the Switch vs Deck debate is this.
When it comes to a handheld for playing on a long car trip or in a house in a stationary position, nothing beats the Steam Deck. It’s an Xbox One (in terms of CPU and GPU grunt) in the palm of your hands. It even handles Sony’s PS4 to PC ports very well, which are very taxing ports. Hell it can even emulate the Switch with higher frame rates than actual Switch hardware. It’s insanely impressive.
As a proper handheld that is easily taken anywhere and is good for short play sessions, and far away from the mains, the Switch is still the king. It’s smaller, significantly lighter, has significantly stronger battery life on taxing games, and has a superior rest mode implementation.
To me they are both aimed at two different customers and their hardware design priorities reflect that. The Steam Deck feels a lot like a full size iPad Pro. Yeah you can take it places outside of the house, but you want to be sitting down to use it comfortably and you want to be in a position to play for long periods.
The Switch is like an iPad Mini. It’s not as capable as the big iPad at certain tasks, but it’s much more compact and lighter to hold. Good for quick pick up and play for five to ten minute sessions.
@TheMelodiusRose
Bro… I love the Switch but it is in no way as capable as a PS4 or even an Xbox One.
Doom Eternal is a good example of what we are talking about. It’s miraculous that it runs on Switch in the first place and it is an impressive port… but compare it to the PS4 version.
1. Resolution: on PS4 it’s a dynamic 1080P. But it never gets below 900P even in the most hectic scenes.
By comparison, the Switch version maxes out at 900P on the most quiet of sequences. But the second anything happens the DRS starts getting aggressive and the resolution drops down to anywhere between 584p and 720P docked. Handheld is even lower than that. Combined with its temporal AA solution it looks like a blurry mess in combat.
2. Framerate. PS4 is a locked 60fps. From all my time playing it, it never dropped a frame and that has been confirmed by groups like digital foundry as well. The game runs like smooth butter being cut with a hot knife.
On Switch it’s surprisingly stable at 30fps. But it can drop to the mid 20s when things go nuts.
3. Graphical settings. The PS4 version approaches medium settings on PC. Which means it looks better than Doom 2016 on high.
The switch version meanwhile is running a custom graphical setting that is below the PC’s Low setting. It’s still definitely Doom Eternal, but they toned back everything heavily to get a mostly stable framerate.
And that’s just one game. Let’s not even get into something like the Outer Worlds.
@Mgalens
nVidia’s newest mobile chipset family (used in BMW infotainment systems) is stupid powerful. It has a GPU feature set from the Ampere line of Desktop GPUs. Even supports the latest version of DLSS. And the cpu is nothing to sneeze at either; it takes a dump on the Jaguars used in the PS4 and Xbox One. If used in a Switch 2 it would allow just about every PS5 and Series X game to be ported in a playable state. It’s still far behind those two in raw FLOPs, compute units, etc. but it makes the current Tegra look like it’s from the Stone Age.
The only problem is the price tag. It’s expensive from what I’ve heard. I don’t know how Nintendo could sell a console at 350-400 dollars using that chipset. Barring nVidia cutting them a hilariously great bulk price.
There’s also the energy draw. If anything that limits the Switch concept even more than the price does. It’s a thirsty chipset. Nintendo would need to redesign the Switch’s cooling system and greatly expand its battery capacity to meet current Switch OLED battery life in big AAA titles.
@TheMelodiusRose Um my guy, you were the one that said multiple times that the switch was more powerful than last gen consoles, and after people pointed out that said last gen consoles (xbox one and ps4) were still stronger by a significant amount you still doubled down to say its still "pretty powerful" despite everything else pointing otherwise.
And now you're backtracking after being corrected... again.
Now after being proven wrong (again) you are now claiming you never meant to compare the switch to the previous gen consoles despite you outright saying so.
More things to add are you just outright making false claims about the switch being 7-10 times more powerful than the ps3 and xbox 360, the switch not running on mobile hardware, people the main draw of the switch being its "amazing graphics", not its portability and more.
Look I like my switch but it was dated the moment it launcher hardware wise as many others have pointed out. Its still weaker than almost 10 year old consoles.
The specs for all the consoles are there for you to compare, not to mention the inferior ports of multi platform games compared to other consoles (framerate being cut in half, resolution too, some features just outright missing etc.) and the outright absence of some games on the system because it cant even handle the games to be even worth considering porting for.
The limitations of its hardware are painfully obvious and its clear you just don't want to admit you're wrong.
Lotta negativity in these comments, wow. Me and the other cohosts of my channel are loving this game and believe that it will over qualifies at filling in the gap left by Smash Ultimate (in the event it never gets a sequel). Even if Smash comes out with another sequel, there's room for it to exist alongside Multiversus. The potential for new WB universe characters are virtually endless and characters already included were done really well.
The fighting mechanics are solid (even in modes that don't involve teamwork). The absence of a block and grab mechanic promotes a more offensive fighting dynamic. There's a lot to love about this game and it's off to a great start!
I encourage naysayers to give it a shot if you haven't already.
@TheMelodiusRose
Wow you finally admitted you were wrong about something! I'm proud of you. But why are you calling it a dead horse considering you kept doubling down on that claim throughout this entire comment section? It's not like what I was correcting you on was irrelevant.
Also yeah I would the switch would have better versions of games compared to consoles almost 20 years old... but even then if what you were claiming was even somewhat accurate then why aren't the ports of last gen games dramatically better compared to the ps3 and xbox 360 versions?
Let's look at Skyrim for example, the resolution for the switch version is only 900p and the framerate is still the same 30fps on each version. Or more objectively, just compare the specs.
Can you even cite a single tech expert that states the switch is that many times more powerful than the ps3/xbox 360 or is asking for evidence expecting too much from you?
I don't think this part of the argument will be case and shut since we can mostly just argue with anecdotals like "everyone does x or y". But we can look some data provided from surveys like for example a while back what mode people use more for the switch between portable and docked. And IIRC the results were either 50/50 or slightly leaning towards the switch. Furthermore I could point out the fact that many switch commercials/ads put heavy emphasis on the portability factor, heck that was one of the first things shown in it's reveal.
It's sales in Japan - where portables have historically sold well also proves my point, it's the best selling console in Japan now iirc, surpassing even the 3ds and ds.
[Second half of my reply since it was too long]
Buddy, you have been consistently proven wrong on how those 10 year old consoles are stronger than the switch.
Now to clarify in case you backpedal again the consoles in that point I was specifically referring to were the Xbox one and Ps4 which are almost 10 year olds consoles and are objectively more powerful than the switch looking at the specs and ports.
Hopefully you were just mixing them up with the 7th gen consoles (ps3, xbox 360) and not contradicting yourself for lord knows how many times now.
Secondly you said they were stronger despite being shown otherwise multiple times. Repeating yourself in caps doesn't make you any less wrong than you are. It makes you look foolish instead, same with how talking louder doesn't bring your point across.
I will give you the benefit of the doubt this time and assume you mixed up console generations; now obviously the switch is more powerful than the 7th gen but I'm trying to say it's not by that much as you're making it out to be, yes its closer to an xbox one than it is to a ps3 but even then it's not dramatically stronger as you're making it out to be if you were to compare the specs I'll post later in this reply.
...Yeah you clearly pulled that 99% out of nowhere.
Sure most indie games run fine but what about modern games?
Most of the time the switch version either takes a significant resolution dip to compensate, halves the framerate, or in a lot of instances both.
Doom is very blurry and runs at 30fps, Wolfenstein too.
Overwatch also only runs at 30fps when everywhere else is 60fps.
Can you name some switch ports that are superior to the competition that aren't indies or games multiple generations behind?
And what would that be? It's kind of hard to tell what you're referring to when you been spouting stuff this entire comment section...
And before I forget here are the specs for the consoles:
@OrtadragoonX
yeah the price and heat aspect definitely sound like it would be an issue with something like that.
though it is reassuring to see just how far those kinds of chips have come since it means that even if a theoretical switch 2 doesnt use the highest end ones it would still offer a significant upgrade
though as mentioned prior hopefully when the chip shortage has improved.
My vote would be Smash. Even though Multiversus has the likes of Superman, Shaggy, and even Bugs Bunny. Smash has original Nintendo characters like Mario, Pac-Man, heck, even characters from other companies like Sonic and Mega Man. Smash even had a voting poll for what characters the players would like to be in Smash.
