Companies can charge what they want, and prices simply are going to increase. I get that. But I think a big part of why video games had been so inflation resistant, is because it's so dang hard to justify buying video games when my insurance, power bill, groceries, and interest rates are all increasing.
Video games are my escape from a harsh reality, but I will give that up first when money is tight. If these companies want to drastically shrink their consumer base because they want so desperately to squeeze every tiny bit of money from anyone who dares do business with them, that's their call. But I won't have any part in it. I did the same thing with smart phones when they all topped $1000. I just am not going to go along with that. And if that means I miss out on that generation of gaming, so be it. I've got a nice Switch backlog and a PS4 slim that I have thoroughly enjoyed.
I do hope Nintendo sees the value in being competitive and creative rather than whatever Sony is doing.
$399 makes the most sense, if it's a solid upgrade. If we're still talking right around the PS4 in terms of capability, I think it needs to be no more than $350.
I enjoyed Hot Wheels Unleashed from a few years ago. Definitely the best Hot Wheels game in almost two decades and possibly ever. It wasn't perfect, but I didn't really expect it to be. I'm excited to give this one a go as well.
If Nintendo games came down in price naturally like every other game, I wouldn't clamber as much for backwards compatibility. But if you're going to charge full price for 8 years for the same game even when a successor comes out, you're setting yourself up at some level to be almost obligated to offer backwards compatibility.
@RiasGremory Totally understandable and I know everyone sees things differently. But man, if one of the best games of all time is considered nothing more than DLC, I think the person saying it is throwing logic out the window in favor of trying to sound edgy and cool. At best it's pathetic. People may not love the game and that's fine, but calling it DLC is disingenuous and I think it really hurts the industry.
If someone truly believes TOTK is just BOTW DLC, they are proving how impossible to please they are as a gamer. If you can't appreciate what this game is and what it introduced, you will never be happy with or appreciate anything. It's no wonder the gaming industry has such horrible developers. They listen to the nonsense from some people and try to please them.
@GunValkyria Saying physical games are going away is only true because people accept it like you're admonishing us to do. We get hung up on it because collecting physical games is a huge part of the fun of playing games to some of us. If your preferred method of gaming was being ravaged, you'd probably also be a bit hung up.
@zool I used to think that too. The Original Xbox and the PS4 were two of my all time favorite consoles. Then I realized that "good graphics" wasn't specifically "realistic graphics." When I realized how much I appreciated fun games that were also attentive to the small details within the gameplay, I realized how good some of Nintendo's AAA games actually were. Mario Kart 8, Animal Crossing New Horizons, Luigi's Mansion 3, etc are all awesome. I don't think TOTK is all that great visually, even though it is one of my favorite games of all time. But to be able to play that game when I'm out and about traveling, it is so much easier to appreciate than it otherwise would've been.
@Arawn93 If you're being serious and consider TOTK to be DLC, you're unrealistic as a consumer. I rarely find myself defending the machine but a comment like that makes it pretty easy.
@Thomystic I'll gladly pay the increased price for a finished and deep game. It's only a problem for me when they increase the price and still release half baked products.
I bought Immortals: Fenyx Rising on sale at Best Buy a few months ago for $14.99 and haven't gotten back to it, but am looking forward to it at some point. I see some reviews saying it's great and it gets me excited to try it, and then I read tons of stuff saying it was terrible. I love Ancient Greek history and mythology and I'm fine with it not being better than BOTW as that would be a tall order.
@KBuckley27 If the next Nintendo Switch came out at the same time as the PS6 or the next Xbox, Nintendo would not be overshadowed. Unless the next gen Switch messed up the greatness that this current Switch has.
I bought one in the last restock a few weeks ago and it's been awesome. But I loved the N64 and the controller. It never bothered me at all and I got used to is, so it's perfect in my eyes.
@RenanKJ I agree that it's all about the games. You also make the point that new gameplay can't really be explored when the hardware meets it's limits but yet Tears of the Kingdom introduced some pretty insane new capabilities on a 7 year old console. I always feel like the hardware goes under utilized in video game generations, developers just lack the creativity to capitalize on it. Credit to Nintendo for being far better at this than most.
The game definitely needs DLC because I'm at 90 hours in and could easily spend another 75 ish hours of pure enjoyment but I will scream if Nintendo doesn't release MOAR content into this already wildly rich and deep game. I'm also still mad that Nintendo didn't give me more with Animal Crossing New Horizons. I spent $50 on that game and only got 700 hours of entertainment out of it. Typical Nintendo.
@6thHorizon I don't understand that. You've been disappointed since 2018? The number of hours that could be poured into the Switch console on games released just since 2018 alone is mind blowing, and I'm talking hours that you actually enjoy, not just theoretical. If someone can't find anything since 2018 in Nintendo's lineup that really excited them, I don't think Nintendo is for that person. I've been a Sony fanboy for the last 15 years and haven't owned a Nintendo console since the Wii (and even then I only had Wii Fit and Wii Sports) and even I am blown away at how good their catalog is. And I hate to admit it.
I'm not really set on my own way of reviewing games. Not that it matters, but I was deciding between a 9 and a 10 on this one. I hate to give a 10 because it feels like I'm saying no game can top it. But I also understand no game is perfect. If I could do a decimal point system I think I'd give it a 9.8. The only downsides for me is I really really really dislike Japanese animation and while they do pretty good with this one, some of the appearance of characters kinda bug me. But that's being nitpicky and it really doesn't matter all that much when compared to the bigger picture.
@JoeSooper It used to be your favorite series ever but now that it's an incredible game and better than it's ever been that's when you decide to get salty about it?
@RainbowGazelle I don't understand why people in the gaming world are so hell bent on trying to be cutting edge with their takes. You're sure Odyssey was a 'decent' Mario game? Most people have it in the conversation as the best Mario game of all time and the Mario franchise pretty much saved the video game industry. That's saying a lot more than you want to get attention for giving it credit for.
@Mojo292 If you're that sensitive to "spoilers" then you shouldn't be online right now. First off, this isn't a spoiler. Second, the way you choose to approach a game is your responsibility. You're like the vegan who asks the neighbor to close their window when cooking meat so you don't have to smell it. Jumping on a Nintendo website the week of a major release and getting upset about something like this is pretty funny and unrealistic.

@Rykdrew I'm not saying you shouldn't have an opinion or share it, but you're very very active on this comment board for someone who hates this style of game.
@Mauzuri I can see the argument for saying it's not the best game ever, but saying it's 6/10 is equally ridiculous if not more. If you can't see why it gets great reviews other than the shortcomings you mentioned, you can't be very critical of any other game developers who don't even put forth a fraction of the effort they did on Breath of the Wild.
@Dubcheezy That truly is their passion. I think they design games for the sole purpose of enforcing a new IP copyright. At least that's how it comes off. They don't seem like they enjoy their fans very much.
@aaronsullivan I totally agree that it's a factor, and it certainly counts in many ways. What I mean by my comment is that no consumer is looking at it that way, at least not enough to justify it as a "price drop" in the eyes of a manufacturer who is wanting to move product.
@chardir Inflation doesn't count. You can't talk about only inflation like aging hardware isn't a thing. If you do want to try to justify it using inflation, it still isn't enough of a drop considering the aging hardware. Also, consumers will never see it as a price drop, and while it might be somewhat of a valid point, it's not going to sell units which is the ultimate goal of Nintendo. Consumers see the same price tag and that's the end of it.
It's almost like Nintendo may need to consider a price drop for the first time in their lives. They're like the monkey that reaches through a small hole to grab some fruit but then refuses to let go of the fruit to free his hand.
