Since Nintendo introduced its higher-priced Expansion Pack tier to the Switch Online service, it's continued to bolster it with more DLC offerings and retro content.
The latest addition just the other week was the Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion. It's now updated the official 'Switch Online + Expansion Pack - Overview Trailer' with some extensive footage of this downloadable content that is now accessible through this subscription, provided you've got access to Splatoon 2.
"Active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members can now enjoy the Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion DLC on the Nintendo Switch system at no additional cost.* It’s a great way to train up before the Splatoon 3 game launches for Nintendo Switch!"
Nintendo normally provides some hints as to what's next in these Expansion Pack trailers, and this latest trailer also seems to reconfirm that Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and Pokémon Snap will be the next games added to the N64 library.
This latest trailer follows on from an update to both the Nintendo 64 and Sega Mega Drive / Genesis services recently.
- Mario Golf Now Available On Switch Online's Expansion Pack
- Three Sega Genesis / Mega Drive Games Have Been Added To Switch Online's Expansion Pack

Pokemon Snap! Kirby 64! What a duo of upcoming N64 drops
Too bad YouTube took away the dislike button, it was nice making their first uhh "trailer" one of the most disliked videos ever.
I’m getting close to buying NSO EP. With me getting back into Splatoon 2, having Octo Expansion in there is nifty for at least a year. I’ll probably wait until the N64 Controllers go back in sale.
@SteamEngenius Really one of the most dumbest thing ever, and there reason might have made sense if youtube didn't make it so you could see the dislikes on your own video!
looks adoringly at unspent $30 in wallet
That’s my kinda bang for my buck!
Needs more Gamecube, Gameboy Advance, and Gameboy/Gameboy Color. Thanks.
@90sRetroGaming : That would crush me inside because I want to actually own those games, so, a few physical compilations would be preferable.
With regard to GameCube, the games would be much too large for a dedicated app, unless of course Nintendo allows for the games to be downloaded individually.
Shame I still couldn't care less about anything Splatoon- related.
@Vix Splatoon is great! I felt the same way you did then felt like trying it when it was on sale for 25 bucks.
I'm still worried about the subscription model, I'm sure a lot of people prefer being able to buy one or two retro games that they like and could keep forever.
Wow, this looks like a great service! And look, no dislikes on YouTube! Now I must pay $50 a month for this subscription service, because we all know how trustworthy Google/YouTube is 😀👍
@SteamEngenius There's still a dislike button (I looked). They just don't show the number of dislikes. I still think Nintendo can see the number of dislikes.
@WoomyNNYes But if you cant see it, is there really a point? Its not like nintendo is going to come out and say how many dislike they have, nor is anyone on the platform for that matter.
@Snatcher I think Nintendo, or creators, can still see the dislike number, as it's still a metric they keep track of. They hide the number to avoid feeding trolls. edit, if they axed the dislikes completely, there's be no reason for the dislike button to remain.
I don't have Splatoon so this one isn't for me. So far none of the DLC has enticed me into buying expansion pack; I was done with ACNH by the time the dlc came out and am brand new to mk8 so don't really need that DLC. I also still don't really like the idea of renting DLC.
I could imagine them eventually bringing enough standard games to make me want to the service, but so far they haven't, especially with me already owning Mario64 and a lot of the sega games on Switch.
Mediocre service in general.
@Snatcher You can? That’s so INSANELY stupid, what are they trying to accomplish?
More Trash for your Cash!
Enjoying those 10 Happy Meals I afforded not spending it on a glorified rental service.
Cool. So Dlc for games you may not own is not a terribly great package. I'm sure at some point it will cross into that territory of being worth it, but every week it's still so far away. I bought Happy Home because it wasn't worth to get the expansion pack. Then by the time they offered the Mario Kart booster, it still wasn't worth it because I already bought AC DLC so I just got the Booster on its own. And now I don't have Splatoon 2....
It’s still a waste of money. Buying individual games on VC and playing for free was far better.
I’ll still stick to the standard $20 NSO subscription thank you very much.
@GameOtaku Yeah but for $50 per year that's a lot of bang for your bucks especially since all the NES, Super NES, Sega Genesis, and N64 games that you could play for free online or offline had larger lineup of games now.
This giving away the expansion but requiring ownership if the game strategy aggravates me. I'll just keep paying $20 a year to play splatoon online, that's all I really wanted it for.
Random critique, but I don’t like their graphic. The Genesis icon should be at the top with 64, and all three dlcs should be at the bottom so it all matches.
@BabyYoda71 Yes, it’s so stupid, I just couldn’t believe it, I was fine with it till I heard that, there whole mindset was too keep trolls from disliking videos, and avoid bullying, but did people really just go around in raids and disliked videos? That must have to have had them take the numbers off.
@WoomyNNYes Well yeah, Nintendo can still see it.
Why even bother making a new trailer at this specific point? Because they added a DLC that they know has already sold as much as it will before the replacement game this year? They haven't even finished releasing the stuff they announced at launch because it's been a drip feed! I could maybe understand if it was multiple DLCs for old games being added, like Splatoon 2, FE Warriors, Pokken DX, & Xenoblade 2, and they had already released the ones announced at launch and went 'here's the next batch'. The service would still be a punchline, but at least there'd be a reason to make a new trailer.
There's so many things big and small they could do to make the base NSO & Expansion Pak worth it or at least more appealing, but they don't. From their lack of trying I'm forced to assume since nothing is going back into these services they exist sole to swindle the fanbase.
I feel a great disturbance in the algorithm.. the dislikes, they're coming.
@WoomyNNYes Yes the creators can see their own dislikes. When I dislike a video youtube tells me that my feedback was shared with the creator.
Nintendo missed a trick not putting a portion of Switch Sports on the NSO Expansion pass. If they made maybe 2 of the sports available to try, I am sure it would tempt more people to check out the subscription, and even add a few more sales to the full game off the back of more people getting to try it!
@WoomyNNYes they didn't axe the dislike showing because of "trolls"
they axed it because people stopped swallowing the utter BS being posted by official media and government.
people started waking up, so big tech is taking more measures to control the narrative. that is 100% what it's about, no matter what lame excuse they use.
Despite fond memories, I haven't really got into any of the N64 titles so far. The DLC packs have made it worthwhile for me though.
@Specter_of-the_OLED
Not really appealing to someone who doesn’t play online and has limited access to the internet. I’m just interested in the classic games and the ability to play them anytime I want without a internet connection being required and no time limit.
Throw in gamecube with skies of arcadia and im in. Although at this point it looks like gamecube is either too hard for them to emulate or is being saved for the next generation switch.
@Kintypoo121
I like your idea, but take it a step further. Include the entire Switch Sports game.
Similar to packing in the original Wii Sports with the Wii, if Nintendo really wanted to "sell" the expansion, they should have considered including the entire Switch Sports game with the expansion. Including the entire game MAY have made me take a second look.
If everyone in my family plan would have wanted to play it, I think I could have been convinced. But, as of now, I have very little reason to fork out $80 year after year after year for what they offer.
@PeteW It's been similar for me. I think it'd be easier to get into them with an N64 controller, I wish Nintendo would restock! I only want one...
The expansion was not a price bump i wanted to support.
Literally the only game they could add to this that would make me slightly interested is Snap. I only have it cause I'll probably just save more than buying all these DLCs indivudually
This is starting to look like a decent deal, only problem is I don't have any of the games that the dlc is for
@Hikingguy Yeah, that would be the dream I do think Nintendo need to add more full games into the NSO Expansion, maybe some of their older games from 2017-2018, perhaps?
As others in this comment section have mentioned, giving out expansions to games isn’t great if you don’t have the game to begin with.
Still a bad value in my opinion, the N64 games come way too slow.
I already had the Octo DLC and I also bought the Mario Kart Expansion stand alone.
its getting more.
Kirby time is Happiness time.
...Yeah I'm still not getting it...>_>
It adds more value, I'm intrigued to see what N64 games come after Pokemon Snap and Kirby 64.
Hopefully 1080 Snowboarding, Waverace and Pilot Wings 64 could make a return...
@shoeses they didn't make new one, just slightly updated one, which is logical, since you want to show your complete offer... And that offer might not be interesting to you, but with all the dlc now in it, it has become interesting enough for me... (although i did buy the expansion in a sale last year..)
Still along way off from hooking me, Nintendo!
You need to add FE3H dlc and Zelda BOTW dlc and all future dlc packs for any 1st party release.
Better N64 titles.
And to guarantee 100% purchase, add Sega Saturn and Dreamcast, and Nintendo GameCube.
This is great and everything, BUT, the Nintendo 64 Switch controllers have been sold out now for 7 months… why is no one talking about this? I can’t wait to play some of my favourite 64 games again but can’t do so without the controller.
I dislike to show Nintendo I don't like the service. Removing the dislike counter is to stop hate campaigns but the counter is still visible to Nintendo.
Less of a bang. More like a dripple.
Oh I had no idea the Octo Expansion was added to the service recently. That's friggin awesome, I always wanted that expansion, but not quite enough to purchase it. But I have been paying for the Expansion Pass online service, so now I can play it, and that's pretty cool.
Already got the octo expansion
@Snatcher They came from the angle of "protecting creators" but my dislikes have only gone up since the button disappeared. Before the button went away my karaoke song videos had a 99.7% likes/dislikes ratio. Now it's 98.8%. Seems like a low number to be complaining about, but looking at it from the other end, it's four times as many dislikes as before the button went away.
@Bret Probably because at the time, if a bunch of people disliked it already, then there Person knows already, but I feel like this change if anything makes people want to dislike more.
Already subbed the day the expansion came out but hey, more bang for my buck!
Been enjoying the n64 games so far, still haven't beaten Banjo Kazooie yet.
Are they gonna do this everytime they add something to the service? It's not bad but it's unnecessary.
Never owned an N64. As someone who is interested but not nostalgic to play it it's just not worth it. I'd rather pay £3.49 or even £5.00 a month rather than £50 in one lump sum. More affordable for me personally too at the moment.
Honestly at this point just considering dropping NSO altogether.
@Lord I think GameCube games will likely be ported. While PowerPC and Arm are miles apart, they’re both RISC-based architectures and it would make more sense to have them run natively than over an emulation layer. With GameCube controllers abound on the Switch, I wouldn’t doubt if Nintendo plans to start porting over games from the Wii and GameCube in some kind of collections.
Eh I might get the expansion pack, I need to re-new my online thingy soon and it would be nice to have the dlc for animal crossing
I'm in the usual spot in that i wish they handled the games like they did the DLC and offered the ability to buy them.
Also wish the app itself offered more options for things like screen size or controls
@90sRetroGaming i agree, but you said it in such a bitchy tone,i almost don't want to
I’d rather just spend my $50 on a handful of retro games I can KEEP, not pay yearly to play. Rentals of any kind have never interested me.
I stopped my sub last December and haven't missed it for a single second. I've yet to be tempted back into it. Maaaaybe if it brings in GBA stuff and way more updates. I love the SNES era but there's only a few cool games on NSO for it at the moment.
@Suess I mean, it really wasn’t in that kind of tone, but if that’s how you want to look at it, then it’s all fine and well. I was saying what the service needed, while at the same time, being playful with my comment. Kinda like a “k, thanks, bye”. Not a “They better add these to the service or else”.
Yuck and yak……… Me looking at a message…. is that it, sure you can’t add something else. Yes the expansion pack is garbage Nintendo life. So yes i can add something else.
I wouldn't mind seeing Wave Race 64 and Wave Race Blue Storm added.
Yugi: "Nintendo, what’s going on?"
Nintendo: "Even though the Octo-Expansion pack costs 20 bucks on the eShop, we’re going to make it more expensive by putting it on our crappy online service that has an expansion pack that costs 50 bucks."
Yugi: "OK, so, you’re a lost cause."
It's weird, and honestly kind of frustrating to me that they are now making older DLCs free with the pass. Many of us bought DLC in the last couple years, so adding pre-existing DLC to the pass is kind of a slap in the face to all of us. What's next, the SwSh DLC? Does Nintendo wanna slap all of those fans?
If they make more NEW DLC, and add that to the pass, that's fine. But these are things people purchased when Nintendo hadn't given any indication that they'd be included in a pass. Oh, hey, maybe they can put the first few waves of SSB fighters into there to piss off all the folks who bought those (but not the later ones, because people may not have bought them all already, right?)
@Kiyata "a handful" of retro games for $50? Someone hasn't looked at retro prices in a long while. Just about any game truly worth having from the SNES era is going to run $30-50 bucks minimum. Get into the truly great titles, and the prices get flat out exorbitant. A legitimate cart for games like Earthbound, Final Fantasy III/VI, Chrono Trigger, etc. are going to run you hundreds per game. None of this accounts for the fact that you need extra equipment to be able to play these old systems on most modern televisions, and if you want it to look decent without lag, that equipment can get pretty pricey.
I don't love the whole subscription model, I don't love it at all. I personally want to buy the games I want individually. But as someone who also collects legit SNES games and has gone through the trouble/expense of a nice setup for it... What Nintendo offers on their subscription is a steal of a deal for those who don't already have all the necessary hardware and game collection at their fingertips.
@Thehandsomedan everything you named is on the $20 annual subscription. The stuff they added to the $50 tier is literally a handful, at best. Furthermore just for myself, I actually own all those games and systems anyway. Having the convenience of playing them on the handheld switch would be nice, but it’s not worth $50. Not by a long shot.
Use m64p! Way more features than that Crappy NSO thing and you can play anything you want. It's free, people.
@Silly_G Just because you want physical compilations of like 3 GBC games for $30 doesn't mean everyone else does. And what makes you think the GameCube NSO app couldn't just have on-demand download of what you want to play? They don't have to make you install every game.
@symmy : No-one's suggesting that we pay $30 for three GB/GBC games; only that there is the option to buy them instead of merely renting them as Nintendo are currently monetising their catalogue titles.
And with regard to GameCube via NSO, did you not read that I had said essentially the same thing in my second paragraph?
@Silly_G not what i read
