Re: Romero Games Reportedly Shut Down Following Xbox Layoffs

Fiergala

@Jayenkai I've never been their biggest fan but in those days especially with the 360 Xbox were a great market disruptor for a complacent Sony. In retrospect the PS3 is pretty great but they needed a kick up the pants. Also, a lot of great indie studios and franchises getting their start on the Live Arcade, we'd never have Hades without Bastion, BoI without Super Meat Boy, etc. Of course, as is often the case with US execs a single whiff of success made them completely lose the plot in a way that imo has never happened with N or Sony and they've never been relevant or anything but kind of a blight on gaming since.

Re: Romero Games Reportedly Shut Down Following Xbox Layoffs

@GrailUK "It should be cheap as chips", if you have Game Pass, Xbox's digital products basically are depending on how much and the brand of chips you buy. Which is the problem, that Xbox has trained their, let's be honest, more or less captive audience (and the short-sighted people that bought into GP without realizing how bad for the industry it is) to not value the kinds of games that should be being made. And the kinds that are, like Perfect Dark, are cancelled because it didn't have Harrison Ford's face (not like that helped much at all. It's for a different time but Indiana Jones and immersive sim don't mix in a way they do for Agent 47, JC Denton, or Joanna Dark)

^ Probably just needs to bow out the way other old heads like Warren Spector have. He's deservedly an FPS legend but Romero and his projects outside of cute custom WADs have had that failure stink way too long.

Re: Switch 2 Users Are Reporting Instances Of Their Consoles Overheating

Fiergala

@xenobladexfan Yeah. We should wait and see in this case though, what if anything the Azuma game has anything to do with these problems. I had a Story of Seasons game for the above mentioned bunk 3DS and thought with some of the shoddy coding the game was the reason, but the problem occurred in all use cases and must have been something faulty with the console.

Re: Romero Games Hit With Layoffs Following Microsoft Xbox Cuts

Fiergala

@SurprisedRobinChu It's pretty awful. Yeah "The Initiative" was taking too long to make it but they were close enough, if it wasn't going to be good change the scope and reduce the price rather than releasing "gameplay" trailers to hype people up based on nothing, there are lots of ways to refocus a game without throwing out the baby with the bathwater. That is something I give Nintendo credit for, unless something has gone seriously wrong with their development they usually don't do this kind of fake hype for products that don't exist. Don't care much about the franchise but from a dev perspective, very worried for Fable.

Re: Romero Games Hit With Layoffs Following Microsoft Xbox Cuts

Fiergala

This seems like engagement bait but I'll take it to crap on modern day Microsoft, holy sh*t what are they doing. Japanese corporate apology culture can be pretty annoying but the fact Phil Spencer would be gone by now in a Japanese company is a good thing.

@SpontaneousOutburst With a free engine and some community support why not, it'd be hilarious. "I can't keep going without my bud Superfly... :-_("

@AmplifyMJ Objectively without skin in the game, he's speaking ideologically from a left wing perspective not specifically against Nintendo, and arguing about the inherent morality of corporatism and capitalism doesn't seem like a great idea on a gaming site, not that that's stopped anyone. Just sayin

Re: Every Nintendo Switch Online GameCube Game On Switch 2, Ranked

Fiergala

@nessisonett Well I think you are better than me than lol, not that surprising. I did restrict myself to only one horse unit and flyer because rescuing was busted but it was still difficult enough for me with those restrictions on Hard personally.

EDIT: Oh, well I meant hard permadeath, as in you can't reset literally ever. If your Lord dies game over as in real life. That was my restriction, I got my Felix and another character killed and wanted to restart the chapter but couldn't. Not exactly realistic for people with busy schedules though.

Re: Wait, 'Busted' Member Is The Singer Of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds' Opening?

Fiergala

"Here we go, time to blow, and we go fast like whoah, here we go fast out of control" - these lyrics are up there with some of the Sonic greats, classic slant rhymes and presumably unintentional sexual innuendos XD

@MirrorFate2 I mean I thought so too but it put a dumb smile on my face, what else can you ask for. I'm still not sure I'm actually buying the game so the goofy enjoyment was free.

Re: Every Nintendo Switch Online GameCube Game On Switch 2, Ranked

Fiergala

@nessisonett You may very well be better at FE than me, but does your assessment of the Three Houses difficulty include an ironman permadeath run with no Mila's Turnwheel (AKA no resetting ever for permanent character death)? Imo while I won't difficulty shame people, more people should really try these sorts of runs at least in the easier games.

Re: Every Nintendo Switch Online GameCube Game On Switch 2, Ranked

Fiergala

@batmanbud2 I have heard the gameplay is some of the strongest in the series, legitimately difficult without gimmicks or number inflation. I just honestly don't like the idea of ignoring story in a Fire Emblem game when there are games in the series with actually good writing and characters, like Path of Radiance haha (and Radiant Dawn though the lack of real supports and some of the story contrivances hurt it imo). If it was free like FEH maybe, though I don't play gatcha (which is a shame because it does have some legit new writing for old characters, including underdeveloped ones with potential like Reinhardt).

EDIT: And Echoes actually, I do agree that it is an underrated game in the series. Don't recommend a permadeath run like I did recently though, those Witches are BS...

Re: Digimon Story: Time Stranger Switch 2 Listing Surfaces Online

Fiergala

@Aerona I do play in the hardest/second hardest modes of the series so maybe my expectations are skewed. I think people mostly mean the cyberpunk aspects of summoning demons/Digimon similar to some SMT games, and it seems Survive had a Negotiation system kind of similar to Demon Negotiation. Again speaking as someone who has only looked from the outside-in so far, wouldn't be surprised if there's some cross-pollination there.

Re: Every Nintendo Switch Online GameCube Game On Switch 2, Ranked

Fiergala

@Advantage @22batmanbud2 I mean I didn't play Engage because the story seemed utterly uninspired and the character designs insipid, but in terms of the pandering anime fanservice, can't you not even actually marry characters in that game? It's like a Ring of Friendship or something? Let's not pretend sexualized character designs are some new thing, see Hilda in FE4, Sonia in Fe7, for just two of many examples. But yeah, the kind of blatant, immersion-breaking stuff I assume you guys mean seems mostly exclusive to Awakening and Fates to me. Dating your own students in Three Houses yeah okay, but none of their designs are sexualized except the gold digger character whose name I forgot, also the details are spoilers but by the time you actually start a real relationship the teacher/student dynamic has changed.

Re: Every Nintendo Switch Online GameCube Game On Switch 2, Ranked

Fiergala

@WiiHawk Path of Radiance has one of my favorite stories and low fantasy tones along with the Jugdral games but its balancing is so off, Hard is way too easy (honestly easier than Sacred Stones Hard without grinding imo) but the Japanese Maniac mode is just tedious and unenjoyable. Radiant Dawn is great though and it's kind of interesting than NoA actually made some good changes compared to their usual unecessary tinkering in the games' like making Nolan his full Brolan self and at least trying to actually balance the rest of the Dawn Brigade (still failed outside Japanese Hard/NA Normal but at least they tried).

Re: Digimon Story: Time Stranger Switch 2 Listing Surfaces Online

Fiergala

The character and monster designs/animations for this series have been really on point, but gameplay-wise at least on the Steam store people mostly say it's a dumbed-down SMT/Persona which I'm not really interested in (being the only Mons series I'm really interested in specifically because it's so arcane, also the real-world mythology). Might get this one just on principle though, it seems like this series has been quietly but assuredly out-performing Pokemon quality-wise for a little while now.

Re: Donkey Kong Bananza Gets An Eight-Minute Overview Trailer

Fiergala

Definitely the first trailer to make me think this game looks great and worth the money, especially for kids. It looks really frenetic, charming, and Pauline singing pop punky stuff to get DK hyped up is a really cute idea. In general the music is sounding very enjoyable.

Re: "One Of The Slowest Modern LCDs I've Ever Seen" - Digital Foundry's John Linneman On Switch 2's Display

Fiergala

@Jeronan I wanted to PM you but seems that's not a feature. Seems like you really know your stuff with HDR and OLED, as someone learning about it and considering getting an OLED screen at some point (having unfortunately bought an "HDR" monitor previously that seems to output only around 500 nits). Someone in a previous article posted this as a problem with VRR? https://www.rtings.com/monitor/learn/research/vrr-flicker As someone who barely even knows what VRR tbh and hasn't used it, does this happen at all outside of VRR? To keep this relevant to Nintendo, future games with better graphics than Cyberpunk (I still think it looks amazing but objectively it did come out in 2020) will maybe have to use VRR?

EDIT: And really even the difference between VRR and DLSS kind of eludes me. But I've actually used DLSS (yeah AI is gross but one out of three frame interpolation is tolerable to me), would this happen with DLSS? If not I'd assume that would be the go-to for a possible future Switch 2 OLED unless these flicker issues with VRR and OLED are fixed.

@The_Nintend_Pedant Man I love your comments, an actually succinct point amidst all this blathering that made me laugh out loud. As for the issue at hand, I'm probably being unconstructive myself at this point so I'll stop, but some of these responses seem equivalent to if I saw Pulp Fiction at a small-town screening with a terrible projectionist and master. I could still enjoy myself a crap-ton (probably overpaying for snacks and beer) while also not denying reality and saying actually the projectionist and person who sourced the master did a great job.

Re: Digital Foundry Is "Happy" With Switch 2 But Feels The Screen Is "Problematic"

Fiergala

@Dee123 Did you watch the video, be honest. Or are you just going to pop up on every video by these guys with the exact same comment. Because that's your right but be aware to anyone that isn't a level 100 fanboy that behavior is incredibly annoying and the exact thing people make fun of Nintendo fans for.

Actually please recommend a tech channel that covers N in "the right way" so NL can cite those people and we don't get all these useless unconstructive comments. I'll email them with the rec since this one random Youtube channel apparently triggers so many people.

Re: The DK Rap Is Back In Donkey Kong Bananza, But Nobody Told Its Composer

Fiergala

@larryisaman People seem to be operating under the assumption we're saying Nintendo CAN'T. Afaik they're still within their rights, it's just a d@ck move.

My question, to those saying Grant didn't "contribute" to the game that's using his theme song verbatim, do the Beatles not contribute to the mood of a scene if a romantic movie uses I Want to Hold Your Hand? Just because John Ringo and the rest weren't there supervising the soundtrack? Why did the director choose to use specifically that song there?

And if it really doesn't matter that much, why doesn't Nintendo remix the song with modern day trap production, or get a Tiktok memelord to make a new song about returning to monke or something? Why are they using the original track with no alterations?

Re: Opinion: I'm Completely In Love With Mario Kart World's Photo Mode

Fiergala

@The_Nintend_Pedant Yeah, it is somewhat confusing terminology now that you mention it haha. Nah, it's just for people who like taking in-game photos with extra effects like camera orientation and filters. One of those things some of us really enjoy, some of us will glance off without a second look.

Yeah, you're right about MGS! GTA4 also had some missions where you had to do some recon taking pictures of a dr_g deal in-game with your cell phone, I thought that was quite cool.

Re: The DK Rap Is Back In Donkey Kong Bananza, But Nobody Told Its Composer

Fiergala

@HammerGalladeBro Yep you're correct, Nobou Uematsu would be a better example. Just checked, he was credited under Special Thanks for FFXV, Original Series Theme for FFXVI. There, is that so hard?

@Ogbert Bro it's the EXACT SAME f'ing theme. Using this dude's work without a single meaningful alteration and expecting him to get a single credit is not the same as expecting the creator of jump physics to be credited in every game with jumping in them. And I do follow specific developers I like, Christian Whitehead developed great ports of early Sonic games for phones, and his studio contributed to the the recent Sonic Origins collection but was open about Sega being mainly behind the project after they shipped and not being happy about it at all. Meanwhile I just checked, https://youtu.be/ODkyyGSazPY, still got his proper credits.

Re: The DK Rap Is Back In Donkey Kong Bananza, But Nobody Told Its Composer

Fiergala

@Ogbert I don't really agree it will hurt people's careers, you were correct earlier that people will still be able to put it on their resumes. And I'm not sticking up for his emotions as an oppressed person or something, I'm not even going there. But in terms of what he's earned through his had work in making the music (which as far as I can tell he composed entirely alone for DK64):

"But fact is he did not work on this game. He did not actively contribute to it. He didn’t know it was even being made until it was revealed to the world. How can he deserve to be credited on something he didn’t know existed?"

How did he not contribute to it if his work is being used in the game and more or less being made DK's new theme song (I know he had some obscure one before this, I'm not a big enough fan of the franchise to know much beyond Island Swing, the ocean theme and hey, DK Rap)? If it was a complete remix that only reused the vocals or something I'd understand but afaik it's use in both this and the Mario movie are his exact original work, maybe with some extra EQ or something. So other than purely corporate, "it isn't his work because he legally doesn't own it anymore" BS, how is he not contributing to a game that is using his original work verbatim, and how does the fact he didn't know about it beforehand matter at all? Does Koichi Sugiyama not deserve credit for using the Japanese-famous Dragon Quest theme that every game uses, because I'm pretty sure that man has been credited in every game that theme appears in. Y'know because it's a sign of respect.

Re: The DK Rap Is Back In Donkey Kong Bananza, But Nobody Told Its Composer

Fiergala

@Ogbert I mean just objectively speaking, "doesn't hurt anyone", it clearly hurt Kirkhope and he's entitled to that unless we want to start having a fun conversation about the emotions men are entitled to or how much they're "allowed" to speak up (already some ageism up above, because he's old and the song is old he's not allowed to still feel attached to it).

@HammerGalladeBro He's clearly being hyperbolic, no it's not the greatest song in history or anything but anyone who's actually made music will tell you making a "so bad it's good song" that people actually remember (which is clearly the case if N is basically making it his new theme song) is not nearly as easy as it sounds. Actual musicians consider Weird Al one of the most talented people in the field despite making mostly parody songs.
