Disney is rebooting Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers with a new movie, and the first trailer contains a cheeky little nod to Capcom's 1990 NES game.
Described as "a comeback 30 years in the making", the new movie will launch exclusively on Disney+ on May 20th, 2022 and is a "hybrid live-action/CG animated action-comedy" featuring the vocal talents of John Mulaney (Saturday Night Live) as Chip and Andy Samberg (Hotel Transylvania, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) as Dale. The cast also includes Seth Rogen, J.K. Simmons, Keegan-Michael Key, Eric Bana and Will Arnett.
Here's the synopsis:
In “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers,” Chip and Dale are living amongst cartoons and humans in modern-day Los Angeles, but their lives are quite different now. It has been decades since their successful television series was canceled, and Chip (voice of Mulaney) has succumbed to a life of suburban domesticity as an insurance salesman. Dale (voice of Sandberg), meanwhile, has had CGI surgery and works the nostalgia convention circuit, desperate to relive his glory days. When a former cast mate mysteriously disappears, Chip and Dale must repair their broken friendship and take on their Rescue Rangers detective personas once again to save their friend’s life.
The NES game Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers was followed by a sequel in 1993. Both games are included on The Disney Afternoon Collection, which sadly never made it to Switch.

This looks absolutely bonkers (at least it did with the sound off - I have no idea what is going on).
Probably in my top 5 NES games.
It looks awful. What have they done to Chip and Dale? 🤦♂️
That's cool and all but why do Chip and Dale sound so terrible. I get it's voice actors real voices but their high-pitched voices is part of what makes them. This seems like another quick "woke" reimagining. Whatever I guess. Edit: Opinions are just that people. Don't let a word trigger you so deftly. You lend the Sigma grindset too much credibility.
What in the fanfic is that plot?!
My favorite nes ganmes, played these non stop! They really felt like playing a movie... So why is it so hard to make it a movie?! 😂
@Half-ShellHero I think it's less about being woke, and more: you liked Deadpool and detective Pikachu right... Right?!!!!
@Damo
I got REALLY excited thinking there was going to be a Chip n Dale GAME reboot.
this is a gaming website, if its a film reboot can we say that in the headline please?
I fail to understand the logic behind not releasing the Disney Afternoon Collection on Switch.
The game back in the day was one of the best co-op games around. I loved that game, and played it way too many times.
This movie...so they stole Alvin and the Chipmunks back in the day, merged it with Who Framed Roger Rabbit? today, and called it a day. Genius. Getting tired of Disney taking a dump on all their classics. And how can you do a chipmunk film without chipmunk voices? Ross Badasarian set the template for this back in the 1950s. Disney successfully copied it for decades with their own twist. How could they possibly fail now? Who says lets take iconic characters and make them sound less iconic, just have Dwayne Johnson record some lines.???
@-wc- I agree. I thought a new game was coming as well.
@Half-ShellHero I didn't see anything particularly woke about it, unless you mean the creators seemingly having no idea which IP they're using (and particularly caring about it). None forced diversity into a story about carroon chipmunks noted.
For a second my brain checked out and thought the title was 'Chip 'n Dale Coming to NES Online', then I quickly remembered that'd take effort to happen and re-read the title.
I would love a Darkwing Duck remake!
This looks freaking awesome. Meta humour done right
That was the first video game I picked on my own (my NES came with the super mario/duck hunt pack). Never beat it but I used to love it and the show.
I am fond of Rescue Rangers... I enjoy Lonely Island... these sort of 4th wall IP jumble movies can be fun stories... but this just doesn't seem like a good fit.
They had a brief shot of Roger Rabbit and I immediately thought "This movie would be much better as a Roger Rabbit sequel"
Anyway. As far as the NES games go, I was always appreciative of Co-op multiplayer games since there were very few good ones that didn't have you either play against each other or take turns. Rescue Rangers 2 might actually be my favorite co-op game. As the middle child, I got to play it as both the younger sibling tagging along, and later as the older sibling leading the charge.
Holy crap that looks BAD very bad!!
Seen the trailer and it already look like a joke so sorry not gonna go see it. If Disney is planning to kill their IPs of the past, then they had succeeded with Chip 'n Dales: Rescue Rangers.
I'll give it a watch.
It's going to be on Disney Plus, at worst I lose 90 minutes in an evening.
I enjoyed the first portion of the trailer, but when things jumped ahead 30 years it looked kind of annoying, not very funny, and the music was fairly awful. Lowering my expectations accordingly
I can't not laugh when Seth Rogan laughs.
@Half-ShellHero I have no idea why you think changing their voices would be part of being 'woke' in the original sense of the word or the newer toxic manipulation of it.
But yeah this looks bad.
This movie looks absolutely TERRIBLE. This looks like it should have been a Roger Rabbit sequel but judging by there terrible humor, I'm glad it isn't.
I don't even understand why they chose Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers...of all things....to make this type of movie. Good lord...

Cgi/live action with endless product placement disguised as references is this Disney’s attempt at a Sony movie?
Might be interesting. If anyone would get cgi surgery it would be Dale. I just hope they aren’t as pervy on Gadget as they were on the show. Watching them fight over her when she clearly wasn’t interested and have them slow down the plot was super annoying growing up.
Typical Hollywood remake, but self aware? Looks and sounds just awful. The mix of 2D and 3D animation is bad, voices are bad. I don't understand why they are focusing so much on the animation commentary in this trailer.
But on a good note the original cartoon is on Blu-Ray today for those what want physical media.
I'm an old grumpy man and this looks super dumb.
I...hate it.
And I love the Rescue Rangers, especially that Nes Game!
@jorel262 Yep. You don't get a free pass by going "haha! look reboots are dumb and we don't want them!". A self aware joke is fine, but this appears to a plot point with the way they hammer on!
And I just can't get used to that mixture of animation styles. Nor the voices. Speed them up!!!!
can't wait for the dark and gritty Talespin reboot next
Interesting fact about gadget.
She actually has a cult in another country...yep you heard me. She is actually the basis of a friggin cult!
Edit:looked it up and it’s a Russian cult.
Why am I not surprised? 😑
That may be the most soulless movie trailer I've eve seen.
God, that looks terrible.
I'm clearly in the minority here, but I really do like what they're trying to do. An evolution of the Roger Rabbit cartoon/live action hybrid that acknowledges the advances in technology/animation throughout the last thirty(!) years since that movie makes for a cute flick, that should be absolutely harmless as just a Disney+ exclusive. Definitely won't be any more substantial than WB's take with Space Jam 2 last year, but SNL faves John Mulaney and Andy Samberg are enough to pique my interest!
@Half-ShellHero Almost everyone in Hollywood is "woke", if only for self-preservation and to hide their own abuse. An actor or a director having a political opinion doesn't automatically mean they will insert it into their works. I have enjoyed plenty of entertainment created by people whose politics I find absolutely baffling. Don't get fooled into believing everything is political, that way lies misery.
I played the second game on a totally legal NES last year and thought it would be shovelware, but it’s actually a quite well-designed co-op game.
I'll give it a watch since I remember them fondly. Plus I like Andy Samberg. The scene with the mice was pretty cute especially.
I like how they respected the use of classic 2d animation when it aired on Disney Afternoon as a series. Rather than doing the Smurfs 3D treatment. Going with the Roger Rabbit style approach is more interesting. As for the voices I’m not so sure. I can see they are taking the DuckTales 2017 route. It’s possible if this movie gets enough support, we might get a few modern seasons of TV episodes as a reboot on Disney Plus.
Also don’t understand why Capcom is being so hesitant to port the Disney Afternoon collection on Nintendo Switch. These are classic NES games that originated on a Nintendo system and deserves to be on it. The Aladdin and Jungle Book collection are okay. But Ducktales 1and 2, and both Rescue Rangers games are far better and my favorites. Darkwing Duck is also a high quality Disney classic game. If Capcom and Disney are listening put it on Nintendo Switch Online as standalone games if you have to. Work with the Big “N”, can be a win on both sides.
@Ryu_Niiyama Clearly, you have not watched chipmunks in mating season.
Just saying.....
This looks way better than that Tom and Jerry movie
Now for the remastered game
@Half-ShellHero I'm not sure what you mean about their idealogies? I know Andy Samburg has spoken out about inequalities and tried to address or at least raise awareness of them in some of his work. That seems a positive thing to me, especially if the whole cast share those idealogies. I mean, who wants to support people who are actively against such things as equal rights and representation?
I dunno. I feel like it’s taking a chance to mock how ridiculous some animation and reboot trends have been. I’m open to it.
@Half-ShellHero Not sure where you’re getting that. I mean some of the actors are political progressives, sure, but this seems like a big parody animation movie more than anything. I don’t see where anything in that trailer is meant to be serious enough to make that assessment. Tbh when someone slaps the “woke” label in their judgement of something in a derogatory manner it feels like a big red flag.
Actually, outside of the presence of Seth Rogan's crazy ass, this doesn't look woke at all!! Which is really refreshing!! Before I clicked on it I fully expected that Gadget would be shown as being like the new main hero and that Chip+Dale had been "holding her back" or some such thing. But this looks pretty good!!
I don't like how one of them is 2d and one is 3d, but, it could work I guess. So, yea, looks alright!!
@SmaggTheSmug "Don't get fooled into believing everything is political, that way lies misery." Well said.
WTF?!!!! And I mean that in a "I hope this is as funny and wacky good" as the trailer looks
@Half-ShellHero Sounds like you were looking for an opportunity to throw that word out. Of all things, you picked an article about Chip & Dale? Seriously?
@Zuljaras There was one in development, with questions about whether it was gonna be a spinoff of the Ducktales reboot or its own thing completely. I believe Seth Rogan was involved in that as well. Last I heard, the project got cancelled
@Half-ShellHero Sure.
@Ryu_Niiyama I got the NES on the late end of things relative to a lot of people in my circle. Similarly to your situation, while not my first game, Rescue Rangers was probably the first game I picked out for the NES beyond the pack-in game.
It looks awful! And they even made fun of the supposedly awful Cats movie...this can't be right?!
I wasn't digging the premise when I read the description, but I had a look at the trailer to be fair. While I didn't hate everything in it, I wasn't a fan. Some of the gags would work better in an actual cartoon I think. But what really struck me was how disconnected the voices for Chip and Dale sound. It didn't feel like those were their voices.
So the trailer appeared as a ad on a video I was watching and it looked really similar like my mediaverse concept.
The concept is that the mediaverse is essentially us humans living with video game and cartoon characters so if video game characters appear then I guess I can kiss my mediaverse idea goodbye.
