The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD is now less than a month away, yet Nintendo still hasn't actually told us all that much about the improvements we can expect to see over the Wii original.
We do know that the revamped Switch release will have "smoother and more intuitive" controls and a new button-only control option, as well as an improved fast travel system (although that one's locked behind an amiibo), but the Wii U remakes of both Twilight Princess and The Wind Waker went a little beyond this, both including very welcome gameplay tweaks that improved each game's pacing.
Skyward Sword HD's improved fast travel sounds like the sort of thing that could rival the new features found in those Wii U ports, but if that's locked behind an amiibo, surely there'll be something more that'll make the idea of double-dipping seem worth it to those who've played the original?
Well, Nintendo's website has a quick list of improvements we can expect to see, including a section on quality-of-life enhancements. It specifically highlights "refinements to player tutorials and general guidance," so basically, Fi's been dialled down a bit, do we think?
- Enhanced performance
- Improved motion controls with the Joy-Con controllers
- All-new button controls, allowing you to choose your style of play
- Various quality-of-life enhancements, including refinements to player tutorials and general guidance throughout the adventure
Are you hoping for more clarification on the improvements Skyward Sword HD will bring? Will you wait to hear more, or will you be buying the game regardless? Let us know in the usual place.

Take a break! Change the batteries! There is a dungeon right in front of you, I think we should explore it!
Buy the game regardless. Haven't finished it on the Wii, loved it, but lack of time, so hope to be able to finish it here in HD!
You got a blue rupee! As it has been the last fifty times, it's worth five rupees!
@Karst this is the change that I want the most - by far my biggest issue with the original haha
I'm happy enough with the game in HD, I never had all of the problems people had with the original.
Sure it's not the best Zelda game - but it's still great.
Like, I hope that they tone down Fi spelling out how to solve the puzzles for you.
I still remember how Fi will instantly pop out and tell you how to solve a gate unlock puzzle in the desert area, if you so much as exit the motion gimmick to re-orient yourself or if you wanted to check the map to see what you want to do.
Seriously, give the player a chance to figure things out for themselves, and don't force dialogue.
My first opinion of Skyward Sword was that it was a hundred brilliant, clever ideas, hidden behind five really stupid ones. It deserves a lot more appreciation, especially for the dungeon puzzles and the boss design. The final encounter is really stunning, even in standard definition. Happy to play it on the Switch.
Only issue I had with the original game is Fi
Please let there be a Fi disable or dumb down
Item details on every pickup, Fi's constant distractions, and sped up dialogue are at the top of my wishlist for QOL fixes 😑
@Bret
You may mock this now, but it turned out that ridiculous item pick-up notification was vital to a low% run of Twilight Princess.
Just as long as you don't mind staring at rupees for over a dozen hours.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2nRW3wKnVY
Never played this one cause motion controls stink but now they're fixing that with buttons I might grab it eventually.
@RupeeClock Oh man, this sounds hilarious. I'll definitely watch later today.
More guidance? Fi will be telling you where to go every half minute... Lol
How important/useful will that fast travel amiibo be? Haven’t played this game before, but will probably give it a go.
if they improved the tutorials and flow of progression in a way that isn't constantly intrusive, i might actually consider picking this up. there's way more problems than just that, but i wouldn't mind reliving some of the cooler moments if bare minimum annoyances have been dealt with
@BlueOcean
Fi: Master, your hearts are getting low!
Me: Thanks, Fi, I could tell several hearts ago when my heart meter started beeping!
Why they chose to give us this over Wind Waker I’ll never fathom.
Still not sure, I'll wait for reviews, i couldn't get into the original on the Wii, hated the controls, id play this in portable if its good.
Let's find out who will be more annoying : Navi or Fi ???
Sounds like they've dialed up Fi to tell you more to me.
@Pirate1 not important at all. Seriously.
@nkarafo that is not even for discussion. Fi is by far the worst (and more annoying companion). The best os obviously Midna!
Why bother? It will sell at $60 without these bare minimum “enhancements”.
@Balta666 id say King of Red Lions or sassy Tatl
Wouldn't it be funny if the changes to the tutorials was to increase the amount of Fi dialogue
@HamatoYoshi Why wouldn't they though? They already gave you Wind Waker HD if you bought the Wii U. This is the only one left that wasn't in HD.
@fafonio worst or best?
I'll be getting this, though not at launch. Plenty of time to learn about all the QoL updates beforehand lol. While I don't dislike Fi per se, I do hope they dialed her down a little.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi because no one bought a Wii U so there is not really HD versions of WW and TP available which are much better games
I would actually consider buying this again if:
Thats what's up.
This was all I wanted to hear. Better motion, button controls to make handheld viable, and tutorials not pestering the heck out of you.
Give it to me now!
So basically nothing then, its effectively akin to playing it in dolphin with higher resolution. Visually this is actually looks worse then the Windwaker and Twilight HD games and seems to have less effort then the latter in particular
I dont know why didn't really like it back on the Wii... the only Zelda game I've played but didn't finished...
Not sure in giving it another chance now.
@Godzil agreed, I have beaten it twice and had a great time both times. peoples criticisms are absolutely true, but I think the good greatly outweighs the bad in this game.
Why has it taken them so long to just say this? Literally the only thing I needed to hear about the game.
My least favourite Zelda would have preferred WW or TP HD but I’m still buying it gonna give it another chance maybe it was the controls but this time we have options
Me: So what does Skyward Sword HD have which is new?
Nintendo: Uhhh... there will be stuff.
The description is a bit too vague. I would hope this means no more text-boxes everytime you collect an item in each new play session.
''Master, your joycons appear to be drifting!''
I hope they also redesign the boring fetch quests.
This is all brand new to me...looking forward to picking it up.
@MS7000 So I think at the very least for the gamer that puts their console into sleep mode and doesn't exit out of skyward sword often there should be a great reduction of text boxes since the the play session may be weeks long (except for those gamers that like to change things up a lot),
@Balta666 If they are better games then those same people would had bought a Wii U would they?
Sounds to me like they should have released more amiibo as that's the best place for QOL upgrades.
@HamatoYoshi It looks like it will tie in to Breath of the Wild 2, and some people probably haven't played that since it was released on the Wii. Like how they rereleased Ocarina of Time when they were making Wind Waker.
Loved the Wii game. Looking forward to it.
@Zeropulse That kind of works, but them actually changing it would be better. As you said, people do like switching games up,, even if they generally stick with one game at a time. For example, you're playing the game, then realise a Tetris 99 event is happening. You hop out for 30 or so minutes to play it because it takes your fancy. You then return to Skyward Sword and get told "You got a Jelly Blob!" for the 82nd time. I am willing to bet a sizable amount of players would have scenarios like this still.
A lot of small QOL improvements would make a big difference.
Will she still interrupt us and tell us what to do as we are starting to do that very this?
Will she tell us about percentages every few minutes?
Will she still be annoying the entire time?
Cannot wait - if ever a game was massively underrated it's this one!
The constant hand holding and pop up item menus explaining everything needs to go away. Fast travel thing never bothered me, just every time you pick up an item, having the description pop up is more then annoying, I would not pick up things just to avoid having the menu pop up.
Agree about the Fi and item notifications. It was borderline insanity how interruptive they were. I remember commenting about it on some comment section back in '11, was brushed off and told it wasn't a big deal. Hopefully, fixing those is part of the improvements
If it means Fi finally gets the respect she deserves as a character, I'm down.
@Karst "Here's hoping they've done something about when you pick up an item and that cursed dialogue that shows up every single time."
Every. Single. Time
Clearly I’m the only person in existence who didn’t find Fi insanely irritating. It’s been a decade, but I don’t remember her being half as intrusive as everyone says.
But maybe I just kept my batteries charged more often?
And doesn’t that recurring explanation about items happen in every Zelda? I’m sure it happens in BOTW too.
The issue of needing to reset the motion plus occasionally was annoying, but not enough to spoil the game for me.
But yeah, the Imprisoned battle got repetitive. And overall it felt like there were less dungeons than usual.
It would need a lot of improvements to make me buy it...
I guess I'll borrow it from a friend, of Nintendo doesn't make a demo of course, just to be sure.
@BlueOcean Is it true she is worst then navi?
Imagine they added in more tutorials and directions
@Ghost_of_Hasashi the reason the console sold poorly was not because of first party titles quality. And unfortunately there are still a couple of good games buried on it like the Zelda's or xenoblade. Só let's hope we still have it someday.
New button layouts? Tutorials reflecting these changes? Optional motion controls? Weren't these supposed to be the bare minimum effort you should put on a port?
I never hated Fi
QoL improvements I want to see:
@Josh2396 Very good. Easily my favourite comment of the day.
I'm starting to not want to click on these articles, just like anything involving Pokemon SWSH. People find something they dislike about a game, and then that's all that matter and all they talk about. Doesn't matter if there's anything good about the game, we've gotta scream about tree textures or Amiibo support or whatever.
No one is forcing anyone to buy these games. It's good to call out something you don't like, but seeing the exact same issue over and over complained about and everything else about the game smothered and ignored gets old...
They can add as much improvements as they want, but its still the inferior version due to joycon drift.Even if you use the buttons instead of motion cotnrols, aiming is crucial in this game and drift will mess it up.Basically every item has to be aimed, not just the sword.
I wasn't a huge fan of Skyward Sword (never finished it, actually) but I may buy it again on the Switch just to experience it in 60 fps.
Still seems kind of lacking compared to the improvements made to Twilight Princess and (especially) Wind Waker's HD outings.
@Heavyarms55 They certainly know how to suck the joy out of a form of entertainment, don't they? If gaming causes these people such abject misery methinks they should step away for a while....
This game, along with the DS Zeldas, were the height of what I hated that Zelda became. Forced gimmicks and overbearing tips/help/guidance being the biggest issues (Zelda games seemed to think all players were absolute morons for a while. I've been using bombs for 30 hours now, stop telling me how to use them or thanks for panning over the solution to this puzzle I didn't even have time to look at myself).
I'm still debating whether or not I want to get this port.
Can't wait for all of them to be locked behind an amiibo
But where are the Zeldas we want tho?
I really had to force myself to finish this game after walking away from it twice. Even with quality of life improvements, the overall game design is enough to keep me from picking this one up again.
Admittedly tho, Breath of the Wild may have ruined all other Zeldas for me. I never want to go back to a linear-style entry again, and Skyward Sword is the most linear of all.
Okay, but did they add more stability?
@Pirate1 it will be VERY useful but please I beg for everyone to keep themselves from buying that Amiibo. That fast travel mechanic should be free for everyone.
@Karst If I remember correctly, the notification does not show up every time, just the first time you pick up an item in the current session. So if you want less notifications just finish the game in one sitting 😜
...Do we need amiibos for these too? lol
@HamatoYoshi wind waker is already on wii u that is the only explanation
I thought this was a really great entry at the time, but to be honest it didn't age that well. The motion plus controls were great though and actually added something to the gameplay. But it's definitely not in my top three zelda games. Nonetheless, i still like that character flawed antagonist...
That's great news. Less than a month away now, gonna put my pre order here in soon.
Just for the record. On the wii u you get windwaker, botw, and twilight princess all in hd. Which console is going to beat that..? And you can play skyword sword with motion controls. Just a wii u fanboy speaking.
@Snatcher Navi (Ocarina of Time) is alright because she is quite ambiguous so she acts and talks as she senses. The only problem with Navi is that a few messages are repeated until you go where you are meant to. Imagine that you know that something weird is happening in Death Mountain because she already told you but you want to go elsewhere first, Navi will repeat her concerns about Death Mountain regularly. Despite that, Navi and Tael (Majora's Mask) are good company. Fi is like a Wii safety manual speaker and the worst thing is that the game pauses for you to read the "advice" which is something like "Take a rest", "The batteries are getting low", "Your hearts are running low"... So she's annoying and exasperating and you are forced to hate her until the end draws near and she talks about something related to the story.
Improvements will come in a form of DLC. So exciting
"Master, your joycons appear to be drifting. Would you like me to put you in contact with a Nintendo customer support representative?"
@Pete_Stooge Yep, those remasters, backwards compatibility and Virtual Console are why Wii U still is great. It has everything but it failed and was replaced by Next Wii U 1.5 without backwards compatibility (Switch).
If theres a god they will have ripped out the dowsing mechanic I always hated it
Nope, unless they add new content I'm not paying 60 bucks to play a slightly better looking version of a game I can play on my wii.
In addition to toning Fi down, I would like to see them get rid of a couple of the fetch quests, or find away to turn them into side quests. Maybe get rid of one of the Imprisoned fights. Those changes are starting to add up...
Aight, time for some positivity.
Personally, I had no problem with the motion controls, but I know some people did. The compromise they came up with is honestly the best they probably could have made on any console with a "standard button" layout. Messing around with shoulder buttons for angular strikes like some elsewhere have suggested would be a bit fiddly. Not incorporating the fully directional swordplay would have been a bit of a design headache for certain sections and items, and honestly would lose some of the charm this game has.
I think this change is honestly more significant than most people give it credit for. A lot of people have said that they hated Skyward Sword because they had immense frustration with the controls, which is a fair criticism, and it's why I love that ninty are giving people a choice to go back to buttons. The joy-con motion controls seem fairly solid enough, and I have faith that they'll be as responsive as I found the motionplus to be.
Locking the "instant return to the sky" feature behind the amiibo is a bit frustrating, but honestly, it's not as big of a deal as some are making it out to be. There's only one or two sections where you're both a significant distance from a Loftwing Statue, and would desperately need to get back into the Sky for one reason or another. It is a nice QoL change if you buy the Amiibo, but it doesn't ultimately change much.
Assuming they've toned down Fi's handholding a bit, and changed the "item description displays after every restart" issue a la the TP remake, that'll alleviate most of the actual problems I would expect them to fix with a HD version. They weren't exactly going to restructure the entire game to make it non-linear (which I would argue would lose the essence of the game anyway), and whilst it might have been nice to get a Loftwing speed upgrade, like WWHD's swift sail, it's not that high on the priority list that I'm too miffed about not getting it.
Yes, SS is linear, and very much a product of its time, but it's an interesting partner to Breath of the Wild on switch, as the two represent two very different takes on what a Zelda game can be. Skyward Sword is a run romp, with lots of charm that deserves another chance in the sunlight. And if it's not your cup of tea, it's only another year till BotW2 (probably), so you can just wait for that one.
I'm getting this as soon as I've got the money. I pre ordered the collectors edition of dread.
@Gigagash I’ll be buying two if you don’t buy yours
Im an amiibo collector though.
It’s not an important feature as people make it out to be tbh.
The game worked ok without it before.
@Pirate1 If you’ve ever played a Zelda game that didn’t have BotW-style instant travel, that’s how this game is. I always felt like it had enough bird statues to make travel fairly painless.
The remaster of Mario Galaxy was 60€ and included Mario Sunshine and 64.
The remaster of Xenoblade was also 60€ and included a whole new story.
The remaster of Zelda SS is 60€ and includes... Just improvements.
So does this mean you only have to fight The Imprisoned once now?
I'll be buying it as it's part of the series and never played it , I'm hoping Nintendo will re release the rest of the Zelda game's so I can play them also . I do have it on pre order ☺️
The last thing on that list is music to my ears. The thought of going through the first few hours of this game, with its ridiculous hand-holding tutorial sections was placing me on the fence regarding buying this again. Now if I read reviews and I’m comfortable that I haven’t got to endure that again, I might well pick this up
I do wonder if this is a true remaster (like Twilight and Wind Walker) or an upscaled emulation like Mario Galaxy. I fear the latter.
That said, I thoroughly enjoyed the Wii version, I loved the motion control, especially the bit at the of the game when you have waves and waves of monsters to kill. A bit of extra haptic feedback would improve the immersion.
Glad Nintendo has listened to player feedback - hoping it will deliver on being more enjoyable with button controls and less fi interruptions
@BlueOcean They need a option to turn her off FR.
I always found the motion controls a problem with the Ghirahim battles but think I will switch to standard controls for those brief sections.
Would like it if they improved the speed of the beetle too.
X to doubt this.
I doubt they'll add anything beyond a scalped plastic paywall for that fast travel nonsense and not even upscaling it beyond it looking like emulator nonsense.
If they stop having the game and Fi telling you the same thing and have it so only either Fi or th4 game gives you instructions that will help.
Also maybe make Fi less.... robotic.
I'd actually enjoy it if they gave Fi more casual lines of dialog. Stuff that isn't "tutorial" related, but just maybe have her comment on things in the world occasionally without slowing you down. I liked her as a character, but wished was around a little more outside of the constant reminders.
@HamatoYoshi Why they chose to give us this over Wind Waker I’ll never fathom.
...because Wind Waker HD exists while Skyward Sword hadn't been remastered yet?
@TheXReturns Yes, SS is linear, and very much a product of its time,
A product of it's time? There was another Sky-titled game that came out in 2011 that was very non linear. Personally I prefer linear but that statement made no sense.
I'm picking this up because I never finished the original, but half of Nintendo games seem to be remakes or ports this generation which is very disappointing AND illogical considering they have combined their console and handheld divisions.
£50 for a GBC game with Links Awakening, £50 for a GBA game with Advance Wars, £50 for 3 bare bones ports that anyone can easily play on an emulator for free.
Nintendo sure does love f*****g over the customer.
Mark Hamill!
Alf!
And many more!
Gosh. Please fix the imprisoned fight.
Skyward Sword: Low-Fi Edition
It’s a Zelda game, how many ******* tutorials does it ******* need?
@WiltonRoots I skipped the Wii/Wii u era do to life circumstances so I’m super excited to get a change to play it. Switch is my favorite system ever
It should read, "Worse motion controls due to the lack of a sensor bar on the Switch." Whatever minor improvements they've made to the motion controls will be more than offset by the need to resync your sword and the various pointer controls a lot more often.
I'll stick with the original version.
Oh, yay, motion controls done right! I'll be using the Switch's superior motion controls to swing my sword and block with my shield, just like my favorite left-handed hero Link!!
NINTENDO: well, yes, but actually no. You will use your right hand to swing the sword, like God intended.
But I mean, couldn't you mirror Link for us lefties? Surely video gaming technology has reached that point in the year 2021?
NINTENDO: no, because the whole game is designed around a right-handed experience.
But couldn't you just mirror the whole game for lefties then? I mean, that's literally what you did for the Wii version of Twilight Princess.
NINTENDO: no, it would take up too much space.
But the entire game is only 7.1GB, according to your website. Even with a whole second flipped version it wouldn't use up a whole 16GB Switch card.
NINTENDO: we said NO. You will play with a handicap and you WILL LIKE IT.
No I won't, because I play games to have fun and imagine I'm a hero of legend, not a George R. R. Martin character being tortured for the reader's amusement. Playing with my dumb hand will significantly downgrade the fun level in this game.
NINTENDO: Well, we made a new button control scheme just for whiny babies like you who can't handle the motion controls.
Oh, well, why didn't you say so?!?! I can get behind that. At least it will give me a way to play the only Zelda game I've never played before. I can do button attacks!
NINTENDO: Yes, we thought you'd like that. So, all you have to do to attack is swing your sword using the right joystick...
You're kidding me with this, right?
NINTENDO: Please understand. Making video games is hard.
Any word from Nintendo is this game works with a pro controller while docked? There direct comment seemed to suggest it was joycons or buttons in handheld mode. Worries me.
I still don't understand why people are so hurt about something in the game requiring an amiibo to use. Didn't hear this much of an uproar with Wolf Link in BotW. Anyway, being able to fast travel to the sky from anywhere, including dungeons, shouldn't be included in this game, so I'm happy more people will be able to get the full experience.
I really REALLY wish they had give this a full-blown overhaul a la Wind Waker. A few texture upgrades and some revised tutorials doesn’t really justify the price for me, and I’ve never played the original.
I don't understand why they didn't just mention these quality of life improvements when they were talking about the game at E3. Them bringing up Skyward Sword HD felt so pointless, like they only showed it because they were scraping for things to talk about for Zelda's 35th Anniversary.
Yes, it will have various quality of life improvements, you just have to pay for them
I am hoping that the teleport feature is attainable in an early quest. If it isn't perhaps Nintendo could patch it in, so people can stop complaining about this mistake.
@Link-Hero Yes, it did! Every single pointer command from shooting arrows to menu selections obviously used the sensor bar, and there are Youtube videos that prove that the sensor bar was also used to keep the swordplay from needing to be resynced very often.
No matter how well the gyros have improved since then, they simply can't match that kind of performance on their own (getting anywhere close to 10 minutes before resyncing the sword would be a miracle), especially where pointer controls are concerned.
@Incoherent1 How do you know they haven't?A few texture upgrades and some revised tutorials is all Wind Waker got.
I don't think I'll be picking this game up, though the Zelda Joycons look excellent, if I can find a pair I think I'll grab those.
SS was an okay game - I played the story to completion when I first got it and it was actually the first Zelda game I bought myself. Before then, my brother would tend to pick the games and I'd play for a bit and then back seat gamer the rest of it, but this time I wanted to give it a go myself.
SS has some excellent redeeming qualities, the story is interesting enough, but it's the colourfully designed and emoting characters that really worked well in this game. The dungeons were interesting with some cool ideas applied such as the time stones warping sections of the dungeons.
The game also introduced some features into the game that were a little half baked such as the weapon upgrading, and the stamina metre. These would be updated (weapons switched to armour) in BotW making them less of a nuisance and more or an actual feature of the game.
The worst parts of the game were Fi and the linear design of the gameplay. I love the concept and design of Fi and in the story she's great, but she's Navi on cocaine when it comes to hints and tutorials throughout the entire game. The constant reminder that your batteries are low could have been a simple icon in the top corner, as it was for most other games.
The world design while it looked creative and fun to explore was barren of life. Only having 4 key areas to explore was a huge letdown when you compare it to the three games before it. The game became so linear that it began to feel more like a third party Zelda-lite game.
I do appreciate this game though. I think this was a key turning point in the Zelda teams vision for what this game series is, what works, what has been done too much and how to improve on what is existing. Without this game, I don't think we would have had BotW, I think we would have just had another OoT clone.
Overall, the game isn't terrible, it's just that when you compare it to any of the other Zelda game in the timeline, it is the least fun. Given the option to replay a Zelda game, I'd much rather pick up OoT, WW, BotW or maybe even TP or any of the 2D Zeldas.
@WiltonRoots Wind Waker HD was (from a graphical standpoint) a completely overhauled remake, which is why is looks amazing.
Can they make us fight that stupid worm with legs less times? I felt like that part just kept coming back, and was a huge drag on gameplay.
Oh and stop the cut scenes for rupees every dang time you find a new type of rupee for the first time during that session of play. That got really old.
@carlos82 the graphics on this game look horrible. And the motion control mechanics have affected the graphics as thats why the game looks so weird. I mean just look at those bad guys, ugly!
@Crono1973 which is funny because you get a random bargain priced game from time to time like garage game builder. Their prices are wacky.
I'm buying this on release as i never got the Wii version.
Fi: Master, I'm detecting you have your tutorial options set to "OMG STFU FFS." If you'd like me to provide you helpful information on your quest, you can change this setting in the options menu by pressing +
@BlueOcean @Snatcher Fi was supposed to be Cortana but ended up being Siri.
I actually like Fi in terms of story (even if the whole unrequited love with a sword thing is a little...err...Japanese..... (be quiet, Ryu!)) but Fi as a game element would actually spoil puzzles for you before you got to try to solve them and tell you the obvious while you're looking at it, halting the game for her to do so. When an in-game character becomes the personification of "remember to wear your wrist strap and take a rest" warnings, you're going to dislike that character....
@NEStalgia I don't know if you missed my last comment but I pretty much agree. Actually, although I commented on the story element while avoiding doing spoilers, looking back, one of the two things was shoehorned, at least the Wii safety manual thing.
The "the game is/was fine without it" is such awful counter-argument in regards to the amiibo fast travel thing. NES and SNES games were "fine" without the ability to use save states or rewind, but imagine if Nintendo required you to buy a $25 amiibo to unlock those feature in the Switch emulator.
"Speed up" features, even downright cheats should be expected to be part of the package for old game re-releases for those who already played them. Like when Square Enix re-releases old Final Fantasy games, the put in the ability to run them at 2x speed or max out character levels immediately. These are there for people who just want to play around with games they probably already played without experiencing some of the more tedious elements of old games. People who want the "original" experience can still avoid using them. It would be absurd if they charged extra for those features.
Walking to a statue to fast travel is tedium that doesn't need to be there. Skyward Sword HD is a barely enhanced port of a 10 year old game that Nintendo is selling for $60. If Nintendo hadn't built up such an Apple-like cult of corporate fandom around them, people would already be scoffing at the MSRP of the base game. The idea that you should have to pay more for speed up feature is absurd, even if you basically consider it a cheat that isn't requisite to the game experience.
A few years ago EA and Ubisoft tried charging for what were effectively cheats in full price single player games (DLCs that basically gave you a bunch of money or XP) and I'm willing to bet that some of the same people defending Nintendo for this amiibo garbage would or did crucify other companies for charging for cheats via DLC. Nintendo is doing the same, they're just attaching it to a piece of plastic tat.
So basically they added more hand holding?
Nintendo is going all out this time to make this game a smashing success
@BlueOcean indeed, even now people are getting it second hand and saying i didn't know it was that good of a console. It really is. It was imo the most creative period of Nintendo. But they couldn't sell it. Worst marketing campaign ever. They thought using the wii in the name would help people associate with it, but it went completely the other way, people were thinking i already own a wii, so don't bother
Buy the Fi amiibo to make her shut up
@Pete_Stooge I was a huge Nintendo fan and when Iwata revealed it, he was holding a GamePad and said, "This is Wii U". Immediately, I thought that it was a Wii accessory, a new controller with a screen. They didn't show any console. Worst console reveal ever but the console itself was great as some of us have found out.
@sword_9mm You're stupid if you can say the motion controls suck without playing the game. Completely stupid.
@Incoherent1 Wind Waker was not a huge overhaul. Believe it or not, they changed the lighting and some textures, that's it.
@TheTinfoilTitan You're just describing Twilight Princess. That game didn't even have appealing visuals until the HD version came out, and they still aren't great. It's linear to hell and not even that fun to run around. Not a lot to do except find some rupees and heart containers, as 3D Zelda was. The story was fine but it wasn't super engaging or anything new. Character design was also lacking, or they just aren't that interesting. The enemies and bosses of the game were fine, nothing revolutionary. I still hold to the opinion that the Nintendo 64 games were better than Twilight Princess, which is sad. Wind Waker was a great game. Twilight Princess just seemed to me like something that was made to please those that had unfounded hate for Wind Waker.
@Heavyarms55 I couldn't agree more. I don't really use Twitter much, but if I browse a single Nintendo post about anything (even a completely different game, like Legend of Mana), 75% of the comments are people complaining about their "one thing". Whether it's Skyward Sword's price/Amiibo, the art style for Advance Wars or whatever else, it's the same ragey complaining. It's inescapable.
@Sweetz Save states in nearly 40 year old games isn't particularly comparable to potentially game breaking fast travel in a game that's not even a decade old, with mostly modern design philosophies, with a plethora of remastered improvements. I'm not weighing in on the Amiibo situation in general, I just don't think your argument is sound.
@LillianBunny Hmm, while I agree with you that Twilight princess wasn't as great as the others, I still think it's a much better game than SS.
I would say Twilight Princess is pretty much an OoT clone is just as linear as that game. Still I've always felt that just the inclusion of an overworld where you can choose where to go works better, it at least creates an illusion that you have some freedom. I think TP when you complete one part of the story you do have Midna open the map and point at where to go next, but there are some things you can do elsewhere, not much, but some.
SS has you go back to Skyloft for it to then point at the next destination and there is little to no point in going back to the previous places until you are told to.
Windwaker is my favourite Zelda Game, followed by BotW and OoT. But Windwaker even falls into the trap of your map opening up by itself to then be pointed to the correct location. Id also say that there isn't huge amounts to do outside of just going to those destinations.
Maybe I was wrong to say that SS is bad because it is linear, as many of the Zelda games are, but I think it's more about how well the previous games disguised their linear game play in an open world to make you feel like its your choice.
TP's art is ugly at times, though I think it does some things well - Ganondorf's design is one of the best. I prefer TP Link to SS Link - SS Link looks like he's been out drinking all weekend. I agree that the TP bosses are also very much lacking in any originality - Even the Ganondorf fight is just ripped from WW.
The one thing I find as a shame with WW is that some elements were cut due to time but they left things in that clearly show they should have been there. WW is almost a perfect game but there are times when you go - I wish I could explore that a little more or I wish that this idea was fully evolved. And if we're also looking at the OG game - the Triforce Hunt is awful.
@Lyricana Your definition of "plethora" must be different than mine. The 4 bullet points listed in this article are not what I would consider a plethora (especially with "various qualify-of-life improvements" not being explained at all) and does not justify it being a full price title - but that's the been the case with all of Nintendo's recent ports/re-releases, except Mario 3D World because Bowser's Fury was something I'd actually pay $20 for by itself.
If fast travel breaks the game (which I doubt), then it's pretty poor for that to be the thing you get as a "reward" for giving Nintendo even more money. Either the game benefits from easy fast travel and it should be an included part of the game or it doesn't benefit from it and that makes the fact that they are promoting it as a bonus you get for buying a $25 amiibo pretty crappy. Tying a convenience ability to an amiibo is no different than EA or Ubisoft trying to sell cheats as DLC, which people rightly railed against.
Point was that "the games was fine without it" isn't a good argument for it being tied to an amiibo. It should be in the game, or it shouldn't be an option, period. I mean, I don't like amiibo in general. I think that even cosmetic items tied to limited production physical items in a game not expressly designed around that gimmick (i.e. Skylanders) is bullcrap. If it wasn't for the fact that amiibos are incredibly easy to spoof/pirate, I think there'd be a lot more pushback against them.
@TheTinfoilTitan It is definitely the best incarnation of Ganondorf thus far, until the BotW sequel releases. And you're free to like whatever gameplay style you want, a lot of people like older Zelda games for the open world feeling, but I feel that the artstyle, character/enemy design, music composition, dungeon design and boss design are the best in Skyward Sword. Minus The Imprisoned. The areas are fairly lacking, though I still really like them. I definitely prefer the aforementioned qualities over what Breath of the Wild gave us. It's a great game, just a horrible Zelda game. It was all open world and literally nothing else. Like three unique characters in the whole game. Wanna fight something? Whack a pig or a chameleon. Oh, you want variety? Some are black. Oh, look! That one's on a horse! Also I'm glad the emo freak is out of Smash finally, I personally prefer SS Link, though they decided to go with Mr. Amnesia (who also has a great design).
I forgot what I was going to end this with, so you're opinion is valid, SS is superior to TP, I'm gay, Jesus is a woman, Lucifer does weird things to my butt while I'm sleeping, goodbye.
