@Bolt_Strike I wonder where the Xbox/PlayStation version of Sonic Generations would have appeared on this list? Top 5 I suspect. I actually went out and bought an Xbox purely for that game, and it was well worth it.
@anoyonmus this was the first 3D Zelda game I played to completion. I found the first hour a little tedious, but after that I had a really enjoyable time with it. It gets a lot of flack in that it has a lot of hand-holding, but if you’re not familiar with previous Zelda 3D games then you’ll find that help invaluable (and it cut down too much pacing backwards and forwards wondering what to do next).
I do wonder if this is a true remaster (like Twilight and Wind Walker) or an upscaled emulation like Mario Galaxy. I fear the latter. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed the Wii version, I loved the motion control, especially the bit at the of the game when you have waves and waves of monsters to kill. A bit of extra haptic feedback would improve the immersion.
I’m surprised so many of you think so highly of Sonic 3. I found this a disappointment after following on from Sonic 1, 2 and CD. The music was lacklustre (Carnival Night drove me up the wall), and there seemed less content than previous games (6 zones vs 7 or 8). Whilst the levels were far longer, many dragged and were quite repetitive (Marble Garden). Each to their own though.
Colours isn’t a bad game, but was refined by Generations. The 2D sections were frustrating, they were too zoomed out and the movement stiff. I assume this is why they compensated for this with the double jump. The same mistakes were made in Forces too.
I wouldn’t be surprised if this is essentially just the PC port. Bet the Switch version doesn’t run at 60fps either!
I think it’s viable for Apple to become a competitor. Google and Amazon have already given a shot and failed, I’m not sure how much longer Microsoft will bother before throwing in the towel. There needs to be another serious competitor to Sony and Nintendo, and who else is bigger to take them on?
I do wish there was a bit more consistency with the ‘Game Trials’. They’re random so you never know when they will drop and so can miss them. They need to take an approach similar to Microsoft and Sony.
I purchased 3D Land when it came out and was pretty disappointed with it. I found it clunky and too zoomed in (although understandable considering the 3DS screen size). So when they announced 3D World I was pretty underwhelmed. However when I played 3D World, I found they couldn’t be more different. 3D World is so fluid and full of great ideas. Probably the most ‘funnest’ Mario game since Galaxy - and on retrospective I’d say 3D World is the best Mario yet!
@FroZtedFlakerZz I think all of the Switch Lites should have had the dual coloured controls. When the original Switch launched we all thought the different controller colours look silly, but now it’s part of its style.
How about something more leftfield? The Hornet car from Daytona (followed by a Daytona 1&2 collection shadow drop!). We had it in Fighters Megamix after all! Probably will be someone from a RPG with a sword though...
This is one of the best Mario games, so I envy anyone playing it for the first time. Bursting full of good ideas, and really fun to play. It will be interesting to see whether ‘Bowsers Fury’ is enough to purchase the game again.
As others have said, this is anti-competitive. It’s crazy that a boxed game is generally cheaper than download, but you can understand why - market forces push boxed prices down.
I do wonder whether this will blow up in theirs, Apple, Google and Microsoft’s face one day?
I could imagine a ‘Sonic Adventure Mania’ style game containing areas of Sonic Adventure 1/2 & Heroes. Unlike the 2D games, the Adventure series has really dated (and arguable SA2 wasn’t really an ‘adventure’ at all).
They had some interesting ideas and play mechanics in Sonic Lost World which they should explore again, it did vary the gameplay somewhat, unfortunately they didn’t pull it off very well.
@SalvorHardin Agreed, music is a bit of a let down, hard to catch the melodies like the classic games had. I’ve avoided the retro music, as I wanted to give the new music a go first, but what I did hear from it, it just seemed pretty random. Why not use the boss music for the boss. Also, new music - at least use the original songs (albeit re-recorded) for the character select and stage complete.
The game is brutally hard, so much so that it’s not that enjoyable. I’m sure if you stick at it and learn the patterns you’ll be fine, but that requires a lot of time. I’d prefer those pink things to refuel your health instead of building up your combo meter, the combo meter should power up based on hits.
How does the Saturn pad compare to the MegaDrive? I loved the 6 button MegaDrive! The Saturn ones I had were the original chunky ones with the horrible shiny d-pad, so never got a chance to try out the Japanese/later Western ones.
Also what is this the chance of these ever working with iOS13?
My first time playing Super Metroid after all these years. Only about 30 minutes in, and compared to Metroid Fusion and Metroid Zero, I’m not enjoying it quite so much. I’ve also kicked off Yoshi’s Island which seems harder than the GBA release for some reason. Hopefully those who haven’t played Yoshi’s Island give it a go as it really is fantastic and very imaginative.
It’s hard to know what this includes. For example, video games (which I suspect includes mobiles and micropayments) generally can only be purchased. With movies and music, whilst they can be purchased too, majority will consist of streaming and cinema, live concerts/festivals.
As amazing as this game looks, watching a few videos on YouTube it does look frustrating. I’m all for a challenge - I grew up with the 80’s 8-bit micros - but in this day and age it needs to be done in the right way. I must have played the last level in Mario Oddesey 40+ times and still not beaten it, but it’s not frustrating and I keep coming back to it. Alternatively Hollow Knight - the bosses are far too difficult, and I don’t have the time or patience to keep at it. I really hope my view of Cuphead is wrong as it’s a beautiful looking game. Dare I say, the best art style since Yoshi’s Island on the SNES.
So are these the PAL games on the collection (slower, squashed screen) or are they the USA NTSC versions. Beyond Oasis and Sonic 3D Blast are the US names for these games.
Why not make all these Arcade games 10p ago to play - just like the they were originally intended. There could be a £7 option to own it. It’s worth remembering that any port of a Sega arcade game - irrelevant if how arcade perfect it is, is still missing 50% of the fun. Just think back to the cabinets of Space Harrier, Outrun, Super Hang On, Afterburner, Daytona etc, you can’t replicate that at home.
Whilst the mobile ports of Sonic 1 are better with extra content (such as the extra bits in Marble Zone), you will notice one of the screenshots is for ‘Mega Play’. This is the arcade version of Sonic where the time counts down on each level, forcing you to dash through as quickly possible. Some levels are removed and a few have changes. I don’t recall this being released before.
Whilst I was really excited for Sonic Mania, and I thoroughly enjoyed the game, I’m hoping it’s not a sequel - it’s too soon. I would prefer that team to work on a different IP such as Streets if Rage Mania. Looking at the attendees I would assume some sort of animation shorts, maybe for YouTube?
I’d like the team to create something new (and I’m sure they would too), it’s also good from a creatively point of view not working on Mario after Mario titles. During the Wii U years they also did Captain Toad and (I think) NES Remix.
It all looks rather confusing, keeping track of your character in that boss fight looks a nightmare. Whilst I didn’t like the game, I do wish they went for the art style used in Sonic Lost World - that was clear, fun and a better representation of the 2D classic games.
It's not a big problem that some games won't fit on a cartridge and you have to download the rest, but what is a problem is the expectation that consumers need to go out a purchase a SD card as well within the first 6 months of the consoles life. 32GB really is a pointless amount of internal memory. Also what confuses me is how Mario Oddesey is £40 to purchase on cartridge but £60 to download from Amazon. Makes a mockery of the whole cartridge costs...
@Desrever Make sure you don't hold right on the control pad as you enter the tube for the Chemical Plant 2 boss fight. If you do, once you beat the boss you will be stuck in that place.
I do suspect it will be £249 with a game by Christmas. However I'm not sure that will be good enough, particularly with how aggressive Sony has been with the PlayStation. I guess it comes down to the games, of which we need more heavy hitters (combination of cross format and exclusives), and people's view of how important using it in portable mode is.
Such a shame it wasn't implemented. Both TP and WW felt a backwards step compared to the motion control in Skyward Sword. It worked really well in that game and I feel made the experience more enjoyable - particularly the last bit of the game when you have kill 100s of the red baddies.

@Scrubicius I wouldn’t bother getting it. It’s a hassle to set up and not really that much fun, despite some pretty clever effects.

I wish they got him in to do the SOR4 soundtrack from the beginning. The DLC music blows away the main game soundtrack.
