@rjejr
Yeah that’s true. I don’t buy into this “must own” thing.
I buy the games “I must own”, not what everyone tells me I must own.
I don’t really want to keep buying the same old game over and over again because of better graphics.
Twilight Princess on the GC, Wii, WiiU and some want it on the Switch. The exact same game.
Saying that, on the Switch a lot of the games everyone tells me I must own I DO want to own.
@Antray1984
Yeah I am with you on this. When you think about all the features listed, Nintendo have implemented most if not all of them before in some form or the other on the 3DS or other consoles - except maybe voice chat.
However I have even heard about “voice chat” of some sort on some 3DS games but can’t confirm this as I never owned one.
If they have done it’s before why can’t they do it again?
I was pretty sure the Switch would be a massive hit in Japan so I am not really surprised.
Nintendo+Handheld+Japan=successful console.
It’s the USA sales that blew away all my predictions by breaking records.
The harsh reality is however that the WiiU was so poorly received that this news should be no surprise. Every (or most) console has probably outsold the WiiU in less than a year in Japan.
I know I can be annoying but Russia IS the biggest country in the world. Saying it is ONE of the biggest tends to refer it in a top five position rather than THE top position.
I know in this business regions are usually prioritise over countries so it is easy to cross match the two, so it is understandable.
@Marios-love-child
OK, got you. Yes, it is rather silly to indicate that people in the UK do not know what the Switch is.
Hell, my mom knows what the Switch is and that is saying a lot.
OK, that’s an exaggeration. She is however aware of a NEW console you can hold in your hand and play Mario on.
@Pod Strangely enough I was having a chat on another gaming site not long ago with members from your part of the world that confirmed what you said.
Generally speaking the USA and Japan are usually big Nintendo supporters.
Bestselling consoles in USA history is the Wii (45m) and the DS (47m). This with the PS2 being the bestselling of all time globally.
Europe (mainland) is very heavily PlayStation biased.
There is that site that I will not mention here that monitors console sales (and although many mock their figures they are usually pretty close these days) that reinforces this.
Switch sales in Japan and N America are astronomical whereas in Europe it trails quite significantly behind the other big two consoles, namely the PlayStation brand.
This is something that Nintendo must look to balance out.
The DS is at 33m - This is the record sales figure. The GB/GBC is also at 33m - a little less than the DS. The PS2 is 23m Wii is 13m
Other consoles for reference. The GC is at 4m The GBA is 17m The PS3 is 11m
Usually sales are summed from the release date to first anniversary. Then there is the financial year that depends on the company and locale where companies speculate. For most of us and media however, now that it is a new year, it will be “sales in 2018” that matter.
@Marios-love-child
The Switch being popular where you live is not scientific proof that it is very successful in the UK.
I will try to find an official newspaper article from late November 2017 that broke down sales of systems in the UK over the last decade or so.
Yes, you are right, the Switch is doing far better than the WiiU but it is still massively trailing the FIRST YEAR sales of other previous consoles in the UK. Namely the PS4 and XB1 this time around. With three months to go for the Switch full year this is not going to change.
Success is relative with the Switch (Nintendo) in the UK.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I think the clue is in the statement.
The 3rd parties that support the Switch now is very likely to CONTINUE to support the system. EA except. This in itself is a positive because usually after the first year they flee.
What will be truly impressive are 3rd parties that DID NOT pledge support suddenly jumping onboard this year.
Now that Switch users must soon pay a sub fee this makes sense.
I believe standard voice chat should be optional. If you dont want it dont use it and stop moaning. There are those that do. Having the choice is best for ALL consumers.
The current set up seems so backwards.
On the other hand how many huge multi-player games like Battlefield come to Nintendo consoles.
Eight online players in a game like Splatoon is not exactly a mass multi player experience that requires a PC, PS4, XB1 type voice chat standard. Maybe this is how Nintendo sees it.
@TheMadPolarBear
Totally agree about 4K. But look where we are. It wasn’t that long ago that the first graphics card that had the same capabilities as the XboxOne X would have costed you a car.
Full 4K next generation for sure as you said. Maybe, just maybe, even Nintendo. I demand a SLI type handheld/dock.
@Thierry
I really hope they do. That’s what drives progress. Nintendo implemented a whole lot of original concepts in the industry. Others copied and drove these concepts forward.
The way forward is a “powerful” handheld that can utilise additional graphical GPU power and RAM built into the dock when used as a TV console. Sony’s dock may include a Blu-ray player to load the game to the handheld.
That is the console of the future. Either Sony or Nintendo will do it first when cost/performance/power can be reasonably met.
Not long ago they were saying the cost of 4K gaming was to expensive for a console. Look where we are at now.
Just in time for the holidays when many people including myself will be buying the thing.
I bought one at launch but sold it straight away. Now with the priorities in my life over (exams), or stabilised (no pun intended ) like work and family I now have the holidays to enjoy the Switch.
@westman98 That’s interesting information about historic Super Mario Japanese sales. I agree with your prediction.
As for PS4 v Switch the older console has been on the Japanese market far longer and to be honest I doubt it really can compete with a “handheld” in that market.
I am sure the Switch will dominate Japan for years unless Sony launch a miracle handheld. It is the rest of the world that will be interesting over the next year or so.
It looks better than I expected. However fanb sunglasses will make it look even better than the PS4 version for some. These forums always point out the members who you can't take seriously... on both sides of the coin.
Man it feels great to read a post with a degree of intelligence. However here are my two cents.
Frostbite can run on many things but HOW IT RUNS on these devices is the question. I have read from developers themselves that just because a system can run a certain engine doesn't mean it runs it PROPERLY or effectively. It will look better in some cases to run games on an older engine, regardless of the newer engine's scalability.
What you highlight is the Nintendo dilemma that many pretend isn't there.
Third party devs want more power on consoles and Nintendo don't think power is a priority.
Fans think great sales of a console is enough to bring big third party games although the Wii confirmed this as false.
1) It's Nintendo's fault. Why developers continue to gimp Nintendo games is SOMETIMES understandable BUT NOT ALWAYS. They blame Nintendo for NOT giving them enough power.
2) It's the BIG Third Parties fault. The fanboys argument. I do not like agreeing with fanboys of ANY type but I think they have the stronger argument as weaker consoles like PS3 and X360 get full versions.
3) The reality. Why put so much effort into a game that won't sell that well on a Nintendo system?
Nintendo fans keep crying for a game from the big third party devs that isn't gimped.
The truth is if we do get a big budget AAA third party game equal to the other systems and it flops on the Switch, then it's all over. The big third party developers would have proved their point.
Will any third party take that chance to prove this theory?
Apple software work on ALL their current products because of compatible architecture and OS. It is a unified series of products that means one development structure.
Nintendo supporting two completely different systems is not the same thing, it is not unified and each system (Switch and 3DS) must be maintained and developed independently resulting in more work.
Very good for Nintendo. Better than I expected but still a lot of work to do to maintain this initial success.
E3 is now the big focal point.
The big question: Are the third parties really interested in the Switch to put their A list games on it? Not ports from years past (like Skyrim) or their Z games.
Will the ones that do support it with AAA (if any) do it consistently?
Some people love the WiiU but using it recently I now really see how sluggish the OS is compared to the Switch. Come to think of it, even the Wii was faster.
Hopefully I can pick up some more bargain basement software for the WiiU second hand but being in the UK, they weren't that many WiiUs to start with. However sometimes a game does show up for less than £5.
@Julien
I will bet that 1-2 Switch will be packed in come Christmas, at the very latest within a year.
Everything pretty much the same as last week (and the week before) saleswise for all systems.
If this is maintained for a few months Switch will be well on its way in Japan.
There will be obvious spikes as new titles launch but what it is now (40k plus) is a good "base" figure.
To be honest I am not that interested in Japan sales as success there is pretty much a given it being mobile - good to have them anyway.
What I want are N.America and Europe sales info. Unless I keep missing them NL should inform us of these regions every week (or month). Can't be that difficult... can it??
@gatorboi352 The Switch is not a "powerhouse" console and only the seriously deluded (you know, the same ones that will have your head if you said the WiiU was just barely above the the X360) believes this.
It is however a powerful handheld. To deny this is crazy.
If you like to play 99% of your console games on your TV at 1080p+ with Uncharted type (or better) graphics then the Switch ain't for you. It is not capable.
If you want the best looking handheld games, then get a nvidia SHIELD or Switch.
@StuTwo
Yes, you are right, first and foremost the developers must believe that the game will be (or more likely to be) profitable on the console. This is so obvious that it not worth mentioning. It is after all common sense.
The Wii is absolute 100% proof that great sales ALONE do not automatically result in getting the very best third party support. That is an historical FACT. - Edit: After reading your post again I noticed that you acknowledged this.
You made good sense again when you said the Switch crowd won't necessarily buy COD. This is another argument that always comes up, which whilst true, avoids the reality that COD and shooters are not the only third party games out there.
You might as will say that the Switch crowd are NOT into shooters, sports, racing sims and almost every other genre that the third party develops. Apart from shovelware and party games.
I of of course speculate when I say that Sony ( I never mentioned MS) can copy aspects of the Switch.
I am not saying 100% Sony will, I do however believe it is a possibility.
Strangely enough I remember having a similar argument over a decade back when I said Sony will very likely copy motion sensing from the Wii.
I was ridiculed back then. Equally by Nintendo and Sony fanboys.
Those that argue that "power don't matter, look at the past" are seeing in blurred vision.
If power don't matter why do all the powerful consoles now get third party support?
Oh yes, now they bring up that old nonsense about "but the Playstation was the weakest but it still got the games and sales".
Yes the PlayStation was the weakest but at least in was in the same ballpark. The graphics weren't on another planet compared to the Wii (almost always 480p, barely able to 520p max upscale- I think) and the HD consoles. There wasn't the gulf in power as is between the WiiU and the PS4/XboxOne.
I really like the Switch and still think Nintendo has an ace up their sleeves concerning the dock.
Sony can truly grab hold of Nintendo's idea and create a powerful portable (Vita) that becomes the most powerful console when docked by utilising SLI or dual graphics technology built into the dock.
If they can slim down the cost of such a console to a reasonable price I can see that taking over.
The dock can have the disc player and they can implement some secure way of transferring the games to the portable.
Let's face it. Capitalising on the innovation of others is how this whole business works.
@electrolite77 You seriously need to learn how to read. I am not deliberately trying to be disrespectful to you but you seem not to be able to grasp simple English.
Where did I say it was EXCLUSIVE to Nintendo? I said it matters MORE to Nintendo.
Why don't the BIG third party developers come out and say this.
These indie devs can talk up the Switch 'til a pig grow wings but until the big boys put their big games on it, this talk means nothing to most people.
Many indies said the same of the WiiU. They are not going to bad mouth a console they need to keep them in business.
I think the Switch is brilliant but only the most deluded will expect to see anything close to The Last of US or Uncharted graphics on it.
Nintendo developers are so cartoony bias that's all they see in graphics. If it not cartoony it doesn't count. Anything representing a real human in a game is frowned upon.
Why waste time dolling up games for Nintendo gamers. They don't care about graphics.
Just sell them the same game ten times. Easy money.
Many that already bought the exact same games on the WiiU will also buy them again on the Switch. Then there are the newcomers and returners who gave the WiiU a miss now buying the games for the first time. Win win.
All developers should port their old WiiU games to the Switch.
The console is a damn month old, way too early to scream "success" or "failure". That is silly.
Comparing today's sales with an old PS4 that had been on the market for years is just crazy.
Let's see wait and see what happens. For all you doomers it can sell very well.
For all the overexcited fanboys sales can slow down significantly.
Not much difference at all. This bodes well for these type of games on all platforms.
When it comes to "real life" games like Last of US, Uncharted or WatchDogs it would be interesting to see how the Switch matches up... for scientific purposes, of course. Hell, even Call of Duty.
Unfortunately, I don't think the Switch will ever get any of these game types, though. Just cartoony.
It was always going to sell well in Japan. Hell, even the PS Vita which is dead to the rest of the world does great there. Japan is handheld country. Everything about the Switch seems to shout "made for Japan".
Since the Wii home console sales in Japan have nosedived.The PS4 did far better in a Japan than I expected as that was also launched around March I think and is not an handheld.
I expected the Switch to sell even better than the Wii in Japan.
It's the USA and to a greater extent Europe (UK) that I want to see sales figures over the next coming months.
China may the the greatest PC video game market by quantity of players but it sure as hell ain't the biggest console market.
Seeing the Switch is a console and not even bring sold in China (and XboxOne sales there not exactly astronomical), I don't really get that argument.
Also it is the income generated from console gaming that makes America the biggest console market. Chinese games are almost all pirated although they make the most money, which is amazing.
Biggest overall markets according to analysts: China, US, Japan.
Pretty much lost interest in this game a while back. It will now be a port of a port... or at least a port - and a probably rushed port for the Switch.
I will wait and see but will no longer support inferior products.
Need to get them facts right. Nintendo DID allow the use of their most iconic character in the movie.
Hell, Nintendo of the past years would probably have tried to sue Disney simply because the game that features Ralph and Felix is obviously (and well known to be) based on Donkey Kong with Ralph being Kong. Other games heavily borrowed from includes Mario Kart and Halo.
I do agree with you about the Disney sequels though.
Nintendo should stick to their projected sales forecast but increase production to meet demand mainly in the US/Japan.
Early sales also indicated that the XboxOne and PS4 will be head to head during their lifetime (according to the "experts"). PS4 has more than doubled XboxOne sales.
If Switch sales slows down dramatically - and that is a possibility, it will make them look rather stupid.
Come to think of it these reports can be "crafted" to generate interest because it clearly tells the public "we are selling out, everybody is buying one". Nice one Nintendo.

To be in the top 100 after all this time is quite remarkable considering the huge amount of material out there.

This game along with my wii have now been permanently stored away in the attic. Those great memories will last, however.

Japanese lifetime sales on selected consoles.

I am not saying 100% Sony will, I do however believe it is a possibility.
Strangely enough I remember having a similar argument over a decade back when I said Sony will very likely copy motion sensing from the Wii.
I was ridiculed back then. Equally by Nintendo and Sony fanboys.
Re: Talking Point: PS4 Pro and Xbox Scorpio Draw Battle Lines, But Nintendo Goes Its Own Way With Switch
Re: Guide: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Guardian Survival Guide
I figured a lot of that out but wow!! There was a whole lot more I didn't.

@electrolite77
You seriously need to learn how to read. I am not deliberately trying to be disrespectful to you but you seem not to be able to grasp simple English.
Where did I say it was EXCLUSIVE to Nintendo? I said it matters MORE to Nintendo.
Forget it. I can't be bothered anymore. Whatever.
Re: Video: Let's See How LEGO City: Undercover on Switch Stacks Up Against the Wii U Original
@electrolite77
No. I am saying it matters MORE to Nintendo gamers who have no huge third party support.
Common sense dictates this. There are FAR more established developers on the other consoles giving gamers far more games and choice.
Where are the AA and AAA third party games on the Switch or any Nintendo console?
If all you care about are indie games, fine. Last I check they indie games don't sell consoles.
If you can't see this let's leave it there.
Re: Nintendo Is "Getting With The Times" When It Comes To Indies On Switch, Says Image & Form
Re: Square Enix is Considering More Nintendo Switch Releases
I am not really a big fan of Square games but anyone supporting the Switch is good.
Just hope it's not all talk.
Funny that I was only recently reading about the falling out of Nintendo and Square that happened a couple decades or so back.
Then again, who didn't Nintendo fall out with back in the day?

Re: Video: Let's See How LEGO City: Undercover on Switch Stacks Up Against the Wii U Original
Re: Video: NBA Jam Fans Might Like the Look of NBA Playgrounds, Coming to Nintendo Switch
@kobashi100
Yeah, big heads look stupid. Yet another cartoony game fir the Switch. But if the price is right..
Re: Mario Sports Superstars Has Modest Japanese Launch as Nintendo Switch Tops Hardware Chart
Re: Video: Here's How Lego City: Undercover On Switch Compares To The PS4 Version
Re: Nintendo Switch Is Selling Faster In Japan Than The PS4 Did, But Not As Quick As The Wii U
Re: Nintendo Switch Hardware Sales Grow in Japan as Monster Hunter Stays at Number One
@Nintendoforlife
Re: Playtonic on the Development Progress of Yooka-Laylee on Switch
Pretty much lost interest in this game a while back. It will now be a port of a port... or at least a port - and a probably rushed port for the Switch.
I will wait and see but will no longer support inferior products.
Re: Nintendo Switch OS Version 2.1.0 is Now Live
@ArmoredGoomba
Thanks for making me laugh.
Keep them updates coming Nintendo. Was really pleased the newer Switches have the Joy Con issues fixed.
Soon time to buy another Switch to replace the one that I sold.
Re: Wreck-It Ralph 2 Gets a New Name and a Release Date
@Kayfios
Re: Taiwanese Report Suggests Nintendo Expects To Hit 20 Million Switch Sales In Year One
@Anti-Matter
I am so pleased to see that common sense has finally set. You figured out what others are still struggling to comprehend.
Yes, 2M consoles will need to be sold EVERY MONTH to reach that figure.
Even if the year ends March 2018 it is still a remarkable number of consoles to sell.
Re: Taiwanese Report Suggests Nintendo Expects To Hit 20 Million Switch Sales In Year One
