Re: Free-To-Play Puzzler Gems Of War Is Out Now On Switch

Highlar

For those worried about 'neccessary microtransactions'.._there are none. Would it give a bit of a leg up? Yes. Is it NEEDED? Not at all. Yes it will take longer to level your troops etc without spending real money, but in no way do you have to. I've had accounts on mobile and ps4.._and now on Switch. I personally spend $30 to get to VIP 3, and support the devs, but its never necessary .

Re: It Looks Like Hi-Rez Studios Is Bringing Realm Royale To The Nintendo Switch

Highlar

@ThatNyteDaez

Actually, if you've tried Realm Royale, you'd see there there is plenty that separates it from Fortnite and not just a "lazy clone" game. For one, when hitting 0 health, you don't die immediately. Your character first goes into one of those chicken forms, where if you run around and last long enough your fighter comes back alive, albeit with less health than full. For another thing, the skill system is something Fortnite doesn't have at all. Inside chests and such in Realm Royale you can find skill tokens. Players have to decide which skills they want to take and use, though, as you have a limited set of them (weapons, movement abilities, etc.) Yes, there is no building mechanic in this game, but it is not just simply a "Fortnite clone".

Re: Random: Is State Of Play PlayStation's Take On Nintendo Direct?

Highlar

Are Sony and Microsoft both shamelessly copying Nintendo this week with their own "Direct" style video presentations (Sony's "State of Play" and Microsoft's "Nindies-like" presentation)? Sure they are...everyone can see that. But also...who cares? Its a business decision, and one I'm surprised the other two of the "big 3" gaming companies didn't adopt a while ago, even with having an E3 stage show. I think Directs have been a huge success for Nintendo...garnering hundreds of thousands of views...allowing the company to share info throughout the year and keep people excited about their products...also remind people of what they have coming up all through the year. Its great for the company...its great for the fans....its great to maintain hype year round. To be honest, I expected Microsoft and Sony to do this before now, but I think its a great way for an entertainment company like these are to keep their products fresh in fan's minds. I will be watching both (even though I don't own an Xbox) just to see the gaming news from the other giants in the industry. This is good news.

Re: Nintendo Download: 21st March (North America)

Highlar

I get Gems of War on any device it comes on...sigh...seriously addicted to this game (have it on my PS4, phone, and tablet)...so this is a definite "buy" (since its free to play) on Switch. I've been wanting GoW on Switch since the thing first came out! As for others on the list...already got Blaster Master Z2...and picked up several other indie games in the sale that I didn't have before (but aren't on the list here). Also, had to finally break down and get Crypt of the Necrodancer to see what the play is going to be like in Cadence of Hyrule (which I'll definitely be getting...looks great). Still on the fence on getting FFVII again. Thinking of saving that money up for FFXII when it drops next month (since I already have Dragon's Dogma and Ace Attorney preloaded and just WAITING to go live).

Re: As Cloud Gaming Steals Headlines, Nintendo's Latest Japanese Ads Highlight The Strength Of Switch

Highlar

As most have turned this into a discussion of Stadia vs "traditional consoles"...I'll give my take on the commercials themselves. I think they are great. Short...but sweet and to the point: play games on Switch ANYWHERE and with ANYONE. I also really like how the only spoken words in the commercials were just "Nintendo Switch". I don't exactly know how...but it really gets the point across to me, just having those simple words spoken at the very end. Nintendo has REALLY turned around in the advertising department since the Switch launch.

Re: Video: The State Of Nintendo Switch Two Years After Its Release

Highlar

@TommyTendo You have no idea how badly both my daughters want a Tomodachi Life 2 for their Switches. lol They've both mentioned it multiple times now.

As for what I think of the Switch now, two years in? Absolutely love it. Tax time this year has become "Switch game purchase and backlog adding" time. I play my Switch just about every day, whether for a little or a lot...sometimes as little as a few minutes to several hours...and its all thanks to its hybrid nature. I play my Switch much much more than my PS4 now. I have over 100 games in just 2 years...mostly digital but 20 or so physical, as well. The Switch is the first console to really make me appreciate a portable digital AAA library. Monster Hunter and Skyrim go with me everywhere...and I love it. Recently bought a 400gb card, and after redownloading everything I've had to juggle before on my 128gb card...I only have about 120gb left to fill up...and already have ideas on how to do it (FFX/X-2, FFXII, Dragon's Dogma, and Warmastered Edition are some leading candidates to help fill it up)...so I'll probably need to start switching SD cards out soon...which surprises me no end. Do I think there could be some upgrades to the system? Sure...: folders and themes are my biggest wants for the UI...maybe the eShop upgraded to be more like the Wii U eShop (which I loved the setup there)...but overall I love my system. As far as system/hardware upgrades...I fall into the "Switch Pro" camp...and I'd buy one instantly...which I've never been one to do (upgrading hardware). I still have a base unit PS4, and have never really felt any kind of a need to jump to a PS4 Pro...but a Switch Pro I'd buy in a heartbeat. My absolute favorite system of all time now.

Re: Anniversary: Nintendo Switch Launched Two Years Ago Today

Highlar

I remember the excitement I felt watching that initial reveal trailer online for the first time. All I could think of was "No way...that can't be what it really is...how it really works!", because it was like a dream console idea for someone who had been a gamer for decades. Wasn't able to get a pre-order for the system in, and when I went in launch week to pick one up...they were gone everywhere. I was, however, able to grab a "pre-order" for one of the bundles that my local Gamestop was setting up for their next shipment of Switch units. It came with Zelda (which I had already picked up for my Wii U as well) and Just Dance. Since it came in the Switch has been my favorite console ever. The variety of game selection is astounding, considering its just been only 2 years. From big, breathtaking AAA games like BotW and Mario, Doom and Diablo...to small indie gems like Oxenfree and Rocket League or Snake Pass and so many others...the game library of the Switch just keeps getting better and better. The system itself fits perfectly into my adult gaming lifestyle now. It goes with me to work every day, whether I play it on my lunch break or not...its there with me in case I do want to. I play on the TV through the dock just as much as I do in handheld. I've had to buy 2 other systems for my daughters, and we all play together and separately on such a variety of games. This new year just looks to expand on our ever growing collection of games over all 3 systems.

Here's to Nintendo and Switch...here's to a wonderful last 2 years of gaming excitement at home AND on the go...and here's to many more years to come with this amazing little hybrid console!

Re: Video: Fan Creates Touching Speed Drawing In Tribute Of Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aimé

Highlar

I still get a bit sad every time I think about Reggie retiring and not being in any more Nintendo Directs, stage setups, etc. He truly was (and I think always WILL be) an icon of and for Nintendo. His playful attitude and also seriousness about Nintendo and how the company thinks of its gaming consumers was something that never fails to touch the emotions. To me, his ready smile and willingness to do the silly, happy, funny things for Nintendo embodied, in a way, what the company as a whole has always stood for: fun. Reggie is a part of the reason I've been a lifelong Nintendo fan. I started with Nintendo before Reggie...and I'll continue with them now that he is gone (also love the PS4, but Nintendo systems always come first with me)...but at least for a while the company just won't be the same after he's officially gone.

Re: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy Switch eShop Listing Reveals April Release

Highlar

Its about darn time!!! Both my daughter and I have been waiting on word of this coming to the west for months. I'm going to have to get 2 copies of it too...one for each of us...as we are both huge Ace Attorney fans. I've especially played the first one I don't know how many times...and it just never seems to get old for me. Revisiting it again every few months...even after having done it before...still feels great. I know my daughter is going to be one HAPPY person tomorrow (she's a massive Pokemon AND Ace Attorney fan...so its a two-fer for her tomorrow with news...lol).

Re: 1TB Micro SD Cards Are About To Hit Stores, Perfect For Your Switch Storage Woes

Highlar

I used to be in the "physical disk/cartridge!" camp...but with my old Vita I started the move...and with Switch I've moved mostly over into digital for most of my purchases. Its just so nice having MHGU/Skyrim/Warframe etc all with me at all times whenever I want to play them. I started with a 128g card...moved up to a 256...now need to move up to a 400 card as I'm already having to shuffle games in and out. Maybe I'll pick up 2 of the 400g cards for now, and switch between them. My digital vs physical collection of Switch games isn't even comparable.

Also, Nintendo seems to have really amped up the eShop sales section in the last few months, with a ton of good games going on some pretty good sales every week. I've been able to stock up a rather large set of backlog games thanks to it. Or should I say no thanks to the sales? lol

Re: Warhammer Age Of Sigmar: Champions Will Soon Conquer Nintendo Switch, Cross-Play Included

Highlar

Personally I'm quite happy to see these digital CCG's coming to Switch. I love digital card games...always have...back from when Magic first went online all the way till now... Lightseekers is very interesting, but I want that "on tv" patch to come out before I can really get into it, I think...some of the text just seems too small for me on the portable screen. However the mechanics of Lightseekers are quite interesting and new for a CCG, as far as I know. Can't wait to see what this one is like!

Re: Rumour: Multiple Online Listings Suggest Assassin’s Creed III Is Coming To Switch

Highlar

The only AC I personally want on Switch is Black Flag. I have no idea how many countless hours I spent sailing the high seas in that game...not fast traveling...just sailing...listening to sea chanties...fighting through storms...plundering enemy frigates... My favorite AC game BY FAR. Three for me was kind of...meh...and I had to struggle my way through it to the end. Although I would still buy this package if it came out, if only to play through Liberation (I had just gotten that for my Vita shortly before it got obliterated by water). So at least that part of the game would be new...oh...and the mad General Washington stuff; I never got the DLC on Wii U.

Re: Fortnite Update On Switch Sacrifices Video Capture Feature To Enhance Performance

Highlar

My daughters and I play Fornite rather regularly. I'd say every other night or so, we pull out our Switch's together and play 3 or 4 rounds together before they get ready for bed. I can't say that we've noticed any real problems with how the game plays, other than maybe a bit of the buildings not coming in right away, but that's been pretty infrequent. For us, the games have run mostly smoothly, and we quite enjoy playing squads together. Although I have used the video capture feature a few times, its not something I use frequently on a personal level (more so now that MHGU is out, but still not nearly as much as the picture capture). And while its sad for those that use the feature frequently, I think this won't affect the majority of Switch Fortnite players, other than to improve their game performance. Making the feature an option for those that want it in the future I think is a good idea.

Re: Review: Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate (Switch)

Highlar

@Spookypatrol This is why I prefer the older MH games to World. Yes...World is a pretty great game...but I hated how they took out the unique and brightly colorful older MH worlds in favor of that more 'gritty realism' that World is. To me, more blocky graphics and all, MHGU is the prettier and more beautiful look between the two games. I've always LIKED the use of color in the older MH games, which they pretty much stripped out of World.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Praises The Switch Port Of Paladins

Highlar

For those saying that "$30 for a F2P game is a hard sell"...you aren't just "paying for a F2P game". You get every current character unlocked from the get-go...that's 36 character to choose from right away. You will also get immediate free access to EVERY new character that is ever made and put into the game. No need to ever grind for any character openings. You also get skins for characters, and I love the flaming horse mount skin that comes with the Founder's Pack. To my mind, it is well worth the price of admission to play the game now...with all characters...and with all characters that will ever come out. The game plays great...runs smooth...the aim-assist is helpful to those of us who aren't exactly FPS gods and makes me feel like I'm actually pretty decent at the game...and the developers I believe have said that they would like to look into gyro-aiming as well. The game also looks great on either the TV or handheld...and hardly ever seems to drop resolution noticeably for any length of time...and even if it does the action is so quick and frantic that I've never noticed it. I DO agree that the menu situation needs improvement...it can take what seems forever after clicking to get the menus to move on. Other than that, I'm very happy with this purchase!

Re: Shots Are Fired In This New Minecraft Cross-Play Trailer

Highlar

This whole thing with Sony would be fine, in my opinion, except for one thing: they DO allow cross-play...just only with PC (IE: Final Fantasy XIV). Sony seems to have no problem with cross-play when it comes to PC...its only the other consoles it is preventing cross-play with. So, the whole "its for the protection of our users!" comments are bogus because they already DO allow cross-play in some situations. This by Sony is strictly a business move, to concentrate their player base on ONLY their system...but this goes completely against the message they always like to put out at E3 (like they did again this year): that Sony is for THE PLAYERS. Sony is definitely NOT for the players...they are for Sony...plain and simple. I'd respect the company more if they would outright just say that...instead of giving me hollow platitudes. And yes...I own a PS4 and a PS3...and a Switch. Love all the consoles I own...but doesn't mean I have to love the parent companies all as much.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's E3 2018 Went Big On Smash Bros. But Left Us Wanting More

Highlar

I don't know about others, but I was pretty impressed with how much Nintendo packed into their Direct. Do I think they spent TOO much time on Smash, and could have maybe devoted a bit more time to things like Monster Hunter or Dragonball FighterZ? Sure. But I went back and rewatched the Direct...and wrote down all of the game info that was shown. The list, to me, is actually pretty impressive.

Total games shown: 35

New games shown, and coming in 2018: 13 (I include things like Fallout Shelter and Fortnite, because they ARE new even if we know about them now)

New games but not coming till 2019: 3 (I included Fire Emblem here because it was the first we've seen of it besides "Its coming")

Old games already known about, but coming 2018: 19

So...for a Direct that they SAID would be focused on both Smash and games coming out in the near future, that makes 32 (THIRTY-TWO) games that were shown that are either here already or coming before the end of the year. I don't see how that could be called a "fail" at all. That's a LOT of content. That's almost 7 games a month from now till the end of 2018. To me, that sounds anything BUT a failure. Do I think Nintendo goofed some by spending too much time on Smash, like Sony did with their strangely worked presser? I do. However, if you are looking at the GAMES that were shown, this isn't a failure. Maybe they won't all appeal to everyone, but its a strong list of games from multiple genres...all coming to Switch...and most of them this year. That works for me!

Re: Sony Blocks PS4 Fortnite Players From Using Their Account On Nintendo Switch

Highlar

Sony has no problem with cross-play...if its between PS4/PC. Any console-console cross-play for Sony and its "but oh no...for da kiddies!" and they lock it off. Everyone knows exactly how simple it would be to enable it, but Sony has to control their userbase and lock them into their service alone. I think in the end its only going to cost them some extra customers.

Re: Here's What You Get Inside Starlink's Star Fox Starter Pack For Nintendo Switch

Highlar

I've been interested in picking this up since LAST E3, when they announced it and said that you could just buy the parts digitally, not HAVING to get them physical. But this...this just sealed the deal absolutely. And by seeing the reactions around YouTube to the Star Fox reveal...Ubisoft did a VERY smart business thing with this. Switch will easily become THE definitive version of Starlink, and I'm betting will sell TONS more than both the Xbox and PS4 versions.

Re: Video: Check Out FIFA 19 Running On Switch In Handheld Mode

Highlar

I haven't broken down and gotten Fifa 18 yet...even with all the half off sales...but I've seriously been considering it. Would it still be worth it to get the last one for now, or does this look to be such an improvement that I should just wait till September and get this version?

Re: Star Fox Swoops Into Starlink: Battle For Atlas, Arrives On 16th October

Highlar

From the Ubisoft info posted over on GoNintendo:

The open-world, customizable combat action of Starlink: Battle for Atlas blasts off for the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PS4 on October 16, and the Nintendo Switch version comes with some famous cargo. Nintendo's Fox McCloud of Star Fox fame, complete with his Arwing, will join The Starlink Initiative as a playable character for the entirety of the game's open-world campaign, including missions exclusive to Fox as add on content.

So...it looks like Fox will play a major part in the game...being there from beginning to end. So...yes...this could end up being a great StarFox game! Also...I like how it expands the StarFox world...in that Corneria and surrounding territories are just a smaller part of a more vast universe.

Re: Bethesda's Fallout Shelter Arrives On The Nintendo Switch Today

Highlar

Hmm...so reading the description when I went and started downloading this from the eShop...its something akin to Oxygen Not Included? A base building/management style game, where you have to build and keep your dwellers happy while expanding your base? If so...I could be in trouble...because I can become hopelessly addicted to these kind of time-wasters. lol

Re: Bethesda Brings The Elder Scrolls: Legends To Switch

Highlar

Personally, I love digital collectible card games. I've been hoping that Hearthstone would make the jump...but since it hasn't, I'll give Legends a try. Also, its pretty cool that I can download the PC version and get started now...and then continue my account on Switch when it drops. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me!

Re: Video: The Unsung Heroes of the Nintendo Switch eShop

Highlar

I own West of Loathing (one of my favorites), IronCast, and Oxenfree (although I've barely played it still...need to get into that one). I still want to get Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime and Crypt of the Necrodancer. Floor Kids I think sounds interesting, but something about it has never really grabbed me and made me want to buy. Yoku's Island Express looks interesting too, so maybe I'll get that one sometime.

Re: Video: Watch A Replay Of SNK’s Neo Geo Mini Online Presentation Right Here

Highlar

This...just isn't for me. There's just WAAAAY to many fighting games. About the only ones I'd want from there that I think aren't on Switch (yet) would be Magician Lord and Crossed Swords. I spent way WAY too many quarters on those back in the day. Especially Crossed Swords. But...it seems like over half of the games are fighting games, and yearly iterations of each so there's not much difference between them? Just makes the "variety" seem much too similar to me. Guess I'll pass on this one.

Re: Review: The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker (Switch eShop)

Highlar

This saddens me a little. I've been interested in this one for a while, due to the "inputting your own questions for response" thing, but it sounds like overall the answers you get just don't link well together in a cohesive "Clue" style game (which this basically reminds me of, but with FMV). I'll have to think much harder about getting this now than I was before.

Re: Hands On: Breaking Racquets and Hearts in Mario Tennis Aces

Highlar

Hmm...I was really hoping for some commentary on how it felt using both button and motion controls. Sounds like the game is shaping up VERY nicely, but my favorite Wii Sports game by far was Tennis...and I've been hoping the motion controls for this are as good as that was...but I've not really heard much on that point yet.

Re: Salty Shores Update Is Coming To Rocket League Next Week

Highlar

@magnumc500 Umm...hasn't cross-play with PC/Xbox been in the game since the beginning? The only system that isn't allowing cross-play on this game (or others like Minecraft, etc.) is the PS4. Sony keeps blocking cross-play with other systems, but Nintendo and Microsoft have seemed to be VERY open about it. Also, the tourney update with cross-play tournaments already came out too, if I remember right. The only thing that there isn't, yet (I think), is the cross-platform friends lists/groups.

Re: A Cheaper, Customisable 'Nintendo Switch 2nd Set' Has Launched In Japan Without A Dock

Highlar

I have to agree with and echo the concerns of those above about the pricing of this set. They've already said the dock itself...alone...sells for $90 here in the US. And the AC adapter is $25-$30 or somewhere in that range. HDMI cables are fairly cheap nowadays. The price on this "2nd Switch Set" wouldn't be considered so bad...except we already know how much the things they are leaving out cost...and it makes the discount look minuscule. Dropping the price to $200 for the set would have been much better, and still not covered the difference in the extra items, so Nintendo would still be making extra money. The pricing on this just makes the company look greedy, which I've never quite pictured Nintendo (of all the gaming companies out there) as being.

Re: Review: Little Nightmares: Complete Edition (Switch eShop)

Highlar

@Equinox Hmm...kind of hard to say. The cast of the boat's "crew" and "passengers" are...very disturbing. Like the "twin chefs" look like they are actually wearing someone else's skin as faces, pulled over their own heads as masks. The devil is in the details, so they say. I wouldn't say its too badly "scarring", though it could possibly give someone nightmares. lol... And if you play through the whole story and all DLC...the way it loops everything back together is a bit of an "ah hah!" moment...but then comes the stomach turning that makes it even MORE creepy/disturbing, as you put it all together.

Re: Review: Fairune Collection (Switch eShop)

Highlar

I had always wanted to try this when I had my 3DS, but I never quite pulled the trigger on them. Got this ordered on pre-purchase as soon as it hit the eShop. Played the first game and beat it last night in about 3 hours...going to go for those 2 and 1 hour achievements eventually, too. As to the game play, I've always loved Ys 1&2...the combo game (especially the Tubrografx CD version)...is still, to this day, one of my favorite games of all time. And these games remind me so much of Ys that I'm just having a blast with it. Delved a bit into 2 today after work, and it seems like a MUCH expanded version over 1...a very good sequel so far. Looking forward to seeing how long 2 takes me...and jumping into Blast for a bit of shooter fun. Well worth the asking price so far, in my opinion!
