Just in case you'd forgotten what with all the sudden Animal Crossing Direct excitement, today sees the launch of four new games on Nintendo Switch Online's NES and SNES apps.
Pop'n Twinbee and Smash Tennis have now joined the full SNES lineup, while Shadow of the Ninja and Eliminator Boat Duel have now appeared for the NES. We shared further details on these games in our announcement post, but here they are again in case you missed it:
SNES
Pop’n TwinBee – The sixth game in the TwinBee series, this vertically scrolling shooter takes place in a cute, poppy setting. TwinBee and WinBee hear that the great Dr. Murdock has lost his wits, so they set off to return him to his normal self. This game was originally released in Japan and Europe in 1993, but this will be its first release in the U.S.
Smash Tennis – In Smash Tennis, the controls may be simple, but there’s plenty of room for skill! With strong shots, weak shots, lobs and eight different court types, you can develop all sorts of approaches, unlocking the deep strategies of tennis. This game was originally released in Japan in 1993 and Europe in 1994, but this will be its first release in the U.S.
NES
Shadow of the Ninja – In the midst of disorder and oppression, two shadow warriors rise to the people’s cry for help. Choose to play as one of two ninja masters from the Iga clan as they infiltrate enemy front lines. Master tactics of stealth as you acquire additional weapons and power-ups in order to overthrow an evil emperor and destroy his wicked empire, solo or with a friend.
Eliminator Boat Duel – In this powerboat racing game, get behind the wheel of one of the fastest machines on the water to earn boatloads of in-game cash. Drivers earn thousands of dollars for competing, and you’ll use your winnings to repair and upgrade your boat to push your competitive edge to its maximum. A little aggression goes a long way – just try not to get sunk yourself, or you’ll be swimming back to dry land.
We recently shared an article asking for your thoughts on Nintendo Switch Online, and particularly whether or not you think it's good value when compared to rival services like PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold. If you haven't already, make sure to head on over and have your say.
Will you be checking out any of these new releases today? Let us know in the comments.

If the menu doesn't say "EliminaOR" boat duel, count me out...
Joking aside though, love me some "Shadow of the Ninja"! So glad we keep getting 3rd party titles.
This service is terrible, I get that the Twinbee series has a lot of fans, and that Shadow of the Ninja is an underrated classic, but the service is still pretty bad, the games are coming too slow, so many classic games still missing and so much better games that could have been released first.
People asked for SNES, it only changed from 2 uninteresting games every month to 4 uninteresting games every 3 months, some people are now asking for Nintendo 64 or Game Boy, this would only change the service to 6 uninteresting games.
Wow, stone cold classics.
Sorry, sorry, I just want Donkey Kong already for crying out loud!
@victordamazio hahaha yea, we got punished for asking for snes games so much.
Oh, wow...
Thank you Nintendo, I'm SO happy with this...
Pfffff....
Sometimes, I feel like where Nintendo is concerned, we're looking at some kind of really bad and cheesy soap opera. There's some entertainment to be had, and what's there is pretty good, but the surrounding services are SO bad, that they're starting to become completely laughable.
If they aren't so already...
At this rate we’ll start getting N64 games some time in 2040.
I would pay more, if they offered more. Right now NSO is less than a beer a month, so there's not much on offer, but I'm paying very little. If they offered more however, I would pay more. I miss Virtual Console so much. The way Nintendo has handled legacy content is probably one of my only real let downs with the Switch.
Nintendo, stop trolling us!!
Japan's selection is mostly familiar titles bringing the lineup closer to the western one (just like Smash Tennis appears now here after joining the Super Famicom app on the isles last time), but there's also Atlantis no Nazo. Kinda makes you wonder if the latter might ever receive an official English version after all these years, too...
I just don't get you people.
Sure, these are not the most popular games, but we already got so many great games, classics and hidden gems alike. If you're not a fan of retro gaming, you shouldn't really complain about a service that's not for you. If you are, there are already tons of worthwile games available, and I doubt you beat all of them.
I understand that you want stuff like Donkey Kong Country and EarthBound, but you can play many games of similar style and quality using this service.
Plus once they give us Donkey Kong Country, you'll probably complain again when they add Legend of the Mystical Ninja, because you don't know that game, and they should've added Mario All-Stars or something. You should take these opportunities and try out some new games you haven't played yet, maybe you'll find some new favorites. Pop'n TwinBee and Shadow of the Ninja are both great games, for example.
I would love to pay more for more content. But this € 18,00 a year is no biggie for me. I can play a variety of NES/SNES games and I get to play Tetris99, which I adore!
For now, I'm happy with the amount of games (more is always better, sure) and the price of the subscription.
Havng played the snes games
1. What’s the deal with the pineapples... are they victims of pizza hawaii haters.. you can pass them, but are they friends since they occassionally drop bullets?
2. Is this the tennis game that inspired super tennis champs, the brilliant commodore amiga tennis game, feels a bit like it... (see amiga power 52!, vimnie vega!).
@Krisi No, we are rightfully complaining, any emulator website can provide the whole library of NES and SNES games that you can download in seconds, Nintendo is a professional company and they are still releasing games too slow, the library is still lacking good games if you look at everything those classic consoles have to offer, and new games are still coming too slow.
I get that Nintendo has to do everything legally and many games will never come back, but that's no excuse to release new games on a dropper, at least give us 4 games every month instead of every three months.
@victordamazio any emulator site is illegal
@Krisi When a service is lauded as the best place for Nintendo legacy content by the (then) NoA President and it ends up being an afterthought to dump a couple obscure titles onto every 4 or 5 months, people are going to be disappointed in it.
Are people really that delusional to defend nintendo?
If they won't give us more good games on NSO then just hurry up and sell us the games / bring back proper virtual console.
@Krisi Well, I'd say it's pretty fair to point the finger at Nintendo, if you see what the competition offers in comparison, going up all the way to offering current gen titles to play/rent, where Nintendo seems pretty content to remain stuck in the 8 and 16 bit era.
And to think that they have SO many great games on so many systems. It's just pathetic that they aren't offering GameCube titles already, and even those are already far behind the times, compared to Microsoft's and Sony's offerings.
Worst thing about it is that on the Virtual Console, they were already offering N64 titles, and now they reverted, or rather: regressed back to older titles for the umpteenth time.
And besides all that, quite a few of us already own a NES and/or a SNES Mini, so we've got more than enough of these old games to play already. And these we actually OWN, instead of only being able to rent them.
So excited to try these games. I'm glad that they have been offering more oddball titles lately. I don't need the same 40 titles on every platform. These are games that are not in my collection and I'm happy to check them out.
I'm checking this article mainly to reconfirm my worst fears: there's still no complete N64+GC+Wii+Wii-U+GBA+DS library available, which is something I expect from the handsome price I pay for NSO. And, without having actually looked at what was released, I will point out that the titles are not the Donkey Kong Country trilogy and for this reason I also regret paying for NSO. Even though I have the DKC games in some form on original SNES, SNES Classic, various VC instances, and the GBA ports, the fact that they are not in the SNES app somehow devalues everything else. Thank you for reading my righteous complaint.
I look forward to giving these a shot today. Just hope we get Donkey Kong Country trilogy, Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, and Super Mario All Stars sometime this year.
I also hope Square puts out Illusion of Gaia/Terranigma/Soul Blazer/Actraiser 1+2/EVO Search for Eden to purchase eventually. I'd love to own those permanently and legitimately on Switch.
I'm not one to complain so this is just my 100% honest opinion- I'm really not a huge fan of how they've handled this so far. The truth is, I really don't see why they don't just bring back Virtual Console and be done with it. This drip-feed of old games just isn't something I'm real jazzed about, and for ME- the mechanics of NES games and most of the SNES games just don't do it anymore. There's no scenario in which I'm playing Super Mario Kart on SNES Online when I have the Switch version instead. All the games I DO want probably won't happen too (Axelay, ActRaiser, Illusion of Gaia, etc.) so it's just kind of "meh" to me. I keep paying for it so I can play online when I occasionally want to but let's be honest- it's not nearly as good of a value as PSN or GamePass.
I'm also not a "die-hard" retro gamer, so I'm sure this stuff is great for those folks, my tastes have just shifted to more modern mechanics so I just can't really get into this stuff. I'd rather they do something similar to GamePass where we get a few big titles and access to a bunch of indies every month or, again, throw the Virtual Console back up.
Just my opinions though, not intending to have an argument or anything. Figured I'd throw my 2 cents into the conversation.
@GhostGeneration
"There's no scenario in which I'm playing Super Mario Kart on SNES Online when I have the Switch version instead"
Yes there IS a scenario. And that is, because its the better Mario Kart. Not that simple stuff like Mario Kart 8 (I like game anyways) but Mario Kart on the SNES is the real deal and real competitive. I really enjoy this SNES Games and cleared a lot of them so far!
Final Fantasy 6 would be cool.
We need to be reminded cause the kine up is so stellar ?
N64 and Cube plox.
Would love to try Earthbound, or even a port for SNES Fire Emblem...
Eliminator Boat Duel is a great game.
Can't wait to play some vs.
Is it still only possible through friends list or did they fix that crap yet?
@Krisi I agree completely. We just keep seeing more and more examples of entitled gamers and it's pathetic. You can get a years online for 15 quid. So even if you believe online should be free and even if you believe cloud saves should be free you are still getting Tetris 99 (which is worth 15 quid by itself) and around 80 classic games including dozens of stone cold all-time classics for absolute peanuts. Imagine all these games were put out on a cart and Nintendo charged £20? People would say that was an incredible bargain. I am so sick of people moaning all the time.
And saying it's bad value because emulators exist is the same as saying a TV is not worth 300 quid because you can buy one that fell off the back of a lorry for £50 from a guy round the back of a pub.
@Moshschocker Like I said, MY opinions-not downing yours.
@victordamazio Exactly, Nintendo has to pay a fee to every publisher for every game while basically making no extra money in the process. Sure, I'd love to have more games, but I think we have plenty of classics to play already, plus I'm guessing for most people, these are just little extras they play on the side between bigger games. I'm fairly certain that most people complaining wouldn't use this service that much even if it had twice as many classics.
@Cotillion Yes, exactly this.
These new games suck but I'm not complaining. I'm on the family plan with a bunch of friends and family so I pay $4 a year for the service. Playing through the OG Fire Emblem on my Japanese account with my NES controller. It's awesome!
I want to buy 10kg of oranges and they sell me apples, then tell me that's the only way I can get 1kg of oranges. Oh, but those oranges are good, so I have no right to complain.
Sounds legit.
I can't be the only one who thinks the online service needs work. Whenever I play Pokemon Sword and am doing a trade 8 times out of ten times it says the connection was lost. As for the classic games only the Mario, Zelda, Kirby, and Metroid are the games that interest me that are on the online service. With that said, 75 percent of the games I never touched. The online service needs work.
Can't we just get some good games, and at a faster pace? I want Donkey Kong Country and Chrono Trigger so bad.
Hey, can we have the DKC trilogy, maybe some RPGs like EarthBound and Super Mario RPG?
Nintendo: ANYONE FOR TENNIS?
@Krisi my only issue is that it all seems like a step back from the Virtual Console service on Wii, Wii U and 3DS, where we had multiple releases every week, a wider range of consoles being emulated, and bought what we liked rather than renting and having to reconnect periodically.
I love that NSO actually has the Super FX chip games, I just wish I could throw a one-off fee at Nintendo to let me keep them more permanently (and legally).
@KoopaTheQuick If Microsoft get a cut of each Rare game sold on VC as they own Rare, putting Rare games on NSO would mean Microsoft would get a cut of every NSO subscription. Nintendo wouldn't want that so instead I'd imagine it's more likely the Rare games made for Nintendo come to Switch via a Switch port of Rare Replay.
I’ll try out Shadow of the Ninja. I might play the Twin Bee game too.
I look forward in 2 more days to the complaints Nintendo switch online hasn't added new games in 6 months.
Thanks for the reminder, downloading them as I type!
Never played any of these so well please with this drop. I’ve now had 75 hours each on the SNES and NES portals, so absolutely no complaints here.
@gaga64 Don't forget that you get all these games for a year for the same price you could download a single NES game for on Virtual Console (if you choose the family plan).
@Gamesurfer It's more like... You want to buy 10 kg of oranges that would normally cost 100 bucks, but you can only get 4 kg of oranges and 4 kg of apples together for 5 bucks.
It’s horrid that they replicated the bait and switch tactic of the VC where they put the brakes on it after a year or two of constant releases on a subscription service.
Looking forward to booting it up just to organize them in my collection, even if I don't have time to play them right now, haha.
@Krisi unfortunately those 4kg of oranges are of a kind I don't like, while I'd like to be able to choose them one by one.
@Krisi very true, the value for money here is fantastic (you could argue Nintendo are leaving money on the table vs the VC model, but I suppose it depends on sales numbers)
@Krisi That’s the ONE thing I’ll give Nintendo here. Since they stopped giving games monthly, they’ve been delivering on quality, starting with obscure hits like Vice and Journey to Silius.
@jobvd Which is a shame, because like it or not, emulator websites is what is keeping the videogame history preserved.
@KoopaTheQuick lol, as they did the same with Zelda because people would not buy links Awakening remake....
I get why they release games as slow as they do. Sure it would be nice if they gave us all of our favorite best games that we want all at once but then what? I'm sure there would still be a ton complaints shortly after that nothing new is happening.
For me the slower schedule has been good but I admit I am probably in the minority. I have been systematically playing through each and every game and have probably around 200 hours for both SNES and NES online together. I still have a lot of the SNES games to play through, I haven't even got through the first 20 that were released in September.
I just make sure to savour every game and even if I don't initially like the taste of the next game served I stick with it to the end and usually I appreciate the game more by the time I finish it.
As long as games keep coming I will be happy. I'm sure at some point my favourites will be added but I would rather they get sprinkled in the mix than all at once to be honest.
Hmmm... four games I never owned as a kid. I'll try each of them of course. Not super excited though.
Online subscription is worth it for Yoshi island alone x x anything else is a bonus really x x philosophy that works for me x
@victordamazio It is a shame. Nintendo puts more effort into shutting those sites down than they do with just putting out their own legacy content legitimately.
@Krisi I don't disagree with your side of this. It works for you and that's great. For (seemingly many) others, it doesn't. Yes, I get all these games for the price of outright buying one. So? I'd rather outright buy the ones I want. Or, even better, I'd rather pay a larger monthly fee for a true retro service; an actual Netflix of retro games.
Just because you (and others) are fine with the minimal effort Nintendo puts into it because they are charging next to nothing does not invalidate the many legitimate issues and complaints people have with it. We were told NSO was going to be the best place for legacy content. So far, it has yet to even match what the previous generation did, let alone be the best. Some of us want that, don't expect it for nothing and are willing to pay more for it.
At the rate they're releasing SNES titles, IF they ever release an N64 library, I expect them to put out 1 N64 game every 5 months
It’s never enough
What they should do: Make this the last NES update and focus their whole team on SNES for a regular schedule. All the big, well known NES games we have already (As I’m aware). Then, when N64/whatever-they-have-planned-next comes out, update SNES for a few more months and eventually discontinue game additions for it, focusing solely on N64 until their next VC release...
Actually REALLY GOOD GAMES but people are whining because they're not recognizable names.
Wizards and Warriors please Nintendo!
@SteveDaSteve Well, we don't have any of the 4 Castlevania games, any of the 6 Mega Man games, any of the 2 Contra games, Ninja Gaiden 2 or 3, no Earthbound Beginnings (Mother) or Nazo no Murasamejou, or Yoshi's Cookie, no Goemon games, no StarTropics II or Adventures of Lolo 2 or 3, no Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior) games, no Faxanadu, no Mach Rider, Pac-Man, or Galaga, not even Xevious, Lode Runner, or Bionic Commando... And the list goes on, and I didn't even mention licensed games like Batman or Duck Tales. These are all very famous, popular NES games that haven't appeared yet. I think they are far from finished.
You won't see Castlevania or Mega Man because they are on their own retro collections now. Similar to the fragmenting of streaming video services, other companies want to get in on rereleasing their old games instead of just letting Nintendo put it in their service. The same could very easily be true of any third party games especially those from Square Enix.
@theberrage
My mother loved that game back in the day. Alas, she has moved on to Candy Crush.
I just want the option to buy Super Metroid. I’d probably have spent more $ in a year buying the games than the subscriptions dues if these were for sale but I just am not fond of any kind of subscription service.
Smash Tennis is VERY good. Might seem an odd favourite but it's the first game added to the SNES app on Switch that I really want to play.
If only these complainers lives in the 8-Bit/16-Bit era then they will know that getting games this easily is unheard of in that time period. Sure they're not the games you expected but they are still interesting titles and could be fun if only you give it a chance. I live through the NES and SNES era and games like Pop'n TwinBees and Shadow of the Ninja are ones I probably would had never ever get to play unless I search very far and deep for them. To have those readily available in this time and age and officially is a great opportunity to try them out.
@Ooccoo_Jr Yep people are making out like they’re getting robbed at knifepoint and Miyamoto has taken a dump in their living room. I calculated it to be 4.9p a day. 4.9p a day to play some of the greatest games ever made. And yet they cry in these comment sections like we or this website can change anything. Besides which, maybe VC was a flop on the WiiU and 3DS, hence why they canned it...
@WiltonRoots the pokemon games sold over 1.5 million in two months on the 3ds.
Edit: for what is essentially a ROM dump's worth of work.
@Coalescence I know that, but it's still not true that all classic games are on the NES app.
Plus Crystalis, for example, is on both the NES online app and the SNK 40th Anniversary bundle.
@Krisi Fair enough. That is a lot of games, after all.
This is a great line up of new games, and nice to be able to sample some off the beaten track classics.
Just watch out for Darren’s serve on Smash Tennis!
my daughter and I have become quick fans of the Pop'n TwinBee game, it is a lot of fun when you play with another person. game has a few short comings but over all we love it.
