Back in November, it was revealed that the Nintendo Switch managed its best-ever sales week in the UK during the Black Friday madness. Now, Nintendo's revealed more about just how successful that week really was.
The company has announced that more Switch consoles and games were sold in the UK and across Europe during that week – the one starting 22nd November 2021 – than any other week in the console's lifespan. The previous record, Nintendo says, was set back in November 2019.
As was previously thought to be the case, Nintendo's Black Friday Switch bundle which included a copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and a three-month Switch Online subscription helped to drive hardware sales, and Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl helped on the software front selling more than six million copies globally in their first weekend on sale.
It gets even better, too. Nintendo says that November actually saw back-to-back record-breaking weeks for Nintendo Switch software sales in the region; that November 2019 record was technically beaten during the week commencing 15th November 2021, before being beaten again immediately afterwards the following week.
Not bad for a console that's about to enter its sixth year on sale, huh?

In case ppl wonder why they dont heavily discount aaa titles after some time, this prob has to do with it
Nintendo is doomed. It's only downhill from here. Switch is dying. RIP.
@gcunit yes, it's only a matter of time.
Nintendoomed, that new handheld PC was a Switch killa. The Xbox streaming to your phone was a switch killa…..
Brap Brap.
Switch taking shots.
Word up son and to your Mother. (Shout out to any Push Square users on here.)
You'd think everyone who wants one, has one at this point. Insane how it just keeps on selling like hot cakes. It's easily destroying Wii sales. I suppose PS2/PS4/NDS managed the same though. Wonder if Switch will live long enough to surpass those before it's replaced with a successor.
I just sold my OLED for what I bought it for.
@CammyUnofficial Yeah some of these sell several millions per year in the years after release.
If they did something like slash the price in half they'd have to see atleast 2x higher sales. But realistically there won't be enough people to sustain that
If you look at vgchartz.com, in the US, total sales of PS4 and Switch are similar, Japan the Switch has significantly outsold the PS4, but Europe the PS4 has significantly outsold the Switch.
If I was Nintendo, I’d be questioning what’s going on in their European division!
I have a feeling they going to stick with the console they can make in high numbers until the silicon shortages are over. The switch might have a surprisingly long life.
@Inaroomalone Console market in Europe was very small before the PS1. Most console players in Europe started with the PS1 and never left the Playstation brand.
@CammyUnofficial Price drops of games happen when new copies have to compete with cheaper used copies. Nintendo don't have this problem because people rarely sell their Nintendo games.
@thiz- If you don't mind me asking, why did you sell your OLED?
Nintendo Switch has games! (sorry I'm still broken from last night's disheartening Game Awards)
Great games make great consoles Sony.
@glaemay interesting point
I guess this sort of makes up for the painful absence at The Game Awards 2021. Still, Metroid Dread should've won Game of the Year.
Meanwhile, the haters of Nintendo from somewhere...
Nintendo Switch is for babies and losers.
Nintendo Switch has No games.
Nintendo Switch has No 4K and 120 fps.
Nintendo Switch doesn't have fresh from oven AAA games everyday.
Nintendo Switch is Not a console.
Nintendo Switch is Not for real gamers.
Nintendo Switch games are bunch of ****ing idiot games.
Nintendo should goes 3rd party and sold their IP to Sony and Microsoft.
Nintendo is still a loser no matter how big their sales.
And the list goes on......
And like...3 announcements at the VGAs. Man 3rd parties missed the boat.
@Inaroomalone
Vgchartz data is unreliable and not to be trusted.
@Anti-Matter it does have its flaws….it’s an awesome console if you missed the WiiU and like some old games. This year was pretty disappointing.
That said, I am very happy with Nintendo and love the system.
@Anti-Matter Nintendo Switch has no 4K and 120 fps is true though…
its the games not the specs
@Anti-Matter its not that simple imo - those haters do have a point imo. Nintendo consoles don't cater to everyone, call of duty and other popular games either aren't available or play much better on different consoles. And I bet some people would really like to play botw for example but don't want/can't afford to buy a console for just one or two games.
@Inaroomalone If you look closer you'll see that the Switch is selling far more than the PS4 in the US launch aligned, but in Europe every Playstation console sold way more. The PS3 outsold the Wii in Europe. There's nothing unusual going on in Europe.
@Poco_Lypso At the same time no one can cater for everyone. You can't please everyone.
I'd question if people asking for Nintendo to put something out that could play all the AAA games would actually get the Nintendo System. And aren't just doing it because they want Nintendo to conform to their ideas.
It reminds me last gen when the PS4 and X1 got the same games the PS4 would just sell disproportionately higher even given system sales. It's likely why Microsoft came out with gamepass. Because head to head they were straight up getting worse sales of the exact same 3rd party titles.
If Nintendo focused on specs and came out with a 10th gen Gamecube are those players really going to swap over to Nintendo?
@Poco_Lypso
They want to play BOTW, while i have no interest at all in COD. I see no problem here. :0)
@Sculptor Yeah, very very very weird. everyone who wants one has one. You don't see ps4 or Xbox one carry on selling like this. And considering it doesn't have much functionality like other consoles(Web browser, etc), it shouldn't be selling like this for that reason either.
@BrintaPap
True. But let's be real. Unless you're playing something like Rayman Legends the PS5 and XSX also won't give you 4k 120 fps.
@Dr_Lugae
We simply don't know that. If nintendo were to release their consoles with specs on par with ms and sony, it would boil down mostly to exclusive games imo as it wouldnt make any difference where people get their CoD or fifa fix.
Nintendo has been going in a different direction and is trying to reach different audiences - for example the elderly with wii bowling back in the day, lol.
It is what it is.
@Knuckles I have played everything I wanted to play. I was only interested in a limited amount of titles.
Europe is a difficult market for Nintendo.
Besides some countrys, like France, for example.
Master System outsold the Nes
Sega Genesis outsold the Snes
Etc, etc
@IronMan30 Exactly. Prediction will eventually be true… because entropy ‘n stuff.
Nintendo is king
@Inaroomalone Switch consistently outsells PS4 and now PS5 in the US...
But for Europe, Sony was always very strong there, they invest very heavily in marketing in that region since the PS1 era. But Switch is doing very well in Europe, if you compare it to other Nintendo hardware and Xbox
Unlike the PS5 and Xbox Series X Nintendo have ensured there’s been a decent supply of the OLED model
Looks like the Switch sales falling of a cliff like the Wii did is not going to happen, who knows where the sales will end up.
@Anti-Matter,
The haters will always hate, and never understand the wider mass markets buying motivators, so much easier to label them all stupid or easily pleased.
@Inaroomalone
Actually Nintendo’s European division is doing fine but they can’t change history. Before the Wii Nintendo’s approach to Europe was pitiful, entirely treating it like an afterthought. Sony didn’t make that mistake in 1995, so they (deservedly) captured a big part of the European market and held on to it.
It's all about the vast array of games and some good deals. Not to forget the portability factor. It is a unique device, and that factors into the decision even if the intention is mostly to play docked.
@BlubberWhale it will actually happen in the distant future of 2014.
Only got my Switch Lite this year and I play it a lot more than I do my PS4 now. I'm revisiting a few games I played on PS3, running better on a handheld, which still impresses me. Its like the Vita follow up Sony never made, such a great little console. I always liked Nintendo's handhelds. I'll think I'll still want to pick up a PS5 at some point though, for Elden Ring and other new games I'd rather play on a big Screen.
@Inaroomalone first mistake you made was using vgchartz for data analysis.
@rockodoodle
Dude I have to respectfully disagree on software this year. Yes it was not like 2017 or 2019 but there was some major stuff this year that I was really anticipating. We got some major 3rd party exclusives like Bravely Default 2, Monster Hunter Rise and SMT V (finally), we got some solid stuff from Nintendo like Dread and the major AC 2.0 update and DLC (that rebirthed the game for many fans who had played it out). Got some lesser but still good stuff from N with Pokemon Snap, Pearl/Diamond remake and Mario Golf (got a lot better after added free content from V3 and V4), Wario, Mario Party, Brain Academy, Fatal Frame. And then there were some very solid ports of things like World War Z, Doom Eternal, Dying Light, Ruined King LoL, Life is Strange TC, and MonsterH Stories 2. The indie scene has been unreal all year and so has the legacy port scene with stuff like Blizzard Arcade, CasleV Advance, Beyond a Steel Sky. So not sure what world you are living in (maybe one where you don't like many types of games), but this was a solid year all around and really way better than $ony's year. I would say M$ hit second place with Forza5 and Halo releasing here at the end but overall Switch had a far better year than the entire x86 scene put together. All signs point to 2022 being the best year yet, especially if we get Bayo3, BOTW2, and MP4 all in the same year.
@Poco_Lypso
Really the wild sucess of the Switch over the last nearly 5yrs is actually proving all the 'Nintendo should release an x86 box like $ony and M$' arguments wrong. Part of what Nintendo has tried to offer over time is something unique or different. This differentiation fails sometimes (like VirtualBoy and WiiU) and other times its wildly successful (like Wii, DS, and Switch).
I see zero value in the market to them trying to be like everyone else. $ony has dominated the home console segment for many cycles now with M$ struggling to stay relevant at times, especially on a global stage as M$ has really only ever outsold $ony in the US. Personally I hope Nintendo moves on to Super Switch Pro 2.0 because there is nothing else like Switch in the market being a portable hybrid and I love the form factor as it is really the system I always wanted being both a portable and home gamer. Now I just want a more powerful version of the same thing. To me if you want the best of both worlds (minus Sony exclusives) then get a Switch and a Series S with Game pass. Thats the route I went for now as I haven't been able to find a ps5 to save my life this year and really don't care because I have a ps4pro with SSD and still have a big backlog to catch up on.
@QuickSilver88
it depends how you look at it. Think about mario kart wii - wasnt a bad game at all. It was the best mario kart at the time imo. However, mario kart 8 was much better.
Yet, the console that it released on was pretty much on par with the consoles that were around when the wii released. In other words, the mario kart 8 experience could have been possible a lot sooner, given the technology that was available but not used in the wii. Better technology will always open up more possibilities. What developers do with it is up to them. Take doom for example, I couldnt think of a more shallow game. Yet. it has its fans, people prolly won't buy a switch because of it, but some people might buy it because they own a switch, having options is always nice. Doom is an example that doesn't really matter to me, but there might be a game or two that I would like to play which either isnt possible on the switch or has an abysmal port. better technology would have helped here.
@thiz- your loss I love my oled it’s a awesome console you’ve made someone really happy now.
@Outerdragon Good. I am also happy and I also love the console. Doesnt change the fact that I played all the games I like and am bored.
Switch had it's best week of sales ever in Europe 4.5 years into lifecycle, after the launch of PS5/XBox Series.
Goes to show that Nintendo and Sony/Microsoft do not directly compete.
@Poco_Lypso we’d probably still get legacy editions though even if Nintendo had the better hardware specs of all three companies
@QuickSilver88 I am not saying it was completely void. I love the ACNH update, Golf, Wario and Brain Academy ….just not much else interested me as far as mainstream titles. Plenty of cool ports and indie stuff….
@Inaroomalone and in Central and Eastern Europe, the Switch is the first time Nintendo have really tried to market themselves.
I’m currently living in Poland and many people don’t know what a DS or SNES is. There was never any real Nintendo presence until the Switch released.
It will take time to build the Nintendo brand here, and they are doing a good, job (lots of adverts, physical presence in shops) but this is still Xbox and PC gaming country.
@charlieonholiday
thats because they didn't see those markets as profitable. its slowly changing but even nowadays they wont translate their games into eastern european languages.
@Poco_Lypso but the presence is so much better than before the Switch days.
@IronMan30 So we’ve been told… I remain a skeptic. We shall (have) see(n).
@BlubberWhale fair to have that mindset.
Well to be honest.
I realy want a ps5 (because of ff7 remake and upcomming god of war)
But these sony dicks can't deliver.
The price they pay for teaming up with lame chip manufacturers (with lame employees)
Nintendo just work harder and put manufacturers more under presure, i mean the stocked shelves globaly within 2 months after the big shortage because of animal crossing.
