Re: Locked Character Roster In Smash Bros. Ultimate Raises Concerns About Tournament Play

EeryPetrol

@CaptChaos There's tutorials online on how to unlock the full roster in 90 minutes. It's plausible that if you spend a day playing Smash Brothers in a healthy manner you will be able to unlock everything without even trying. Especially if you're just playing regular Smash matches, which I'm told unlocks characters rather quickly. I'm focusing on Online and World of Light because I like my addiction fed to me with a slow drip.

Re: Locked Character Roster In Smash Bros. Ultimate Raises Concerns About Tournament Play

Non-issue. My friend got Smash Friday and through casual play unlocked all the characters on... Friday.

I would say the opposite about Smash; the element of discovery is downplayed too much. I would have wanted to unlock levels. I would have wanted character unlocks to be less common. I would have wanted that nothing appears in the game until you get the chance to unlock it. I know I'm an outlier, but if we're just reporting opinions there you go.

Re: Telltale Games Voice Actor Posts Message About Incomplete Projects

@mauhlin12 Agreed. I actually feel the game seasons suffered from the same problem as their inspiration; each time the crew arrives somewhere, anything good is not what it seems. Anything bad is worse. Sadly it hits the fan. Main character(s) escape at a cost. Some new characters join so you can keep killing characters off while maintaining a roster. It becomes formulaic. To the point where even in this high-stakes series, I've called its bluff on fake-deaths on multiple occasions just because it didn't make sense to the formula for this character to die at that time.

Re: Nintendo Switch System Update 6.0.0 Is Now Live

They announced well in advance that online would become paid. I am now paying less than 5 euros a year for this (via family plan). Again, I've eaten sandwhiches in two minutes more expensive than this. As long as the stuff they provide works, I'm fine with it being barebones. And no, connection difficulties upon release are no problem. Judge it when the launch spike passed.

If there was a premium subscription with services on par with PS/XB in both costs and benefits, I'd seriously consider it. But I'm still happy with what Nintendo did put on the table.

Re: Is 'Switch Tax' A Real Concern, Or Just A Myth?

EeryPetrol

I've been happy to pay the original launch price for the re-release on switch. It's new on switch. Why would they already discount? There's a whole market of people that would buy games on the Switch that would not have bought them on other platforms, if only for the portability.

Re: DOOM Eternal On Switch Will Target 30fps

EeryPetrol

Fair enough. Switch is underpowered as a home console. ID Software know where to make the right compromises (and Panic Button are basically the Lords of Ports). And more importantly, they are making a statement that it's worth the effort to make these compromises in order to launch on Switch. On top of that, they're saying that in their eyes the compromises don't significantly detract from the game's experience. A subjective statement of course, but it's very relevant that the developer fully supports the Switch version as a representation of their triple A game.

Re: Masahiro Sakurai Says That Super Smash Bros. Ultimate "Could Ruin" Future Games

The quote's a bit arrogant, like the game's title. I was a bit disappointed when I heard they were throwing everyone in. How does that inspire the devs? A next step for Smash could be to take a new direction and throw out what they don't need. Like what the Zelda devs said they did with BotW. We'd complain. And we'd love it.

For example; I was hoping that they would bring the character roster way, way down; Smash 1 levels. Then you'd have the freedom to do stuff like revealing a new challenger once that character gets its own game on Switch, and design the character around that game. So we'd already have BotW Link (Hang-glider, Shield surf!) and Odyssey Mario (nerfed Cappy Throw!!), but there would be no Samus yet because Metroid Prime 4 hasn't dropped yet. And we'd know that when it does, we can boot up Smash, and a new challenger would appear.

It would not please everyone. But it sure would be exciting.

That said, the E3 reveal featured competitive play, and bringing all previous games together is a strong attempt at bringing the divided smash competitive scene (melee vs. 4) together. Doing so would be an accomplishment that's worth a less innovative iteration.

Re: Game Freak Says Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu And Eevee May Be Forward Compatible

EeryPetrol

@liljmoore You're right that it's not Gamefreaks fault. But outside their influence, Switch owners have been looking for new flagship games to continue Odyssey's and Breath of the Wild's success into year two, and Pokemon Core RPG seemed like the most likely contender. So the disappointment is understandable as well, and it shows in Nintendo's dropped stock value. But that's the publisher's trouble and should not weigh down on the developer, who is doing a great job.

Re: Nintendo's Bill Trinen Wants To Dispel The Myth That Smash Bros. Became Popular By "Accident"

EeryPetrol

I got that same feeling of intent from HAL Lab's choice to make the new Smash the ultimate merger of all previous Smash. At first I was disappointed, because I just wanted them to find a fresh perspective and see what new direction that would take them. But a day later I realized that Nintendo is now supporting competitive play, what with the E3 invitational, and that the competitive scene is split between Smash Melee and Smash 4. Bringing in another very different game could potentially further split the community into three parts. However, if your starting principle for your new game would be to bring the community together, the game would look a lot like what we're getting.

Re: Nintendo Hasn't Revealed Its Full 2018 Lineup, Says Outgoing President Tatsumi Kimishima

EeryPetrol

Switch year one saw two critically acclaimed flagship re-imaginings of household franchises. That's a high bar that Nintendo should think twice to set again for year two when talking to their shareholders. Let's Go is not their flagship Pokemon game, which is expected in 2019. And Smash Brothers Ultimate has been presented as a deluxe edition of all previous Smash Brothers games together, rather than a whole new re-imagining. I'd sooner compare it to Splatoon 2 than Mario Odyssey in terms of evolving the franchise (I love Splatoon 2, don't get me wrong). Both Let's Go and Ultimate will do well, but arguably, Nintendo has no games in year two that can carry on the success that Odyssey and Breath of the Wild started.

Re: PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds Creator Drops Lawsuit Against Fortnite

EeryPetrol

It's an arrogant claim to call this genre yours to the point of suing. The Battle Royale style is very much on the nose about its inspiration, having the same title as the cult movie that features 'players' being dropped on an Island with only the last man standing getting out alive, featuring periodically disabling of regions to drive the players closer together and structures where useful equipment may be found. With regards to other games, PUBG was no immaculate conception either, with games such as DayZ already laying the foundations.

Re: A Mysterious Countdown Has Appeared In Fortnite On Switch

EeryPetrol

@Sculptor Rocket League launched on switch with low graphics @ 60fps, and later brought on option of higher graphics @ 30fps. Fortnite launched on switch with 30fps, so you will not be seeing a similar update with increased graphical quality because they cannot sacrifice their framerate any further.

Re: GameStop Has Leaked 10 Unannounced Full-Price Switch Game Listings

EeryPetrol

I'm looking at E3 to set the tone of Switch year 2 as a worthy successor to the fantastic year one. I thought that would mean Smash and Pokemon as this year's Mario and Zelda. But the Pokemon core game is now announced to come late 2019, with Let's Go filling different shoes this year. So I'm looking for that one flagship game to tag-team with Smash this year. A reveal that Metroid Prime 4 has received the same level of development and revamping as Zelda and Mario, with a 2018 release, would be the best bet for this.
