Re: Sonic The Hedgehog Movie Box Office Surpasses $200 Million Worldwide

@Shadowmoon522 I'm focusing more on the current characterization of Sonic rather than the gameplay or the success of the franchise altogether.

SEGA has taken the reception from those games as an indicator that people grew tired of their serious tones when the actual problem was that the plots in those games were just not good.

That is why post-'06 efforts like Sonic Colors have been lighthearted. That may had been fine if they actually put effort into it. For example, Sonic Generations was an alright game in most regards, but the plot was clearly an rushed afterthought and Sonic's personality was reduced to making lame jokes throughout the story.

I'm hoping that the Sonic film doesn't convinve SEGA to reinforce lazy and cringey writing where Sonic is just a stand up comedian that saves the world. He doesn't need to be dramatic or comedic, he just needs to be decently written as a character.

@Heavyarms55 I understand your view. I mainly based my previous reasoning on the fact that the creators of Avatar are accomplished artists who developed its aesthetic.

They made up the character designs and not only based the visual approach on anime, such as the Ghibli films, but also the numerous Asian art styles beyond Japan.

However, their co-operation with various Korean studios for Avatar and Korra was definitely valuable in polishing their vision into something concrete.

I haven't seen it but I feel like that this sort of film shouldn't define the Sonic character in future games kinda like the speculated influence the Resident Evil movies had on R.E. 4, 5, and 6.

Sonic has been obnoxious and overly goofy in the last few games just to remedy the backlash from more serious portrayals like Shadow The Hedgehog and Sonic '06.

@Heavyarms55 The final season had some of the best animation I've seen in the West since The Legend Of Korra (well, the animation was done in a Korean studio but I think it counts as Western).

They also upped the maturity and violence just a tad where it was impactful and not unwelcomed.

Tartakovsky may do some questionable work like Hotel Transylvania but his television projects, Samurai Jack and Primal, have done a great job of demonstrating that Western animation can still be a top notch expression of art.

Re: HAL Laboratory Celebrates 40th Anniversary With New Website And Artwork

Elvie

@RupeeClock I also don't see anything for Day Dreaming Davey.

On a side note, I love the use of Kirby emoticons as the tagline. What better way to celebrate HAL's 40th anniversary than to have Kirby doing a victory dance?

I think we should thank Sakurai on this anniversary. His contributions, along with Iwata's, put HAL on the map.

Re: World Of Goo Is The Next Indie To Get A Physical Release On Switch

@Zequio @yuwarite I guess it's just my preference but I think the precision of touch screen controls actually diminishes the enjoyment to a negligible degree. But thin margins like this can make a world of difference for me in the long term.

I find satisfaction in dragging goo balls manually. It almost gives them a kind of weight.

Plus, regardless of personal preferences, I think it's the "authentic" way to play the game.

@setezerocinco Yeah, I'm implying touch screen and other control methods aren't the best way to play.

Re: Miyamoto Says The Virtual Console Helped Convince Him To Make The New Mario Movie

Elvie

Miyamoto's reasoning for making the Mario film is fine. What isn't fine is the fact that he chose Illumination for the job.

Their output ranges from passable to atrocious. These guys produce films on the lowest budget imaginable on the professional level and they spend more money on marketing than making actual movies.

Their strategy of advertising cute characters for mediocre films works yes, but that just makes this creative cynicism even more depressing.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl #28 - Mario Bros.

Elvie

It was a hard decision between the Japanese and the European box art but I'll go with the PAL release for this one.

The Japanese version, for the most part, represents the characters by faithfully displaying their color scheme.

To note Luigi's colors matches his arcade appearance rather than his N.E.S. one but I'm fine with that.

The European version, however, features a more complete scenario with a clear sewer setting with adequate use of lighting.

Plus, Mario's subtle reaction to Luigi distorting the platform is mildly amusing.

Re: Video: Watch Several Full Scenes From The Sonic The Hedgehog Movie

Elvie

I can't bring myself to watch any of these clips but judging from what everyone else is saying, the redesign may have ironically made it even less watchable than it could have been since you can't laugh at the forsaken hybrid creature they had at first so now we are just stuck with really middle of the road humor that was left intact during the film's delay. This was going to disappoint in one way or another no matter what filmmakers did.
