I just hope they build upon this engine for Switch and sort out the (IMO) dreadful input lag. Going from 60fps to 30fps was a little painful, but going from low input lag to really high was the killer for me.
Did the lag bother anyone else? I never saw much complaint about it. It felt like I was moving a tank when getting a player to turn on a dime!
@LikelySatan Haha yeah! Reminds me of back in the day, when I’d shoot explosive barrels in games on my low-end PC and cause it all to turn into a slide show!
@LikelySatan Dumb question, but have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game? I am surprised more aren’t complaining if it’s like that! Could be a bad install, maybe?
Yeah, Quake 1 feels like an arcade shooter, so fast and fluid! Both 1 and 2 are amazing ports.
Looking forward to seeing more from Nightdive! But I had hoped to also hear about them fixing that broken Bladerunner port…really wanted that, loved it back in the day on PC.
@LikelySatan Wow, I’m glad I held off buying it (mainly down to no gyro). You’re right, I’ve not seen many complaints in reviews about frame rate, what a shame!
Have you tried the Quake II remaster? That is 99.9% locked 60fps and looks stunning to boot!
Okay, I finally cracked! Told myself all day I can get this game in a future sale, since I still have the expansions in Quake 1 to get through! But this review, along with the SwitchUp review made it Day 1(ish).
Even at full price this is a serious steal! I already have Quake 2 on Steam so got the upgrade for free anyway, but to have this, Doom 1-3 & 64, Duke Nukem 3D, Ion Fury and a few other classic FPS games is fast making the Switch my favourite console ever. I say this growing up in a somewhat golden age (imo) of gaming in the 90s.
Really wanted to get this on Switch day-one, as it looks amazing. But no gyro is a big shame. Gyro really elevated Quake and Ion Fury for me, felt superb in handheld.
Nice to see it getting so much support from the devs though, the PC version is beckoning me, if gyro definitely isn't happening for it on Switch
Likely an unpopular opinion but for playing with the Mrs or friends in the same room, the Joy-Cons really are great. Quick to switch them into single or joint use for games like Switch Sports, works ALMOST as good as the Wiimote for gyro (really wish there was an infrared though, to be fully accurate), and light to hold.
The D-Pad is terrible for anything serious, and drift has cursed me a few times. But for us, the Switch is used mainly as a fun co-op gaming machine
@Teksetter Take it easy, styes on the eyelid are brutal, used to get them a lot when I was a teen. I would recommend once that heals, get yourself some J&J No More Tears and wash your eyelids with that and very warm water regularly, especially if you feel they're not smooth to the touch.
Trying to finish up the third ending to Automata, breaking that up with bouts of ARMS and Switch Sports Golf with the Mrs and some Crazy Taxi and Killer is Dead on PC
@WhiteTrashGuy Me too, 60fps would be the game-changer for me. Playing the original was tough even back in the day (lows of single-digit FPS on 4-player split screen iirc!). But still a classic, regardless.
Been a good year for us on the Switch. Switch Sports getting the golf update brought us back HARD, enjoying it much more than expected. The new MK8 courses have kept us checking in on that game too and the backlog of shame is keeping me busy inbetween too. And Nier: Automata running pretty much flawlessly was a nice surprise.
I think if you own another console or PC (I have a decent PC), the Switch can be a fantastic companion away from a desk and with friends or family on the big screen. It’s showing its age, but still a cracking little system that could.
Have many of you been playing Switch Sports Golf? Been having a blast on it, the controls work well and there’s a lot of replay value with the 21 courses and wind affecting your shots.
Dug out a game from way back in my Steam backlog called Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. Great game so far, based on the Chinese story of the Monkey King, it helps that I love that story too!
Dusting off my copy this week just to play this! Sounds awesome! As fun as the crazy levels often can be, I had a hankering for some good ol’ fashion Mario platforming fun!
@MattAllsopp Yep, I am the same, and don’t even get me started on my PSN and Steam backlog haha. I think I will have plenty to keep me busy in my retirement years 😂
@MattAllsopp Thanks for the reply. Yeah, the price is low at least, though I think I'll wait until they properly patch it then. Nightdive are pretty good at supporting their releases and my backlog isn't getting any shorter XD
It really would be great to hear opinions from people who have the game on Switch as I would LOVE to get this on the go. Almost bought it day 1!
Heard that the other versions had been patched already but haven't really heard if they fixed much on the Switch version yet, or if they even planned to. Could anyone confirm if it is running better these days? Sounds like it is a still a work-in-progress.
Gave it a go last night after not touching it since its release and it DOES feel much better now, the gyro aiming is more responsive and it feels closer to the Wiimote now, not perfect, but finally playable.
We still keep HotD 2 & 3 on the Wii for our proper arcade-fix though. I do wish the Switch (or maybe Switch 2.0) could have a sensor bar accessory, the IR tracker in the right Joy-Con might be usable with that tech.
@Hikingguy Yeah, that would be the dream I do think Nintendo need to add more full games into the NSO Expansion, maybe some of their older games from 2017-2018, perhaps?
As others in this comment section have mentioned, giving out expansions to games isn’t great if you don’t have the game to begin with.
Nintendo missed a trick not putting a portion of Switch Sports on the NSO Expansion pass. If they made maybe 2 of the sports available to try, I am sure it would tempt more people to check out the subscription, and even add a few more sales to the full game off the back of more people getting to try it!
I don’t know how this game passed me by, looks great and reminds me of Colin McRae 2.0 back on the PS1. Definitely on my wish list now, especially due to these glowing comments here!
Still weep at Impossible Lair...that final level, I just didn't have the patience for it. Fun game overall and ran great on the Switch, but didn't blow my mind.
@Nameless_Shame Indeed, for every great SE game released, they seem to want to balance it out with a load of bad releases
Live-A-Live does look good, and I’m enjoying the FFVII:R quite a bit too on PC. Still a fan of the company, but choose to wait for reviews before buying from them these days.
On Switch playing through GTA: Vice City, some Mario Kart 8 online (still waiting for a few new courses to show up in online selection). Had a little go of EarthWorm Jim 2 on NSO and wow, it’s a tough game, dunno how I beat it so easily as a kid!
On PC I’m trying to finish Final Fantasy VII Remake
Excited for this, had a blast with the online test demo! Great to see the bowling sport getting fleshed out with trick lanes, I wonder if the ‘100 pin’ challenge will make a comeback? Loved the satisfying audio cues when knocking down 100 pins on the Wii version
Earthworm Jim 2! That’s a great addition to the catalogue! Loved the 1st and 2nd games back in the day, and the cartoon series too, anyone remember that?
@DanijoEX Agreed, this can be like how Mario has 3D and 2D adventures throughout the series. Perhaps they could even mix it up and have 2D parts in the 3D games, like how Mario Odyssey did
I think I’ve only ever pre-ordered firstly party games from Nintendo, and even then I’d rather wait.
The backlog of shame isn’t getting any smaller, so I’d rather only purchase games that run and look good on the console, waiting for reviews from SwitchUp and of course NL And from the lovely people in the comments section!
A neat little addition, definitely helps when me and my better-half wanna game on something and get fatigued from the massive list of games and icons - option paralysis! Now I can just filter only the games we play together
I caved and bought GTA: Trilogy during the sale today, playing GTA3 in portable and it’s running and looking pretty good so far! Playing them in order but I’m extra excited for Vice City
Also playing through the extra mission in Doom 3, had held off on it until I got the OLED, it sings on that screen!
@TheBigK Being in China, I often get paired with those Waluigi, Wiggler dudes from Japan and like you, I get middling (and often soul-destroying) placing Sometimes it’s 11 Waluigi’s and 1 Mario (it’s-a me!)
@Patendo Same! This was Day 1, until they went silent for half a year, then released this trailer with no particular details about the Switch version. My fear is that they either dropped the gyro controls, or they’re just terrible to use..hoping it does turn out okay though.
@Specter_of-the_OLED I’ve still got my Hand Cannon for bouts of shooting fun on the Wii. Wish the Switch had a comparable catalogue of light gun games as the Wii did. HotD 2, 3 & Overkill, Sin & Punishment, Ghost Squad, Gunblade NY to name a few of the highlights Plus the Wiimotes worked a treat!
@Guitar_bard Congrats on the anniversary ~ And gah, I’m jealous, gave away my old GBA SP and still pine for its small form factor and smart design, a great little system! Plus the backlight was a big bonus back then
Playing through Xenoblade Chronicles DE, already 12hrs in. Had always wanted to play the original game after enjoying XBC2 & the expansion.
XBC1: DE runs much better than XBC2 did in handheld, so much so that I haven't felt the need to dock it so far. Looks great on the OLED too, couldn't help myself and got one a few weeks ago
@Snatcher Yeah, new poses and maybe some extra options for assessories etc for the Miis would be VERY welcome. There’s a simple charm to them, I hope Nintendo don’t do away with them!
@Anti-Matter Yeah, I prefer the Mii avatar too. Wish they’d make it so we could use our Mii avatars in combination with some of these borders and frames.
I think it took me around 90hrs in total to get to the end credits. I got most of the towers and explored a fair amount of the map in that time, but those Korok seeds They can do one!
It didn’t keep me gripped throughout (I took some time off from it for a year or so) but it was a good gaming experience overall.
Just upgraded my OG Switch to an OLED last week as a Bday gift to myself
The OG model is still going strong after 4 years of use, no damage to the console, but had to swap out some sticks in the joy-cons due to the dreaded drift. It’ll mainly be docked from now on unless the Mrs gets an urge to pick it up!
@blindsquarel Feeling exactly the same, it appears to be a great game and the demo was a lot of fun, but compared to Wii Sports Resort (which we still play occasionally) it’s very barebones.

@PBandSmelly I hope it does come back! The game had some great mechanics and it was easy to show people the basics and get involved. It’s just a shame it all felt a little undercooked, especially at launch.
I agree with the characters being interesting and charming. The design team put a lot of love into them
Been blasting through the first Quake expansion after finally beating the main game. Mixing it up with Inside which I grabbed on a sale today. Probably stick on some Mario Kart 8 with the Mrs in anticipation for the new DLC too
Funny that it appears the physical cart will be available on Switch from a gaming shop I use in Shenzhen (China) this weekend. Probably imported from Hong Kong. So I guess Rockstar are still kicking it out the door in this state, are they?
@setezerocinco I managed to squeeze mine into the dock somehow Though now the dock is a little loose if I did not have the grip on. Doesn’t bother me too much though as the grip itself feels amazing and worth the trade-off for me personally.

Re: Nintendo Switch Sports Free Basketball Update Now Live, Here's What's Included
Excited to try this tonight. Hopefully it compares favourably to the clever basketball mini game in ARMS (which is just great IMO).
We still jump on the Switch Sports Golf mode from time to time, that was a great addition too!

Finished Quake II 64 and now playing through the big daddy Quake II, which runs like butter and is a blast to play!
Planning to play a bit of Kirby and the Forgotten Land with the Mrs too, such a relaxing, inventive and fun game!

Not really playing much else this week, a bit of Switch Sports with the Mrs and that’s my lot
