Re: Win a copy of Crossing Souls

NO ONE TELL ME THE ANSWER! I've been puzzling away at it all day and I am THIS close to figuring it out. Does the answer need to be an integer though? No, wait, don't tell me. And it's a positive number too, right? Never mind... I WILL get this!

Re: Hardware Review: Satisfye Pro Gaming Grip for Nintendo Switch

DrJiggle

I was all set to dump on this product as being overpriced, ridiculous and unnecessary, but then my hand cramped up from too many hours playing Hollow Knight in portable mode without this grip and I couldn't type a word of it. So the more I thought about it, and saw the current price ($18?), it seems pretty reasonable for what you get. Maybe I'll check it out (EDIT: Pledge submitted). It seems like it could prevent flexing of the Switch itself, which is one of my inner Geordi La Forge's concerns when it comes to the structural integrity of the system.

Re: The Switch Version Of Broforce Is Locked And Loaded For This September

DrJiggle

I'm the first one to look cynically on any game that attempts to a) cash in on the popular culture of the 1980s b) saturates itself with an atmosphere of over the top violence and c) has overly pixel-y graphics but with all that said I LOVE this game. The violence is cartoony without being grotesque, the '80s action movie milieu is handled extremely well with some clever puns that affect gameplay even more cleverly, and the retro graphics are charming and finely detailed.

Beyond that, though, the gameplay is awesome and incredibly addictive. Every bro has their own unique weapons and abilities which means there's more than one way to get through the level. And since which bro you get is randomized for the most part, the levels are very replayable (which is good, because you'll die a lot).

Even beyond THAT though, this game is perfect for a portable device as it's something you can pick up and play in short bursts (or sink several hours into at once, as there's a ton of content and it's very addictive).

Anyway, I didn't expect to like this game at all, but I really do.

Re: Feature: What Does Nintendo's Shutdown Of ROM-Sharing Sites Mean For Video Game Preservation?

DrJiggle

Who cares? Aren't video games so much better now than they were 30 years ago, anyway? Between "Hollow Knight" and the original "Metroid", I know which one I'd rather play.

Seriously, though, Frank Cifaldi's (The Video Game History Foundtation, Digital Eclipse) GDC talk from a couple of years ago is what really opened my eyes to the issue of preserving video games as they were originally played (at least as closely as possible). It's excellent. https://www.gdcvault.com/play/1023470/-It-s-Just-Emulation

Re: Review: Hunting Simulator (Switch)

DrJiggle

I'll stick with "Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" then for my (albeit non-existent) hunting simulation needs... though with the Champions' Ballad DLC, that game very quickly turned into more of a "roadkill simulator".

Now all Link needs is an "I Eat My Roadkill" bumper sticker and mudflaps for the Master Cycle Zero.

Re: Review: West of Loathing (Switch eShop)

DrJiggle

This game is hilarious. I've played many "funny" games over the many years I've been a gamer, but this is the first one (since Kingdom of Loathing, I guess) that's spoken to my sense of humo(u)r so directly. From the moment I got that first "Stupid Walking" perk, I was hooked. The quality and the cleverness of the wordplay just takes it all to a whole 'nother level.

And yes, OMG, the spittoons.. the glorious, glorious spittoons....

Re: Nintendo UK Is Asking For As Much As £180 To Repair Cracked Switch Consoles

DrJiggle

@Pod Looking at the photographs, it definitely seems to be due to some twisting force or torsion on the case. Whenever I use the system in handheld mode, I always wonder if the connectors holding on the joycon are really strong enough to support the twisty force my hands put on them.

I'm not using a lot of force, by any means, it just that the the human hand is built to rest in one position, and the position needed used to hold the joycon encourages the kind of force that would twist the Switch, bending it towards the user. It sounds like the joycon connectors are strong enough to take this force, but maybe not the plastic case, right where it's thinnest. Just a guess, though.

Re: Poll: Is Your Nintendo Switch Cracking Under The Pressure?

DrJiggle

I've only gotten my Switch within the past six months but the amount of heat it generates while docked convinced me to buy a $12 USB-powered PC fan (120mm with an in-line speed control) and just prop that up against the back of the dock to blow the hot air away. Hopefully that prevents any cracking for a while.

Re: Review: Bomber Crew (Switch eShop)

DrJiggle

It looks like an interesting game, but there's just something about experiencing the horrors of war, especially for the crew of WWII-era bomber, where they would literally need to hose the things out after they'd been shot through with holes, through the eyes of a chibi MySims character that seems a little off-putting to me.

Re: Poll: As "Gaming Disorder" Becomes A Thing, Is It Time To Assess How Much You Play?

DrJiggle

It kind of sounds like the gaming industry is reacting the way Big Tobacco in the U.S. first did in the late 1980s and early 1990s, first denying that their product was addictive and then suing the regulatory agencies that tried to promote the message that the product was addictive (though the games industry isn't quite there yet). Video games can be addictive (they're designed, knowingly or unknowingly, to activate the pleasure centers of our brain and trigger dopamine rushes... and there's nothing wrong with that, in itself) — not to everyone, but to certain people, certainly. And to the extent that people with that addiction spend time playing video games at the expense of self-care activities (good nutrition and exercise), then it can definitely impact their physical health. Everything in moderation.

Re: Review: Iro Hero (Switch eShop)

DrJiggle

NintendoLife does review crappy games, though ("Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn"), they just give them 7s. But I agree, the score is just an arbitrary number to some, but not to all and it's hard to differentiate quality when everything is bunched up in the 7 to 8 range.

Re: Review: Iro Hero (Switch eShop)

DrJiggle

One constructive exercise for any NintendoLife reviewer to undertake would be to read both the NintendoLife (gave it a 7) and Destructoid (gave it a 3) reviews of "Shaq-Fu: A Legend Reborn" and maybe do some soul-searching.

Re: Review: Iro Hero (Switch eShop)

DrJiggle

I don't think "review score inflation" is just a NintendoLife problem. According to Open Critic, NintendoLife's review scores (on average) are only 0.82 points higher than the average of other review publications. But yes, if you look at the NintendoLife bell-curve, it's heavily distributed between 7s and 8s. Fewer than 2% of the games they've reviewed have received a 1 or 2 with Fewer than 0.3% of the games they've reviewed having received a 1. One would expect a more even distribution unless games released on Nintendo systems are all just that amazing.
