Samurai Jack is making a comeback on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC in a brand new video game, due out this summer.
Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time by Adult Swim Games and Japanese developer Soleil Games is a 3D hack-and-slash title based on the popular American animated series, and takes place before Jack's final fight with Aku – the evil entity that trapped him in alternate timelines.
As the player, it'll be your job to guide Jack through multiple different timelines to reach Aku and stop him once and for all. Throughout the game, you'll be able to wield a variety of different weapons – covering both melee and ranged attacks.
The 3D artwork retains the style of animated series and the development team behind the game is comprised of individuals who previously worked on the Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive series.
More details about this upcoming release will be revealed by the Samurai Jack series' creator Genndy Tartakovsky and head writer Darrick Bachman at the Adult Swim PAX East panel later this week.

Not sure about anyone else, but I was a little underwhelmed by the otherwise good series finale.
I hope this game will be an epic (alternative) conclusion to Samurai Jack.
Need to see more gameplay but this glimpse has piqued the interest.
I'm really surprised that such an old show is getting a game. Did the show recently get re-aired or something? Or is this like, in preparation for a new show?
No problem with it and I have some friends who'd probably be quite excited to play it, but would kids today have any idea what this is?
@Heavyarms55 I maybe misinterpreting your statement but it sounds like you're unaware of the 5th season that aired on Adult Swim a few years ago to provide a proper conclusion.
@Elvie That's a thing? You're right, I was not aware of that! I don't really watch regular TV anymore and stay off of social media. So I had no idea.
@Heavyarms55
You should watch it, it was a great conclusion to the series.
I can't wait. My friends and I have been gushing all day. I hope there's a physical release to sit alongside my copy of Shadow of Aku.
I’m interested. Not sold yet, I just need to see more. But I loved the series, so I’m really pulling for this one.
That laugh is annoying AF
Funny, I was just browsing the eShop's "Coming Soon" section a couple hours ago and saw this. I thought, "Whoa, this looks pretty good; when was it announced?" The answer was right then, apparently.
@Heavyarms55 The final season had some of the best animation I've seen in the West since The Legend Of Korra (well, the animation was done in a Korean studio but I think it counts as Western).
They also upped the maturity and violence just a tad where it was impactful and not unwelcomed.
Tartakovsky may do some questionable work like Hotel Transylvania but his television projects, Samurai Jack and Primal, have done a great job of demonstrating that Western animation can still be a top notch expression of art.
EXTRA THICC! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
No, but seriously, I'd love to play a Samurai Jack game. Hope this is convincing enough. (A light and shadow stealth boss level would definitely do it.)
@Elvie I don't mean to be argumentative but, if it was done by a Korean studio then it wasn't western animation. I think the fact that they went to a Korean studio is just more proof that animation of this style is nearly dead in the west at this point. Now, there's absolutely nothing wrong with western writers going and hiring the abundant talent in Japan and Korea, in fact, I would encourage and welcome that.
@Heavyarms55 If you watch the game trailer you'll see some of the events from the 5th season. Jacks suited up in Armor, has a beard, now also wields guns due to the fact that he lost his sword. The 5th season is real hectic, it even has Jack take the first human life he had to take in his quest to stop Aku.
@mist It maybe because its not the original VA for Aku. Sadly Akus voice actor died a while back, sadly before the 5th season was made.
@patbacknitro18 I guess they really made the most of the show being on Adult Swim. I can't imagine Cartoon Network would have let that fly. Toonami maybe, but they'd censor the word "kill" because it's alright to kill people if you just say "destroy" instead. (memories of Gundam Wing on American TV)
@Heavyarms55 Oh yea they used the switch to Adult Swim to its full advantage. I wouldn't say they went too far with it, many of the episodes are set up like the earlier seasons episodes. But there are a few episodes that definitely push that more adult rating. One of the big plot points of the 5th season is Jack contemplating Seppuku because, believing he failed everyone by losing his sword and just wanting it all to end.
"Get up samurai, we got a city to free from AKU"
But can I save... /her/? o/)(o
@KingBowser86 Beat me to it.
Nice to see Samurai Jack back in the game.
Yes, this will be amazing
@MasterGraveheart Nah there's no saving her, she was doomed from the beginning. It was one final low blow from Aku to Jack.
Good old SEGA! Looks great! this is so on the Switch list.
@Heavyarms55 I understand your view. I mainly based my previous reasoning on the fact that the creators of Avatar are accomplished artists who developed its aesthetic.
They made up the character designs and not only based the visual approach on anime, such as the Ghibli films, but also the numerous Asian art styles beyond Japan.
However, their co-operation with various Korean studios for Avatar and Korra was definitely valuable in polishing their vision into something concrete.
Wake up samurai. We’ve got a city to burn.
Straight to the top of my hype list.
I love the animated series to death but this game doesn’t look that interesting. I mean- why did people feel this needed to be a thing? Can’t we just enjoy the show on its own merits without resorting to a shallow cashgrab?
@MasterGraveheart This tugs at my heartstrings.
@Elvie Is Hotel Transylvania questionable? I didn't love the movie and it was very mainstream safe – but I didn't hate it either – so I'm curious – what do you mean?
I'm an artist and I can't remember it being bad from that pov.
Ah nice, always enjoyed that series.
On my radar. I'm a huge fan of the show. Provided that the gameplay is decent and the Switch version runs nicely (doesn't look too taxing) then I'll snap it up. If it's a sub-par port then I'll pick up on PS4, though I kinda hate doing that. Just feels better playing on a Nintendo system. I have that hard-wired into me.
@Elvie I think Tartakovsky does "pay the bills" projects and passion projects. I'm generally okay with that if we get good Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, Clone Wars, etc.
The big one he keeps trying to sell is a new Popeye feature done in Fleishman style. Maybe Cuphead's success has created a market for one? I'd be excited to see it.
Is this Samurai Jack from the '90s?
@biglittlejake Early 2000's.
@brunojenso I meant questionable in the sense that it's standard animated family comedy fare. Not the worst movies ever, just decidedly not his best work.
@Elvie Gotcha
"All things must come to an end, even the future". 🤣 A good looking hack n slash with humor, yes please!
