Sonic had a mixed 2017. Sonic Mania was amazing, but his "big" game - Sonic Forces - was met with less enthusiastic reviews.
The character remains a cash-cow for Sega however, and we're going to hear very soon what it has planned for Sonic in 2018. A SXSW panel will deliver a “world-exclusive first look at what comes next” for the Blue Blur, and will take place on 13th March at 3:30PM CST.
Sonic is back, and ready to take 2018 by storm. Join the official team from SEGA who are building Sonic’s future as they give you an update on last year’s strong performance of Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces, as well as the world-exclusive first look at what comes next for the fastest blue hedgehog. Speakers include Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka, Sonic PD Director Austin Keys, Sonic Mania Animation Director Tyson Hesse, and Sonic Social Media Manager Aaron Webber. You won’t want to miss this!
It's worth noting that Sonic is a star of page and screen as well as being a video game icon, so this announcement could relate to something other than a video game - or it could be several announcements. Feel free to share your predictions below.

If it's a video game, there's probably a 99% chance that it will look terrible and I won't buy it.
Sonic games haven't looked that bad in a while. It's the gameplay that gets people upset t
If it's another 3D Sonic title hopefully they'll learn from the mistakes they made from Sonic Forces and work on the level design. Hopefully they can add in Tails and Knuckles as playable characters.
Just hope for sonic mania 2
@Kalmaro It's not the gameplay it's the level design in Sonic Forces. It's way too short for a boost game and lack level gimmicks to keep it interesting. Just compare the levels in Sonic Unleashed day, Colours and Generations to Forces and you'll see what I mean.
Thing is with 3D Sonic games is that Sega really don't need to create amazing games because they know it will sell pretty much no matter what, as long as it isn't broken. I mean just look at the comments Sonic fans were writing whenever anyone gave Forces a bad preview or final review.
Would really make my day if Sega announced the Next Mario & Sonic game at the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics. Taken forever it has for them to announce that game, of which I did know would come after the Olympics themselves for a first.
Already?! They work fast.
@CuriousUserX90 They could also talk about that Potentially Leaked Sonic Heroes HD, and maybe even give us more details about that Sonic Movie coming next year.
I'll keep an open mind but bar Sonic Mania their recent record isn't great.
Are we finally going to see something on the long rumored live action / animated movie???
Sonic Mania was so good and well-received by both fans and critics alike that I really really really really hope it has something to do with a sequel or continuation of that. I'm sure there will be other stuff announced and that's great...but there really needs to be more of that.
Hopefully Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 for Switch
If it isn't a decent 3D game, ill have a generations sized hole in my heart
I hope it's a 2D new entry too.
I like several of the 3D games, but they obviously don't fare well, and after they launched Sonic Forces knowing it would be disappointing -I mean, they HAVE to test the games and know when they're not OK-, I'm not confident they'll bring finally something good like Generations. So keep it 2D.
Will be good to see. I'd love another Sonic game where you can play as some the other characters, too.
@FragRed Just like the fans of a certain red-hatted plumber.
I hope Sega learned something from Mania and Forces. Maybe they’re finally realizing what the fans want in a Sonic game.
Sonic RPG
@RogueSkyte I disagree. Even short levels would be okay if they could be beaten with more effort than holding down one button.
I asked Sega Customer Support about the Shadow Costume DLC for “Sonic Forces,” and they said it would be available for purchase at a later date. Maybe one of the announcements will be more DLC for “Sonic Forces.”
I wonder what happened to Sonic?
@TommyTLG My exact thoughts too
Well that and Mania 2
@RogueSkyte
"Just compare the levels in Sonic Unleashed day, Colours and Generations to Forces and you'll see what I mean."
That all of them were different levels of poopy, ranging from atrocious to just blandly uninteresting? The problem with modern 3D Sonic are both level-design AND all of the gameplay.
Sonic Mania 2 or I don't care.
They should have learned form how popular Sonic Mania is and how lukewarm Forces is and act on that.
But this is Sonic team. They wont learn. They haven't learned in years.
Sonic Fantasy.
My prediction:
It will be a new modern 3D Sonic game called "Sonic Legions" or something; they will add useless gimmicky crap and scrap all the good concepts from the previous games! 4/10 - Poor.
I wouldn't say a storm, probably a bit of rain, "sonic will take 2018 by slight rain" or "sonic will take 2018 by annoying wind"
That's pretty much how its been since the 90's bar Mania.
Would personally love a new 2d Sonic with the classic physics but an art style reminiscent of the Wonderboy remake from early last year.
More Sonic Mania and I'm there, anything 3D and it's not for me
If Sonic Mania 2 gets announced, I will (Rule 1) involuntarily empty the contents of my bowel directly into my undergarments!
I’d rather they finally lift the veil on Shenmue HD! The wait is getting obnoxious, and the world has enough friggin’ Sonic games!
Sega needs to focus on properly reviving and expanding, rather than milk a single franchise!
I read that "last year's strong performance" as applying only to Sonic Mania. So it's like, "an update on last year's strong performance of Sonic Mania, and also on Sonic Forces, whatever that game did."
It'll be real pairs of sonic shoes that mean you can leg it at light speed wherever you want to. No boundaries - Along walls, around pipes and over Ferris wheels -it's the future.
Yeah, at this point I'm completely sure I'll never be amazed by a Sonic game ever again. Mania was cool and all (even if it did highlight just how annoying the series's level design has always been to me), but my dream for the hedgehog is a non-retro win. Needless to say, I'm not holding my breath.
SEGA, let someone else take the Sonic franchise to great places. He's popular and we're stuck with bad 3D games.
I just hope that the Winter Games is going to be good, but I doubt it.
Open world Sonic game of BOTW proportions. Or crap. Probably crap.
At least we'll always have Sonic Adventure Battle 2.
I'm still ticked at SEGA for the debacle of releasing Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Part 1 on Wiiware but then not releasing Part 2 on Wiiware.
it's ridiculous when a official fan made game is better than their own attempt sega could make an amazing sonic game if they pulled their finger out of a certain hole and actually did their job properly rather than the lazy attempts they have been doing
@Kalmaro Yeah. They need to spend more time coming up with fun mechanics instead of just going "Dude, what if we make a level in SPACE!!!"
@nab1 Yeah, because Sonic has NEVER been in space before
@Kalmaro I mean, they seem to spend more time thinking about what makes a level cool, instead of on what makes it fun to play. I don't recall a single level in Forces which was genuinely fun, some were just cool looking but pretty repetitive.
IMO they should go the Mario "way", where just moving around Mario in an empty space is fun, and then come up with levels around the mechanics.
I bet it's either a Sonic Mania 2, with ALL new levels instead of ones "inspired" by the old games, or a collection of some sort. I'd take either personally.
I've never been a massive Sonic Fan, it's like trying to play Wipeout the platformer.
Sonic the hedgehog (2006) 12 year anniversary edition incoming.
I hope it's another Sonic and Sega racing games.
Oh no. That's what they said with Project Sonic 2017 and look how it turned out. I'll keep my expectations low.
Good luck to them. After reading some of the involved folks' commentaries last year, I'm inclined to root for them even though my interest in Sonic franchise remains rather peripheral (if anything, I personally owe Sonic Team more for the Feel the Magic/Rub Rabbits dilogy XD). Like I said before, in a technically audience-driven franchise any amount of ability to do what they outlined their belief in, all while the results are consequently screwing with the collective fan scum, is worth its weight in gold. And one of the reasons I expect myself to buy Forces much sooner than Mania.
Modern Sega is a cruel, cruel mistress.
@CuriousUserX90 The Winter Olympics will be over before this conference.
I'm frankly sick and tired of Sega treating Sonic as if it's the only franchise that ever mattered to their fans. They're sitting on the industry's biggest mountain of beloved and unused IPs, from some of the all-time greatest RPGs and SRPGs (Phantasy Star, Skies of Arcadia, Dragon Force, Shining Force, Shining in the Darkness, etc.) to arguably the greatest arcade games ever created (Daytona USA, Virtua Fighter, OutRun, Super Hang-On, Zaxxon, Afterburner, etc.) to a plethora of classics in between (LandStalker, Panzer Dragoon, Streets of Rage, etc.), every one of which would readily be supported by us if only they'd give them a chance. I'm grateful for Valkyria Chronicles 4 (assuming it actually comes to the West), but considering how long it took for fans to get that bone thrown to them, every churned-out Sonic game is met with apathy where I'm concerned.
Sega may associate Sonic with their glory days, but for me it's come to represent a barrier keeping them from ever returning to those glory days as a publisher, and keeping fans from getting so many of the games we REALLY want.
I know this is extremely unlikely, but Sonic Generations 2 would be so cool!
@BenAV What if it's a board game?
Anybody else going to be at the panel itself? I went the last two years, and I had a blast both times. Can't wait to see Tyson Hesse this year.
@MrGlubGlub I'll try my luck with a Sonic board game over Sonic Forces or most other recent Sonic games.
@BanjoPickles
Did you pick up 7th Dragon III, Puyo Puyo Tetris, Tembo the Badass Elephant, either Bayonetta game, or any of the Yakuza games?
Those seem like "expanding" to me.
Sonic Mania was such a departure of how they do things that it's hard to presume the actual Sonic Team is able to measure up.
@OdnetninAges
I’ll give you Yakuza and Puyo Puyo Tetris (Yakuza is one of my favorite franchises). Bayonetta is a great series, but Sega is only the publisher, and the same goes for Tembo.
As a fan since the days of the SMS, it’s nice that they’re still in the game, but they have left 3/4’s of their legacy behind in the process.
I wonder if the Mario team could make a good 3D sonic game.
I want (not demand) a proper sonic and knuckles sequel in style of sonic mania / 1 / 2 / 3. Let’s continue that main story and expand on it.
I was never part of the Sonic Adventure / 3D crowd; I’m in the 2D playformer side of Mobius or Angel Island. I know that’s where all of us fans split but can’t we agree that we have all come back together when Mania hit?
Saw the Sonic Mania screenshot and got excited, more of that please. Sold my PS4 copy of Sonic Forces. I don’t miss it. I really tried to love it, but it just did not keep me interested.
Oh boy another Sonic game that is going to be either hit or miss. If it's not Sonic Adventure 3 or Sonic Mania 2 and just another Sonic Forces or Generations follow-up then I'm not in the least excited. If it is Sonic Mania 2 then please no more shoehorning too many classic zones, I mean bring back a few (Marble, Aquatic, and Ice Cap would be nice but that's it) but there should more original zones than the retro ones. Also no more Green Hill Zone please, if you need to have a starter level, just remake Leaf Zone from Sonic Advance 2 (in Genesis style).
@RogueSkyte Pretty sure the weird physics, wispons and the gimped attempt at classic sonic were a part of the gameplay, to say some of those weren't a problem is just being dishonest.
Please, just leave the dead hedgehog alone.
Hopefully they announce another whitehead game or a new promising fan project (utopia). Unless they revamp sonic team, generations will remain the only good 3d sonic game i've played and mania will remain my favorite sonic game in years.
We just got two Sonic games last year, so they shouldn't be making yet another game...hopefully...
@Hrimfaksi Generations was great though
I love Sonic, and the games are fun, but aim for either a classic Sonic/ Sonic Mania type game, or a game more in the line of Sonic Adventure games.
Sonic Forces wasn't horrible, but the levels where too short, the story at the end felt rushed and unpolished, and the gameplay for modern Sonic felt more on rails.
Don't forget shortly after Generations, they announced a 3 game exclusive deal with Nintendo for Wii U, which gave us Lost Worlds, Boom, ad 2 Olympic games. Could be a similar thing for Switch.
But hey, I'd be all up for a Mania 2.
... I feel like SEGA says this every year. Perhaps one day they will say VF is back.
@TrueAfricanHero You do have a point about the wispon but it's not all bad if anything why couldn't Sega replace the wispon with other playable characters. The burst wispon reminds me of how Blaze played in Sonic Rush. Same thing goes with the Drill wispon with Knuckles, Void with Silver, and the Hover wispon with Tails.
The classic sonic gameplay I also agree is bad and somehow worse than classic Sonic in Generations.
Best to approach anything Sonic with caution. Mania was fantastic, though Sonic doesn't have the best track record. I saw someone mention porting over SA 1 & 2 over to the Switch. I would definitely pick up a collection if they released one. I would also jump at the chance of buying a Sonic Generations port.
Random thought: The Mario & Luigi series did a crossover with Paper Mario. It's a stretch to assume Sonic would be within the realm of reason, but it would make for a fantastic JRPG. I'm reminded of those Super Mario Bros. Z cartoons from Newgrounds years ago. Would be cool, anyway!
Whilst I was really excited for Sonic Mania, and I thoroughly enjoyed the game, I’m hoping it’s not a sequel - it’s too soon. I would prefer that team to work on a different IP such as Streets if Rage Mania.
Looking at the attendees I would assume some sort of animation shorts, maybe for YouTube?
Sonic Adventures 3
Crazy Taxi?
@Kalmaro Yes, the look is fantastic (especially with Forces). However, the gameplay seems to be disjointed (especially with Forces). I still love the enthusiasm and that Sonic gets back up again for another round. An open world might work for a 3D Sonic. People loved that space with the Zelda DLC for Sonic Lost World.
What does "world-exclusive" mean? People on the moon can't see it?
This sounds interesting... I try to get myself excited for more Sonic, but then again, I think I try to hard to like the games. I've always enjoyed any game that involves fast pace as an integral aspect, but Sonic's execution of fast rarely rolled (no pun intended) with me. Well, except, for Unleashed and maybe Generations. I like how they tested your ability to react quickly to obstacles. If we see another boost style game similar to Unleashed, then I wouldn't be too disappointed.
I wish they’d take a year or two off from releases so that the development time would be increased😛
@Matthew010 Thought the event would be last week, my bad.
How about Sega lets sonic die already and release phantasy star online 2 here finally...
@JTMnM There was Sonic: Brotherhood for the DS, but it was ok.
Sanic Mania +
@Kalmaro the thing is that a boost game is more complexe then that
@MAXLemplie huh?
@Kalmaro
Where'd you go?
We miss you so
Seems like it's been forever
That you've been gone
@Ignatius You asked and thus, I am here.
What's up?
@Kalmaro truthful I was just hoping everything is alright and it’s good to hear from you. I miss reading your comments on the NL articles. Is there another site you’ve migrated over to, or are you just taking a step back from the comments section?
@Ignatius I'm good! Didn't know anyone cared.just got caught up with stuff. I used to stalk this place and get the first comments... Perhaps it's time I did that again. I miss being on top of things. Good to hear from you!
