Marvelous Inc. has announced that Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin has now surpassed one million sales worldwide, absolutely smashing the game's initial target.
The publisher has shared a statement from the game's developer Edelweiss, which thanks players who've picked up and enjoyed the game. Surprisingly, Edelweiss reveals that its initial sales target for the title was just 30,000 copies, so we imagine one million sales has come as a very welcome surprise indeed.
It was revealed that the game passed the 950,000 sales mark back in May, when Marvelous released its latest financial results. Hitting that one million sales milestone will be an extra special achievement though, of course.
Have you played Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin? Let us know if you enjoyed it in the comments below, or if you're yet to check it out, feel free to read our full review to learn all about it.
Thanks to Greatsong for the tip!

I need to play this I guess.
@GamerGrandpa if you like to play physical get it before the price goes up scalpers are being total d**ks.
That’s awesome. I recently bought it for Switch but not had time to play it yet. Hopefully Switch sales accounted for enough that we get the sequel on the platform.
@tonyp1987
I picked up an EU copy from Amazon for £34.99 a while back, and it's available for £31.77 right now.
It's available at the likes of 365games.co.uk and Game.co.uk too.
Is it hard to find in the US or something?
So does that only apply to just the physical version or digital as well? Cause though I bought it physically my brother only bought it digitally. If it's just physical then the sales numbers would be even higher.
One of my favorite Switch games last year. I'm so glad people caught onto this one as barely got the promotion it deserved (was on a Japanese partner direct, but not here).
@Ghost_of_Hasashi This is how MS Edge translated the press release (in Japanese) from their website:
"The original target was 30,000 bottles. That's a great number. If you go to the event and distribute one by one, there are 2,160 bottles every 10 seconds, so 1,000,000 ... ? I don't know why."
...did that answer your question? XD
(I think I saw on Twitter that it was for both physical and digital.)
Of course it did! It’s soooo goood! Seriously my GOTY last year. I'm still unlocking armor/weapons, lol!
Sequel please and thank you!
@PapaPedro If that numbers is for both then that's less impressive cause the physical version may had only sold 70% of that. If the numbers are for just physical only then that's very impressive cause digital sales was not counted meaning if those were counted then the sales numbers would had been higher.
@RupeeClock Both the standard and collector's editions are still readily available on Amazon US. This is one game that I thought would skyrocket in price due to the unexpected popularity, but I haven't seen any stock issues.
@RupeeClock Not at all. I've seen it at every store I've been to recently, and it's available on Amazon for $37.
Not sure how long that's going to last, but currently it's very easy to find.
Got the divine edition recently for a fair price, couldn't be happier. Muramasa is one of my favorite Wii games, and I don't mind farming simulators either
It looks so stunning, so beautiful, great fun... But farming simulation isn't my kind of thing, so I didn't get it. But it does always catch my eye.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi @PapaPedro It's for both physical and digital combined. One million in total. 🙂
@Ghost_of_Hasashi I think it includes both. I read the article and it just said it surpassed one million.
That’s still great for a small budget title like this. And it will probably continue to sell.
I'd have probably picked it up if it didn't feature the farming element, but I'm happy it did well. Clearly there was a lot of passion and creativity invested in this title.
Such a great game, real unique twist on the usual farming life sim. I really need to finish it!
I remember this being only included in the Japanese partner showcase while the American showcase had the 2k wrestling game instead, glad they were still able to get noticed
@PapaPedro that’s a lot of bottles
Impressive number.
Its the $55 on Amazon Canada. I have been waiting for any sort of sale for it and have not seen one.
Congrats to Sukuna for joining the 1 million seller Switch title list.
Glad to see that the devs' expectations were surpassed ten-fold. Can't wait to see what they have in store next
Man... They low balled that figure. The game is great and deserves all the attention it received.
I still have no idea what the game is or anything about it, but I guess I better look into it
Okami released in 2006 and only reached 1 mil sales in 2019. Sakuna reached that milestone in 7 months. When put together, I don't know whether to be happy or sad about those facts...
If you are considering playing this game, DO IT! I LOVED this game and with the farming and everything I thought, nah def not my type of game. I originally purchased it because of the solid reviews and the rarity of it. I fell in love instantly and the farming is actually pretty straight forward. Seriously, do yourself a favor and pick it up. I thought Xseed had copies available on their website.
@GamerGrandpa I need to play this I guess.
Your not the only one here that needs to do that.
I keep hearing so many good things about this game. I should probably get it at some point!
@Ryu_Niiyama I second that comment. Sakuna was my Switch GOTY. If FF7R didn’t hit me square in the feels, it would’ve been undisputed GOTY for me.
It’s so good that I bought it for several people at Christmas and even got a second copy from someone in my family and requested, as my gift, to give it to someone that would play it. Love the game.
What an adorable game is full of charm and gameplay. I love seeing games like this do well.
and it was originally meant to be exclusive to Playstation 4 yet it ends up selling best on Switch
Excellent game. The theme of comparing poor farm life and modern privilege can be eye opening.
I couldn't be happier for Edelweiss! Personally, I think it would be interesting if they explored 3D combat for the sequel.
I have heard mentioned they are considering a follow-up in lieu of these incredible sales numbers, even though initially Edelweiss said in a launch interview they definitely weren't planning to make one!
@somnambulance It really does have a unique atmosphere. Like what indie games used to feel like before they were churned out by the truckload. I’m thinking fresh like Cave Story back in 2004. Made with love... I guess that’s what gives it its special feel.
Hard to describe...
@BlubberWhale Agree 100%. There’s certain indies that just have that special quality to them and it’s indescribable, and there’s a couple of them released year after year, but so many indies pour out now that when one actually clicks like Sakuna, it clicks good. Sakuna was so addictive to me and yet I savored it too. I let the game drag out, which is definitely not something I do often anymore. Love any game that winds back the clock of my play style 20 years. Lol.
I haven't played Sakuna, but I have played Edelweiss' other game, Astebreed. It's super impressive what this small team can do
This was a unique game and I really liked Sakuna as a character, but sold my copy when the farming gameplay loop became tedious.
@somnambulance Right, that’s a good way to put it. I too let it drag, but to be honest, I wasn’t able to commit to gaming much at the time (still play rather infrequently), and didn’t actually get very far into the game. I was really savoring the first part like you said. I sorta forgot, but you mentioning it reminded me... Really need to go back to it. 😁 (Actually Pikmin 3 Deluxe almost clicked in a similar way for me, and I haven’t played much at all of that one... I love my backlog!!) 😄
Heard great things about this game. I'm glad to see that it's selling well. I purchased the Divine Edition for PS4 but I haven't played it yet. Mabey I'll pick up a copy for Switch soon and play it in handheld mode instead.
@BlubberWhale I left Pikmin 3 sit for months, but finally completed it in January. I cannot recommend that game enough. I loved the co-op too. I played the whole thing with my fiancée and we both had a blast. Sakuna and Pikmin both have a special feel where there’s nothing quite like either of them.
Nintendo Life Review: Con - You do really have to care about rice to enjoy it.
Well apparently a lot of switch owners really care about rice then.
Either way it looks like another game to put on the top of my backlog.
@somnambulance Yeah, I played a couple hours of Pikmin co-op, and I know what you mean. But yeah, it’s great that some games can still affect me like that. (And I don’t always have to rely on nostalgia.)
I've tried so hard to like this game - I typically love farm sim RPG types of games, and I liked the Demon Blade on Wii (which has a similar aesthetic and combat) - and I just haven't been able to.
It's one of only two Switch games that I regret purchasing. But, I'm glad that it's found a market.
Congrats to the development team! This has been on my wishlist for a while so I'll play it eventually for sure.
