It's the middle of the week, which means we have the Media Create chart results out of Japan showing the top-selling games and systems in the country. There are a few new releases across various systems, though nothing has changed in the number one spots.
Starting with software we still have Capcom's Monster Hunter XX (Double Cross) leading the way on 3DS, with two PS4 newcomers then in the following spots. Mario Sports Superstars secures fourth place with a relatively modest 32,416 sales, while The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the leading Switch title in fifth place. The top 20, with lifetime sales in brackets, is below.
- [3DS] Monster Hunter XX (Double Cross) (Capcom, 03/16/17) – 127,721 (1,256,480)

- [PS4] Grand Theft Auto V (Low Price Version) (Take-Two, 10/08/15) – 5,066 (313,920)
Moving on to hardware we still have the Nintendo Switch in top spot, though after gains last week it's gone back to week three levels of sales. It's still well ahead of the 3DS LL (XL), which squeaks ahead of PS4 in second place; the results are below with last week's sales in brackets.
- Switch – 45,509 (78,441)
- New 3DS LL – 25,719 (29,771)
- PlayStation 4 – 25,006 (25,472)
- PlayStation Vita – 7,780 (7,574)
- 2DS – 6,240 (6,722)
- PlayStation 4 Pro – 5,051 (5,261)
- New 3DS – 1,995 (2,866)
- PlayStation 3 – 1,724 (2,930)
- Wii U – 449 (411)
- Xbox One – 187 (115)
A decent week for Nintendo we'd suggest, as we didn't expect Mario Sports Superstars to deliver outstanding sales - the results are even better for Capcom, though, which continues to notch up strong sales for its various Monster Hunter iterations and follow-ups on 3DS.

Another good week. Switch & 3DS sales combined are higher than the rest of the console market, combined.
Good sales for Switch, i hope that Mario Kart will sell enough to bring Switch costantly in first position.
Just came from posting the figures in the forums. Decent sales for Switch in terms of hardware. Doubt Koei Tecmo are jumping for joy over those Musou Stars sales figures though. Actually all the new Switch entry games have rubbish sales.
Total Switch hardware sales in Japan now stands at 565,013.
I hope these decent sales for Mario Sports means that NINTENDO WILL MAKE BIGGER BUDGET SWITCH ENTRIES!
that's honestly more sales for superstars than I thought it would get lol
Another week, Switch still running strong.
Looks like switch was more of a zelda selling console. I do not see much on the horizon to help it sustain much momentum. It has already started with a game drought. Zelda released march 4th and a rehash mk8 releases almost 2 months later. I already have mk8 and do not care to repurchase. That means i may not see a game i like for 4 months.
@telecaster24 Don't forget Lego City Undercover. Switch's 3 first big games are Wii U ports. Zelda: BOTW, Lego City Undercover and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Amazing!
Edit: Sorry Japan, you've to wait until June 29th for the Switch port of Lego City Undercover. It's out in the West now though.
Mario strikers would outsell FIFA on the Switch, imo.
It's waiting for Fire Emblem Echoes for the 3DS on April 20th and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Switch on April 28th.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE just not really my type of game. I am sure its fun but at this moment switch has like hardly no options besides indie game announcements. Triple A games seem like they will come to switch at a very slow pace.
@Jaredfrogman nah fifa is way to massive internationally and releasing on multiple platforms. Mario strikers is just a more kid family friendly version of the sport. Much smaller market
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Remember that a lot of people did not own a Wii U. I think a lot of people went away after the Wii era and are now coming back to Nintendo. I do think it's a bummer for Wii U owners these early months with the Switch, but I really think the situation will change within the first year.
This is when comparisoning Switch sales to sales of ither platforms will get interesting, as we enter Month 2.
Wii U, PSV, and PS4 sales fell off a cliff after this point in their lifecycles. 3DS sales also declined, but much more slowly.
I'm amazed Mario Sports did that well. But I suppose there were few new releases to compete with
Do we know how much Switch sales are being determined by stock issues at this point? Not everybody wants to get up at 5AM and drive 30 minutes when they can just wait a few weeks and drive 5 minutes after school or work. And at least some of the Japanese probably have "summer" circled on their calendar waiting for Spla2oon.
Looks like Mario Maker on the 3DS passed 1 million sales last week, suprised Nintendo didn't tweet about that. I recall a lot of people saying the weaker water downed port would never sell. 1 million is selling, period.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Unless if the Japanese gamers don't mind with English text.
They can buy USA / PAL version if they want.
Ouch, that's a significant drop for Switch. Are we still using the "it's not restocked yet!" excuse or are we slowly starting to accept the truth of its failure?
Excited for Musou Stars but not enough to put down Zelda.
MHXX actually isn't doing amazing for series standards-- after three weeks it's at around 1.5 million units, when both 4U and Generations/X broke 2 million during launch week.
@Yasume
Lmao
Educate yourself first about the meaning of Supply vs. Demand. It's Econ 101.
The 3DS sold 50,000 during this same week in its lifecycle. Guess that thing must have been a failure too. "Only" 22 million units sold in Japan LTD...
@Equinox
The Wii U sold 20,000 and 13,000 units during Week 6 and 7 respectively. By Week 15-ish, weekly sales had dipped to 10,000 and below. It was pretty clear by then that the Wii U would struggle greatly. The PSV and PS4's sales pace was even worse during their post launch periods, though both of those platforms had better legs and thus ended up selling a bit more than the Wii U.
I have seen some Japan preorders numbers fot MK8D and they are quite high. The Switch should have much better legs and momentum going into Spring and Summer as we approach the release of MK8D, Arms, and Splatoon 2.
@Yasume
You can't sell something with same amount over and over again. There is sometimes you can sell more than last week, sometimes no buyer at all. It was NOT a sign of Failure. It just so Natural in Business.
Btw, Monster Hunter XX is really a "Nintendo Beast".
The sales still crazy.
2DS and New 3DS needs a little Boost to overselling PS VITA and PS4 Pro.
Keep going, Nintendo !
@telecaster24
But we knew that would be the case. It was very unlikely that Nintendo would tell us "Hey, also these games would launch within first month" after the launch. If someone owns Wii U they could safely wait until xmas (Super Mario Odyssey).
@Yasume Accepting the truth of its failure? Are you nuts?
I would have totally bought Mario Sports Superstars if it was on the Switch. Port it over Nintendo with improved everything.
@Yasume it's been out for a month bb. Calm down.
Lol. The only hardware that sold more this week than last week was Vita, Wii U and Xboxone. Don't you just love the Japanese market, it's all forest gump and a box of chocolates
@Yasume I'd explain the concept of supply constraint to you but your little brain might explode then. Trolling every switch article in your pathetic attempt to demean other people's enjoyment doesn't make you look good, FYI.
@Equinox "sales in Japan are definitely stock related"
Thank you. I figured as much, but the article didn't mention it. I wonder what it might sell w/ a steady supply? They'll never keep enough in stock once Splatoon 2 hits. I remember Wii being out of stock in New York for almost 2 years. Hope I can get 1 for Christmas w/o camping out.
Like some people just don't like Nintendo for some reason.the price is fair couple games coming and you could take with u wherever u go.Third parties don't want to make good games for switch for what,who knows.I think you make a good game it must sell u make a bad game and it won't
I love the horse racing and raising the horse and the little quests you go on to build up your horse. Its a pretty fun game. Golf and Tennis are pretty much carbon copies of Mario Golf and Mario Tennis from earlier releases but feel more like about half the content of those games not full versions but they are still vey good. Its an excellent game. I kind of dont expect it to do very well in North America. I hope it does as all 5 games are online multiplayer and to me just having the decent horse racing game wqs worth the purchase.
Got to throw this out there. Monster Hunter is such a beast worldwide. Crazy the way it outsells Zelda. Im not a big fan of Monster Hunter even though I try to be. I think the gameplay is just to fast paced for me and it kind of stresses me out to play it. I do own all of them on 3ds and will probably get the new one too when it releases.
@Yasume 3 years from now come back here and make your 1 post about how much of a "Failure" the Switch is or was. You are going to be so wrong and out of touch. The Switch is breaking all records worldwide right now and has blown away the critics. My prediction is Switch will become Nintendos best home Console ever. It certainly has started off like crazy. You need to get in touch. Why even post such things. You wont catch me at xbox's or ps4 websites saying those are failures. In fact I think either one of those systems would be fun to own just like the Switch is
Oh, Switch only sold more than ALL Sony and MS offerings combined. Yep, that's one hell of a failure. Nintendo clearly have NO idea what they're doing.
The console is a damn month old, way too early to scream "success" or "failure". That is silly.
Comparing today's sales with an old PS4 that had been on the market for years is just crazy.
Let's see wait and see what happens. For all you doomers it can sell very well.
For all the overexcited fanboys sales can slow down significantly.
@Hotfusion None of it necessarily means anything in the long term. The Switch could definitely see a drop in between big games, and turn into a failure. But it could also do great, and it's off to a very nice start. The problem is there are people who decided it was a failure before the thing even launched, and they take every opportunity to say so no matter what news comes about the Switch. The fact is it's selling very well right now, and it's got another big game coming in just a few weeks.
(Aaaaand yes, it's a port of a WiiU game. But there are plenty of people, me included, who never bought a WiiU. For us, it's going to be great).
@Equinox "Id say the best thing to do is if you see a console around late september get it if you absolutely want it in Xmas."
Thanks for the advice. My plan is to finish up a few games on my new Xbox One - mostly just Rare Replay and Gears of War, I can get the rest on my PS4 - then trade it in when I'm done towards a Switch. In a perfect world the timing will be right for a Black Friday deal so I can trade it in and put Switch under the tree for my kids for Christmas. We'll see how it goes I guess. I can't really start thinking about it until I see what happens at E3. Probably will be a lot easier for me in NY than in Japan though.
