AC on the GameCube was my introduction to the series and WW’s lack of in-game events really felt like a step down, unfortunately. I still loved playing it but in hindsight it’s always felt like the weakest entry in the series (I never played the very similar Wii version).
I have the Pikachu bundle from around the time New Pokémon Snap was released.
I’m not sure what I expected from the bundle but it really is just a Pikachu-shaped silicone sleeve to cover the printer, and not that exciting.
Not really worth it unless you absolutely want to print these kinds of photos, but then again physical photos are so rare these days and gifting them to family and friends can be special.
I think the most relevant point is that most of these titles aren’t new releases. I’d hope third-party developers would take this into account before assuming the console isn’t worth supporting in the future.
Yakuza 0, for instance, was originally released 10 (!) years ago. Those that were really keen on playing it probably did so on another platform.
Doesn’t mean there’s no enjoyment to be had with those types of games, but being able to critically examine the things we consume is pretty important too.
@Cashews You’re probably right but by the same stretch many great artists get their work lumped into ‘generic’ playlists — Spotify and the like — so it’s not always the measure of quality you imply it is.
@GregamanX I think it might be one of my all-time favourites as well. Played it on Game Pass last year. So thankful I gave it a go because it really is fantastic.
@Poodlestargenerica Yes, I agree. I think you’ve hit the nail on the head as to why I dislike the GBA game despite loving the original GBC Philosophers Stone.
@bojackson It was RPG-Lite at best - its mechanics were so much shallower than the GBC turn-based RPG Harry Potter games. It was also incredibly short.
@Noelemahc No, I’m referring to the GBC Philosopher’s Stone that this article is talking about - it was a turn-based RPG which I really enjoyed. The GBC Chamber Of Secrets was also a turn-based RPG, which I haven’t played. The Prisoner Of Azkaban on GBA was an RPG-Lite sequel that felt a lot shallower to me in terms of mechanics and overall game length.
I vaguely remember that it allowed you to carry your end-game level and spells back into a "New Game+" which encouraged me to replay it multiple times.
It's surprisingly ambitious for a handheld game based on a movie license. Apparently, the GBC Chamber of Secrets game is in a similar vein but I never got to play it.
The Game Boy Advance follow-up Prisoner of Azkaban abandoned the RPG formula for a top-down action-platformer and it was sadly inferior - I remember completing it in an evening and feeling disappointed.
"Most fans of the game will remember its finest, and most frustrating moment above all others - the bit where you have to transfer a map to another map. For me, I discovered it entirely by accident, and I'm sure I'm not alone in that. After a confused 20 minutes of trying to draw, button-press, and logic my way to victory, I closed the console and stepped away - only to discover that that's exactly what you're supposed to do. Phantom Hourglass punched through the fourth wall and broke into the meta-game by insisting that you transfer details from the top screen to the bottom screen by folding your DS in half like a book."
Cing's Another Code: Two Memories was the first DS game to use this trick as the solution to a puzzle. It was similarly brain-taxing - I remember closing the lid of my DS in frustration only to reopen it for another shot to discover I had inadvertantly solved it.
@Wolf_Link There are definitely plot twists and strange revelations. Twin Peaks is used as a reference point because it is obviously the main inspiration - the murdered high-school student, the out-of-town detective, the sheriff station and the odd townsfolk with their own individual secrets are all straight out of Twin Peaks.
The combat is like a clunkier version of Resident Evil 4's over-the-shoulder action. This is nothing like a visual novel, but it does have an interesting storyline and intriguing characters. There is an open-world, and the combat only takes place in specific locations; you don't have to worry about combat when you're just exploring the map, for the most part.
I would recommend it if you can tolerate the tedious combat- I would recommend playing on easy mode for the most enjoyable, frustration-free experience.
@westman98 Not true. Digital Foundry confirm that the original ran at a locked 30fps on XBOX 360; the Switch port has an unlocked frame rate but stays above 30fps (on the whole - and certainly never dips anywhere near as low as Deadly Premonition 2's frame rate).
The original Deadly Premonition is a janky game, but a bad frame rate was never an issue.
The author of that article actually has something very interesting to say.
Unfortunately, it’s often true that journalists do not write their own article headlines - the headline is obviously sensationalist which is a bit comical given it’s in regards to Animal Crossing.
I was under the impression that Miyamoto already has a more hands-off mentoring role at Nintendo?
I’m sure Nintendo have had a plan in place for many years already to ensure that Miyamoto’s eventual departure doesn’t hinder the quality and creativity of their output.
There’s no denying his talent and influence, but for a business on Nintendo’s scale it’s daft to think that one person is the sole factor for how competent and successful they will be.
I mean Disney still seem to be doing okay without Walt Disney - and it’s been nearly 60 years now?
I don’t want to sound dismissive of Miyamoto. Obviously he will be greatly missed, and his legacy will continue to reap rewards through the people he has mentored and passed his knowledge onto.
So did Warner sell Atari Games to Namco at some point?
There’s a confusing part in the article in which we learnt that Warner sold the consumer and PC division of the business to Jack Tramiel who rebranded as Atari Corp. Warner held on to the coin-op part of the business which remained as Atari Games.
But then we learn that Namco sold Atari Games to Atari Corp?
You can carry a crafting bench in your pocket for easy access wherever you are.
Obviously being able to carry the crafting bench with you (no matter how convenient) kind of makes the whole durability mechanic even more pointless and frustrating.
I can’t really think of anything good about it - I actually didn’t mind the durability mechanic in Breath of the Wild because it forced you to experiment with different weapons. But that’s not a concern with Animal Crossing.
@commentlife It’s time-consuming but in a very satisfying way. One of the few games where I genuinely think “I’ll just do one more thing” and then I’m still playing it an hour later 😅
Disappointed in Nintendo Life for attempting to add misleading controversy to the already deafening furore surrounding this game.
You can still adjust the volume on your Switch whenever you want! You don't need an in-game item to do that.
All the Hi-Tech Earbuds do is allow you to tinker with the in-game sounds and their balance in respect to each other.
For example, you can alter the cries of Pokemon to be more overt in the Wild Area or silence them.
They could have just removed this feature entirely and no-one would have batted an eyelid (as far I'm aware no previous Pokemon game has allowed you to alter the balance of in-game sounds).
Not sure why there’s so much saltiness in the comments... I love the Dragon Quest series but this game does not hold up in 2019, and that an archaic 30-something JRPG has had a poor reception should not surprise anyone.
@RazumikhinPG That statement makes no sense whatsoever
Why would selling a fake product result in a failed payment? I’m sure they would have just sold the European version, anyway, which isn’t illegal I don’t think.
Damn you Bandai Namco. I’m a simple boy. I just want my niche farm game :3
@RazumikhinPG Coolshop have sold out now Was wary as it seemed odd they were the only UK stockist and they have a cloudy reputation (not sure if deserved or not).
Guess I’ll have to go with either Amazon Spain or Germany. Hopefully you’ll enjoy it... will probably wait a bit longer now. I still have Rune Factory 4 on 3DS that I’ve never played
@RazumikhinPG Just wish there were reviews as well. It looks great but it seems to have gone under the radar. Even Bandai Namco’s UK Twitter has now tweeted to clarify there’s no UK physical version because people kept asking! They haven’t handled the rollout of its release very well.
@gaga64 Exactly. I don’t find Masuda’s response very convincing, either. Just seems baffling considering how much demand there is for a new Pokémon Snap.
Maybe they’re not convinced that the demand will actually translate into decent sales. But even that seems unlikely considering how many relatively low-key (by the main entries’ standards) Pokémon spin-offs we’ve seen since the original Snap debuted.
@ALinkttPresent Putting time and resources into fan-projects like those mentioned in the article sounds pretty “dedicated and committed” to me.
Also, the legality of a non-profit endeavour seems largely irrelevant if you’re not actually invested in Nintendo’s copyright laws. Which you really shouldn’t be unless you’re one of Nintendo’s lawyers.
The GBA version is wonderful. I have fond memories of playing it. Always felt like I was missing out on something because I didn't have connectivity to the GameCube's "A Wonderful Life" version via the link cable.
I would have preferred a less chibi-like aesthetic for this remake.
@McDerbert If you were enjoying it then why would it suddenly affect your enjoyment because other people started criticising it? I don’t understand your logic!

Re: Feature: How Mega Starmie Became The Internet's New Queer Icon
@ElkinFencer10 The perceived laziness of its design is arguably what makes Mega Starmie so camp. Like, yes, girl, give us nothing!

Not Alex calling Switch 2 a “low-powered device”. We’ve only had it a day 😭
Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Contact
It's a very short and mediocre game, unfortunately.
Any appeal it has almost solely rests on its apparent quirkiness and mystique from those that haven't played it.
The European cover is cute, though.
