@Luke937 Until about 2 years ago video game consoles were banned in China, that is why Nintendo does not have a presence there yet, they do however want to move in to that area now that the ban has lifted, but it won't do them any good if the piracy is so rampant that people buy the knock offs over the official version.
I don't care for the guides and have never bought them to use as guides, but I have bought a few of the hardcover ones that look really nice. Have all the Zelda ones, a couple Assassin's Creed, Uncharted and Fallout.
@Giygas_95 I am loving RDR2 but anyone who says the controls don't suck are not being honest with themselves. They are not very intuitive and sometimes it makes it hard to make a split second decision. They are a step back from even the first game.
I had success with getting the power glove to work on a few games, problem was it took to much actual work to get the thing to behave as intended, sometimes you would be more focused on the globe than the game.
@Yosher for most sports fans it is very important to to them to have the most up to date rosters, people on correct teams, any rule changes etc. just like for fans of anything else it’s important for it to be right.
@sikthvash You may have had a few bad runs, but I have experienced the star moving behinds us as well, it get's re positioned at random when it's moved. In fact my very first game had the exact opposite outcome, the person rolling the worst won because it first moved close to the start, then moved to a position where the easiest path was a branch from the start so he got to to faster than those of us that had to come back and he picked up an extra start card along the way on top of the fact that the stars had doubled by this point so he got three that time for a total of 4. Really, anyone can win because the stakes can change at any time.
I have however gotten a ton of enjoyment out of the partner battle, where you go through in teams of two and you share dice rolls. The strategy in that mode can get pretty deep at times, especially since you have to actually land on the spaces not just past them.
@RudyC3 Back then game development was a different beast. It actually wasn't uncommon for game data to be on individual PC's or a couple of PCs and at risk to be wiped out like this. There are tons of stories out there about lost source code from even completed games. Most of these companies were in cramped offices with little staff and little equipment during this time period. I don't know what kind of setup Gamefreak had, but before Pokemon they were a pretty small company, they started as a magazine and moved in to videogames.
@Heavyarms55 If your looking to do a piece like this, best thing to do is build it out what you have so you know what you need and how many, then head over to brinklink and buy what you need. Most common pieces can be bought for pennies.
@Other-Brother @BradC40 Unfortunately K'nex has the rights for Nintendo, it's a shame, would be awesome to see what Lego could do with them, or even just fan projects made in to official sets through their Ideas program like the recent Voltron set.
This is just all about keeping people playing on PS4. Sony knows that the people that have invested significant time and money in to the account linked to PS4 won’t abandon that just to play on Switch.
Guess it’s a good thing the game is free, I know I would be hella outraged if I paid money for the game only to find out my account was locked on another platform.
The game is not my cup of tea I played on PC and didn’t enjoy it, but there is no denying its popularity, so Sony knows what they are doing.
Most of the time investors don’t really have a heartbeat on things they invest in, just general knowledge. They know Pokémon is “good” so the mention of anything Pokémon has the potential to cause a surge.
Likewise, they probably don’t even know what QOL is and that gamers don’t care about it, they just heard something was cancelled and got jumpy assuming it was bad. In reality it’s probably a good thing since that R&D can be reinvested in something the user base cares about.
As many have said it’s not suprising the number works since it’s the same one printed on stuff today. For me the biggest surprise it that the support line has not been outsourced to India or something.
@Heavyarms55 Comcast has ridiculous customer service. I will never use them again. They tried to bill me $1400 for equipment that I turned in to the Comcast store last time I moved. The denied I turned it in and refused to review the cameras on the location. I had to file a police report to get the police to review the cameras and prove I turned in the equipment.
Ya if this is from China, by the time Nintendo would even make any headway with lawsuits the Switch Successor would be out so it’s not even worth it.
Lego had been battling Chinese knock offs for years and just barely the end of last year made some significant progress where Chinese courts agreed to recognize their trademark and granted them protection under their anti unfair competition law. But I think that took damn near a decade....
@hYdeks absolutely, to be clear I wasn’t saying people should buy 3rd party stuff. Just reflecting on the price be quality. The argument could also be made that 3rd parties are trying to go for the same types of profit margins but at a lower cost, and the only way to do that would be to use cheap, substandard components.
I have not bought anything 3rd party since the SNES days when I bought a cheap controller and it was crap. Aside from like cases and the obvious things of course.
Even if you think it’s great right off it won’t last long.
@hYdeks a lot of the price of the official dock is the built in markup though. Walmart makes a profit of $22.50 on every dock sold, so Nintendo probably makes equal to that or more profit from every dock sold, which would mean at least $45 of the docks $90 price is simply markup.
It’s a pretty common thing that retailers make almost nothing on the base product and bank on the accessories super high markups to really make money. That’s why HDMI cables are $40+ from a retailer and $3 online.
They Nyko dock issue is likely just bad USB-C implementation. Like someone above mentioned C is actually pretty scary. I fried a Pi experimenting with a USB C port I wired wrong by not completely understanding the documentation I was looking at, and when I say fry I don’t mean bricked it, that thing went up in smoke. Also when I bought my first phone that used USB-C charging the person at the store told me so not buy third party chargers for this phone they will ruin it, if you need another one buy the official one. They phone store didn’t even have generic chargers which I thought was odd. I thought he was just full of it until sure enough I found all the reviews for third party chargers were complaints it ruined a device.
@Anti-Matter one thing that holds true in life anywhere you go is that perception=reality to most people. To your average gamer when a console does not have a lot of AAA releases the perception is that it has nothing to play.
I honestly don’t play the most popular AAA games most of the time, I don’t play COD, Battlefield, Madden, FIFA, or a lot of the games like them, but the reality is these games sell a ton each year so the perception is that if a console does not have these titles it must no be worth their time.
So yes, AAA games are the oxygen of a system wether we like it or not, I personally would be fine without most of them but I have been gaming since the 80s so I have more diverse gaming habits. To a lot of more casual gamers indie games are crap and not worth their time and anything that does not have HD graphics is graphically inferior and not worth their time.
You will find that the self proclaimed “Hard Core” gamers that only play AAA games are actually your true casual gamers.
I enjoyed the hell out of my Wii U and didn’t often lack for much to play but I can see the faults with the 3rd party support as well. I also am not only a Nintendo gamer so I always have plenty to play regardless.
@sillygostly I doubt it, Nintendo knows no self respecting pirate would play this crap. This kind of stuff is just filler that allows them to boast about how many games are crammed on their HDD that they willl never play
@Rika_Yoshitake that’s why Nintendo partnered with someone that has an idea what they are doing for the online service, so it will probably be OK if Nintendo just lets them do their thing.
That said I don’t think I would openly admit that news section took 5 people a year to make.....
@RusevDay How is the headline not correct? Netflix got an update on a console that you wouldn’t expect, that’s exactly what the headline says. Considering it’s effectively dead I sure wouldn’t expect the Wii U Netflix to get an update.
And the tag line is implying that surely it’s time to release it in Switch, not that it IS on switch, as in its time for Netflix to make a switch from Wii U to Switch
Unless I missed something I don’t think the game rejected 5 Times was Valhalla. For one I think it’s popular enough to warrant a Switch version, but also that game was made in Game Maker Studio, a program that can export to just about every console except the Switch, which means the game would have to be completely re written to run on Switch since there is no native export for it. Doesn’t seem worth it.
@KIRO same, I have not missed the streaming apps or browser or any of that stuff on my Switch. I’m glad it’s not there, I don’t even use that stuff on the other consoles that do have it portable or otherwise.
@yuwarite then do the homework yourself. Look at the Wii remote and accelerometer patents, and look at the patents for other controllers, cell phones, etc. They are different technologies. Just because 2 similar things exist don't meant they cane be done 2 different ways.
You don't think the PS4, galaxy line of phones, or iPhones would not be worth getting a piece of
@yuwarite its not motion controls that are the target, it's very specific ways of doing it. The accelerometer in the Wii remote is not the same as the one in Sony and Microsofts controllers.
@Linked2thaPast I played the hell out of this game to. I was also a huge Die Hard fan so I loved this game. The fact that each movie was a different type of game was cool at the time.
@GeneralGhandi it's sold out. Amazon changed the landing page at the last minute so nobody got notified. The link amazon actually used for the preorders is gone now. They basically screwed everyone waiting.
@rjejr that is copywrite, not patents. They are two different things. You can weaken your claim to copywrite if you don't defend it, that is not true with a patent.
That is why Nintendo vigorously defends their IP (which is copywrite) because if they don't, if someone wanted to release something that truly did harm the brand the courts could choose to allow it to continue because Nintendo ignored other infringement. You don't lose your copywrite, you just weaken your standing if you allow rampant infringement and decide to attack one instance of it.
The only way to lose a patent is for the courts to invalidate it for being to broad or not patentable, or for the time to run out.
You can completely lose a trademark though if it becomes to generic, Aspirin is an example of such. This is something Google is constantly fighting.
I'm a collector, but I collect my stuff me me not because of the potential resale value. I would never sell my stuff, I don't really care what it's worth.
The tabs on the SNES are barely noticeable, an average person wouldn't even know they had been removed unless the knew specifically what to look for. But on the flip side, I acquired 4 SNES systems in an auction lot a while back and sold them off, I got more than average for them because they could play Super Famicom games.
There is also an adapter you can buy so you don't have to remove the tabs or take a game apart. But nobody really cares about the tabs.
@InternetBowser the expiration date on coins piss me off, especially when they put out so little people want. When (if) something good drops you will find all your coins expired.
You should probably lean a bit more about history then. Sony never wanted to enter the video game market. Kutaragi was working with Nintendo entirely in secret and almost lost his job over it. After Nintendo screwed them the CEO at the time wanted to cut the losses and drop it. Kutaragi convinced them to develop the PS One and release it, putting his job on the line. If the system hadn't been successful he would have been fired and there would have been no PS2.
The PS2 was immensely successful for Sony and VERY profitable. PS3 had its struggles but came in to its own in the end.
PS4 is on track to surpass PS2 in profitability, that's he reason the PS4 Pro was not a powerhouse upgrade like Scorpio. You can bet your ass Sony cares about profit with the PS4 because that is one of the only divisions making money right now keeping Sony afloat. Sony has taken the hits when necessary but being profitable has always been their concern.
Yes systems are sold at a loss from time to time. But that's acceptable when you know you can make the money back through other means like software sales. At a point during the 360 they were bleeding far more money than they could ever bring in. That's also why Nintendo plays close to the chest on systems price. They know they can't guarantee enough secondary revenue to float the console loss.
As for Microsoft, your right they have not cared about profit in the past because they had an eventual end goal on mind (dominate the living room) and at the time they were willing to cut the losses to meet an end. However that has not materialized, and probably won't, so they are readjusting their strategy. The current CEO does care about profit for the division. They still have shareholders to answer to. They can only bandaid if for so long before it just becomes to much money spent.
A friend of mine that works for Blizzard has said that from behind closed door talks, it sounds like Microsoft is trying to position the Xbox as more of a steam machine that a game console. From the last year or so, I would say I believe him.
I loved my 360 and have nothing against Xbox, but the fact is it has been a money sink in the past and they can't continue that forever with no clear end game. Their real money is coming from enterprise especially Azure, so it's only a matter of time before they start to put more focus in that area.
The Xbone is doing OK and has managed to right the ship atm while still not being where Microsoft would like it's making some money. But before that the entire Xbox division was nothing but a money hole and bleeding money. The current CEO fully intended to either sell or spin off the Xbox division when he took his position and was very open about that, but he was convinced to keep it for a while.
If it ever turned in to a money hole again he would probably dump it.
@HSuzumiyaVI and they are not helping now, they are just enforcing their policy that has always been there. Once the system launches it will be just like the NES mini.
BTW those prices eBay recommends when you list an item are automated based on what the item is typically selling for. So that wasn't eBay saying hey screw these guys good, that was the average selling price of the system at the time, buyers set that suggested price not eBay.
They are not fighting scalpers. The Scalpers are their best customer. Hell the even loosened the restriction for them. Now they can sell less than 30 days out, the policy used to be absolutely no pre order sales, you had to have the item in hand to list it.
To be clear, eBay isn't trying to fight Scalpers. The policy states that you can't sell pre orders, so in the case of the SNES mini they are enforcing their policy not fighting Scalpers. Once the thing is released it will be a free for all.
The only real way to end the scalping is for the morons to quit buying at inflated prices. That would force the Scalpers to sell at near retail and it would become to much work for little profit so they would stop.
The problem isnt the power. The problem is that the platform has not proven enough to make it worth the custom development required to get the games running properly. They cant copy/paste/tweak like they can between Xbox/PS/PC so it requires more investment and work to get the game running properly. They don't want to do that, and spend that money, when there is no guaranteed ROI. Nintendo fans are historically finicky and you can never tell how they will react to to third party games.
People crack me up. I hate the icon but I can ignore it. Seriously, what kind of threat is uninstalling the game, they already have your money so why do they care?
I travel tons for work, to me the Switch is a portable console, so I really don't care if that's how developers treat it as long as the games they bring are good.
Work has been insanely busy lately so I would not have been able to play Zelda yet if not for the portability. I am playing MK8 like a brand new game because of it, even though I owned it on Wii U I didn't get to fully experience it.
Still have not played Horizon, and I didn't get to play through all of Skyrim before so I will definitely pick up the Switch version.
That said, even if it was capable, I wouldn't want everything on Switch as the others, because the divers libraries give me stuff to play on PS4 while I'm home.
That is pretty impressive. Can't believe the screen didn't break (the actual LCD not the plastic/digitizer).
What's crazy is how the device impacts can affect its damage.I dropped my phone over 10 feet on to a concrete floor it bounced then cartwheeled a few feet and the only damage was a dented corner. I later lost that phone in the lake. the replacement phone (same phone) I knocked of a chair arm and it fell 2 feet to a tile floor and bam shattered screen.
Accessories are simply to bring in profit for the retailer, so they are always grossly marked up. That's my main issue with the dock. At a MSRP if $89.99 USD Walmart profits a whopping $22.49 USD. So how much is Nintendo profiting? I would bet at least that much.
Meh I don't have a Samsung phone, nor will I ever buy one, all of them I have had were garbage. My phone is USB C though, I still don't think I'm to interested in this.
@techdude all the Gameboy/GBC/GBA games I own still have working batteries. Still though, they are not hard at all to replace.
I fond myself playing portable more than I ever thought I would. I travel a lot for work, so I figured I would mainly use portable for that and dock it at home, but I have not really been docking it much. Playing it portable is more fun than I thought it would be.
I actually really liked the 2DS because I have big hands and the clamshell designs are a little cramped. The button placement of the 2DS was perfect for me. The New 2DS XL being clamshell design kinds ruines it for me. Also seems to negate teh idea of what teh 2DS was meant to be.. Ah well.
@Nik-Davies I know a couple years ago they lost a case regarding the motion control technology used in the Wii and Wii U but I don't remember all the details.
E3 is over rated anyway, I don't watch any of the conferences anymore, I just get the news as its released online. I think the key thing most of you forget is the E3 was not a show intended for the public. The only reason we get to see it is because news sites stream it. The average consumer doesent even know what it is and that's who Nintendo needs to win over. All of us already know if we want a Nintendo system or not. The people that do watch E3 press conferences are the same people that read these websites. So not having an E3 conference changes nothing. I think anymore it's a huge waste of money for the companies, all 3 of them. Most of is can only get the information online. So who cares if it's by a conference or a Direct.

Re: Feature: Is It Really Cheaper To Order Retro Games Direct From Japan?
@Priceless_Spork
Re: Metroid Prime Trilogy and Majora's Mask Included in Latest European My Nintendo Rewards
@InternetBowser the expiration date on coins piss me off, especially when they put out so little people want. When (if) something good drops you will find all your coins expired.
Re: Hey! Pikmin Shows Nintendo Still Has A Soft Spot For Rare
@gatorboi352
Re: Hey! Pikmin Shows Nintendo Still Has A Soft Spot For Rare
@gatorboi352
Re: eBay Is Trying But Struggling To Stop The Onslaught Of SNES Mini Scalpers
Re: eBay Is Trying But Struggling To Stop The Onslaught Of SNES Mini Scalpers
To be clear, eBay isn't trying to fight Scalpers. The policy states that you can't sell pre orders, so in the case of the SNES mini they are enforcing their policy not fighting Scalpers. Once the thing is released it will be a free for all.
The only real way to end the scalping is for the morons to quit buying at inflated prices. That would force the Scalpers to sell at near retail and it would become to much work for little profit so they would stop.
Re: It's "A Bit Sad" That Switch Isn't More Powerful, Says THQ Nordic
The problem isnt the power. The problem is that the platform has not proven enough to make it worth the custom development required to get the games running properly. They cant copy/paste/tweak like they can between Xbox/PS/PC so it requires more investment and work to get the game running properly. They don't want to do that, and spend that money, when there is no guaranteed ROI. Nintendo fans are historically finicky and you can never tell how they will react to to third party games.
Re: Random: Internet Reacts Badly To The New Snake Pass Menu Icon
People crack me up. I hate the icon but I can ignore it. Seriously, what kind of threat is uninstalling the game, they already have your money so why do they care?
Re: Talking Point: EA and Bethesda Highlight Nintendo Switch as a Portable Powerhouse at E3
Re: Random: Watch What Happens When You Drop a Switch from 1,000 Feet
That is pretty impressive. Can't believe the screen didn't break (the actual LCD not the plastic/digitizer).
What's crazy is how the device impacts can affect its damage.I dropped my phone over 10 feet on to a concrete floor it bounced then cartwheeled a few feet and the only damage was a dented corner. I later lost that phone in the lake. the replacement phone (same phone) I knocked of a chair arm and it fell 2 feet to a tile floor and bam shattered screen.
@GameOtaku these people are rarely out money.
Re: SEGA Forever May Be a Subscription Service for the Company's Iconic Retro Games
@bolt05 Office 365 is pretty successful and growing fast, expected to exceed 100 million users this year.
Re: Editorial: An Empty Box is $5 and a Dock is $89 - Welcome to Switchonomics
@ThomasBW84
Accessories are simply to bring in profit for the retailer, so they are always grossly marked up. That's my main issue with the dock. At a MSRP if $89.99 USD Walmart profits a whopping $22.49 USD. So how much is Nintendo profiting? I would bet at least that much.
Re: Cars 3: Driven To Win Will Be An Argos Switch Retail Exclusive In The UK
I would actually play a cars game that was a moderately decent racer. Kind of a missed opportunity if you ask me.
Re: Hyperkin's SmartBoy Gains Official Samsung Licence, Coming To Retail Later This Year
Meh I don't have a Samsung phone, nor will I ever buy one, all of them I have had were garbage. My phone is USB C though, I still don't think I'm to interested in this.
@techdude all the Gameboy/GBC/GBA games I own still have working batteries. Still though, they are not hard at all to replace.
Re: Eskimo Bob Kickstarter Campaign Announced for the NES
@Nintendoforlife most do it for the challenge
Re: Poll: How Do You Play the Nintendo Switch - As A Portable, Home Console or Hybrid?
I fond myself playing portable more than I ever thought I would. I travel a lot for work, so I figured I would mainly use portable for that and dock it at home, but I have not really been docking it much. Playing it portable is more fun than I thought it would be.
Re: Nintendo Outlines Pricing and Details for DLC in Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
I'll be buying it. Love me some Fire Emblem.
Re: Reggie Explains the Reasoning Behind the New 2DS XL
I actually really liked the 2DS because I have big hands and the clamshell designs are a little cramped. The button placement of the 2DS was perfect for me. The New 2DS XL being clamshell design kinds ruines it for me. Also seems to negate teh idea of what teh 2DS was meant to be.. Ah well.
Re: Federal Court Says Police Sketch Patent Asserted Against Miis Should Never Have Been Granted
@Nik-Davies I know a couple years ago they lost a case regarding the motion control technology used in the Wii and Wii U but I don't remember all the details.
Re: Surprise, Nintendo Isn't Hosting An E3 Press Conference This Year
E3 is over rated anyway, I don't watch any of the conferences anymore, I just get the news as its released online.
