We've been talking about Masahiro Sakurai a lot recently, haven't we? The creator of Kirby and Smash Bros. has started up his own YouTube channel, where he's already amassed over 200,000 subscribers, and he's already released one video about 'hit stops'.
Sakurai has also started a miniseries on the channel called 'Game Concepts', which is where the game designer will talk about the games he worked on and how he came up with the concepts for each one. His first video focuses on Kirby's Dream Land — which is the first game Sakurai directed.
The video is a lovely look back at just what inspired Sakurai to create the pink puffball, and he talks about why he made the game easier in an era where video games were more difficult, and the fact that he wanted Kirby to 'fly' because he thought it would be too harsh to lose a life for simply missing a jump (looking at you, Castlevania).
But Sakurai drops one amusing tidbit early on in the video. Kirby's most-recognisable skill is the ability to suck up enemies and take on their powers. The latter part didn't come until later, but in Kirby's Dream Land, he could still suck up enemies and spit them out — and that's how he defended himself. But Sakurai admits that he originally wanted Kirby to use his tongue to grab the enemies rather than by deeply inhaling.
Sakurai goes in depth about the "risk and reward" side of using enemies to your advantage, comparing the puffball to Mega Man — who doesn't use enemies per se but does get their abilities. But the director wanted there to be an easier way to use enemies rather than just getting their skills as rewards, and he wanted Kirby to use his mouth:
"At first, I wanted Kirby to use his tongue to grab foes, but in the end, I decided to have him inhale them and spit them out. The tongue idea might make you think of Yoshi, but this was back before Yoshi existed."
Perhaps Yoshi has Kirby to thank for his adept tongue-grabbing skills! And we assume that Sakurai is talking about the design and creation phase of Kirby, as Yoshi would debut first in Super Mario World.
We're not sure Kirby would still retain that adorableness if he grabbed enemies with his tongue — not that eating them by sucking them up is any less terrifying or weird, but it's synonymous with the little fella at this point. We couldn't imagine Kirby any other way!
Kirby's Dream Land just recently celebrated its 30th anniversary, along with the entire Kirby series, so the timing of this video is perfect. You can watch Sakurai's full video below, which is a short and sweet five-minute rundown of the philosophy behind the original Game Boy game.
The next video will be all about 1993's Kirby's Adventure, so we wonder what we might learn about the NES game when Sakurai decides to upload the next chapter in his Game Concepts series.
What did you think of the video? Are you surprised Sakurai wanted Kirby to use his tongue? Float on down to the comments and let us know!

Outside of copying Yoshi in Smash Bros, I don't know how I'd feel about Kirby using his tongue like that.
Though doesn't the character Gooey do that? Or something? I'm not overly knowledged in my Kirby shenanigans.
I suppose from a gameplay point of view that Kirby would have used his tongue in the same way he uses his arms in Kirby's Epic Yarn or how Gooey uses his in Dream Land 3.
@Yosher Yep, it's Gooey the one who uses his tongue to swallow his enemies. Though I believe in Star Allies he uses it more as a Whip.
Actually, wouldn't Yoshi be first anyways? Super Mario World came out in 1990/91, while Kirby's Dream Land came out in 92.
That's an image I didn't want to imagine today yet here we are.
Did you know?
Kirby inhales his enemies, and makes it later in the day.
As a retro Kirby fan, I gotta say, this whole youtube thing is a dream come true! To have the og director just talk about his work is AWESOME. Truly this 30th anniversary for Kirby has been amazing for me. It's the year that keeps on giving for a Kirby fan.
I didn't want to have pleasant dreams for the rest of my life anyway.
@HammerGalladeBro Thanks! I thought so, but I wasn't sure.
Speaking of Kirby and Yoshi, in Kirby's Dream Land 2, Kirby not only could inhales and copy enemy's techniques but he also had 3 animal buddies he could ride similar to how Mario ride Yoshi in Super Mario World or the animal buddies from the Donkey Kong Country trilogy. For some reason them animal buddies never make a return in future games ever again, not even in Super Smash Bros., a game that celebrates all things Nintendo. Oddly the DKC animal buddies also never appear in Super Smash Bros. either, not even a cameo. Nintendo has not been treating the Kirby and DKC universe with the same kind of respect as the Super Mario universe.
Oh cool, I first played Kirby 30 years ago! Thanks for making me feel old, Sakurai.
@Serpenterror the animals are in Kirby’s Dream Land 3! There are even more to ride. Pretty sure it’s on the virtual console.
@Serpenterror Animals are out because riding has evolved into players being able to just ride each other. So kirby can just get on King Dedede's back in Return to Dreamland or any of his friends in Star Allies for a ride.
The animal friends are also mentioned as spirits and show in Smash events such as the Gameboy event showing Gameboy spirits and including Kine from DL2.
I think there's only so much you can do with riding and it's sort of been done already. It was used again in Planet Robobot as the Robobot instead of animals.
Kirby can honestly just do a lot on his own without having to rely on animals as much anymore. Give him wing or jet ability and he can just fly, etc without the middle man. Still I understand fans might just miss the particular characters. Folks can check out Star Allies if they are just interested in some fanservice since they are straight up playable in that game.
@kurtasbestos I'm sure he feels the same talking about it lol.
@kurtasbestos let me quote what Sakurai himself said once: "Everyone is getting old"
The idea of every single videogame having an Easy Mode is utopian, it doesn't work, shorter games can easily have the option for Easy or Hard, but in many games, that's not viable, there are games where just one difficulty is better, it doesn't need to be super easy or super hard, plus, the idea of giving everyone an Easy Mode for "accessibility" to help disabled people is mostly asked by people who just suck at videogames, I support ideas to help more people play videogames, like colorblind modes and adaptive controllers, but making them easier is not necessary.
This is why I totally support easy games like Kirby, even though Kirby games are very easy, it's still one of my favorite series, Kirby games don't need a Hard Mode either, beginners at videogames as a whole need to play Kirby.
@victordamazio hey Dreamlnd had an awesome Extra mode which IS harder.
Kirby games have always included some challenge. Either post game or within the design. Such as having an enemy with ball ability appear before an area with many more pitfalls. Coaxing the player to DARE cross while maintaining a bounce if they so dared. It just never forced it because the games aren't about excluding new players and I love that about the series.
Especially when games were so notorious for design choices made to pad for time, compete with rental times, or suck up your quarters.
Truly stands out.
Glad Kirby is a sucker not a licker..?
Even though Sakurai thought about it first for Kirby, Yoshi is still officially the first tongue user in 1991 before Kirby was really "born" in 1992. It's for the best. Picturing round, little Kirby sticking out a giant tongue way too big for his body is one bizarre picture. Just leave it to Gooey.
@NatiaAdamo It was most likely planned before Super Mario World was in development when Sakurai thought of Kirby Grabbing enemies with his tongue
"We couldn't imagine Kirby any other way!"
Just play Smash and copy Yoshi, and then you'll see it.
