Controversial YouTuber Logan Paul stepped into the ring with actual boxer Floyd Mayweather last night, but you'd be forgiven for not noticing, as the bout itself was a proper snooze-fest – there wasn't even a winner! Yawn.
The glorified publicity stunt achieved its goal, though – both participants came out of the eight-round fight considerably richer, with the BBC reporting that 44-year-old, five-time world champion Mayweather will pocket around $50m. No wonder he has referred to the fight as "legalised bank robbery". However, Paul himself could end up being the true victor, and not just for the cash he will pocket for taking part in what his opponent called "a fun night".
Paul – who has over 23 million subscribers on YouTube and came under fire in 2017 for filming and uploading footage of a suicide victim during a trip to Japan – made a point of wearing a Pokémon card around his neck when he entered the ring, and later commented during the post-match press conference that the card's value will have risen to one million dollars purely because of its association with the bout.
The card in question is a mint, first-edition 10-graded Charizard, which is believed to be the same one he purchased from collector Gary Haase for a cool $150,000 (thanks, Kotaku). At the time he made that eye-watering purchase, Paul said:
Pokémon is blowing up. I have no doubt in my mind that this card will be worth a million dollars between two and three years from now. They’re called appreciating assets. I’m done buying Lamborghinis. I’m done buying stuff that won’t make me money.
Pokémon cards are certainly in high demand right now, with 3.7 billion cards being sold in 2020 alone. We've already had scalpers buying up McDonald's Happy Meals to secure special cards, while some US stores are seeing their shelves emptied as soon as they are restocked.
Paul himself has been fuelling this fire by opening boxes of cards on his channel. Several of his highest-ranking videos state that he has spent thousands of dollars on rare cards or boxes of cards, and he's opened many of them live on YouTube. However, by wearing the Charizard card to the ring, Paul has outdone himself when it comes to inflating the value of these cards.
When asked about why he wore the card following the fight, he replied:
It’s a BGS 10 Charizard, first edition Charizard. It’s one of three in the world. It is my prized possession. Ever since I got this graded at a ten, the momentum in my life has been crazy. It’s my good luck charm. I mean now, s**t, this is a million-dollar card, baby. This is the card I walked out [with] to the Floyd Mayweather fight. This is a million-dollar card.
Still, the rise in value of cards has had some positive effects – it gave one kid the idea of selling his beloved collection in order to pay for medical care for his dog, but thankfully it didn't come to that as a GoFundMe page was set up and $5,420 raised.

The guy is a clown. Got no time for him
Legalized sports fighting is not only unethical, it is wasteful of a fighters skills. This is a new low for boxing, I didn’t think it could get any lower but humanity is cool like that amirite??
I would hope that the value of the card went down instead; not sure I would want something associated with him.
He's seriously ruined my name, people used to say "Logan...like Wolverine from the X-Men?"
-now they just say "oh, like the suicide forest dude?"
...I want my name back
It makes me worry for every one of the 23 million people that follow this clown. I still remember his so-called apology video years back and it clearly hasn't clown him down.
I really don't want to live in a world where cardboard cartoon trading cards are referred to as "appreciating assets" and are traded as commodities by investment bankers.
Absolutely cannot stand this dude. Dictionary definition of a D-bag.
only in his head.
More like lost value.
As if I'd give a rat's ass about him or his card. I don't care how popular his card(s) are, I wouldn't want anything that's associated with him.
@Kimyonaakuma Logan is a cool name, and that's coming from an X-Men fan. Don't let this loser or anyone else ruin it for you, take pride in your name bud!
Idiot.
Yeah...that's all I can think of.
@Kimyonaakuma I guess it depends who you talk too because I've never heard of this guy or the suicide forest you speak of. It's still very much "like Wolverine" here. Or very occasionally "like the berry".
What kind of person carries around a million dollar item as a good luck charm?
I don't care about him, he's not the type of content I consume, but he's an entertainer and that's what entertainers do, they seek attention, that's their job.
I thought this was creative and hilarious. I loved it and I'm close to the opposite of a fan of his.
The guys a joke and so is his perceived value of the card.
Mayweather should have layed him out. The only reason he didn't completely destroy him was probably a contract forbidding it. Which makes it a fixed fight. If it were real Logan would have been in a coma probably.
we should be blaming paul logan and others on youtube for causing the fistfights over pokemon cards over selling rare cards which the packs are hard to find now cause of these idiots hoarding them all to themselves not allowing kids or even collectors from getting them.
Before I read the comments, I can only take a guess on what direction they're leaning towards...that Logan Paul and his ilk are the scourge of the earth, 😂
Not that I disagree. Just saying we can be a bit predictable here at NLife 😄
the fact he brought it to the "fight" should decrease its value if anything
Farcical in every regard.
All I know is I wish my body was like Logan pauls then I could be a confident person in the real world. It can’t be easy to get that body, and he is making loads of money doing what he is doing . Yes I’m jealous x
He sounds like Seto Kaiba
@Stocksy Still you took the time to comment on him
@NEStalgia How do you feel about living in a world with infinite money printing that devalues your savings? Better get to buying those pokemon cards!
I'm disassociated as can be from this whole experience as can be. I don't know the guy beyond the previous controversy, I had no idea there was some boxing match going on, I am clueless why we're all pretending Pokemon cards are a big deal again.
That said, I'm surprised said past controversy didn't do the guy in. This is the same one going up to recently killed bodies in that Japanese suicide forest and making fun of them. Folks of higher media standards get cut off for less egregious stunts.
Mayweather walked in wearing a mask and an OnlyFans hat. Compared to that, a holo Charizard is extremely based.
@Kimyonaakuma It's probably a generational thing. I mean, I'm aware of who he is. But when I hear the name Logan, Wolverine still and will always probably come to mind.
@JoyBoy true. Never clicked one of his videos though. I don’t feed the animals it’s dangerous
Wait, THIS was the guy who filmed that suicide victim?
Dislike intensifies
I'd think the same thing if I'd just had my skull smashed in.
@MrMichaelJames Wishing pain upon someone you don't like. Very classy.
@weoputjlsldfkj I would state my thoughts on that, but then I would be banned for violating at least 70% of the acceptable use terms of the site, so I'll only summarize by saying: "$#$@#!#!#$$!$!#$ $#@$@#$$@ $#@$#$@#$ $#@$@#"
Never heard of the guy till now. Still don't care now that I have.
If that were a real fight, Mayweather would have laid Logan Paul out flat in about 15 seconds.
I'll never forget that Suicide Forest stunt he pulled. He should have been cancelled for that and it is beyond me how he is still around.
So are we gatekeeping Pokémon cards now? Don't have to like the guy but cmon, it super fun that he did this
Lol "controversial" youtuber and "actual" boxer. Mayweather has been charged for domestic violence on several occasions. I'm pretty sure he's controversial as well.
@BloodNinja it's ethical if both parties understand the risks and are getting compensated fairly (it is not different from any other contact sport). As someone who has boxed it is a great workout and there is a comradery you develop with your opponent. This while a gong show has given boxing some buzz which it has needed for a solid decade.
@Wexter While I agree with two consenting fighters doing it, I specifically mentioned legalized sports fighting. Meaning, where money is exchanged so people can watch the fight. That sort of thing has been so normalized that people don’t bat an eye, but I don’t believe in entertaining people at the expense of another persons health. The match is between the fighters, on-lookers are not important to the outcome of their training. Yes, boxing is a great workout, I’ve trained martial arts for 20 years, and I taught it the past 15 years and it keeps me young. I just draw the line at pointless competition matches for entertainment.
Why is this tool given so much attention? He and Floyd Mayweather just put a dagger into any lingering relevance remaining in boxing with their little WWE like bout yesterday.
@UmbreonsPapa I think most current pop culture is complete garbage, so you would be correct in your assessment, at least on my end.
@iuli LMFAO Yes, I train a style called Chang Moo Kwon (Way of Seeking Virtue.) it’s an old Kung Fu/Karate/Kenpo style that has a lot of mixture from China, Japan, and Korea. I learned more of the Korean side, it’s fascinating to train! The Korean presidential bodyguard team uses that style, so it’s been very helpful in my life, if you get my drift!
HOW IS IT HIS GOOD LUCK CHARM IF HE DIDN'T WIN?!
also, i bet he's gonna sell it and it's gonna be worth like $15
Stop giving air time to "YouTubers", especially pillocks like this one.
@Kimyonaakuma my name is Schuyler but back in the day when I was in junior high school I was always teased because I had really long hair. I'm Native American and even my native friends teased me! Well probably because I'm a halfbreed and not full blood Native, but regardless I friggin' HATED HANSON!
Yeah those three Tulsa brothers with the long hair and that "Mmmbop" song. They used to called me, "Hey Mmmbop!"
Ugh... At least Hanson didn't stick around forever and were quickly forgotten once all the boy bands took over a year or so later.
@Jackpaza0508 naw it'll still be worth a mint because it is a perfect 10 card. Now as for the actual value of it? Maybe if he got him and Floyd to sign the plastic shell case and it was dubbed "The Pokémon fight card" or something lol
@iuli I'm not sure I'd call anyone uneducated because they willingly spent their money how they wanted. I also wouldn't imply anyone was scammed. I think everyone knew what the deal was here.
I also believe we are talking about adults here. Unless you're implying teens and younger were the ones paying for this fight. If that's the case, the problem doesn't lie with Logan Paul or Floyd Mayweather.
@iuli I’ve bodyguarded those that needed it, but my main jam is teaching people to be stronger and more confident in themselves through training martial arts. It’s nice to have the confidence to defend oneself, even better when we have a day where we don’t have to use it like that!
YouTube influencers... like these so-called "Switch" experts like Dreamcastguy, Wood Hawker, RGT 85, ReviewtechUSA and others who have zero journalist credentials and no connections at all to Nintendo, but do a great job at rumor mongering and regurgitating news from Google.
Me as a 10 year old: I want to get those trading cards cos its fun to collect and trade them.
10 year olds today: this trading card will likely increase in value in years to come. Better invest.
God Logan Paul is a bellend.
Nothing Jake Paul wears is worth 1 million dollars
Wouldn't the card lose value if he wore it?
I don't know why you guys are so upset about this. I had fun watching the fight, even if it didn't have much substance. Nobody was forcing anyone to watch it and you certainly weren't forced to pay for it.
@nessisonett I'm from the U.S., so I had to Google this. Needless to say, I had a good laugh. 🤣
don't give him press
Sure, it's worth a million dollars if someone is willing to pay for it. I would say that it isn't likely that someone will pay that price for it, but then NFTs were a thing for a while. As Hungry Joe probably once said, "There's a sucker born every minute," and this dude is just hoping to cross paths with them.
@B_Lindz I do sometimes forget these words aren’t used across the pond 😂
@Kimyonaakuma
Don't worry, most People will still think more on Wolverine than any other Person.
I have no Idea who the Person in the Article is.
Turned on the Search Engines and still: Nope, no Idea.
The "Fame" of D-Promis from the US don't get over the Border.
He should take it on his next stroll through a suicide forest; maybe it'll help him find another dead body to exploit.
I'm genuinely surprised this mf clown is still relevant after pulling that stunt and generally being an ass to everybody during his trip to Japan, yet creators with less of a following end up getting cancelled for less legitimate reasons.
@weoputjlsldfkj And that's your choice. I personally don't understand the attraction of these talentless "influencers" and the pull they have on our current pop culture. Also, boxing has been hanging on a lifeline in comparison to other combat sports like UFC and the reliance on the sport to do these "exhibition" bouts and beg old stars like Mayweather, Mike Tyson and Oscar De La Hoya to come out of retirement is not a good look for the sport. It's struggling and while yesterday might be a good payday for the sport, the long term outlook is still cloudy at best.
@kingbk Yes it was my choice to only pay attention to the fight because I thought it was a fun idea. Most of the time, I think sports are boring and pointless, but I don't let it get me down that Lebron James makes millions of dollars.
It's refreshing to see how most people feel the same way about this as I do.
@weoputjlsldfkj I don't care that LeBron James makes millions or athletes make millions. I get it it's a big business. I watch sports.
While LeBron is not my favorite person, I can admit he's a truly gifted basketball player.
@iuli Of course! And yes, it’s strange to say because I train defensive tactics, but I despise fighting and tend towards pacifism. It’s never too late to start learning. I started at age 20, been going ever since. I’ve taught people who started in their 60’s, even a guy who started in his 70’s after a heart surgery and he did great! Even if you learn from videos online to get started, it’s better than nothing! Be safe! It’s always nice to meet nice people on this site!
This is a terrible person and I have no respect for him whatsoever.
Even setting aside his narcissistic opinions and delusional thoughts on Pokemon, he is the man who went to Japan and did selfie videos with a suicide victim.
Human trash, that's what Logan Paul is.
This wretch of a human being should be in jail for assaulting a police officer when he was in Japan!
@Heavyarms55 Calling someone human trash makes you a bad person too.
biggest clown on earth
@BloodNinja not sure if I agree. The thing is boxing gives kids an outlet and learn restraint. I relate boxing closer to contact sports like hockey and American football. It's watching someone spend their lives getting to the top of their craft and see how effectively they can execute on it. Also, the same thing happens in the Eastern material arts as well with tournaments. Spectators need to pay to get in.
Also spots like boxing allow those in underprivileged neighborhoods a chance to escape and build a better life. Plus stay out of gang life. If it's bad for me to enjoy someone in a match than I guess I'm a bad person then.
Why the hell would you guys even make an article about this *****? So much for being a respectable news site..
Perhaps the fact that people are lining up to punch him should give him pause for future career plans.
I consider this guy’s existence proof that we live in a computer simulation, and that it’s gotten infected with a virus or something.
Don't give people like him news space on your site please
@Wexter Most gang-bangers I meet box so that they can gain the upper hand, though. It largely depends on the individual. I’m not saying you’re a bad person for watching matches. I’m saying it’s bad that so much money revolves around hurting others. It’s far different from contact sports, with different repercussions for their injuries. Personally, I don’t support sports violence. You’re bringing up other things about getting kids off the streets and such, which is great but what does that have to do with paid, organized and televised violence?
One of my top students also happened to be a boxer who used it to get OUT of gang life. Probably one of my quickest moving students, and with a great personality and heart. That’s different than paying to watch people harm each other on TV, like boxing and MMA is famous for doing. There’s no point in that, at all, other than mindless entertainment for the masses.
@EmmatheBest Relax. This is a video game site
@weoputjlsldfkj If some rich guy starts verbally assaulting someone on live TV, but they were wearing a shirt with Pikmin on it, do you think this site would report on it? I personally think they would, no questions asked.
@weoputjlsldfkj This man took selfies with, and made vlog videos with the corpse of a suicide victim. I guess he thought dead people make for good entertainment. He is irredeemable human trash and it doesn't make me bad to say that. It makes him bad for having done that.
@Nontendo_4DS See, I love stuff like that, because it’s not about the knockout, it’s about great targeting and technique. Stuff like that is amazing and frankly, more respectful to the bodies of the participants!
Cringeworthy, embarrassing and laughable
@OldManHermit I'm just trying to find the definition right now... For research purposes. Are you using something like Merriam-Webster or the OED? =D
I can't stand Logan Paul - I was in Japan at the same time as he was - He's a disgusting human being.
Nintendolife be like, “engagement”.
@Nitwit13 The Cambridge Advanced Learners Dictionary actually
About that boxing "fight".
I noticed this article earlier today.
Later, I was unrelatedly looking up boxing and Floyd Mayweather online. Only by chance I saw on Wikipedia that Floyd Mayweather fought Logan Paul. I googled the fight and there were recent stories about it. I checked the date on Wikipedia and it was only 2 days ago..
When I first saw this article I glossed it very quickly. I thought Logan was just in the audience for a genuine Mayweather fight.
Mayweather sillying his image for easy money. That "fight" was absolutely fraudulent.
Not only do a lot of people strongly dislike him already, you can't argue that he's ruining pokemon collecting. He's the one who's raising the prices to an absurd amount.
If anything, Logan Paul has decreased its worth by simply owning and stating that.
Logan isn't half as bad as his brother Jake. And he also got a Squirtle tattoo. He did better than Connor Mc Gregor vs Mayweather
Never heard of him. From how this article went, I'm glad I hadn't and hope I don't again. We're doomed if this is what attracts 20m followers.
Isabelle: Err... Oh dear. I guess that doesn't really qualify as "news", does it?
The Guardian put it perfectly: "The fight between one of the greatest boxers in history and one of the best YouTube personalities in his family ended in predictable fashion on Sunday night as Floyd Mayweather danced around Logan Paul for eight rounds without inflicting any real damage."
Where’s the Nintendo in this?
Who cares Logan Paul?
I never knew about it & I wish I didn't. Why couldn't he get the living crap beaten out of him at least? Why? At least let get turned into a mangled wreck on life support. Wait they're brothers right?
I'd easily burn that card. No remorse.
@Heavyarms55 No dude, it does make you bad.
Ya got a click from me, but don't be fooled in thinking I read this.
Stop it.
