Re: Nintendo Switch OS Version 3.0.0 Is Now Live

JohnBlackstar

Never had issues with the HDMI in conjunction with my Sony TV. Only turned the TV on and switched inputs when it was meant to. From what I heard it was just a few tv models that were impacted so it is cool that Nintendo cared enough to patch it. I'm still waiting for an update that shows other system games my friends are playing. That would be cool to know one of my friends is currently playing on their Wii U so I can change over and play with them.

Re: Random: Atari Is Working On Its First Home Console Since The Ill-Fated Jaguar

JohnBlackstar

The Ataribox name is a terrible choice. Besides that I am intrigued. I'm an old man so my first home console experiences happened on the Atari VCS. For nostalgia alone I will follow where this story leads. I do remember my first day plugging in my NES though and being amazed at how much better the graphics were, but also highly confused how to play Super Mario Bros on the gamepad. I died so many times at the first goomba and jumping over chasms in 1-1. Now that game is like clockwork and it irks me if it is not emulated 100% accurately. Last though about Atari - I would love to see some of the classic artwork revived and games that live up to the vivid late 70's /early 80's artwork that made my youthful imagination soar.

Re: Editorial: Nintendo Went Its Own Way at E3 2017, and It Mostly Worked

JohnBlackstar

@Embassy Anything along the lines of Persona, Nioh, Yakuza, Nier Automata, or Cuphead. I'm not even saying I want those games on Switch, but for a studio to care enough about Switch to provide an exclusive experience on Switch with an established or new IP and not just ports and collaborations. All the third parties seem to be scared of the Nintendo curse where only Nintendo makes money on their consoles (except for Monster Hunter and Pokemon).

Re: Editorial: Nintendo Went Its Own Way at E3 2017, and It Mostly Worked

JohnBlackstar

What I learned from E3 is that the Switch will have very little third party support. I was really expecting to hear about some amazing third party titles instead of just ports and one collaboration. I do think the Switch will be more successful than the Wii U by far still. Although it is hilarious since it appears to be the Wii U all over again, but with better first party games and portability. I guess that was the lacking ingredients for the Wii U to be successful.

Re: Wolf Link amiibo Among Re-Runs Planned for North America

JohnBlackstar

@undead_terror

I can find you any Animal Crossing Amiibo you need. All the cards finally hit clearance so they are gone. The figures have been as low as $2 at stores here and just sit there. I don't think my local Walmart or Target have restocked Amiibo in two months or more. They have given up.

Re: Wolf Link amiibo Among Re-Runs Planned for North America

JohnBlackstar

@Kayfios
I missed out on the new round of pre-orders so I am in the same boat. I managed to pick up a majority of the anniversary releases from Japan for cheap before the game came out. I will probably pay some outrageous price to get the new ones. I'm still two divine beasts, 20 shrines, and hyrule castle away from beating the game so I have been saving my money since I have been progressing so slowly through the game.

Re: Nintendo Switch eShop Adds Charts Listing to Show What's Hot in the Download Store

JohnBlackstar

I would think full retail games would chart low because of the extreme lack of storage space on the Switch. I'm still holding off on getting a card for more space, but I have only downloaded Blaster Master Zero and I am Setsuna. Nice to see a chart feature, but I am still puzzled why there is not a better way to see all the games available. I had to use the search feature to buy Setsuna since it was one of the original downloadable titles.

Re: Hearthstone On Switch Is "A Good Discussion Worth Having", According To The Game's Designer

JohnBlackstar

@NEStalgia I agree with your points. If you look at ZombiU though it sold around 1 million units worldwide which was probably the most sales for a third party game on the Wii U. There is some demand there, but even Ubisoft said that sales were disappointing and not profitable. I could see Nintendo bringing a big franchise exclusive (at least timed) and it helping sales. I think without some sort of achievement system, lacking extensive online capabilities, and no apps they are going to struggle to get people excited to bring games to the system though. Developers are skeptical that users will buy in to the Switch beyond the regular Nintendo crowd that do not want to purchas their style games. Nintendo can't support another console solely on their own shoulders though unless they adjust their expectations.

Re: Hearthstone On Switch Is "A Good Discussion Worth Having", According To The Game's Designer

JohnBlackstar

@rjejr @sligeach_eire This seems to be what most developers are saying. I guess what makes the Agents of Mayhem comment troubling is that they don't even make it sound like Switch is worth talking about by following it up with, "we will look in to it if there is enough demand" like other developers have been giving us Hope with. Even the comments regarding Hearthstone are nebulous. Nintendo might need to do something crazy like put some money down for timed third party exclusives before we see another Wii U with slightly better sales. I write this with tears in my eyes because I truly do want Nintendo to succeed with Switch. (I believe they already have succeeded, but I realize they need profits too).

Re: Feature: The Best Nintendo April Fools' Day Gags of 2017

JohnBlackstar

@benbertoli your wife did an amazing job with that! I think it would have really fooled a couple of people for sure.

The plumbing gag for leaks was a good one and more of a true gag that shouldn't have stumped anyone.

The ARC one was fun to watch because it looks like that development team has a good group working there. The game looks a little boring, but I'll pick it up in May to find out for sure once I am done with Zelda, Blaster Master, and I am Setsuna.

Re: Nintendo Switch OS Version 2.1.0 is Now Live

JohnBlackstar

I called around to some buddies who are in the tech industry. Seems like TVs that skimped some on the chipset that operates the HDMI are having issues detecting the Switch properly (also can happen to other devices) and will change over even when it is not a proper wake up signal. If you look online it seems like all the issues are with certain manufacturers (LG, Samsung, Vizio, etc...) due to the chipsets they use to keep costs down. Seems like Switch could patch the system not to send out those signals triggering those chipsets. I'm sure they are working on it. Unfortunately most of the sets in Japan won't have this issue so it will probably have to get pushed by NOA or NOE.

Re: Nintendo Switch OS Version 2.1.0 is Now Live

JohnBlackstar

@stardust4ever @hordak I think you are both on different wavelengths. I'm not sure stardust4ever is understanding what you are describing since their TV doesn't support the new feature. I will say that mine works fine and it had never happened to me where it turns on and switches my tv over. Any ideas why it triggers it? I regularly play my Wii U on that same TV without issue. I have a Sony TV with four HDMI inputs (and some other various inputs).

Re: Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Players Are Finding Inventive Ways To Beat Its Toughest Enemy

JohnBlackstar

I beat my first Lynel today. It was easier than I thought, but not easy like they make it in the video. I only struggled with the end when I had his Life low and he kept jumping and striking. I had a two handed sword so it was hard to switch back and forth from my shield to parry his attacks. Otherwise I blocked most of his attacks. Granted it was a red one because I am only about 30 hours in and have only seen three Lynels on my quest. Being able to save right before fighting helps. It takes the pressure off.

Re: Poll: A Month of Nintendo Switch - Do You Think It's Heading for Success?

JohnBlackstar

The Switch will struggle in the West and at best be close to Xbox One sales if Nintendo can't get AAA third party support. So far developers and publishers are holding off and are verbally sharing they are holding off. That is never a good sign. Silence would have painted a better picture than hearing things like "No plans to bring the game to Switch", or "this game would be a struggle to bring to Switch".

Re: Nintendo Switch Is Selling Faster In Japan Than The PS4 Did, But Not As Quick As The Wii U

JohnBlackstar

I love my Switch and I hope beyond all hope that it will be successful for Nintendo. I'm not sure we will ever see Wii/PS2 numbers again now that cell phones and tablets are so popular, but at least some good sales. I do think the Switch will be more popular than the Wii U, but it really concerns me for the sales outside of Japan. Big publishers have yet to announce any major third party games even while Nintendo is securing more production. Some publishers have even gone on record saying they are going to wait and see, or they are not sure the hardware can handle their games. That is going to seriously hinder sales in the West if there is not major third party support. I just hope Nintendo keeps on supporting it with their amazing titles, but a bunch of indie games are not going to work.

Re: Nintendo Approached Cyanogen For Switch OS, But Was Told To "Stick It"

JohnBlackstar

It makes sense as @damo mentioned why they would have turned this offer down - it was not an open source solution that Nintendo was looking for. Also Cyanogen was looking for billions of users as their market share instead of millions. Every company has to set a goal and determine what their limited resources are going to be used for. It doesn't always mean they will choose right. That is the risk of business. Does Nintendo put resources in flooding the market with Switch consoles or something else? It is all a calculated gamble.

Re: Reggie Fils-Aime Says Nintendo is 'Fact-Finding' on Joy-Con Connection and Screen Scratching Issues

JohnBlackstar

@moon Are you using 5G? That will sometimes give you better signal strength, but does worse over distance. I have my Switch in the same room as my router and have noticed it lags at times. My Wii U was notoriously bad if I had it downstairs from my router also the PS3. Weaker/cheaper wifi adapters inside those units. Might be the same issue with Switch cutting costs.

Re: Reggie Fils-Aime Says Nintendo is 'Fact-Finding' on Joy-Con Connection and Screen Scratching Issues

JohnBlackstar

@razorthin Do the penny test on your dock and I bet you have a perfect shaped dock. I am extremely careful with my components. I still have flawless systems from when I was a kid because I save boxes, gently handle my hardware, and take care as to how things are stored. I still have no scratches on my screen, but I must lean the unit towards the back of the dock because my dock came warped out of the box. I can hear the plastic scraping each time. I believe this is a true issue for consumers who just slid theirs in and out on a warped dock.

Re: Axiom Verge Team Still Awaiting Approval for Nintendo Switch Release

JohnBlackstar

It is tough to read an article like this and know what is best. On one hand I don't want the Switch eshop to become a polluted cesspool like the 3ds and Wii U eshops, but I don't want games with good reviews getting missed. Hopefully Nintendo has a good plan on finding the right balance. If Voez gets the "ok" then so should Axiom Verge.

Re: Review: VOEZ (Switch eShop)

JohnBlackstar

I just hope the Switch doesn't become a treasure trove of phone and tablet games that you have to pay for like the Wii U. I don't seem to see as much garbage games lingering in the Playstation Store or Xbox Store. Is Nintendo just open door policy on these releases? Have a level of quality for what gets released in your eshop, Nintendo.

Re: Poll: Nintendo Switch Countdown - Less Than a Week to Go, Is the Hype Building?

JohnBlackstar

I'm excited for the Switch, but would be lying if I didn't say I was also disappointed. It definitely feels like a system rushed in to the marketplace because Wii U had failed so badly. No apps, not many games ready, launch line up is changing weeks before release, overall network is not established yet with no live date announced. I sure hope Nintendo can pull this off because I love Nintendo.

Re: Nintendo NY Store Confirms A 'Limited Quantity of Pre-Orders' for Nintendo Switch on 13th January

JohnBlackstar

Please no one delude themselves. I was able to preorder an Xbox One and a PS4 half a year before they came out with no difficulties. Both companies ran preorders for as long as they could meet demand and still have some limited stock for first day buyers at major outlets. Nintendo laughs in the face of logic and plays the rarity card and looks to have another failed console launch on their hands.
