The Japanese Media Create results are out, and last week was undoubtedly a strong one for new titles on PS4 and Vita. That influenced hardware a little too, though the big N still managed respectable results.
In the software charts it's all about new releases on PS4 and Vita, with the first Switch title being Splatoon 2 in 7th place. As you can see in the results Gran Turismo Sport was comfortably number one, while NBA 2K18 had a very quiet release (not surprisingly, to be fair) on Switch.

Moving on to hardware there was a quieter than normal week for the Switch, though it still held onto a narrow lead over the standard PS4. The likes of New 2DS LL, PS4 Pro and New 3DS LL are then way back in four figures. Results are below with last week's sales in brackets.
- Switch – 31,092 (40,803)
- PlayStation 4 – 25,075 (16,933)
- New 2DS LL – 8,449 (10,569)
- PlayStation 4 Pro – 6,203(5,773)
- New 3DS LL – 6,187 (8,369)
- PlayStation Vita – 3,535 (3,938)

- New 3DS – 195 (242)
- Xbox One – 69 (71)
- PlayStation 3 – 50 (65)
- Wii U – 40 (58)
That's the lot for the last week in Japan; the next set of results will be fascinating as, of course, they'll include launch sales for Super Mario Odyssey.

Vita games on the top 10, impressive!
Not for long, Odyssey incoming!
Switch has 4 of the top 5 "not new" games though. Not concerned.
The calm before the storm...
Every time I see the Japan Xbox One sales, I can't help but chuckle.
GG Sony-chan.
Nintendo seems to be doing really well in Japan. The lifetime sales of Splatoon, MK and Zelda are all pretty decent. As others have already mentioned the big one will be when Mario hits tomorrow.
No doubt they held back Switch stock for this weekend! Also, Zelda has performed quite well in Japan so it seems and that's just the Switch version.
The PS Vita seriously needs to die already, that thing is outdated and every games that are currently out for it are nothing but waterdown ports. Kinda odd how PS4 needs it's 4K brother to help combined sale just to barely beat the Switch in numbers. Still impress that the Xbox One is now doing the 69 in Japan and still beating PS3 and Wii U.
Mario Odyssey on Friday. As everyone has said, is gonna throw this whole chart off the rack. And Nintendo has been really pushing the game in Japan. I live here in Japan and my local mall replaced the entire Wii U section with just Mario Odyssey. Wii U got moved to a corner in the back lol
The original 2DS is above the Xbox One on sales in Japan. That's incredible.
mario odyssey says hi.
40 proud Wii U owners about to dig into Mario 3D World and Wii Party U
Did @SLIGEACH_EIRE leave and not tell anyone? He hasn't posted since last Thursday?!
@Spoony_Tech I noticed it too. Dare I say, I miss him?
@Spoony_Tech , @SLIGEACH_EIRE has more than likely finally given in to purchasing a switch.
He consequentially lives in his basement fumbling with his joy cons like the rest of us. Deleting and modifying hateful switch comments long past, consumed by regret. He is a joy-con boy now.
That's what my friend's pet gold fishes uncle who works at nintendo told my co-worker anyhow.
@JaxonH
I've been reading all the comments in the reviews with all the great games that came out for Switch (and 3DS) this month. Most of us are wishing we had enough money and time to buy and play all these games. Too many at once breaking our banks, not enough time to play them all! Add amiibos to the mix and we can't even afford to eat ramen noodles.
Indeed, we're all saving for the big one!
@JaxonH @VinnieMii His full time job might as well be playing games lol. It would seem he plays at work about 75% of his time on the clock.
@VinnieMii @Spoony_Tech
I kid you not, but from the time Fire Emblem Warriors released to the time Monster Hunter World drops (Jan 26th, 2018) I am spending $4000 on gaming related purchases. Just Xbox One X ($500), my Japan-imported Monster Hunter World Rathalos Edition PS4 Pro ($550 after paying for shipping forwarding service), and collector editions of MH World for PS4/X1 at GameStop ($350 grhhh, GS exclusive means no 20% GCU discount PLUS tax and $8 shipping each)... just those 3 things alone equal $1400. The other $2600 are all mostly Switch games (2 CE's of FE Warriors plus a sealed copy of each version for display shelf, same for Xenoblade 2 + Pro Controller- dang I hate being a rabid Fire Emblem, Monster Hunter and Xenoblade fan- it's expensive as all heck), though there's a few PS4/X1 games tossed in there like Ni No Kuni 2 Collector Edition (even after 20% off, still $160), amiibo (Zelda and Mario and Fire Emblem add up to well over $100 just for amiibo alone).
I cried when I realized how much I was spending for this 4 month period. Thankfully a good chunk of that expense will have passed by Thanksgiving. Give me 2 months to replenish funds for MH World (which, the $550 system expense in Dec plus $330 Collector Edition expense in Jan is $900 related to that one game)
Good to know Evil Within 2 is getting some love in Japan.
@retro_player_22 why? No true reason for Vita to die in Japan yet considering even PS4 has a hard time with the Switch.
Why even care, just leave it (PSP had a long run in Japan too in the same style)
@JaxonH Far out. I wish I had the kind of money you do to invest in gaming. I'm struggling to scrape together money just for a few Switch games over the next few months. Consider me envious.
@Spoony_Tech @JaxonH
Well, I'm at the comfort of playing for a couple hours a day and maybe a little more on the weekends. But I am a collector, only at a humble 1100+ games.
Yeah, I've spent thousands on Switch stuff since I got one in June. I even went as far as importing a set of green and pink joy-cons and straps (that pink strap was STUPID expensive, damn).
At this point, I have to take a step back. The list of games is far too great for my wallet. I had to skip on the Special Edition of FE Warriors and just got a regular copy to save money. I only payed $40 on Amazon because I pre-ordered it and used some of my earned points as well. But still, I got Chrom and Tiki amiibos, too. If Mario Odyssey wasn't coming out so soon after, I would have bought the New 3DS version of FE Warriors as well.
I'm eyeballing Nights Of Azure 2 right now, but wait...Xenoblade 2 and an awesome looking Pro Controller for it, Doom, Skyrim, Sonic Forces, Oddysey Wedding Amiibos, 4 new Breath of the Wild amiibos, Shovel Knight amiibos, another River City game for 3DS, the Mario Red Joy-cons, oh...and a ton of e-shop games are looking pretty good, too...
sigh Suddenly, those ramen noodles look tasty.
Very nice job by the PS4. 4 years in and still moving +25k in a week is amazing. Also, the evil within is a fantastic horror game - could need to push back starting Wolfenstein 2 till i finish it.
Mario will be epic
@JaxonH @VinnieMii Oh you went and did it, Jaxon will now talk you into getting Nights as he's been campaigning very well for it lol. He's almost got me buying it and I had no interest.
@Spoony_Tech @JaxonH,
Yeah, it looks like a Warriors game, but with a lot more story and RPG elements. I'm already sold on that. But this Holiday BOOM of games coming out is forcing me to make sacrifices, lol. Having a hard time making decisions.
@Spoony_Tech @VinnieMii
I love my pink/green joycons. They stay on the system 24/7
Nights of Azure 2 is pretty good. I mean, it's a JRPG so know what you're getting but, I love a good JRPG and have been craving a more traditional style like this for a while.
Cheers to ramen. I bit off a little more than I can chew this time. I typically spend about 4 thou for gaming in an entire year. Sounds alot, and it is, but spread out over 12 months is only a couple hundred per month, and with games releasing on all systems + collector editions, special controllers, amiibo, etc, it's not that much really. $150 a paycheck, which is not bad for a side hobby.
But this... ya. This Q4 is straight up murdering my billfold.
@JaxonH You left out how much money you were saving w/ GCU, that's always my favorite part. 😆 Though I suppose all that hardware, and especially the overseas imports, are MSRP. 😢
You have all 3 Mario and all 4 Zelda amiibo on order? I know you were cutting back a bit, I think you gave up trying to 100% amiibo anyway, but some of those are kinda cool.
You should invest about $2,000 in security, b/c one of these days your place is gonna get jacked while you're at Switchworld. I hope you at least have receipts and renters insurance. SLIG might be on his way there now, it would explain his abscence. 😄
@Spoony_Tech You think they banned him? Is he on twitter? There's about a dozen guys from here I come across on there but I don't think he's one. Maybe he's just on vacation? I try to avoid this place while I'm away, it gives me agita. I need to take about every other week off from PS, it's crazy over there. I keep telling myself I'm not going back, but I always do.
@rjejr
Lol, I couldn't tell. He has the privilege of being on my blocked list.
I still buy every amiibo, but I gave up on collecting them sealed. Once the Smash Brothers line finished I was done with that. Have the entire set boxed up in mint condition which I may end up selling but I may just hold onto it for 20 years and sell it then. We'll see. I like displaying amiibo open on a shelf now. And it's a lot less stressful not having to worry about the condition of the box- seems like when I was obsessed with condition every single box sent to me was crushed. Now that I stopped caring they all come in mint condition (of course).
I wanted that MHXX edition Switch from Japan so bad, but I want the Rathalos PS4 Pro even more (actually comes with a slick controller I can use, and the system looks way nicer to display). So there is at least one example of a purchase I decided against in lieu of spending so much this holiday season.
Have you played Fire Emblem Warriors? No, of course you haven't. You still don't have your Switch. Well let me know once you do so I can start selling you on games again. Maybe we'll begin with Nights of Azure 2, since that seems to be the latest release I've been peddling around the block 🤑
Slow week for the Switch. Calm before the storm.
Launch & lifetime sales of all 3D Mario games:
Super Mario 64: 162,000 / 1.649 million
Super Mario Sunshine: 280,000 / 780,000
Super Mario Galaxy: 256,000 / 1.026 million
Super Mario Galaxy 2: 338,00 / 1.046 million
Super Mario 3D Land: 345,000 / 2.111 million (physical only)
Super Mario 3D World: 107,000 / 614,000 (physical only)
My predictions:
Super Mario Odyssey: 350,000 / 2.0 million (400,000 / 2.3 million including digital)
You have to read between the lines, though. Yeah, Sony is dominating the top ten THIS week, but look at the sales numbers! With the exception of Gran Turismo, the games sold between 19-40k units. How many of the games will have staying power? How many of the games will slide down the charts once Mario Odyssey is released? Also, another thing to take into account is that there are probably people who have held off from buying the Switch until Mario and many may end up buying more than one game (I did. I picked up Zelda and Splatoon because, you know, variety).
What it comes down to, though, is staying power. How many of those games will move Splatoon 2 numbers (I'm honestly amazed that the game, good as it is, far outsold both Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe).
@JaxonH
Love the green/pink as well, but I wish they would make the reverse matching pair like they did with the red/blue. I have all the Joy-con colors (with matching straps) and Pro Controllers released worldwide until now. I saw the Mario Red ones on the Nintendo Direct and flipped the bird at my TV screen because the pair only comes with the Mario/Switch bundle. I will get them as soon as they are available otherwise and hopefully with matching straps.
I think I spent just about as much as you did on games this year, but I'm geared towards retro-gaming and almost strictly Nintendo consoles and handhelds. (I also have a PSP and Vita collection that I'm building. Getting Ys VIII for X-mas). I added greatly to my SNES collection earlier this year. That can get super expensive, but the most I spent on a game was $75 for a copy of Super Mario RPG w/box.
I skipped on a few amiibos because I thought that some of them did the same thing. But now I'm noticing that some of the games need specific ones to work. For example, the DK amiibo for the 'Smash' series is fine as an alternate to the 'Super Mario' series for some games, but only the 'Super Mario' series amiibo works on 'Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions' for 3DS. Now I wish I had both. So, now I'm only a few amiibos short because I thought they would be duplicates. I at least have all the characters (minus BoxBoy).
BTW, you're looking to get ALL the amiibos? Did you get the Skylanders ones? Don't forget the Dark Editions. You have to buy the Skylanders Supercharger Dark Edition starter sets for both the Wii and Wii U if you want those (probably being sold loose on Ebay, though).
Cheers!
@JaxonH I'm interested in nights of azure 2 but cancelled my pre order because between fire emblem and Mario I didn't think I'd have much time to enjoy it. From everything I've seen it looks kinda hack and slash but I've heard others describe it as an RPG. What's your take on it Jaxon?
Now that the real games are out, the Switch suffers
@Menchi187
Four new PS4 games were released this week that topped the charts, including the newest entry in Sony's biggest first-party IP, and all the PS4 could do was muster hardware sales a few hundred units more than the Switch during a slow period before the Mario Odyssey storm.
"Switch suffers" my ass...
Please sir, can I have some more Itadaki Street/Fortune Street?
Wondering if sales figures will include downloads I'm sure will be massive
The calm before the Odyssey.
@MrA-Game Do they call you Knuckles?
@retro_player_22 Not sure what you mean by PS4 needing the Pro to beat Switch hardware sales. They are different SKUs, but are effectively the same console. The jump in processing power and price aren't great, so new entrants to the PlayStation ecosystem would be better off buying a Pro over the standard model. Maybe I read your comment wrong, but imo you could and should lump the two together. Anyway, competition is healthy. Not too bothered who ends up on top as long as they are both doing well : )
@Spoony_Tech Writing new material maybe? I miss his taunts.
Slow week but we all know what next week's charts will look like. Can't wait for the damage control that will be coming from the PlayStation fanboys/Nintendo haters.
I don't know what they expected with GT, FF & DQ, and the much-starved horror genre getting releases--it's like they didn't want to compete with MO and Pokemon.
@westman98 wow that guy's reaching...
@westman98
That’s interesting information about historic Super Mario Japanese sales.
I agree with your prediction.
As for PS4 v Switch the older console has been on the Japanese market far longer and to be honest I doubt it really can compete with a “handheld” in that market.
I am sure the Switch will dominate Japan for years unless Sony launch a miracle handheld. It is the rest of the world that will be interesting over the next year or so.
@JaxonH Is that a Secret of Mana reference?
@VinnieMii
Yup. I have the Dark editions of the skymiibo.
Ya know, those red Odyssey joycon can be ordered from Amazon Japan, and it comes to the exact same price as if they released here. I got them even cheaper (ordered early, price guarantee).
Not a retro guy. I am, but VC only. Got enough systems hooked up for current gen. Don't have space or money to dive into collecting classics. I made the cut off at GameCube. So GC, Wii, Wii U, DS and 3DS, have a nice collection. Stopped buying for Vita. Just lost interest in that system once Switch released. Any stragglers for games on that system I'll get on Switch first, and if not on Switch then PS4.
@Menchi187 Sure bruh. Like this for example: http://www.metacritic.com/game/switch/super-mario-odyssey?ref=hp
Do you have any other valuable input? Because I must say, with the other Irish clown gone I get half the amount of salty tears I need.
@JaxonH Well I could have played FEW on the 3DS, but my kid and I decided to wait for BF sales after I fixed his w/ a Q-tip and some rubbing alcohol. Switch is hopefully sitting in the back room at Gamestop as I type this, I'm going to swing by later just to make sure. FEW is on the wait list though. Every game w/ a season pass is now on a wait list until a complete edition releases. Otherwise I pay for it, then dont' go back to the game. I'm seriously considering deleteing FFXV, it's 76GB, but episode Ignis isn't due out until December and I already paid for it. And I keep looking at the Horizon Zero Dawn box, waiting until Nov 7th in case they update the entire game when the DLC drops. So I'm waiting on FEW, waiting on M+Rabbids. Thank goodness Mario seems complete. I'm waiting on Ni NO Kuni 2, it's Jan 2018 w/ 2 drawn out DLC packs. Dreading an XC2 season pass b/c I need that game Dec 1, it's my reason for buying a Switch. I assume they're waiting until after Mario to tell us about it. No amiibo though so that's good.
So you have every amiibo, even all of those AC ones? And the Japan only ones - MH Stories were some of the best looking ones. And all the skins like gold and silver and pixel Mario? All 11 Link? Why does Link even need 11 amiibo, shouldn't 1 Link amibo have worked in every game? I'm guessing you aren't counting those blind pack cards, Mario Sports and AC, even you must have some limit.
We're still at 17 I think. The SMO review today left out what the 3 new amiibo do so I'm not sure if we need them or not. Or the 4 new Zelda Champions in the DLC.
Nights of Azure isn't going to happen, if it weren't for you I'm not sure it ever even caught my eye. I have very selective eyes these days. And horrendous short term memory. If it isn't AAA it's lost to me.
So when I pick up my Switch do we need to exchange friend codes or something like on Miiverse? SMO has online leaderboards for some strange reason, so I figure I'd look you up.
OH snap there is a new Itadaki Street?! rushes to play asia
Xbone is climbing that ladder!
