Towards the end of last year, the creators of ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove informed Kickstarter backers that the project had unfortunately been delayed. Thankfully, the game now seems to be much closer to a release, with a new aim of "fall" being put in place.
Greg Johnson, the founder of developer HumaNature Studios, has said the following to update eager fans:
“We ARE releasing this year!! Right now we have our sights set on a fall release. We will be making a specific release plan announcement in regards to dates as soon as we have that nailed down.
We are also going to be opening a closed beta within the next couple weeks for our early-access backers, and we’ll be looking for your feedback! Also, the Nintendo Switch version of the game is just about ready to be submitted for certification by Nintendo, and the other console versions are not too far behind. I’ll give you more details about all of this before this update is done.”
The game was actually shown off during PAX East last year, and it was already looking pretty great back then. We're interested to see how the game has evolved since then and will keep an eye out for more news on its upcoming "mad funky" Switch release.
Did you back this project on Kickstarter? Do you like the '90s vibe that's positively seeping out of that trailer above? Let us know your impressions down below.

There's something about the art style that doesn't sit right with me.
...I forgot all about this. will keep an eye out. LMAO.
Not a fan of the art-style, but the original is one of my all-time favorite games, and I'm looking forward to playing another entry in that same vein.
Really hope this turns out well.
JAMMIN'!
This is a funny one. I loved the original but if you go back and play it now it’s not too great. They have clearly based this on the original so don’t know how well this will play today.
Funkotronic.
Love the old games, so I am really looking forward to this new installment.
I just might
Day 1!! I wonder if they will include the 2 original Genesis games?
please bring a new 'zombies ate my neighbors' out.
please!
Cool

I assume Toe-J and Big E are getting pagers to play Skyrim.
@Mgene15
Your avatar made me boot up my everdrive 64 & play mystical ninja 64. Lol!
I love Toejam & Earl! <3
Looking forward to playing this, but it's also the reason I don't back Kickstarter projects anymore.
Looks funkadellic! This game was such a favorite of mine back in the day. It was what made owning a Genesis worthwhile!
O benevolent Sega gods of a time long forgotten,
Take pity on your humble servants, and deem us funky. Let us be graced with a physical version, if it is thine will.
The original was one of my favourite Megadrive games so I backed this as soon as it was announced back in 1998 or something like that. Can't wait to finally play it later this year
More like Toejam & Earl Back in Adobe Flash. Not liking this art style. They should have either stuck with the original pixel art, or should have went with the 3D style from the OG Xbox version.
So, uh, the Xbox game, never happened?
This is giving me frown lines
Loved playing the old ones with my cousin back in the day. This one looks okay, just trying something different with the art style, but I don't mind it.
It's very different. I hope they can deliver. The best option for this game would have been to have some online multiplayer to take things to the next level.
Finally. It seems like I've been waiting for this for a long time! Loved the original two and still play them on the Genesis...would love to see the third one re-released on all the consoles too, since many people didn't have it on X-box and Dreamcast owners like myself, who were waiting for it, never got it!!!!
