Re: Japanese Charts: Splatoon Raiders Sales Drop 84%, But It Still Leads The Pack

@Max_the_German this feels like the equivalent of visiting a place for a day, it's raining, and then you declare to everyone that it rains there every day.

To quote another person from sales discussions: zoom out. Switch 2 sales trends are outpacing Switch 1. It's doing fine.

And no, it won't outsell Switch 1 because it won't have the once in a lifetime (please let that be true) COVID bump. But let's not fall into the Wall Street mindset of "if numbers don't go up, this is a failure."

Me - still rolling through FFVIIR (Switch 2) over here. I've also downloaded a boat load of demos to try out this weekend. I may give RE2R (PS5) some more attention as well.

Wife - she's gotten very heavy into her Ghosts of Tsushima (PS5) playthrough.

Kids - Tomadachi Life (Switch Lites) and Minecraft (Switch Lites/PC)

@ottoecamn but shouldn't the idea of having a large, diversified business be that you can let people take some swings and have some misses? I would note that in their own email, they don't say they're losing money, just that their profit margins aren't as good as some competitors.

It reminds me of the strategy a different company takes, with a few tent pole franchises surrounded by a lot of less successful games that occasionally fall flat on their face.

In other words, in Microsoft's world, bye bye Metroid. Bye bye, Fire Emblem. So on and so forth.

@HeadPirate I'm not so sure about adding 20,000 jobs in 5 years. For 1, they didn't really add jobs by buying studios, they just slapped their name on someone else's homework. I also came across a few articles listing their headcount in 2024 as 22,000 total. It seems unlikely to me that they went from 2,000 people to 22,000 in that time frame.

All that said, sure, it's ragebait if they had only laid off people just now.

But that would ignore the mass lay offs in January 2024, May 2024, September 2024, and July 2025. It would also ignore the studio closures at Tango Gameworks, Arkane Austin, Alpha Dog, and Roundhouse Studios.

Me:
FFVII Remake (Switch 2) - at the end of chapter 9 and I've had a really good time with it so far.
RE2R (PS5) - I'm not too far in and playing it very sporadically. It's been a while since I've played a RE game, so I'm finding in criminally short on ammo at all times!

Wife:
Magical Princess (Steam) - definitely not my kind of game
Ghosts of Tsushima (PS5) - heavy discount on this one so I got it for her. She really likes it and it's absolutely gorgeous.

Re: Talking Point: As Sony Bins Physical, How Long Until Nintendo Follows Suit?

JLSlone

@Pat_trick sorry I'm not willing to keep destroying the planet for Big Blu-Ray and Big Data Cards! You just keep buying up all that plastic and pollution to keep lining the pockets of the mega corps at Blu-ray printing and petroleum. Sheep.

See, it's really easy to do once you decide to dehumanize someone who doesn't do exactly what you want them to do. You can easily call anyone a sheep! Fun, huh?

Re: Sony Ditches Physical Media - Suddenly Game-Key Cards Don't Look So Bad

JLSlone

@Lanmanna in fairness to Sony, they did say they would be saying digital games through other retailers, meaning that you will still see discounts. For example, this past week Best Buy had a bunch of Nintendo games on digital on discount.

But also, sales will happen to try and entice more players to purchase the game as it ages. That happens regardless.

Could I be missing the forest? Maybe? But I don't think so. I'll still be able to play my games immediately and (almost assuredly) in the distant future. Which, given hardware failures and normal accidents, is the exact same gamble I take with physical.

All that said, I do feel for people who liked having the option and I probably should have expressed that.

FFVII Remake on my Switch 2.

Other than that, it's our first weekend opening a PS5, so it's mostly just been demos and getting a feel for things.

My wife thought Rise of the Ronin was okay, but wasn't convinced to spring for it. She loved Onimusha, but obviously that's not out for a bit. We were both a bit underwhelmed by My Time At Sandrock.

I played a small bit of Astro's Play Room and already fell in love with the little guy. I also saw RE2R is on discount, so I may grab that.

We're also hoping to finish up Gilmore Girls this weekend. I haven't been as impressed as the cultural hype led me to believe.

@OldManHermit Babylon 5 is similar in that the first season can be a bit rough. The fifth season was also a little rough due to them being unsure if it was going to be renewed, but the last five episodes are some of the best TV in history.

And I did survive season 1 of TNG! The acting was...a bit uneven. And the plots were...also a bit uneven! But it was almost all worth it to see a man's face melt and head explode at least!

@trymer89 I'm finally about to fly into the light, so I'm assuming I'll be hitting the twists and turns soon!

I've been playing this game basically since it released. I play games about as slowly as I also read books, which is to say, extremely slowly.

Someday, I hope to be buried with my significant backlog.

Re: Metroid Prime 4's "Combined Sales" Have Surpassed One Million, Nintendo Confirms

JLSlone

So in less than a month it's most likely sold as much as both Prime 2 and Prime 3 and probably nearing half of Prime 1.

And we're calling that a failure?

This really seems to be the trend of Switch 2's press coverage.

1) Press reports news that something is terrible and a failure (Prime 4 didn't sell a million copies)
2) Someone official comes out and says, no, that's actually not true (actually prime 4 did sell a million copies)
3) Press never retracts previous claims and it's too late anyways because the Internet has made the false coverage the truth going forward (Internet states for infinity that Prime 4 was a sales failure)

It's very frustrating to watch.

Re: Switch 2 Storms Towards Its Forecast Target With 17.37 Million Units Sold

JLSlone

I see some more negative folks are falling down the conspiracy route of, "These numbers aren't real." It's always fascinating to watch how far people will go to avoid just admitting they were wrong about something.

And something as trivial as "this game box is doing well." It's not even that big of a deal to admit you were incorrect about it.

Re: UK Charts: Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade Plummets As Familiar Faces Retake The Podium

JLSlone

Why are the Galaxy games so high up there? Didn't these people see on the Internet they could just buy a (definitely functional) Wii on eBay and a (definitely functional) copy of the game on eBay and a set of (definitely functional) controllers on eBay and then just hook it up to their modern TV with it's definitely usable inputs for less than that double pack?

They must just be suckers!

Re: Japanese Charts: Sorry Samus, Octopath Is The Best-Selling New Release This Week

JLSlone

@michellelynn0976 so let me see if I'm following the logic here.

I post a comment saying that I think Nintendo develops games based more on what their developers want to do and can think up, not on what sales numbers are, so we might see a Prime 5 even if sales numbers aren't great (which is still to be determined).

I speculate (openly calling it speculation) that the 18 year gap may have been because the developers didn't have a new mechanic or direction they wanted to take the series in yet. Clearly, since Prime 4 exists, they found that new mechanic/direction.

You list a bunch of new things in Prime 4 and demand to know if I played it.

I agree they have new things in Prime 4 and that I haven't played it.

You call me uneducated.

I said I was literally defending Prime 4 as having new things.

You say I'm a troll.

Are you not seeing how this is a very confusing interaction for two humans to have?

Re: Japanese Charts: Sorry Samus, Octopath Is The Best-Selling New Release This Week

JLSlone

@michellelynn0976 I'm not sure you're following along with what I was saying.

I said they didn't have any new mechanics 18 years ago that they wanted to try out for a Prime 4. Then, over time, they gathered some ideas and eventually started development on Prime 4, which is now filled with those new gameplay mechanics.

You're being very aggressive about a comment that wasn't at all a criticism of Prime 4.

Re: Japanese Charts: Sorry Samus, Octopath Is The Best-Selling New Release This Week

JLSlone

@michellelynn0976 My comment was that the gap was longer because they didn't have a new gameplay mechanic, not low sales.

That would then mean that they started developing the game once they brainstormed some new mechanics organically, which seems to be the case from your list of new mechanics in the game.

That said, no, I haven't played it and I doubt I will. I suck at anything first person. I'm glad you're enjoying it though.

Re: Japanese Charts: Sorry Samus, Octopath Is The Best-Selling New Release This Week

JLSlone

@ROMhaiku I think it was more to do with them not having a new, innovative game play mechanic for a Prime game than the sales numbers.

Don't get me wrong, if it sold 50 million units, yeah, they'd probably have put some more resources into figuring that out, but I don't know that the low sales were the biggest factor in that gap.

This is all speculation on my part though, so feel free to disagree.
