@blindsquarel
It does look massive to be fair, and the gunfights and character roster looks like it does a much better job at capturing the spirit of the movies.
I’m in the boat of people who do care, as I don’t have access to online for PS4, and I would really prefer to play the game portably anyway. As a fan of Wipeout and other obstacle course style shows, I really want to give this game a go, as it sounds quite fun!
At this point, the Zelda games and Xenoblade X are the only two feasible remasters. Everything else basically needs the Wii U to function, unless I’m missing something with some of the more serious games on this list.
@BloodNinja I have no idea what I did to draw their ire, but at least I can say that I was no liar! A hearty thanks for the rhymes you send, but this wonderful exchange must come to an end.
@RubyCarbuncle
Legally it’s technically illegal to play these games on a ROM, but morally it’s not very forward thinking to not play a game when it is in no way available for purchase.
Or, to keep the hot streak going,
Although illegal this may technically be,
no problem in playing unavailable games do I see.
@onlyonemello Let’s hear it for English teachers that realize that video games are a plausible and necessary medium of storytelling!
As for me, I’ve never played this game before and don’t really think it’s my thing, but I’ve heard good things and am happy for the success it’s received.
There is noooooooooo way this is coming to Switch. Honestly, my extremely casual self would much rather play a remake of the Alpha games similar to what they did with 2 a few years back.
Wow, this is my first time being first!
I wouldn’t think that these games would make it worth it, particularly with the Live a Live and Detective Club remakes making the originals not worth the difficulty to find.
Edit: Never mind about that first sentence. Sigh…
@RupeeClock A game having planned expansions doesn’t make it unfinished, though. Xenoblade and Smash Bros, for example, are games that can more than stand on their own. The DLC is used to supplement the experience. The ones you could make the argument for, though, as they were pretty barren and lifeless without DLC are Mario Golf/Tennis, Pokémon Sword/Shield (to a lesser extent, as it is a functioning RPG on its own, just not a very good one), and Kirby (again, arguable). There might be a few more examples, but those are the few where the games need DLC to make it worth the asking price, not just simply having DLC.
This is quite sad, but it’s to be expected I suppose. Nintendo can’t keep the net code up and working forever, and they aren’t going to try. RIP Virtual Console, 3DS, and Wii U. You will be missed… Okay, maybe not the Wii U.
Way too slow a change, but it’s worth it for me now. Still needs a bit more DLC to make paying 50 dollars a year for it as opposed to 20 dollars once seem feasible, but I’m buying it for now because for one year it sounds nice.
Great list! Here’s some additional ones for me: -Rosalina’s Ice World (Incredibly generic name, but really fun track layout, and a great use of underwater) Rock Rock Mountain-(it’s just fun to fly in the air, and you can have really entertaining battles up there) Delfino Square- (really basic, but it’s just one of the best “mood” tracks around, as the track design is really smooth to drive through) Waluigi Stadium- (not quite as good as Pinball, but one of the most bonkers tracks I’ve ever raced in. Also, I need the version with half-pipes because that would be really nice) Ds or N64 Bowser’s Castle (both are some of the pinnacles of the series, with excellent track layout that really make you feel that you’re inside the lair of a monster)
Gonna try some Earthbound, and attempt to finish Shining Pearl if I have the time because I’m gonna buy Legends Arceus next week. Might play the demo fo Triangle Strategy if I have some time.
@octokid Yeah, and she appeared in an actual mainline Mario game, which cannot be said of Waluigi, as much as I like him. My theory is that Nintendo saw the backlash of the “Whatever!” line being cut from Mario Golf: Super Rush and decided, “All right, well how about no Daisy, then?”
It’s gotta be NSO support, most likely. I have a decent amount of faith that Nintendo will not put micro transactions in their games. I am kind of sorry for Daisy fans that she’s not in the game.
Excellent direct. Nintendo did a whole bunch of left-field Nintendo things. Fire Emblem Warriors was a great pick to start the show and should be fun for fans of the series. The Advance Wars stuff is pretty cool and makes it worth buying for me. Amazingly, every single one of the third party announcements was at least decent and didn’t last too long. Portal and No Man’s Sky in particular were highlights for me. Mario Strikers is an excellent revival of a series I didn’t think would be revived. It should have been Punch-Out, but this is fine too. Chrono Cross and Live a Live on Switch look cool for fans of the series. Switch Sports is okay and slightly better than 1-2 Switch, but I can’t help but feel that something is missing. Having an extensive Triangle Strategy demo is a good idea and makes me want to try it out. EarthBound is one of the last great games to be denied entry to the Nintendo Online platform, so that was pretty nice! Mario Kart DLC is amazing, and this essentially constitutes a Mario Kart game. I would have liked tracks that take advantage of the antigravity, or just new tracks in general, but it looks like just straight remasters, which is slightly disappointing, but it does add value to the Expansion Pack. Finally, Xenoblade 3 looks cool and makes me want to give the other games a shot on Switch. Overall, a great direct. No earth-shattering reveals except for Mario Strikers, but no real duds either. 8.5/10
This was just a fun direct for me. Nintendo was backed into a corner with existing IP’s, so I knew they had to release some stuff, and they did not disappoint. My favorite announcement has gotta be Mario Strikers. It’s one of the few Mario IP’s that I haven’t played, and I’m excited to give it a go on Switch.
@anoyonmus It’s kind of the principle of the thing at that point. I wasn’t dying to get it, and that just makes me not want to buy it. I won’t fault anyone that does buy it though, I hope they have a good time with the game.
I was all ready to buy this because I heard it was one of the best rhythm game franchises around, and it had me hook-line-and sinker with MEGALOVANIA and Zelda playing, but then I saw the dreaded subscription service. This is one of the worst trends in gaming and I will not support it.
@anoyonmus They pulled a 1-2 Switch by selling 6 bare-bones minigames, albeit with cool-looking motion controls and a leg strap, in a package that just doesn’t have the charm of the original. If they do package it with a Switch or Switch OLED like you said, it’ll be slightly worth it, and granted, I’ll probably buy this because my family likes sports games, but it’s not a great deal for 40 bucks. If it was 30 or even 35, I could see it, but this is 20 bucks more than Brain Age, which you could likely get much more playtime out of and is still enough for casual people to get. I just don’t see it, sadly.
Good on Nintendo for establishing a super-hard mode in their games. Whenever they instill masochism in a game (think the final level of later 3D Mario games) it’s one of the most nostalgic feelings ever. This isn’t quite there, but extreme difficulty stuff with Nintendo polish is always great.
This is the most Nintendo thing ever to do. The fact that they did not disclose the price makes me think that Nintendo’s about to pull another 1-2 Switch on us, sadly.
I’m so starved for a Mario Baseball game that I might actually purchase this. It’s been a while since I’ve played a proper baseball game, and this seems like a fine point to jump in.
I would really like a new Punch-Out game. Punch-Out Wii is one of my favorite games ever made, and the concept of a Nintendo-owned Next Level Games making a Punch-Out for the Switch would be one of my favorite things ever! Really, though, a few long-dormant franchises would be nice. We’ve seen literally every IP Nintendo likes to make on the Switch by now, let’s get some revivals.
Predictions: 20 minutes of the Direct will be already announced games, sprinkled throughout. To be fair, though 2022 is looking massive so far. We’ll probably see: -Kirby and the Forgotten Land: a similar trailer to the fall 2021 direct for Metroid Dread, just more stuff about the game. -Triangle Strategy: Brief trailer showcasing cool stuff in the game -Bayonetta 3 (or 4, idk and I’m not bothering to look it up): Gameplay explanation and stuff. Advance Wars: Short trailer explaining QOL improvements and confirming a release date in mid March. Mario and Rabbids Kingdom Battle: Story and Battle Breakdown, probably about 3-4 minutes of details, with a release date in September. Splatoon 3: Mode breakdown, including a much-improved and in-depth story, and a non time-locked Salmon Run, with a release date in July. BOTW 2: The next-to-last announcement in the Direct, with the gameplay and layout of the game becoming a bit clearer. At the end of the trailer, a big twist will be revealed, and the title will emerge, with a release date in December.
10 minutes will be B-Roll stuff, with some cool announcements. I don’t even pretend to know enough about the indie and other console circuit to make guesses here, so Fall Guys finally being confirmed is about all I got.
The other 10 minutes will be new reveals. The Donkey Kong game made by Nintendo will be revealed about midway through the direct, and it will not be 3D, but it will look really cool and people will buy it so they make more faster. The Nintendo team will then say that Platinum games helped them make this game, but Platinum was not able to make it entirely because they were working on Metroid Prime 4, and although they have nothing to report on that game, they do have something else planned: the Metroid Prime Trilogy for Switch, releasing in June. The graphic improvements to the games will not be enough for some, and they will complain, but it will sell a lot of copies. A new Punch-Out game will finally make its way to Switch, with a new 3-D mechanic where you remain in the place that you dodged to when you dodge, leading to angle-based boxing. The one-more-thing announcement will be, somewhat disappointingly, the Mario Movie trailer. It will surprise some people by being not terrible, but still hilarious enough to seem like a train wreck. Chris Pratt as Mario will be just as jarring as the memes suggest, but all the other characters actually sound really nice in their roles, and a semi-unique story will be told in the movie, with a story of Mario and Luigi quitting their plumbing job, finding a magic pipe, and exploring the Mushroom Kingdom.
