Update: EarthBound and EarthBound Beginnings are available now on the Nintendo Switch Online service. Shigesato Itoi, you wily old fox, you!
Here's some PR:
Join Ness, Paula, Jeff and Poo in their quest to fulfill an age-old prophecy to stop the wicked Giygas (and maybe catch a Runaway Five concert along the way) in the fan-favorite Super NES classic EarthBound. In addition, travel back to 198X for EarthBound Beginnings, a localized version of the original Famicom Mother game. Both EarthBound and EarthBound Beginnings are coming to Nintendo Switch Online ... later today!
And here's a special message from Shigesato Itoi:
Original Story [Wed 9th Feb, 2022 19:30 GMT]: Red alert: Shigesato Itoi, the creator of the Mother series, just tweeted about the Nintendo Direct happening later today, sending fans wild with speculation about the imminent surprise release of an English translation of Mother 3. Or an Earthbound port to the Nintendo Switch. There are no other reasons he would tweet about a Nintendo Direct, surely?
Well, he is also a retired game developer in his 70s, who probably enjoys watching video game reveals. And Mother 3 is about as likely as Half-Life 3 at this point, or Sakurai putting your mum in Smash Bros. Still, a fan can dream, no?
Let's pick apart that tweet:
The translation — according to Google — is "7am is amazing. It may be snowing."
7am is the time that the Nintendo Direct will go live in Japan, so that's not much of a hint, but "it may be snowing" could be a reference to Earthbound, a video game that has snow. But also, it genuinely might just be snowing in Japan tomorrow.
We love a good rumour as much as the next person, especially in the few remaining hours before a chunky Nintendo Direct, but this one doesn't have a lot of meat on it. It really just seems like a nice retired man getting a little bit excited about video games and the weather.
We're happy to be proved wrong, though.

I'm guessing it means nothing. At most maybe the first two games will be put up on NSO.
That said I'd totally love to have a Mother collection sometime or something. ... Even if you would kind of need to advise people not to judge it by the first game.
I think at best this means Earthbound gets a release on the SNES app. Maybe Earthbound Beginnings on the NES app. Nothing else. But feel free to dream!
A best case scenario Earthbound gets put on the NSO service.
If not then Nintendo fans are going to have to learn how to emulate
Stop it Kate. An Earthbound in the style of Link's Awakening would be a dream game, capturing the vibe of the travel brochure of the original SNES game pefectly. Could be they finally come to the online service...but would love some sort of remake.
I saw this earlier on and my exact thought was:
...
...
...
...oh no
Forgot about earthbound I started playing it on my snes mini & thought it was good
Mother ... tell your children not to - woops, wrong thing.
I hear good things, but never played any of them.
I like how Kate has done research and included the weather forecast in Japan. She's the site's top researcher and investigator!
probably nothing...
edit: Nevermind lol
Mother 3 but it’s an NFT
Don't get your hopes up, don't get your hopes up, don't get your hopes up, don't get your hopes u-... my hopes are UP!
Probably means he worked for Nintendo
@DiggleDog
Mother NFThree
"but "it may be snowing" could be a reference to Earthbound, a video game that has snow. "
....lol. This isn't doing the stereotype of "earthbound fans are always grasping at straws" any favours.
This man is making it hard to not get my hopes up
I feel like he just retweeted it. That's all. Doubt it means anything else.
Finally, Shigesato Itoi's No. 2 Bass Fishing!
Earthbound remake in the lines of FF7 remake. It's an action RPG with incredible graphics and it will be released in episodes, hence the snow. The first episode ends at Winters
Low probabilty: Earthbound Remastered or Mother 3 in English
Medium probability; Earthbound and/or Earthbound Zero in NSO
It means Earthbound Zero and Snes on NSO and Mother 3 in English and on GBA NSO cos that is coming and and and F-Zero Switch with track editor plus Metroid Prime 4 trailer and Metroid Prime Trilogy and Wind Waker Switch and Wario VB Land port and Wario Land 5 plus Wario Land compilation and Wave Race, 1080, Excite Bike, Mario Strikers and Mario Land 3 Proper and Pikmin 4 and Galaxy 3 but also Mario Bros 5 and erm Sim City but made by Nintendo and Demons Crest 2 and Unreal engine Ocarina of Time and a Switch Pro console that is competent with Joycons that you will never need to place and Microsoft doing Switch online cos Nintendo are clueless with online and a Waluigi game but also actually there is one more Smash character and its Waluigi and Mole Mania 2 and HAL Labs are doing a sequel to New Ghostbusters 2 and Gameboy Color Classic console and N64 NSO is competent now and your Wii, DS, 3DS and Wii U purchases will now be on Switch and Nintendo will release a blu-ray drive that plays GC to Wii U games but also has cartridge ports for NES to 3DS and also those Pong clone consoles will get classic versions and Iwata rises from his grave to confirm that Nintendo had bought Konami, Sega, Capcom, Sunset, Namco and all of your favourite games will return and Gillian Anderson from 1999 will be in my bed tonight begging me for some sweet loving. THAT TWEET MEANS ALL THAT BUT PROBABLY ANOTHER MARIO PARTY INSTEAD OF ALL THAT.
Likely nothing, but that'd be cool if Earthbound/Mother got the "Collection of Mana" treatment (which also released a never-before-localized game).
Hype responsibly @bimmy-lee
Feel like he has before, no?
@hadrian sir this is a Wendy's
Maybe Earthbound in NSO. That´s it.
Oh gdi I've gone into cardiac arrest.
@LXP8 True, but putting Earthbound + Beginnings on NSO wouldn’t be any issue for him.
Edit: Called it!
Even if Earthbound going to the SNES app is what this is, I’m happy with that. Anything with the Mother series is a positive.
Oh boy... here we go again with everyone reading too deeply into it.
@hadrian LMAO!
Don't wait for Nintendo...
“Earthbound has snow” no duh
Please don’t get everyone’s hopes up.
I really want to try out earthbound because I love RPG’s.
On a weird note when I got my wisdom teeth removed I started crying about Lucas from mother 3 for some reason. :/
Edit: well THIS aged like milk.
@GrailUK That just reminds me of a leak that happened a few years back, showing a Mother 3 remake. Everyone said that it was fake, saying that looked like mod for Link's Awakening Switch, but who knows? Maybe it was real all along, and it was just really early footage, and was being built off of the LA engine?
@alexybubble Honestly, it would fit so well. Oh, I do hope something happens.
@NintendoByNature - I’m starting to miss my mom. Perhaps I’ll call her. Should I buy this???
Edit - You know @ogo79 is weeping big ole tears of joy right now. Right down his face. His life will be fulfilled later. It’s happening.
I think it the first two games on switch online
Hype me for disappointments. I do have all the games 2 from WiiU and a Translated version for my portable rom machine. PredictIon: Mother 3 translated for NSO. They’re going to put game boy advance games on there. I will be forced to get the NSO And I will be triggered every month by the Vomitus, glutinous, maximus selections nintendo makes every month. Then I woke up.
The most likely scenario, assuming this isn't nothing, is that the first two games come to NSO. That probably sounds a little disappointing, but I'd just like to point out one thing: Up until now, the Earthbound/Beginnings rereleases have been on consoles with limited install bases. IF there exists a timeline where Mother 3 finally gets an official localization, it's probably the one where the Switch effect kicks in and those games get a surge of interest. Worth keeping in mind, I think.
@hadrian that was a work of art
Don't mind me, I'm just here with my brain reading the subheader to the vocal and tune from the respective part in "No One Mourns the Wicked". Story of my life.
@Cinderace @EarthboundBenjy I'm 90% sure it was sarcasm lol making fun of that stereotype and showing how unlikely it is that it means something
That’s it, I will only vote for the next presidential candidate who will personally ask Fumio Kishida to ask Nintendo to localize Mother 3.
"or Sakurai putting your mum in Smash Bros."
No....please...NOT THE CHANCLA!
well at least we got 1 and 2
THE RUMORS WERE TRUE
Now, if we could only get Mother 3...
3 Got the shaft LOL.
Time to get the fuzzy pickles outta the freezer.
How hard is Earthbound beginnings?
It's too bad it's just NSO and not actual games you could download.
It would happen eventually, not a big deal, there were already available on Wii U and New 3DS (Beginnings not sure if it was only on Wii U)
About time! Now people can stop pining for Earthbound and inevitably move on to something else, I will play it at some point but I am in no hurry.
I couldn’t wait and played Earthbound on my dusted off 3DS, it was amazing. Is Beginnings worth a go?
Wow this was predicted by Video game chronicle. Too bad you can't actually get them on Switch. This is why Wii U is better than Switch, for retro gaming at least!
@JoeDiddley If you like an old school grind fest. It’s OK.
@Captain_Toad It’s very old school. Think Final Fantasy 2. Shouldn’t be too bad with save states tho.
Ah, loved Earthbound when it dropped on Wii U. We still ain’t getting Mother 3 though.
It's real, earthbound is coming today
Time to play them for the first time...
finally
Now let's see earthbound 3, and a GBA library.
@Hadrian's Wall of Text! This has been your regularly scheduled Cultural Moment from the British Corporation of Truth.
I was so hyped about Goldeneye (with online multiplayer coming later today) that I feel soooooo disappointed (MK DLC was great though!) and already got these games. And I really never believe the rumours. Except this time!
Still good timing, because at Saturday (February 5th) 8:03 PM I picked 7 days trial of NSO and other good thing it only end 9 days later instead 7 (February 14th), so timing end up for this for me extremely cool.
I own these on Wii U but I'm not connecting that dreadful console on my TV again so I'm very happy to play them on NSO.
I like when people joke about Mother 3. But I'm also taking it seriously ever since I read an article that revealed how many decades fans waited for a localization. That's why I hope something comes out of that ideal one day. Still, I can finally play Earthbound
Bummer I can't give him money directly since it's not purchaseable. Good for NSO tho.
@Krysus If you play it on NSO it does go towards their metrics, so you can show your interest that way. If you have an NSO sub that is. You can always play during a free trial if not.
@Troll_Decimator unfortunately Big N doesn't use those metrics towards interest in making the game available for sale and only perceives it as interest in NSO benefits.
@Krysus They absolutely look at metrics, if everyone started playing Earthbound, they would pay attention. Realistically though, it won't happen, even if it's "free" on NSO most people won't play it.
It’s already live and I’m already playing it… good stuff
@Troll_Decimator I know. That's why I bought it on 3ds and Wii U years ago.
YES!!! SO MUCH YES!!!!!!! I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO PLAY THIS!!!!!!
YES! Thank you Nintendo! Now, would it be too much too ask for Mother 3...?
Hm. These are a bit hard to get into, no? At least if you didn't love them back then already. Was hoping for something modern :/
Just to remind everyone that Mother 3 doesn't exist outside of Japan. Oh Nintendo, you will never change.
Haven't finished the first game and the second is an acid trip I'm looking forward to revisit again.
Now with its inclusion on the NSO, EarthBound has been available four times since its 2013 comeback (Wii U Virtual Console, 3DS Virtual Console, SNES Mini except in Japan and this one) and it's the second time Earthbound Beginnings has been available in modern days.
Good for you Nintendo!
Now to add Super Mario RPG and the service will essentially be complete.
Cool, they finally drip fed two good games they could've given us years ago. Can't wait for StarTropics 2, Pinball, & Urban Champion to come to the NES Online app in 2025.
@JoeDiddley Earthbound is better in nearly every way, but I found Beginnings fun and manageable in its own way...if you use a guide. Remember, it's a RPG from the NES days. And you will grind. A lot.
They should release Chrono Trigger on NSO to go with the Chrono Cross remaster.
I may have pooped myself a little when I saw this announcement. I can't believe they finally are going to make it available to play.
@HammerGalladeBro
I hope Earthbound will be re-released on each new Nintendo console going forward. I have faith the West will eventually see Mother 3 localized.
... Aaaaaand... No Mother 3. Sigh. Thanks for EB and EBB again, I guess... 🙄
@Banjo-
I agree 100%. I play the Wii U regularly just for all the GBA and DS games and N64 games that are not on NSO. The Switch would have been perfect for virtual console. I think the NSO is a poor substitute/successor for the VC.
@Don I wholeheartedly agree. Switch should have Virtual Console. I still have my Wii U connected to the TV and play it regularly, also for Wii games.
I’ve heard great things about Earthbound. Might try it sometime.
@Astral-Grain Mad props for the Danzig reference. 👍
@BloodNinja Right?
These were welcome, long overdue additions to NSO - it was great to see them finally announced!
I know next to nothing about Itoi-san, but I instantly like him after seeing that video message he posted. You can tell he is genuinely thrilled his games will be so accessible now. And that seemed like a lovingly deliberate nod to Nintendo Direct inventor Satoru Iwata at the end of his message.
My older daughter likes offbeat stories and games like Undertale, and I explained the Mother series is what set the stage for Toby Fox. I hope to play a little of Earthbound together with her. 😁
Never played the series, but I've heard so many good things, so I have to give it a proper playthrough. There's just SO much else to play right now! I'm aware of Giygas, the part where Poo meditates on the mountain or something, and maybe some other disturbing scenes. This game is going to absolutely traumatize me, isn't it? I played the first 10 minutes and have already had like 4 genuine chuckles, though I already felt quite uneasy. I'm kind of more freaked out by retro stuff than I am games with realistic graphics. I recently discovered the Lavendar Town theme, for example, and that's creepy as heck. Would anyone like to volunteer to give me therapy after each play session?
Eh I never finished Earthbound. Got near the end and it was such a grindfest I decided I didn't care to see how it ended.
Good news I guess but I could have any SNES game on my phone in all of 3 minutes, so not very exciting.
Big yawn, unfortunately. Earthbound was already on Wii U, New 3DS, and SNES Mini, and Beginnings was on Wii U. These arecNSO only and there's still no Mother 3.
I have some Earthbound on my snes mini, a GBA fan translated rom and Something on 3DS. They didn't hold my attention for more than a couple of minutes. I doubt many retro game collection enthusiasts will want to rent this on NSO, even if they are big fans.
They had to do this right after Arceus? Man now I will have zero time left!!
Aww yea, time to take a baseball bat to some New Age Retro Hippies!
Any opinions about the best one to start with? I realize that Beginnings was made first, but most people in the west didn’t get to play it until I think the WiiU era.
Very, very good news. And surprising tbh
I thought this was a good thing. Then I read the comments. I didn't ever play ANY mother game, so I'll see what's what. If you really dig Mother 3 so much, I guess there are ways online to play it... ?
@UglyCasanova Earthbound literally throws XP at you, how did you manage to get to the end and then have to grind?
Wich one of the 2 games should I play first?
@dustinprewitt yeah actually i that would be the bonus after that segment.. the first part of a gba.. (but then i got mario kart anouncement which was making me happier...
@Joekun this is a good question.. they show the snes first, which made me wonder this same question...
@Joekun I have not personally completed Beginnings, but from what I've seen, Earthbound (in my opinion) has nicer graphics, better music, and funnier dialogue. Apparently, Beginnings is really hard and kind of grindy. I think that most people got into the series with Earthbound so I suggest you start with that. If you really like it, play Beginnings.
@UglyCasanova somebody doesn’t like grinding in games and doesn’t care who knows it. Haha
I've never played the games before, so looking forward to trying them out!
Shame about them skipping Mother 3, maybe if these ports perform well enough?
After giving Beginnings a look in the video, I think I will stick with finally finishing he SNES one and leave it at that. But I am happy they released Beginnings anyways. Much better than some of the dross they decided to release so far.
I love Earthbound but honestly, I hate the borders the Switch NES/SNES apps have. I find them really distracting and just wish we could turn them off.
Also, probably not a real concern but is it a good idea to have that static pattern displayed full-time while playing games on the OLED?
@Splodge I’ve read a few reports of people testing burn in on the switch oled and there’s no evidence to support that it’s a valid concern. Granted, YMMV but I’ve been playing mine since launch with plenty of games with static images, brightness up high and noticed nothing negative. Really wouldn’t worry about burn in at this point. I agree that the avatar and toolbar at the bottom should be able to be hidden though.
@Daniel36 beginnings is a hard game to love lol it feels more like an NES prototype of earthbound or a de-make, if you will. I’ve started that game maybe a half a dozen times in my life and never finished it. It’s just waaay too grindy for my tastes. Earthbound on the other hand I’ve probably played through more than any other rpg and it’s a blast every time. Definitely try to see earthbound through. I’m just happy so many more people will have access to these games now
@Zach1122 Well, I already had it on my Mini SNES but that thing's such a hassle to set up I was simply happy it was given this re-release for ease of use.
@Moistnado
why wouldnt a retro game fan want to play earthbound, even if they are a fan of earthbound?
serious question, do you come up with ways to be negative just because other people are excited? (yes, you do.)
@UglyCasanova
i played through this as a small child.
once you are sufficiently powerful in a given area, you start winning battles automatically. there is no grinding, and you don't know what you are talking about again. 🤠
@Splodge The Switch OLED is highly resilient to burn-in. Here is a video by Wulff Den that should put your mind at ease : https://youtu.be/crFifvVwSaQ He tested the console non-stop with several games and high-contrast images. Your Switch should be okay from the borders on the NES and SNES App even if you were running it 24/7.
@Wexter @Zach1122
Thanks. Yes, burn in is definitely not a legitimate concern given how people have been testing it.
But really my main point was just that the grey borders are really annoying and put me off playing NES/SNES that way. Darker scenes in particular are ruined. I generally prefer to play with a black border, given the choice.
@EarthboundBenjy you weren’t correct per se, but on a deeper level, also, you were
@Splodge I hate borders in general! As a child of the 1990s, I'm used to black bars on my screen so it doesn't bother me. But, when companies just slap art on the sides or a gradient effect it triggers something in me that just annoys me. I've gotten used to the NES and SNES one, but I get where you're coming from.
@UglyCasanova
hey sorry for that last one... not sure why i was quite so defensive, hadn't had my coffee yet?
you are entitled to your opinion, wtf. life's too short to mess around with games you dont like!
i think earthbound is worth even watching a playthrough, just to soak in the humor and music and story. its a great game! ✌️
@-wc- It's fine. Not swooning over a game everyone else seems to love while finding it mediocre is bound to have that effect.
@Wexter not every border is bad. I loved the borders from the super game boy
